yācitaṃ ca mayā śaṃbhorvadanaṃ vānarasya ca..
śivena kṛpayā dattaṃ mama kāruṇyaśālinā.. 8.78 ..
And the face of a monkey was requested by me from Śambhu;
out of grace it was given to me by Śiva, who is full of compassion.
1.3.6.79
nirābhimānino ye ca nirdabhā niṣparigrahāḥ..
śaṃbhoḥ priyāste vijñeyā hyanye śivavabahiṣkṛtāḥ.. 8.79 ..
Those who are devoid of pride, devoid of hypocrisy, and free from possessions,
they should be known as dear to Śambhu; others are cast out from Śiva.'
1.3.6.80
tathāvadanmayā sārddhaṃ rāvaṇastapaso balāt..
mayā ca yācitānyeva daśa vaktrāṇi dhīmatā.. 8.80 ..
So spoke Rāvaṇa with me through the power of his tapas:
'And ten faces were requested by me, the wise one!'
1.3.6.81
upahāsakaraṃ vākyaṃ paulastyasya tadā surāḥ..
mayā tadā hi śapto'sau rāvaṇo lokarāvaṇaḥ.. 8.81 ..
Hearing that mocking speech of the son of Pulastya, O gods,
then indeed that Rāvaṇa, who makes the worlds weep, was cursed by me:
1.3.6.82
īdṛśānyeva vaktrāṇi yeṣāṃ vai saṃbhavaṃti hi..
taiḥ sameto yadā ko'pi naravaryo mahātapāḥ..
māṃ puraskṛtya sahasā haniṣyati na saṃśayaḥ.. 8.82 ..
'When a certain foremost of men of great tapas,
united with those who indeed have faces just like this,
advances with me at the front, he will kill [you] swiftly—there is no doubt!'
1.3.6.83
evaṃ śapto mayā brahmanrāvaṇo lokarāvaṇaḥ..
arcitaṃ kevalaṃ liṃgaṃ vinā tena mahātmanā.. 8.83 ..
Thus, O brahmin, was Rāvaṇa, who makes the worlds weep, cursed by me.
Only the bare liṅga without [the pedestal] was worshipped by that great-souled one;
1.3.6.84
pīṭhikārūpasaṃsthena vinā tena surottamāḥ..
viṣṇunā hi mahābhāgāstasmātsarvaṃ vidhāsyati.. 8.84 ..
without that [pedestal] which stands in the form of the pedestal, O best of gods,
for it is Viṣṇu, O fortunate ones; therefore he will accomplish everything.
1.3.6.85
devadevo mahādevo viṣṇurūpī maheśvaraḥ..
sarve yūyaṃ prārthayaṃtu viṣṇuṃ sarvaguhāśayam.. 8.85 ..
Maheśvara, the god of gods, Mahādeva, has the form of Viṣṇu.
All of you should pray to Viṣṇu, who dwells in the cave of every [heart].
1.3.6.86
ahaṃ hi sarvadevānāṃ purovartī bhavāmyataḥ..
te sarve naṃdino vākyaṃ śrutvā muditamānasāḥ..
vaikuṃṭhamāgatā gīrbhirviṣṇuṃ stotuṃ pracakrire.. 8.86 ..
For I shall march at the head of all the gods.'
Hearing the words of Nandin, all of them, their minds gladdened,
went to Vaikuṇṭha and began to praise Viṣṇu with hymns:
1.3.6.87
.. devā ūcuḥ..
namo bhagavate tubhyaṃ devadeva jagatpate..
tvadādhāramidaṃ sarvaṃ jagadetaccarācaram.. 8.87 ..
The gods said:
'Homage to you, the Blessed One, O god of gods, lord of the world!
Supported by you is this entire world, both moving and unmoving.
1.3.6.88
etalliṃgaṃ tvayā viṣṇo dhṛtaṃ vai piṇḍirūpiṇā..
mahāviṣṇusvarūpeṇa ghātitau madhukaiṭabhau.. 8.88 ..
This liṅga was borne by you, O Viṣṇu, in the form of the pedestal.
In the form of Mahāviṣṇu, Madhu and Kaiṭabha were slain [by you].
1.3.6.89
tathā kamaṭharūpeṇa dhṛto vai maṃdarācalaḥ..
varāharūpamāsthāya hiraṇyākṣo hatastvayā.. 8.89 ..
Likewise, in the form of a tortoise, Mount Mandara was supported.
Assuming the form of a boar, Hiraṇyākṣa was slain by you.
