And how did he attain perfection through the grace of Siddhamātṛ?

etadācakṣva tattvena śrotuṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ ..4..
Relate this in truth, for we indeed have curiosity to hear it.

sādhu pṛṣṭamidaṃ viprā dūrāṃtaritamapyuta .. 5 ..
Well asked is this, O brahmins, though distant in time and topic;
1.4.57.13
śrutā dvaipāyanamukhātkathāṃ vakṣyāmi cātra vaḥ ..
I shall relate to you the story heard from the mouth of Dvaipāyana [Vyāsa].
1.4.57.14
purā drupadarājasya putrīmāsādya pāṃḍavāḥ .. 6 ..
Anciently, having obtained the daughter of King Drupada,
1.4.57.15
dhṛtarāṣṭramate paścādiṃdraprasthaṃ nyaveśayan ..
the Pāṇḍavas later, by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's decision, settled Indraprastha.
1.4.57.16
rakṣitā vāsudevena kadācittatra pāṃḍavāḥ ..7..
Protected by Vāsudeva, once there the Pāṇḍavas,
1.4.57.17
upaviṣṭāḥ sabhāmadhye kathāścakruḥ pṛthagvidhāḥ ..
seated in the assembly hall, engaged in various conversations.
1.4.57.18
devarṣipitṛbhūtānāṃ rājñāṃ cāpi prakīrtane .. 8 ..
While the recounting of celestial seers, ancestors, spirits,
1.4.57.19
kriyamāṇe'tha tatrāgādbhīmaputro ghaṭotkacaḥ ..
and kings was being performed, Bhīma's son Ghaṭotkaca arrived there.
1.4.57.20
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaraḥ paṃca vāsudevaśca vīryavān .. 9 ..
Seeing him, the five brothers and the valiant Vāsudeva,
1.4.57.21
utthāya sahasā pīṭhādāliliṃgurmudā yutāḥ ..
rising quickly from their seats, embraced him with joy.
1.4.57.22
sa ca tānpraṇataḥ prahvo vavaṃde bhīmanaṃdanaḥ .. 1.2.59.10 ..
And bowing low, humbled, Bhīma's son paid homage to them.
1.4.57.23
sāśiṣaṃ ca tato rājñā svotsaṃga upaveśitaḥ ..
And then, with blessings, he was seated upon his lap by the king;
1.4.57.24
āghrāya snehato mūrdhni proktaśca janasaṃsadi .. 11 ..
having affectionately smelled his head, he was addressed in the midst of the assembly:
1.4.57.25
.. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca .. ..
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
1.4.57.26
kuta āgamyate putra kva cāyaṃ vihṛtastvayā ..
"Whence have you come, my son? And where have you spent this
1.4.57.27
kālaḥ kvacitsukhaṃ rājyaṃ kuruṣe mātulaṃ tava .. 12 ..
time? Are you happily ruling the kingdom of your maternal uncle?
1.4.57.28
kaściddeveṣu vipreṣu goṣu sādhuṣu sarvadā ..
Do you not cause any harm toward gods, brahmins,
1.4.57.29
haiḍaṃbe nāpakuruṣe priyametaddhareśca naḥ .. 13 ..
cows, and virtuous people, O son of Hiḍimbā? This is pleasing to Hari and to us.
1.4.57.30
heḍaṃbasya vanaṃ sarvaṃ tasya ye sainyarākṣasāḥ ..
Are all the forest of Hiḍimba and the rākṣasa soldiers belonging to it
1.4.57.31
pālyamānāstvayā sādho vardhaṃte janakṣemakāḥ .. 14 ..
thriving, protected by you, O virtuous one, ensuring the welfare of the people?
1.4.57.32
kaccinnaṃdati te mātā bhṛśaṃ naḥ priyakāriṇī ..
Does your mother rejoice, she who constantly brings us delight?
1.4.57.33
kanyaiva yā purā bhīmaṃ tyaktvā mānaṃ patiṃ śritā .. 15 ..
Even as a maiden long ago, casting off pride, she took refuge in Bhīma as her husband."
1.4.57.34
iti pṛṣṭo dharmarājñā smayanhaiḍaṃbirabravīt ..
