Having stayed seven nights at this sacred ford with his brothers,
1.4.63.3
yudhiṣṭhiro mahātejā gamanāyopacakrame .. 1 ..
The immensely radiant Yudhiṣṭhira prepared to depart.
1.4.63.4
prabhāte vimale snātvā devīrliṃgānyathārcya ca ..
At clear dawn, having bathed and worshipped the goddesses and liṅgas in order,
1.4.63.5
kṛtvā pradakṣiṇaṃ kṣetraṃ devīstotraṃ jajāpa saḥ ..
And circumambulating the sacred field, he chanted the hymn to the Goddess,
1.4.63.6
prayāṇakāleṣu sadā japyaṃ kṛṣṇena kīrtitam .. 2 ..
Which had been proclaimed by Kṛṣṇa to be recited always at times of departure.
1.4.63.7
.. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca .. ..
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
1.4.63.8
devi pūjye mahāśakte kṛṣṇasya bhagini priye ..
"O Goddess, O adorable one, O great Śakti, beloved sister of Kṛṣṇa,
1.4.63.9
natvā tvāṃ śaraṇaṃ yāmi manovākkāyakarmabhiḥ .. 3 ..
Bowing to you, I seek refuge through actions of mind, speech, and body.
1.4.63.10
saṃkarṣaṇābhayadāne kṛṣṇacchavisamaprabhe ..
O giver of fearlessness to Saṃkarṣaṇa, of brilliance equal to Kṛṣṇa's complexion,
1.4.63.11
ekānaṃśe mahādevi putravattrāhi māṃ śiva .. 4 ..
O Ekānaṃśā, O great Goddess, O auspicious one, protect me like a son!
1.4.63.12
tvayā tatamidaṃ viśvaṃ jagadavyaktarūpayā ..
This entire world is pervaded by you whose form is unmanifest.
1.4.63.13
iti matvā tvāṃ gato'smi śaraṇaṃ trāhi māṃ śubhe .. 5 ..
Thinking thus, I have taken refuge in you; protect me, O auspicious lady!
1.4.63.14
kāryārambheṣu sarveṣu sānugena mayā tava ..
In all undertakings of tasks, along with my followers, my own self
1.4.63.15
sva ātmā kalpito bhadre jñātvaitadanukaṃpyatāma .. 6 ..
Has been dedicated to you, O gentle lady. Knowing this, have compassion!"