1.3.6.90
hiraṇyakaśipurdaityo hato nṛharirūpiṇā..
tvayā caiva balirbaddho daityo vāmanarūpiṇā.. 8.90 ..
The Daitya Hiraṇyakaśipu was slain in the form of the man-lion,
and the Daitya Bali was bound by you in the form of the dwarf.
1.3.6.91
bhṛgūṇāmanvaye bhūtvā kṛtavīryātmajo hataḥ..
itopyasmānmahāviṣṇo tathaiva paripālaya.. 8.91 ..
Born in the lineage of the Bhṛgus, the son of Kṛtavīrya was slain.
Now also protect us likewise from this, O Mahāviṣṇu!
1.3.6.92
rāvamasya bhayādasmāttrātuṃ bhūyorhasi tvaram.. 8.92 ..
You ought to swiftly save [us] again from this fear of Rāvaṇa!'
1.3.6.93
evaṃ saṃprārthito devairbhagavānbhūtabhāvanaḥ..
uvāca ca surānsarvānvāsudevo jaganmayaḥ.. 8.93 ..
Thus implored by the gods, the Blessed One, the creator of beings,
Vāsudeva, who comprises the universe, spoke to all the gods:
1.3.6.94
he devāḥ śrūyatāṃ vākyaṃ prastāvasadṛśaṃ mahat..
śailādiṃ ca puraskṛtya sarve yūyaṃ tvarānvitāḥ..
avatārānprakurvantu vānarīṃ tanumāśritāḥ.. 8.94 ..
'O gods, hear [my] great speech, suited to this occasion:
Placing the son of Śilāda at the front, all of you, endowed with haste,
should make descents, resorting to monkey bodies.
1.3.6.95
ahaṃ hi mānuṣo bhūtvā hyajñānena samāvṛtaḥ..
saṃbhaviṣyāmyayodhyāyaṃ gṛhe daśarathasya ca..
brahmavidyāsahāyosmi bhavatāṃ kāryasiddhaye.. 8.95 ..
Having become a mortal, covered by ignorance,
I shall be born in Ayodhyā, in the house of Daśaratha.
I have Brahmavidyā as my companion for the accomplishment of your purpose.
1.3.6.96
janakasya gṛhe sākṣādbrahmavidyā janiṣyati..
bhakto hi rāvaṇaḥ sākṣācchivadhyānaparāyaṇaḥ.. 8.96 ..
Directly in the house of Janaka, Brahmavidyā will be born.
Rāvaṇa is indeed a devotee, wholly intent on meditating upon Śiva.
1.3.6.97
tapasā mahatā yukto brahmavidyāṃ yadecchati..
tadā susādhyo bhavati puruṣo dharmanirjitaḥ.. 8.97 ..
Endowed with great tapas, when he desires Brahmavidyā,
then that man, overcome by righteousness, becomes easily subdued.'
1.3.6.98
evaṃ saṃbhāṣya bhagavānviṣṇuḥ paramamaṅgalaḥ..
vālī cendrāṃśasaṃbhūtaḥ sugrīvoṃ śumataḥ sutaḥ.. 8.98 ..
Having spoken thus, the Blessed One, Viṣṇu, supremely auspicious—
Vālin was born from a portion of Indra; Sugrīva was the son of the Sun.
1.3.6.99
tathā brahmāṃśasaṃbhūto jāmbavānnṛkṣakuñjaraḥ..
śilādatanayo naṃdī śivasyānucaraḥ priyaḥ.. 8.99 ..
Likewise, Jāmbavat, the best of bears, was born from a portion of Brahmā.
Nandin, the son of Śilāda, is the beloved attendant of Śiva;
1.3.6.100
yo vai caikādaśo rudro hanūmānsa mahākapiḥ..
avatīrṇaḥ sahāyārthaṃ viṣṇoramitatejasaḥ.. 8.100 ..
and the great monkey Hanūmat is indeed the eleventh Rudra,
who descended to assist Viṣṇu of boundless splendor.
1.3.6.101
maiṃdādayo'tha kapayaste sarve surasattamāḥ..
evaṃ sarve suragaṇā avateruryathā tatham.. 8.101 ..
Mainda and other monkeys were all the foremost of the gods.
Thus all the hosts of gods descended in their respective forms.
1.3.6.102
tathaiva viṣṇurutpannaḥ kauśalyānaṃdavarddhanaḥ..
viśvasya ramaṇāccaiva rāma ityucyate budhaiḥ.. 8.102 ..
Likewise Viṣṇu was born, increasing the joy of Kauśalyā;
and because he brings delight to the universe, he is called Rāma by the wise.