Thus questioned by Dharmarāja, the son of Hiḍimbā smiled and said:
1.4.57.35
hate tasmindurācāre mātule'smi niyojitaḥ .. 16 ..
"When that vile maternal uncle was slain, I was appointed [to rule].
1.4.57.36
tadrājyaṃ śāsane sthāpya duṣṭānnighnaṃścarāmyaham ..
Having established that kingdom under law and slaying the wicked, I wander about.
1.4.57.37
mātā kuśalinī devī tapo divyamupāśritā .. 17 ..
My mother the queen is well, devoted to divine austerity.
1.4.57.38
māmuvāca sadā putra pitṝṇāṃ bhaktikṛdbhava ..
She always told me: 'Son, be devoted to your fathers.'
1.4.57.39
so'haṃ māturvacaḥ śrutvā merupādātsamāgataḥ .. 18 ..
Having heard my mother's words, I have come from the foot of Mount Meru
1.4.57.40
praṇāmāyaiva bhavatāṃ bhaktiprahveṇa cetasā ..
solely to bow before you, my mind bowed low with devotion.
1.4.57.41
ātmānaṃ ca mahatyarthe kasmiṃścittu niyojitam ..
And I desire myself to be engaged in some great purpose
1.4.57.42
bhavadbhirahamicchāmi phalaṃ yasmādidaṃ mahat .. 19 ..
by you, since this bears great fruit.
1.4.57.43
yadājñāpālanaṃ putraḥ pitṝṇāṃ sarvadā caret ..
Whatever obedience to commands a son constantly performs for his fathers,
1.4.57.44
athorddhvalokānsa jayediha jāyeta kīrtimān .. 1.2.59.20 ..
thereby he conquers the higher worlds and becomes renowned here on earth."
1.4.57.45
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
1.4.57.46
ityuktavaṃtaṃ taṃ rājā parirabhya punaḥpunaḥ ..
Embracing again and again the one who had spoken thus,
1.4.57.47
uvāca dharmarāṭ putramānaṃdāśruḥ sagadgadam .. 21 ..
Dharmarāja, with tears of joy, stammering with emotion, spoke to his son:
1.4.57.48
tvameva no bhaktikārī sahāyaścāpi vartase .. 22 ..
"You alone are one who offers devotion to us and also serves as our helper.
1.4.57.49
etadarthaṃ ca haiḍaṃbe putrānicchaṃti sādhavaḥ ..
For this purpose, O son of Hiḍimbā, virtuous men desire sons;
1.4.57.50
ihāmutra tārayaṃte tādṛśāścāpi putrakāḥ .. 23 ..
such sons deliver [their fathers] both here and in the hereafter.
1.4.57.51
avaśyaṃ yādṛśī mātā tādṛśastanayo bhavet ..
Inevitably, as the mother is, so the son becomes.
1.4.57.52
mātā ca te bhaktimatī dṛḍhaṃ nastvaṃ ca tādṛśaḥ .. 24 ..
Your mother is deeply devoted to us, and you are just like her.
1.4.57.53
aho suduṣkaraṃ devī kurute me priyā vadhūḥ ..
Ah, what an arduous deed the noble lady, my beloved daughter-in-law, performs,
1.4.57.54
yā bhartṛśriyamullaṃghya tapa eva samāśritā .. 25 ..
who, setting aside the fortune of a husband, has resorted solely to austerity!
1.4.57.55
nūnaṃ kāmena bhogairvā kṛtyaṃ vadhvā na me manāk ..
Surely my daughter-in-law has no concern whatsoever for desire or pleasures,
1.4.57.56
yā putrasukhamanvīkṣya paralokārthamāśritā .. 26 ..
who, having seen her son's well-being, has devoted herself to the sake of the next world.
1.4.57.57
duṣkulīnāpi yā bhaktā sūte'patyaṃ ca bhaktimat ..
Even if of low birth, a woman who is devoted and gives birth to devoted offspring,
1.4.57.58
kulīnameva tanmanye mamedaṃ matamuttamam ..27..
her alone I consider noble of birth; this is my supreme conviction."
1.4.57.59
evaṃ bahūni vākyāni tāni tāni vadannṛpaḥ ..