Sūta said:
1.4.63.17
iti bruvāṇaṃ rājānaṃ śirobaddhājaliṃ tadā ..
To the king speaking thus, holding his hands joined above his head at that time,
1.4.63.18
vāyuputraḥ prahasyaiva sāsūyamidamabravīt .. 7 ..
The son of the Wind-god laughed and spoke this with indignation:
1.4.63.19
ye tvāṃ rājanvadaṃtyevaṃ sarvajño'yaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ..
"O king, those who say of you, 'This Yudhiṣṭhira is omniscient'—
1.4.63.20
vṛthaiva vacanaṃ teṣāṃ yatastvaṃ vetsi nāṇvapi .. 8 ..
Futile indeed is their word, since you do not know even an atom.
1.4.63.21
ko hi prajñāvatāṃ mukhyaḥ sarvaśāstravidāṃvaraḥ ..
For who that is chief among the wise, best among those knowing all treatises,
1.4.63.22
strīṇāṃ śaraṇamāpadyedṛjurbuddhiryathā bhavān .. 9 ..
Would go to women for refuge, being simple-minded as you are?
1.4.63.23
yatastvameva vetsīdaṃ sarvaśāstreṣu kīrtyate ..
Since you yourself know that it is declared in all treatises:
1.4.63.24
jaḍeyaṃ prakṛtirmūḍhā yayā saṃmohyate jagat .. 1.2.65.10 ..
'Insentient is this prakṛti, dull, by which the world is deluded.'
1.4.63.25
sacetanaṃ ca puruṣaṃ prakṛtiṃ ca vicetanām ..
The wise call the puruṣa conscious, and prakṛti unconscious,
1.4.63.26
prāhurbudhā narādhyakṣa puṃsaścaprakṛtiḥ priyā .. 11 ..
O ruler of men; and prakṛti is dear to the spirit.
1.4.63.27
tatsvayaṃ puruṣo bhūtvā yudhiṣṭhira vṛthāmate ..
Therefore, being yourself a man, O Yudhiṣṭhira of vain intellect,
1.4.63.28
prakṛtiṃ nauṣi natvā tāṃ hāso me'tīva jāyate .. 12 ..
You praise prakṛti after bowing to her—excessive laughter arises in me!
1.4.63.29
ārohayecchiro naiva kvaciddhitvā upānahau ..
One should never place shoes on one's head after taking them off;
1.4.63.30
yathā sa mūḍho bhavati devībhaktiratastathā .. 13 ..
Just as such a man is foolish, so is one intent on devotion to the Goddess.
1.4.63.31
yadi te bandivatpārtha tiṣṭhedvāṇyanivāritā ..
If your speech stood unrestrained like a bard's, O Pārtha,
1.4.63.32
tatkimarthaṃ mahādevaṃ na stauṣi tripurāntakam .. 14 ..
Then for what reason do you not praise Mahādeva, the destroyer of Tripura?
1.4.63.33
alakṣyamiti vā matvā maheśānaṃ mahāmate ..
Or, if you deem Maheśāna to be imperceptible, O wise one,
1.4.63.34
tataḥ kimartha dāśārhaṃ na stauṣi puruṣottamam .. 15 ..
Then for what reason do you not praise the Dāśārha, the supreme person?
1.4.63.35
yasya prasādādasmābhiḥ prāptā drupadanaṃdinī ..
By whose grace the daughter of Drupada was obtained by us,
1.4.63.36
indraprasthe tathā rājyaṃ rājasūyastvayā kṛtaḥ .. 16 ..
And likewise the kingdom in Indraprastha, and the Rājasūya was performed by you,
1.4.63.37
vijayena dhanurlabdhaṃ jarāsandho mayā hataḥ ..
The bow was obtained by Vijaya, Jarāsandha was slain by me,
1.4.63.38
pratyāhartuṃ tathecchāmaḥ kauravebhyaḥ svakāṃ śriyam .. 17 ..
And likewise we wish to recover our royal fortune from the Kauravas—
1.4.63.39
yasya prasādāttaṃ muktvā kṛṣṇaṃ hā stauṣi yajjayī ..
Leaving aside that Kṛṣṇa by whose grace you are victorious, alas, you praise [a female]!
1.4.63.40
atha svayaṃ kauravāṇāmutpannaṃ kulasattame .. 18 ..
Or rather, [has delusion] arisen naturally in the best of the family of the Kauravas?
1.4.63.41
jānannātmānamalpatvādbuddherna stauṣi yādavam ..
If, knowing yourself [inferior] due to smallness of intellect, you do not praise the Yādava,
1.4.63.42
tatkimarthaṃ mahāvīryaṃ na stauṣyarjunamuttamam .. 19 ..
then why do you not praise the most excellent Arjuna of great valor? // 19
1.4.63.43
yena viddhaṃ purā lakṣyaṃ yena karṇādayo jitāḥ ..
By whom the target was pierced long ago, by whom Karṇa and others were conquered,
1.4.63.44
yena tatkhāṃḍavaṃ dagdhaṃ yajñe yena nṛpā jitāḥ .. 1.2.65.20 ..
by whom that Khāṇḍava [forest] was burned, by whom kings were vanquished at the sacrifice, // 1.2.65.20
1.4.63.45
śrūyate yena vikramya maheśāno'pi nirjitaḥ ..
and by whose prowess even Maheśāna, it is heard, was overcome?
1.4.63.46
svarlokasaṃsthitasyāsya śaraṇaṃ yāhi stauṣi ca .. 21 ..
Go for refuge to him who resides in heaven, and praise him! // 21
1.4.63.47
athavā tena śakreṇa rājyaṃ me nārpitaṃ kutaḥ ..
Or else, thinking, ‘Why was the kingdom not granted to me by that Śakra?’
1.4.63.48
iti matvā vṛthaiva tvaṃ na stauṣi bhrātaraṃ mama .. 22 ..
in vain do you not praise my brother? // 22
1.4.63.49
tato māṃ vā kathaṃ vīraṃ na stauṣi tvaṃ yudhiṣṭhira ..
Then why, O Yudhiṣṭhira, do you not praise me, the hero,
1.4.63.50
yena tvaṃ rakṣitaḥ pūrvaṃ lākṣāgehāgnimadhyataḥ .. 23 ..
by whom you were formerly protected from the midst of the fire in the lac house? // 23
