śakraṃ śaptvā tadā devī viṣṇuṃ cā'tha vacobravīt .. 83 ..
Having cursed Śakra, the goddess then spoke these words to Viṣṇu:
16.165.84
guruvākyena te janma yadā martye bhavi ṣyati ..
bhāryāvirahajaṃ duḥkhaṃ tadā tvaṃ tatra bhokṣyase .. 84 ..
When your birth among mortals shall take place due to the curse of a guru, / then you will experience the sorrow born of separation from your wife.
16.165.85
hṛtāṃ śatrugaṇaiḥ patnīṃ pare pāre mahodadheḥ ..
na ca tvaṃ jñāyase sītāṃ śokopahacetanaḥ .. 85 ..
With your wife abducted by hosts of enemies to the far shore of the great ocean, / you will not know Sītā, your mind overcome by grief.
16.165.86
bhrātrā saha parāṃ kāṣṭhāmāpadaṃ duḥkhitastathā ..
paśūnāṃ caiva saṃyogaścirakālaṃ bhaviṣyati .. 86 ..
Afflicted by sorrow, you will face the utmost extremity of misfortune together with your brother, / and your association with beasts will last for a long time.
16.165.87
tathā''ha rudraṃ kupitā yadā dāruvane sthitaḥ ..
tadā te munayaḥ kruddhāḥ śāpaṃ dāsyaṃti te hara .. 87 ..
Likewise she, enraged, spoke to Rudra: 'When you are staying in the pine forest, / then the enraged sages will utter a curse upon you, O Hara:
16.165.88
bhobhoḥ kāpālika kṣudra patnyo'smākaṃ jihīrṣasi ..
tadetadbhūṣitaṃ liṃga bhūmau rudra patiṣyati .. 88 ..
"O vile Kāpālika, you wish to ravish our wives! / Therefore this adorned liṅga of yours shall fall to the ground, O Rudra!"
16.165.89
vihīnaḥ pauruṣeṇa tvaṃ muniśāpācca pīḍitaḥ ..
gaṃgātīre sthitā patnī sā tvāmāśvāsayiṣyati .. 89 ..
Deprived of virility and tormented by the curse of the sages, / your wife, standing on the bank of the Gaṅgā, will comfort you.'
16.165.90
agne tvaṃ sarvabhakṣo'si pūrvaṃ putreṇa me kṛtaḥ ..
bhrūṇahā dharma ityeṣa kathaṃ dagdhaṃ dahāmyaham .. 7.1.165.90 ..
'O Agni, you were previously made an eater of everything by my son; / [thinking,] "The killer of an embryo is righteousness: how can I burn what is already burnt?",
16.165.91
jātavedasa rudrastvāṃ retasā plāvayiṣyati ..
medhyeṣu ca kṛtajvālā jvālayā tvāṃ jvaliṣyati .. 91 ..
O Jātavedas, Rudra will flood you with his semen, / and a flame ignited among sacrificial offerings will burn you with its blaze.'
16.165.92
brāhmaṇānṛtvijaḥ sarvānsāvitrī hyaśapattadā .. 92 ..
Then Sāvitrī cursed all the brahmins who were officiating priests:
16.165.93
pratigrahāgnihotrāśca vṛthā dārā vṛthāśramāḥ ..
sadā kṣetrāṇi tīrthāni lobhādeva gamiṣyatha .. 93 ..
'Your receiving of gifts and your Agnihotra fires will be in vain, your wives in vain, your efforts in vain. / You will constantly wander to sacred fields and sacred fords purely out of greed.
16.165.94
parānneṣu sadā tṛptā atṛptāḥ svagṛheṣu ca ..
ayājyayājanaṃ kṛtvā kutsitasya pratigraham .. 94 ..
You will always be satisfied with food from others, and never satisfied in your own homes. / Having performed sacrifices for those unfit to sacrifice, and having accepted gifts from the despicable,
16.165.95
vṛthā dhanārjanaṃ kṛtvā vyavaścaiva tathā vṛthā ..
mṛtānāṃ tena pretatvaṃ bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ .. 95 ..
having acquired wealth in vain, and your expenditure also being in vain, / when dead, you will become hungry ghosts on that account, without doubt.'
16.165.96
evaṃ śakraṃ tathā viṣṇuṃ rudraṃ vai pāvakaṃ tathā ..
brahmāṇaṃ brāhmaṇāṃścaiva sarvāṃstānaśapattadā .. 96 ..