Speaking thus many various words, the king,
1.4.57.60
dharmarājaḥ samābhāṣya keśavaṃ vākyamabravīt .. 28 ..
Dharmarāja, addressed Keśava and spoke these words:
1.4.57.61
puṃḍarīkākṣa jānāsi yathā bhīmādabhūdayam ..
"O lotus-eyed one, you know how he was born from Bhīma,
1.4.57.62
jātamātrastu yaścāsīdyauvanastho mahābalaḥ .. 29 ..
and how the moment he was born he was established in youth, possessed of great strength.
1.4.57.63
aṣṭānāṃ devayonīnāṃ yato janma ca yauvanam ..
Because for the eight classes of divine beings, birth and youth
1.4.57.64
sadya eva bhavettasmātsadyo'syāsīcca yauvanam .. .. 1.2.59.30 ..
occur instantly, therefore his youth occurred instantly.
1.4.57.65
tadasyocitadārārthe sadā ciṃtāsti kṛṣṇa me ..
Therefore, O Kṛṣṇa, I constantly have anxiety regarding a suitable wife for him:
1.4.57.66
ucitaṃ bata haiḍaṃbeḥ kva kalatraṃ karomyaham .. 31 ..
'Alas, where shall I find a suitable wife for the son of Hiḍimbā?'
1.4.57.67
tadbhavānkṛṣṇasarvajña trilokīmapi vetsi ca ..
Therefore, O all-knowing Kṛṣṇa, you know even the three worlds;
1.4.57.68
haiḍaṃberucitā dārānvaktumarhasi yādava .. 32 ..
you ought to declare a wife suitable for the son of Hiḍimbā, O Yādava."
1.4.57.69
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
1.4.57.70
evamukto dharmarājñā kṣaṇaṃ dhyātvā janārdanaḥ ..
Thus addressed by Dharmarāja, Janārdana, having meditated for a moment,
1.4.57.71
dharmarājamidaṃ vākyaṃ padāṃtaritamabravīt .. 33 ..
spoke to Dharmarāja these words with measured pauses:
1.4.57.72
asti rājanpravakṣyāmi dārānasyocitāṃ śubhām ..
"There is, O King, as I shall declare, an auspicious wife suitable for him;
1.4.57.73
sāṃprataṃ saṃsthitā ramye prāgjyotiṣapure vare .. 34 ..
presently she resides in the delightful and excellent city of Prāgjyotiṣa.
1.4.57.74
sā ca putrī muroḥ pārtha daityasyādbhutakarmaṇaḥ ..
She is the daughter of Mura, O Pārtha, the daitya of wondrous deeds,
1.4.57.75
yo'sau narakadaityasya prāṇatulyaḥ sakhā'bhavat .. 35 ..
who was the companion as dear as life itself to the daitya Naraka.
1.4.57.76
sa ca me nihato ghoraḥ pāśadurgasamanvitaḥ ..
That formidable [daitya], encircled by a fortress of nooses, was slain by me,
1.4.57.77
narakaśca durācārastvametadvetsi sarvaśaḥ .. 36 ..
as was the wicked Naraka; you know this entirely.
1.4.57.78
tato hate murau daitye mayā tasya sutāvrajat ..
Then, when the daitya Mura was slain by me, his daughter came forth
1.4.57.79
yoddhuṃ māmativīryatvādghorā kāmakaṭaṃkaṭā .. 37 ..
to fight against me because of her immense valor—the terrifying Kāmakaṭaṅkaṭā.
1.4.57.80
tāṃ tato'haṃ mahāyuddhe khaḍgakheṭakadhāriṇīm ..
Then, in a great battle, against her who held a sword and shield,
1.4.57.81
ayodhayaṃ mahābāṇaiḥ suśārṅgadhanuṣaścyutaiḥ .. 38 ..
I fought with great arrows discharged from my fine Śārṅga bow.
1.4.57.82
khaḍgena ciccheda bāṇānmama sā ca muroḥ sutā ..
And that daughter of Mura cut down my arrows with her sword,
1.4.57.83
samāgamya ca khaḍgena garuḍaṃ mūrdhnyatāḍayat .. 39 ..
and approaching, she struck Garuḍa on the head with her sword.
1.4.57.84
sa ca mohasamāviṣṭo garuḍo'bhūdacetanaḥ ..