1.4.63.51
vṛkṣeṇāhatya madreśo nadīṃ śuṣkāṃ prasāritaḥ ..
The king of Madra was struck with a tree and stretched out like a dry river;
1.4.63.52
rājarājastathā yena jarāsaṃdho nipātitaḥ .. 24 ..
likewise, the king of kings Jarāsandha was struck down [by me]. // 24
1.4.63.53
pūrvā diṅnirjitā yena yena pūrvaṃ bako hataḥ ..
By whom the eastern quarter was conquered; by whom formerly Baka was slain,
1.4.63.54
hiḍambaśca mahāvīraḥ kirmīraścādhunā vane ..25..
and the mighty Hiḍamba, and just now Kirmīra in the forest! // 25
1.4.63.55
kālekāle ca rakṣāmi tvāmevāhaṃ sadānugaḥ ..
From time to time I alone protect you, ever your follower;
1.4.63.56
na tāṃ paśyāmi rakṣaṃtīṃ natvā yāṃ stauṣi bhārata..26..
I do not see her protecting you—the one whom you bow to and praise, O Bhārata! // 26
1.4.63.57
atha kṣudhābalaṃ jñātvā māmaudarikasattamam..
Or perhaps, knowing me to be driven by hunger and foremost among gluttons,
1.4.63.58
krūraṃ sāhasikaṃ caiva na stauṣi kṣamiṇāṃ varaḥ..27..
cruel and reckless, you—the foremost of the patient—do not praise [me]? // 27
1.4.63.59
tataḥ susaṃyato bhūtvā praṇavaṃ samudīrayan..
Therefore, becoming well-restrained and uttering the praṇava,
1.4.63.60
kathaṃ na yāsi mārge tvaṃ vṛthālāpo hi doṣabhāk..28..
why do you not walk along the path? For idle talk brings fault. // 28
1.4.63.61
pretāḥ piśācā rakṣāṃsi vṛthālāparataṃ naram ..
Ghosts, piśācas, and rākṣasas possess a man who indulges in idle chatter;
1.4.63.62
āviśaṃti tadāviṣṭo vaktābaddhaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ..29..
possessed by them, the speaker babbles nonsense again and again. // 29
1.4.63.63
vṛthālāpī yadaśnāti yatkaroti śubhaṃ kvacit ..
Whatever an idle talker eats, whatever good deed he performs anywhere,
1.4.63.64
pretāditṛptaye sarvamiti śāstraviniścayaḥ ..1.2.65.30..
all of it is only for the gratification of ghosts and the like: so is the conclusion of the scriptures. // 1.2.65.30
1.4.63.65
nāyaṃ tasyāsti vai lokaḥ kuta eva paro bhavet ..
This world is not his, nor indeed can there be a higher world for him;
1.4.63.66
tasmādvijānatā yatnāttyājyameva vṛthā vacaḥ .. 31 ..
therefore, a wise person must diligently abandon useless speech. // 31
1.4.63.67
evaṃ saṃsmārito'pi tvaṃ yadi bhūyaḥ pravartase ..
If, even after being thus reminded, you continue in this manner,
1.4.63.68
bhūtāviṣṭaścikitsyo no vividhairauṣadhairbhavān .. 32 ..
you, as one possessed by spirits, must be treated by us with various medicines! // 32
1.4.63.69
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
1.4.63.70
iti pravarṇitāṃ śrutvā bhīmasenena bhāratīm ..
Having heard this speech uttered by Bhīmasena,
1.4.63.71
paṭīmiva pravitatāṃ vihasyāha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ .. 33 ..
spread out like a woven cloth, Yudhiṣṭhira smiled and said: // 33
1.4.63.72
nūnaṃ tvamalpavijñāno vedādhītāstvayā vṛthā ..
“Surely your understanding is small, and the Vedas were studied by you in vain,
1.4.63.73
mātaraṃ sarvabhūtānāmaṃbikāṃ yanna manyase .. 34 ..
since you do not respect Ambikā, the mother of all beings. // 34
1.4.63.74
strīpakṣa iti matvā tāmavajānāsi bhoḥ katham ..
Thinking ‘She belongs to the female sex,’ why do you despise her, sir?
1.4.63.75
strī satī na praṇamyā kiṃ tvayā kuntī vṛkodara .. 35 ..
Being a woman, is virtuous Kuntī not to be saluted by you, O Vṛkodara? // 35
1.4.63.76
yadi na syānmahāmāyā brahmaviṣṇuśivārcitā ..
If the Mahāmāyā, worshipped by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva, did not exist,
1.4.63.77
tava dehodbhavaḥ pārtha kathaṃ syāttattvato vada .. 36 ..
how could your body have been born, O son of Pṛthā? Speak in accordance with the truth! // 36
1.4.63.78
īśvaraḥ paramātmā tāṃ tyaktuṃ śaktaḥ kathaṃ na hi ..
Was not Īśvara, the Supreme Self, capable of abandoning her?
1.4.63.79
punarbheje yato devīṃ tena manye mahorjitām .. 37 ..
Yet since he resorted to the Goddess again, I consider her exceedingly mighty. // 37
1.4.63.80
vāsudevo'pi nityaṃ tāṃ stauti śaktiṃ parātparām ..
Even Vāsudeva constantly praises that Power, higher than the highest.
1.4.63.81
ahaṃ yadi cikitsyaḥ syāṃ cikitsyaḥ so'pi kiṃ bhavān .. 38 ..
If I am to be treated [as mad], are you also going to treat him? // 38
1.4.63.82
naivaṃ bhūyaḥ pravaktavyaṃ maurkhyātprati maheśvarīm ..
You must not speak like this again out of foolishness toward Maheśvarī!
1.4.63.83
bhūmau nipatya śaraṇaṃ yāhi cetsukhamicchasi .. 39 ..
Fall to the ground and take refuge in her if you desire happiness!” // 39