1.3.6.103
śeṣopi bhaktyā viṣṇośca tapasā'vātaradbhuvi.. 8.103 ..
Śeṣa also descended to earth through devotion to Viṣṇu and through tapas.
1.3.6.104
dordaṇḍāvapi viṣṇośca avatīrṇau pratāpinau..
śatrughnabharatākhyau ca vikhyātau bhuvanatraye.. 8.104 ..
The two mighty arms of Viṣṇu also descended,
named Śatrughna and Bharata, renowned throughout the three worlds.
1.3.6.105
mithilādhipateḥ kanyā yā uktā brahmavādibhiḥ..
sā brahmavidyāvataratsurāṇāṃ kāryyasiddhaye..
sītā jātā lāṃgalasya iyaṃ bhūmivikarṣaṇāt.. 8.105 ..
The daughter of the ruler of Mithilā, who is spoken of by the knowers of Brahman,
she, Brahmavidyā, descended for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose.
She was born as Sītā from the furrows made by a plow dragging the earth.
1.3.6.106
tasmātsīteti vikhyātā vidyā sānvīkṣikī tadā..
mithilāyāṃ samutpannā maithitītyabhidhīyate.. 8.106 ..
Therefore, renowned as Sītā, she was then the science of inquiry;
born in Mithilā, she is called Maithilī.
1.3.6.107
janakasya kule jātā viśrutā janakātmajā..
khyātā vedavatī pūrvaṃ brahmavidyāghanāśinī.. 8.107 ..
Born in the family of Janaka, celebrated as the daughter of Janaka,
formerly known as Vedavatī, Brahmavidyā that destroys sins.
1.3.6.108
sā dattā janakenaiva viṣṇave paramātmane.. 8.108 ..
She was given by Janaka himself to Viṣṇu, the Supreme Self.
1.3.6.109
tayātha vidyayā sārddhaṃ devadevo jagatpatiḥ..
ugre tapasi līno'sau viṣṇuḥ paramaduṣkaram.. 8.109 ..
Together with that Vidyā, the god of gods, the lord of the world,
that Viṣṇu, engaged in fierce and exceedingly difficult tapas.
1.3.6.110
rāvaṇaṃ jetukāmo vai rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ..
araṇyavāsamakaroddevānāṃ kāryasiddhaye.. 8.110 ..
Desiring to conquer Rāvaṇa, the lotus-eyed Rāma
dwelt in the forest for the accomplishment of the purpose of the gods.
1.3.6.111
śeṣāvatāro'pi mahāṃstapaḥ paramaduṣkaram..
tatāpa parayā śaktyā devānāṃ kāryasiddhaye.. 8.111 ..
The great incarnation of Śeṣa also, for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose,
performed exceedingly difficult tapas with supreme power.
1.3.6.112
śatrughno bharataścaiva tepatuḥ paramaṃ tapaḥ.. 8.112 ..
Śatrughna and Bharata also performed supreme tapas.
1.3.6.113
tato'sau tapasā yuktaḥ sārddhaṃ tairdevatāgaṇaiḥ..
sagaṇaṃ rāvaṇaṃ rāmaḥ ṣaḍbhirmāsairajīhanat..
viṣṇunā ghātitaḥ śastraiḥ śivasārūpyamāptavān.. 8.113 ..
Then, endowed with tapas, together with those hosts of deities,
Rāma killed Rāvaṇa along with his host within six months.
Slain by Viṣṇu with weapons, he attained conformity of form with Śiva.
1.3.6.114
sagamaḥ sa punaḥ sadyo baṃdhubhiḥ saha suvratāḥ.. 8.114 ..
He departed at once together with his kinsmen, O you of noble vows!
1.3.6.115
śivaprasādātsakalaṃ dvaitādvaitamavāpa ha..
dvaitādvaitavivekārthamṛpayopyatra mohitāḥ..
tatsarvaṃ prāpnuvaṃtīha śivārcanaratā narāḥ.. 8.115 ..
By the grace of Śiva, he attained all duality and non-duality. / Even seers are bewildered concerning the discernment between duality and non-duality; / men devoted to the worship of Śiva attain all that here.
1.3.6.116
ye'rcayaṃti śivaṃ nityaṃ liṃgarūpiṇameva ca..
striyo vāpyatha vā śūdrāḥ śvapacā hyaṃtyavāsinaḥ..
taṃ śivaṃ prāpnuvaṃtyeva sarvaduḥkhopanāśanam.. 8.116 ..
Those who constantly worship Śiva specifically in the form of a liṅga, / whether women, Śūdras, or outcastes dwelling on the fringes, / attain that very Śiva who destroys all suffering.