And Garuḍa, overwhelmed by bewilderment, became unconscious.
1.4.57.85
tatastasyā vadhārthāya mayā cakraṃ samudyatam .. 1.2.59.40 ..
Then, in order to slay her, I raised my discus.
1.4.57.86
cakraṃ samudyataṃ dṛṣṭvā mayā tasminraṇājire ..
Seeing that the discus had been raised by me on that battlefield,
1.4.57.87
kāmākhyā nāma māṃ devī puraḥ sthitvā vaco'bravīt .. 41 ..
the goddess named Kāmākhyā stood before me and spoke these words:
1.4.57.88
naināṃ haṃtuṃ bhavānarho rakṣaitāṃ puruṣottama ..
“You ought not to slay her; spare her, O Supreme Person!
1.4.57.89
ajeyatvaṃ mayā hyasyā dattaṃ khaḍgaṃ ca kheṭakam .. 42 ..
For unconquerability has been granted to her by me, as well as a sword and a shield,
1.4.57.90
buddhirapratimā cāpi śaktiśca paramā raṇe ..
and also matchless intellect and supreme power in battle.
1.4.57.91
tatastvayā trirātre'pi na jitāsīnmuroḥ sutā .. 43 ..
Therefore, even in three nights, the daughter of Mura was not conquered by you.”
1.4.57.92
evamukte tadā devīṃ vacanaṃ cāhamabravam ..
When she had spoken thus, I then addressed the goddess with these words:
1.4.57.93
ayameṣa nivṛtto'smi vārayaināṃ ca tvaṃ śubhe .. 44 ..
“Here I desist; and do you, auspicious one, restrain her.”
1.4.57.94
tataścāliṃgya tāṃ bhaktāṃ kāmākhyā vākyamabravīt ..
Then Kāmākhyā, embracing her devotee, spoke these words:
1.4.57.95
bhadre raṇānnivartasva nāyaṃ haṃtuṃ kathaṃcana ..45..
“Good lady, turn back from the battle! In no way can this one be slain.
1.4.57.96
śakyaḥ kenāpi samare mādhavo raṇadurjayaḥ ..
Mādhava is invincible in combat, impossible for anyone to overcome in battle.
1.4.57.97
nābhūdasti bhaviṣyo vā ya enaṃ saṃyuge jayet ..46..
There was none, there is none, nor will there ever be anyone who might conquer him in warfare.
1.4.57.98
api vā tryaṃbakaḥ putri nainaṃ śaktaḥ kuto'nyakaḥ ..
Even Tryambaka is not capable [against] him, my daughter; how then could another be?
1.4.57.99
tasmādenaṃ namaskṛtya bhāvinaṃ śvaśuraṃ śubhe .. 47 ..
Therefore, having bowed to him, your future father-in-law, O auspicious one,
1.4.57.100
raṇādasmānnivartasva tavocitamidaṃ sphuṭam ..
turn back from this battle; this is clearly what is proper for you.
1.4.57.101
asya bhrāturhi bhīmasya snuṣā tvaṃ ca bhaviṣyasi .. 48 ..
For you shall become the daughter-in-law of his brother, Bhīma.
1.4.57.102
tasmāttvaṃ śvaśuraṃ bhadre sammānaya janārdanam ..
Therefore, good lady, pay honor to your father-in-law, Janārdana.
1.4.57.103
na ca śokastvayā kāryaḥ pitaraṃ prati paṃḍite .. 49 ..
And you must not grieve for your father, O wise woman.
1.4.57.104
jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyurdhruva janma mṛtasya ca ..
For death is certain for one who is born, and birth is certain for one who has died.
1.4.57.105
bahavaścā'sya vettāro vada kenāpi vāryate .. 1.2.59.50 ..
Many know this; tell me, can it be averted by anyone?
1.4.57.106
ṛṣīṃśca devāṃśca mahāsurāṃśca traividyavidyānpuruṣānnṛpāṃśca ..
Seers, gods, great asuras, men learned in the three Vedas, and kings—
1.4.57.107
kānmṛtyureko na pateta kāle parāvarajño'tra na muhyate kvacit .. 51 ..
upon whom would Death alone not fall in due time? One who knows the higher and the lower is never deluded in this matter.
