tasyāpyaṃto na dṛṣṭo me hyavalokanatatparaḥ.. 6.48 ..
having just arrived from Pātāla, quickly spoke to all of them: / “Though intent upon searching, its end was not seen by me either.

atalaṃ sutalaṃ cāpi nitalaṃ ca rasātalam.. 6.49 ..
Great wonder arose in me as I wandered beyond Pātāla: / Atala, Sutala, and also Nitala, Rasātala,
1.3.4.50
tathā gatastalaṃ caiva pātālaṃ ca tathātalam..
talātalāni tānyenaṃ śūnyavadyadvibhāvyate.. 6.50 ..
and likewise I went to Tala, and Pātāla, and so to Atala; / those various netherworlds appear to be like a void.
1.3.4.51
śūnyādapi ca śūnyaṃ ca tatsarvaṃ sunirīkṣitam..
na mūlaṃ ca na madhyaṃ ca na cāṃto hyasya vidyate.. 6.51 ..
All that was thoroughly inspected by me, emptier even than an empty void: / no base, no middle, and no end exists for it.
1.3.4.52
liṃgarūpī mahādevo yenedaṃ dhāryate jagat..
yasya prasādādutpannā yūyaṃ ca ṛṣayastathā.. 6.52 ..
This is Mahādeva in the form of a liṅga, by whom this universe is upheld, / and by whose grace you and the seers were brought forth.”

tadā viṣṇuruvācedaṃ brahmāṇaṃ prahasanniva.. 6.53 ..
Hearing this, the gods and the seers honored his words. / Then Viṣṇu said this to Brahmā, as if laughing:
1.3.4.54
dṛṣṭaṃ hi cettvayā brahmanmastakaṃ paramārthataḥ..
sākṣiṇaḥ ke tvayā tatra asminnarthe prakalpitāḥ.. 6.54 ..
“If indeed the head was truly seen by you, O Brahmā, / what witnesses have you prepared for this matter?”
1.3.4.55
ākarṇya vacanaṃ viṣṇorbrahmā lokapitāmahaḥ..
uvāca tvaritenaiva ketakī surabhīti ca.. 6.55 ..
Hearing Viṣṇu's words, Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, / quickly said: “Ketakī and Surabhi.
1.3.4.56
te devā mama sākṣitve jānīhi paramārthataḥ..
brahmaṇo hi vacaḥ śrutvā sarve devāstvarānvitāḥ.. 6.56 ..
Know them, O gods, as my witnesses in truth.” / Hearing Brahmā's words, all the gods in haste
1.3.4.57
āhvānaṃ cakrire tasyāḥ surabhyāśca tayā saha..
āgate tatkṣamādeva kāryārthaṃ brahmaṇastadā.. 6.57 ..
summoned her, Surabhi, along with that [ketakī]. / Then, at that very moment, both arrived for the purpose of Brahmā.
1.3.4.58
iṃdrādyaiśca tadā devairuktā ca surabhī tataḥ..
uvāca ketakīsārddhaṃ dṛṣṭo vai brahmaṇā surāḥ.. 6.58 ..
Addressed then by the gods headed by Indra, Surabhi thereupon / spoke together with the ketakī: “Indeed, O gods, it was seen by Brahmā!
1.3.4.59
liṃgasya mastako devāḥ ketakīdalapūjitaḥ..
tadā nabhogatā vāṇī sarveṣāṃ śrṛṇvatāmabhūt.. 6.59 ..
The head of the liṅga, O gods, was worshipped with ketakī petals.” / Then a voice from the sky arose while everyone listened:
1.3.4.60
surabhyā caiva yatproktaṃ ketakyā ca tathā surāḥ..
tanmṛṣoktaṃ ca jānīdhvaṃ na dṛṣṭo hyasya mastakaḥ.. 6.60 ..
“Whatever has been spoken by Surabhi and likewise by the ketakī, O gods, / know that to be spoken falsely; its head has not been seen.”
1.3.4.61
tadā sarve'tha vibudhāḥ seṃdrā vai viṣṇunā saha..
śepuśca surabhīṃ roṣānmṛṣāvādanatatparām.. 6.61 ..
Then all the gods, along with Indra and Viṣṇu, / cursed Surabhi in anger, because she had engaged in lying speech:
1.3.4.62
mukhenoktaṃ tvayādyaivamanṛtaṃ ca tathā śubhe..
apavitraṃ mukhaṃ te'stu sarvadharmabahiṣkṛtam.. 6.62 ..
“Since an untruth was spoken by your mouth today, O auspicious one, / let your mouth be unholy, excluded from all religious duties!
1.3.4.63
sugaṃdhaketakī cāpi ayogyā tvaṃ śivārcane..
bhaviṣyasi na saṃdeho anṛtā caiva bhāmini.. 6.63 ..
And you, fragrant ketakī, will also be unfit for the worship of Śiva; / there is no doubt of this, because you lied, O splendid lady!”
1.3.4.64
tadā nabho gatā vāṇī brahmaṇaṃ ca śaśāpa vai..
mṛṣoktaṃ ca tvayā maṃda kimarthaṃ bāliśena hi.. 6.64 ..
Then the voice from the sky cursed Brahmā indeed: / “Falsehood was spoken by you, O dull-witted one! Why [did you do so], like a child?
1.3.4.65
bhṛguṇā ṛṣibhiḥ sākaṃ tathaiva ca purodhasā..
tasmādyuyaṃ na pūjyāśca bhaveyuḥ kleśabhāginaḥ.. 6.65 ..
Together with Bhṛgu, the seers, and likewise the family priest, / therefore you all shall not be worshipped, and shall be sharers in misery!
1.3.4.66
ṛṣayo'pi ca dharmiṣṭhāstattvavākyabahiṣkṛtāḥ..
vivādaniratā mūḍhā atattvajñāḥ samatsarāḥ.. 6.66 ..
Even the seers, though very righteous, shall be excluded from statements of truth, / devoted to disputation, deluded, ignorant of truth, and full of envy,
1.3.4.67
yācakāścāvadānyāśca nityaṃ svajñānaghātakāḥ..
ātmasaṃbhāvitāḥ stabdhāḥ parasparaviniṃdakāḥ.. 6.67 ..
beggars, ungenerous, constantly destroying their own knowledge, / self-conceited, obstinate, and revilers of one another!”
1.3.4.68
evaṃ śaptāśca munayo brahmādyā devatāstathā..
śivena śaptāste sarve liṃgaṃ śaraṇamāyayuḥ.. 6.68 ..
Having been thus cursed, the sages and the deities headed by Brahmā, / cursed by Śiva, all went to the liṅga for refuge.