Thus she cursed Śakra, Viṣṇu, Rudra, and Pāvaka, / as well as Brahmā and all those brahmins at that time.
16.165.97
śāpaṃ dattvā tathā teṣāṃ tadā sāvasthitā sthirā .. 97 ..
Having pronounced the curse upon them, she then stood firm.
16.165.98
lakṣmīḥ prāha sakhīṃ tāṃ ca indrāṇī ca varānanā ..
anyā devyastathā prāhuḥ sā''ha sthāsyāmi nātra vai ..
tatra cāhaṃ gamiṣyāmi yatra śroṣye na tu dhvanim .. 98 ..
Lakṣmī, lovely-faced Indrāṇī, and the other goddesses said to that friend: / 'I shall not stay here; / I shall go there where I will not hear the noise.'
16.165.99
tatastāḥ pramadāḥ sarvāḥ prayātāḥ svaṃ niketanam ..
sāvitrī kupitā tāsāṃ punaḥ śāpāya codyatā .. 99 ..
Then all those women departed to their own abodes. / Enraged at them, Sāvitrī prepared to curse them again:
16.165.100
yasmānmāṃ saṃparityajya gatāstā devayoṣitaḥ ..
tāsāmapi tathā śāpaṃ pradāsye kupitā bhṛśam .. 7.1.165.100 ..
'Because those wives of the gods have gone away, abandoning me, / exceedingly enraged, I shall pronounce a curse upon them as well.
16.165.101
naikatra vāso lakṣmyāstu bhaviṣyati kadācana ..
rudrāpi caṃcalā tāvanmūrkheṣu ca vasiṣyasi .. 101 ..
Lakṣmī shall never have an abode in one single place; / even if restrained, you will be fickle, and you will dwell among fools,
16.165.102
mleccheṣu parvatīyeṣu kutsite kuṣṭhite tathā ..
vācāṭe cāvalipte ca abhiśaste durātmani ..
evaṃvidhe nare tubhyaṃ vasatiḥ śāpakāritā .. 102 ..
among barbarians, mountain-dwellers, the despicable, the leprous, / the talkative, the arrogant, the defiled, and the wicked-minded; / an abode with such a man is ordained for you by my curse.'
16.165.103
śāpaṃ dattvā tatastasyā indrāṇīmaśapattadā .. 103 ..
Having pronounced the curse upon her, she then cursed Indrāṇī:
16.165.104
tvaṣṭurvācā gṛhītendre patyau te duṣṭakāriṇi ..
nahuṣāya gate rājye dṛṣṭvā tvāṃ yācayiṣyati .. .. 104 ..
'When your husband Indra is seized at Tvaṣṭṛ’s word, O evil-doer, / and when the kingdom has passed to Nahuṣa, he will ask for you upon seeing you:
16.165.105
ahamindraḥ kathaṃ caiṣā nopatiṣṭhati cālasā ..
sarvāndevānhaniṣyāmi lapsye nāhaṃ śacīṃ yadi .. 105 ..
"I am Indra; why does she not attend upon me, sluggish woman? / I will slay all the gods if I do not obtain Śacī!"
16.165.106
naṣṭā tvaṃ ca tadā śastā vane mahati duḥkhitā ..
vasiṣyasi durācāre śāpena mama garvite .. 106 ..
And then, having disappeared, struck down and distressed in the great forest, / you will dwell, O arrogant woman of wicked conduct, by my curse!'
16.165.107
devabhāryāsu sarvāsu tadā śāpamayacchata .. 107 ..
She then bestowed a curse upon all the wives of the gods:
16.165.108
na cāpatyakṛtā prītiḥ sarvāsveva bhaviṣyati ..
dahyamānā divārātrau vaṃdhyāśabdena duḥkhitāḥ ..108..
'There shall be no joy born of offspring for any of you; / burning day and night, you will be grieved by the word "barren".'
16.165.109
gaurīmevaṃ tathā śaptvā sā devī varavarṇinī ..
uccai ruroda sāvitrī bhartṛ yajñādbahiḥ sthitā .. 109 ..
Having thus cursed Gaurī as well, that goddess of excellent complexion, / Sāvitrī, standing outside her husband’s sacrifice, wept loudly.