1.4.57.108
ślāghya eva hi te mṛtyuḥ piturasmājjanārdṛnāt ..
Indeed, your father's death at the hands of Janārdana is truly praiseworthy;
1.4.57.109
sarvapātakanirmukto gato'sau dhāma vaiṣṇavam .. 52 ..
freed from all sins, he has gone to the Vaiṣṇava realm.”
1.4.57.110
evaṃ kāmākhyayā proktā sā ca kāmakaṭaṃkaṭā ..
Addressed thus by Kāmākhyā, that Kāmakaṭaṅkaṭā
1.4.57.111
tyaktvā krodhaṃ ca saṃvṛtya gātrāṇi praṇatā ca mām .. 53 ..
abandoned her wrath, composed her limbs, and bowed down to me.
1.4.57.112
tāmahaṃ sāśiṣaṃ cāpi prāvocaṃ bharatarṣabha ..
And with blessings, O bull among the Bharatas, I said to her:
1.4.57.113
asminneva pure tiṣṭha bhagadattaprapūjitā .. 54 ..
“Remain in this very city, highly honored by Bhagadatta.
1.4.57.114
mayā devyā pṛthivyā ca bhagadattaḥ kṛto nṛpaḥ ..
Bhagadatta has been made king by me and by the goddess Earth.
1.4.57.115
sa te pūjāṃ bahuvidhāṃ kariṣyati svasuryathā .. 55 ..
He will render you various honors, just as to a sister.
1.4.57.116
vasaṃtī cātra taṃ vīraṃ haiḍiṃbaṃ patimāpsyasi ..
Dwelling here, you will obtain that heroic son of Hiḍimbā as your husband.”
1.4.57.117
evamāśvāsya tāṃ devīṃ maurvīṃ cāhaṃ vyasarjayam .. 56 ..
Having thus comforted that Maurvī, the goddess [incarnate], I dismissed her.
1.4.57.118
sā sthitā ca pure tatra gato'haṃ śakrasadma ca ..
She remained in that city, and I went to the abode of Śakra.
1.4.57.119
tato dvāravatīṃ prāpya tvayā saha samāgataḥ .. 57 ..
Then, having reached Dvāravatī, I have come together with you.
1.4.57.120
evameṣocitā dārā haiḍaṃbervidyate śubhā ..
Thus, this auspicious lady is a suitable wife for the son of Hiḍimbā;
1.4.57.121
kāmākhye ca raṇe ghorā yā vidyudiva bhāsate .. 58 ..
and in battle she is terrible, named Kāmākhyā, shining like lightning.
1.4.57.122
na ca rūpaṃ varṇitaṃ me śvaśurasyocitaṃ yataḥ ..
Her beauty has not been described by me, since it is fitting for a father-in-law [to refrain];
1.4.57.123
sādhorhi naitaducitaṃ sarvastrīṇāṃ pravarṇanam .. 59 ..
for it is not proper for a virtuous man to describe all [the attributes of] women.
1.4.57.124
punarekaśca samayaḥ kṛtastaṃ śṛṇu yastayā ..
Furthermore, a condition was made by her; listen to what it is:
1.4.57.125
yo māṃ niruttarāṃ praśne kṛtvaiva vijayetpumān .. 1.2.59.60 ..
‘That man who, having rendered me answerless in a test of questions, conquers me,
1.4.57.126
yo me pratibalaścāpi sa me bhartā bhaviṣyati ..
and who is an equal match in strength for me, he shall become my husband.’
1.4.57.127
evaṃ ca samayaṃ śrutvā bahavo daityarākṣasāḥ .. 61 ..
Hearing of such a condition, many Daityas and Rākṣasas
1.4.57.128
tasyā jayārthamagamaṃste'pi jitvā hatāstayā ..
went to conquer her, but they, overcome by her, were slain.
1.4.57.129
yo ya enāṃ gataḥ pūrvaṃ na sa bhūyo nyavartata .. 62 ..
Whoever went to her previously never returned again,
1.4.57.130
vahneriva prabhāṃ dīptāṃ pataṃgānāṃ samuccayaḥ ..
like a swarm of moths entering the blazing light of a fire.