1.3.6.117
paśavo'pi paraṃ yātāḥ kiṃ punarmānuṣādayaḥ.. 8.117 ..
Even beasts have attained the supreme, what then of human beings and others?
1.3.6.118
ye dvijā brahmacaryeṇa tapaḥ paramamāsthitāḥ..
varṣairanekairyajñānāṃ te'pi svargaparā bhavan.. 8.118 ..
Those twice-born who, through celibacy, engaged in supreme austerity, / even they, through sacrifices over many years, became intent on heaven.
1.3.6.119
jyotiṣṭomo vājapeyo hyatirātrādayo hyamī..
yajñāḥ svargaṃ prayacchaṃti sattrīṇāṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ.. 8.119 ..
The Jyotiṣṭoma, Vājapeya, and Atirātra sacrifices— / these rituals bestow heaven upon the sacrificers; of this there is no doubt.
1.3.6.120
tatra svargasukhaṃ bhuktvā puṇyakṣayakaraṃ mahat..
puṇyakṣaye'pi yajvāno martyalokaṃ pataṃti vai.. 8.120 ..
Having enjoyed the great bliss of heaven there, which causes the exhaustion of merit, / upon the exhaustion of their merit, the sacrificers indeed fall back to the mortal world.
1.3.6.121
patitānāṃ ca saṃsāre daivādbuddhiḥ prajāyate..
guṇatrayamayī viprāstāsutāstviha yoniṣu.. 8.121 ..
And when they have fallen into the cycle of worldly existence, an intellect arises by fate / composed of the three qualities, O brahmins, in those diverse wombs here.
1.3.6.122
yathā sattvaṃ saṃbhavati sattvayuktabhavaṃ narāḥ..
rājasāśca tathā jñeyāstā masāścaiva te dvijāḥ.. 8.122 ..
According as goodness arises, men are born endowed with goodness; / those characterized by passion and those characterized by darkness are to be known likewise, O twice-born.
1.3.6.123
evaṃ saṃsāracakre'sminbhramitā bahavo janāḥ..
yadṛcchayā daivagatyā śivaṃ saṃsevate naraḥ.. 8.123 ..
Thus, many people wander in this wheel of worldly existence; / by chance, through the course of fate, a man serves Śiva.
1.3.6.124
śivadhyānaparāṇāṃ ca narāṇāṃ yatacetasām..
māyānirasanaṃ sadyo bhaviṣyati na cānyathā.. 8.124 ..
And for men intent on meditating upon Śiva, whose minds are restrained, / the dispelling of illusion will occur immediately; it cannot be otherwise.
1.3.6.125
māyānirasanātsadyo naśyatyeva guṇatrayam..
yadā guṇatrayātīto bhavatīti sa muktibhāk.. 8.125 ..
From the dispelling of illusion, the three qualities are destroyed at once; / when one transcends the three qualities, he becomes a possessor of liberation.
1.3.6.126
tasmālliṅgārcanaṃ bhāvyaṃ sarveṣāmapi dehinām..
liṅgarūpī śivo bhūtvā trāyate saṃcarācaram.. 8.126 ..
Therefore, worship of the liṅga should be performed by all embodied beings; / having assumed the form of a liṅga, Śiva protects the moving and the unmoving.
1.3.6.127
purā bhavadbhiḥ pṛṣṭo'haṃ liṅgarūpī kathaṃ śivaḥ..
tatsarvaṃ kathitaṃ viprā yāthātathyena saṃprati.. 8.127 ..
Formerly you asked me how Śiva came to have the form of a liṅga; / all that has now been related faithfully, O brahmins.
1.3.6.128
kathaṃ garaṃ bhakṣitavāñchivo lokamaheśvaraḥ..
tatsarvaṃ śrūyatāṃ viprā yatāvatkathayāmi vaḥ.. 8.128 ..
How Śiva, the Great Lord of the world, consumed the poison— / hear all that, O brahmins; I will relate it to you as it truly happened.
1.3.6.128_1
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhāsryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe kedārakhaṃḍe śivaśāstre śivaliṅgārcanamāhātmyakathane śrīrāmāvatārakathāvarṇanaṃnāmāṣṭamo'dhyāyaḥ.. 8 .. cha ..
Thus ends the eighth chapter, entitled 'The Description of the Story of the Incarnation of Śrī Rāma' in the recounting of the greatness of worshipping the Śivaliṅga, in the Śiva treatise of the Kedārakhaṇḍa, in the first section, the Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, of the venerable Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