Bhīma said:
1.4.63.85

“By all means rogues try to instruct a man who has fallen into their hands.
1.4.63.86
idamevauṣadhaṃ tatra taiḥ sārdhaṃ jalpanaṃ na hi .. 1.2.65.40 ..
The only remedy there is not to engage in talk with them! // 1.2.65.40
1.4.63.87
muṇḍe muṇḍe matirbhinnā satyametannṛpa sphuṭam ..
Every head has a different mind—this is clearly true, O king.
1.4.63.88
svābhīṣṭaṃ kurute sarvaḥ kurmo'bhīṣṭaṃ vayaṃ tathā .. 41 ..
Everyone does as he pleases; likewise let us do as we please. // 41
1.4.63.89
nāgāyutasamaprāṇo vāyuputro vṛkodaraḥ ..
Endowed with strength equal to ten thousand elephants, the son of Vāyu, Vṛkodara,
1.4.63.90
na striyaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchedvāṅmātreṇa kathaṃcana .. 42 ..
would under no circumstances seek refuge in a woman, even by mere word!” // 42
1.4.63.91
ityuktvā vacanaṃ bhīmo hyanuvavrāja taṃ nṛpam ..
Having spoken these words, Bhīma followed behind that king;
1.4.63.92
rājāpi sānugo yāto na sādhviti muhurbruvan .. 43 ..
the king also went on with his followers, repeatedly saying, “This is not good.” // 43
1.4.63.93
tataḥ kṣaṇena vikalastvitaścetaśca praskhalat ..
Then in a moment, distressed and stumbling here and there,
1.4.63.94

Bhīma, utterly bewildered, spoke these words to the king: // 44

I cannot see at all with my two eyes! What is this affliction of mine?” // 45
1.4.63.97
.. rājovāca ..
The king said:
1.4.63.98
bhīmabhīma dhruvaṃ devī kupitā te maheśvarī ..
“Bhīma, O Bhīma, surely the Goddess Maheśvarī is enraged at you!
1.4.63.99
tena naṣṭe cakṣuṣī te mahāsāhasavallabha .. 46 ..
Because of that your eyes are lost, O lover of great rashness! // 46
1.4.63.100

Therefore, go right now for refuge to the Supreme Goddess!”
1.4.63.101

1.4.63.104
prabhāvapratyayārthaṃ hi sadā nindāmi tāṃ punaḥ .. 48 ..
Indeed, it was only to test her power that I repeatedly reviled her.
1.4.63.105

Therefore, having seen such power, falling upon the surface of the earth,
1.4.63.106

having bowed with mind, speech, and intellect, I take refuge and praise the Mother.”