1.4.57.131
evametādṛśīṃ maurvīṃ jetumutsahate yadi .. 63 ..
If, in this way, the mighty Ghaṭotkaca
1.4.57.132
ghaṭotkaco mahāvīryo bhāryāsya niyataṃ bhavet .. 64 ..
ventures to conquer such a Maurvī, she will certainly become his wife.”
1.4.57.133
.. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca .. ..
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
1.4.57.134
alaṃ sarvaguṇaistasyā yasyāstveko guṇo mahān ..
“Enough of all the good qualities of one whose single fault is so great!
1.4.57.135
kriyate kiṃ hi kṣīreṇa yadi tadviṣamiśritam .. 65 ..
For what is to be done with milk if it is mixed with poison?
1.4.57.136
prāṇādhikaṃ bhaimaseniṃ kathaṃ kevalasāhasāt ..
How could I cast the son of Bhīmasena, who is dearer than life,
1.4.57.137
kṣipeyaṃ tava vākyānāṃ śuddhānāṃ cātha kovidam .. 66 ..
and skilled in your pure teachings, [into danger] out of mere recklessness?
1.4.57.138
anyā api striyaḥ saṃti deśe deśe janārdana ..
There are other women too in every country, O Janārdana;
1.4.57.139
bahvyastāsāṃ varāṃ kāṃcidyoṣitaṃ vaktumarhasi ..67..
of those many, you ought to speak of some excellent woman.”
1.4.57.140
.. bhīma uvāca .. ..
Bhīma said:
1.4.57.141
samyaguktaṃ keśavena vākyaṃ bahvarthamuttamam ..
“Words of great import and excellence have been well spoken by Keśava.
1.4.57.142
rājñā punaḥ snehavaśādyaduktaṃ tanna bhāti me .. 68 ..
On the other hand, what has been spoken by the king out of affection does not appeal to me.
1.4.57.143
kārye duḥsādhya eva syātkṣatriyasya parākramaḥ ..
A kṣatriya's prowess should be displayed only in a difficult undertaking,
1.4.57.144
karīṃdrasyeva yūtheṣu gajānāṃ na mṛgeṣu ca .. 69 ..
just as a lordly elephant's [might is displayed] among herds of elephants, and not against deer.”
1.4.57.145
ātmā prakhyātimāneyaḥ sarvathā vīrapuṃgavaiḥ ..
Eminent heroes should by all means bring renown to themselves;
1.4.57.146
sā ca khyātiḥ kathaṃ jāyedduḥsādhyakaraṇādṛte .. 1.2.59.70 ..
and how could that renown arise without doing what is difficult to accomplish?
1.4.57.147
na hyātmavaśagaṃ pārtha haiḍaṃberasya rakṣaṇam ..
Indeed, O son of Pṛthā, the protection of the son of Hiḍimbā is not under one's own control;
1.4.57.148
yena dattastvayaṃ dhātrā sa enaṃ pālayiṣyati .. 71 ..
he by whom this [son] was given by the Creator, he shall protect him.
1.4.57.149
sarvathoccapadārohe yatnaḥ kāryo vijānatā ..
A wise man should strive in every way to attain an elevated station;
1.4.57.150
tanna sidhyati ceddaivānnāsau doṣo vijānataḥ .. 72 ..
if it does not succeed due to fate, that is not the fault of the wise man.
1.4.57.151
yathā devavratastveko jahre kāśisutāḥ purā ..
Just as Devavrata alone carried off the daughters of Kāśi in the past,
1.4.57.152
tathaika eva haiḍaṃbirmaurvīṃ prāpnotu mā ciram .. 73 ..
so let the son of Hiḍimbā alone obtain Maurvī without delay!
1.4.57.153
.. arjuna uvāca .. ..
Arjuna said:
1.4.57.154
kevalaṃ pauruṣaparaṃ bhīmenoktamidaṃ vacaḥ ..
This statement made by Bhīma is solely intent on manly effort;
1.4.57.155
abalaṃ daivahetutvātprabalaṃ pratibhāti me .. 74 ..
though weak, it seems powerful to me because of fate as its cause.
1.4.57.156
na mṛṣā hi vaco brūte kāmākhyā yā purā'bravīt ..
For Kāmākhyā does not speak falsely, who declared of old:
1.4.57.157
bhīmasenasutaḥ pāṇiṃ tava bhadre grahīṣyati .. 75 ..
‘The son of Bhīmasena will take your hand, O blessed lady.’
1.4.57.158
anena hetunā yātu śīghraṃ tatra ghaṭotkacaḥ ..
For this reason, let Ghaṭotkaca go there quickly.
1.4.57.159
iti me rocate kṛṣṇa tava kiṃ brūhi rocate .. 76 ..
This is what pleases me, O Kṛṣṇa; tell [us], what pleases you?
1.4.57.160
.. kṛṣṇa uvāca .. ..
Kṛṣṇa said:
1.4.57.161
rocate me vacastubhyaṃ bhīmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ..
The word of yours and of the high-souled Bhīma pleases me;
1.4.57.162
na hi tulyo bhaimasenerbuddhau vīrye ca kaścana .. 77 ..
for no one is equal to the son of Bhīmasena in intellect and in valour.
1.4.57.163
aṃtarātmā ca me vetti prāptāmeva muroḥ sutām ..
And my inner self knows that the daughter of Mura is already obtained.
1.4.57.164
tacchīghraṃ yātu haiḍaṃbistvaṃ ca kiṃ putra manyase .. 78 ..
Therefore let the son of Hiḍimbā go quickly. And what do you think, O son?
1.4.57.165
.. ghaṭotkaca uvāca .. ..
Ghaṭotkaca said:
1.4.57.166
na hi nyāyyāḥ svakā vaktuṃ pūjyānāmagrato guṇāḥ ..
It is certainly not fitting to speak of one's own virtues before the venerable;
1.4.57.167
pravṛttā eva bhāsaṃte sadguṇāśca raveḥ karāḥ .. 79 ..
good qualities shine forth only when deployed, like the rays of the sun.
1.4.57.168
sarvathā tatkariṣyāmi pitaro yena me'malāḥ ..
I shall act in every way so that my blameless fathers,
1.4.57.169
lajjiṣyaṃti na saṃsatsu mayā putreṇa pāṃḍavāḥ..1.2.59.80..
the Pāṇḍavas, will not be ashamed in assemblies on account of me, their son.
1.4.57.170
evamuktvā mahābāhurutthāya praṇanāma tān ..
Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed one stood up and bowed down to them;
1.4.57.171
jayāśīrbhiśca pitṛbhirvarddhito gaṃtumaicchata ..81..
and fortified with blessings of victory by his fathers, he desired to depart.
1.4.57.172
taṃ gatukāmamāhedamabhinaṃdya janārdanaḥ ..
Applauding him as he was about to depart, Janārdana said this to him:
1.4.57.173
kathākathanakāle māṃ smarethāstvaṃ jayāvaham ..82..
‘At the time of the contest of words, remember me, the bringer of victory,
1.4.57.174
yathā buddhiṃ sudurbhedyāṃ vardhayāmi balaṃ ca te ..
so that I may increase your intellect, extremely difficult to confound, and your strength.’
1.4.57.175
ityuktvāliṃgya taṃ kṛṣṇo vyasasarjata sāśiṣam .. 83 ..
Having spoken thus, Kṛṣṇa embraced him and sent him off with blessings.
1.4.57.176
tato hiḍaṃbātanayo mahaujāḥ sūryākṣakālākṣamahodarānugaḥ ..
Then the son of Hiḍimbā of great might, followed by Sūryākṣa, Kālākṣa, and Mahodara,
1.4.57.177
viyatpathaṃ prāpya jagāma tatpuraṃ prāgjyotiṣaṃ nāma dinavyapāye .. 84 .. ..
reached the path of the sky and went to that city named Prāgjyotiṣa at the close of day.
1.4.57.178
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe kaumārikākhaṇḍe barbarikopā khyāne ghaṭotkacasya prāgjyotiṣapuraṃ prati gamanavarṇanaṃnāmaikonaṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 59 ..
Thus ends the fifty-ninth chapter, entitled 'Description of the Departure of Ghaṭotkaca to the City of Prāgjyotiṣa' in the narrative of Barbarīka, in the Kaumārikākhaṇḍa of the first [section], the Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand verses.