16.165.110
rodamānā tu sā dṛṣṭā viṣṇunā ca prasāditā ..
mā rodīstvaṃ viśālākṣi ehyāgaccha sadaḥ śubhe .. 7.1.165.110 ..
Seen weeping, she was conciliated by Viṣṇu: / 'Do not weep, O large-eyed lady! Come, enter the assembly, O auspicious one!
16.165.111
praviṣṭā ca śubhe yāge mekhalāṃ kṣaumavāsasī ..
gṛhāṇa dīkṣāṃ brahmāṇi pādau te praṇame śubhe .. 111 ..
Enter the auspicious sacrifice, take the girdle and the two silken garments, / receive the consecration, O consort of Brahmā; I bow at your feet, O auspicious one!'
16.165.112
evamuktā'bravīdenaṃ nāhaṃ kuryāṃ vacastava ..
tatrāhaṃ ca gamiṣyāmi yatra śroṣye na ca dhvanim .. 112 ..
Addressed thus, she said to him: 'I will not obey your word. / I shall go to a place where I will not hear the noise.'
16.165.113
etāvaduktvā vyaramaduccaiḥ sthāne kṣitau sthitā .. 113 ..
Having said this much, standing upon the ground at an elevated place, she ceased.
16.165.114
viṣṇustadagrataḥ sthitvā baddhvā ca karasaṃpuṭam ..
tuṣṭāva praṇato bhūtvā bhaktyā paramayā yutaḥ .. 114 ..
Standing before her and joining his palms, / Viṣṇu bowed down and praised her, filled with supreme devotion.
16.165.115
.. viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
namo'stu te mahādevi bhūrbhuvaḥsvastrayīmayi ..
sāvitri durgatariṇi tvaṃ vāṇī saptadhā smṛtā .. 115 ..
Viṣṇu said:
“Salutations unto you, O great goddess, who consist of the three worlds—Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, and Svaḥ—and the three Vedas!
O Sāvitrī, deliverer from perils! You are remembered as speech sevenfold.
16.165.116
sarvāṇi stutiśāstrāṇi lakṣaṇāni tathaiva ca ..
bhaviṣyā sarvaśāstrāṇāṃ tvaṃ tu devi namo'stu te .. .. 116 ..
All scriptures of praise, and likewise all treatises on characteristics,
and the future forms of all sacred sciences are you, O goddess. Salutations unto you!
16.165.117
śvetā tvaṃ śvetarūpāsi śaśāṃkena samānanā ..
śaśiraśmiprakāśena hariṇorasi rājase ..
divyakuṃḍalapūrṇābhyāṃ śravaṇābhyāṃ vibhūṣitā .. .. 117 ..
You are white, of white form, your face like the moon.
You shine upon Hari’s chest with the radiance of moonbeams,
adorned with ears full of celestial earrings.
16.165.118
tvaṃ siddhistvaṃ tathā ṛddhiḥ kīrtiḥ śrīḥ saṃtatirmatiḥ ..
saṃdhyā rātri prabhātastvaṃ kālarātristvameva ca .. 118 ..
You are accomplishment, and likewise prosperity, fame, fortune, progeny, and intellect.
You are twilight, night, dawn, and Kālarātri herself.
16.165.119
karṣukāṇāṃ yathā sītā bhūtānāṃ dhāriṇī tathā ..
evaṃ stuvaṃtaṃ sāvitrī viṣṇuṃ provāca suvratā .. 119 ..
Just as the furrow is to farmers, so are you the supporter of all beings.”
To Viṣṇu, who was thus praising her, Sāvitrī of virtuous vows spoke:
16.165.120
samyakstutā tvayā putra ajeyastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi ..
avatāre sadā vatsa pitṛmātṛsu vallabhaḥ .. 7.1.165.120 ..
“I have been fittingly praised by you, my son. You shall be invincible.
In your incarnation, my child, you will always be dearly loved by your father and mother.
16.165.121
anena stavarājena stoṣyate yastu māṃ sadā ..
sarvadoṣavinirmuktaḥ paraṃ sthānaṃ gamiṣyati .. 121 ..
Whoever continually praises me with this king of hymns,
freed from all faults, will go to the supreme realm.
16.165.122
gaccha yajñaṃ ciraṃ tasya samāptiṃ naya putraka .. 122 ..
Go, bring that long-delayed sacrifice of his to completion, my little son!
16.165.123
kurukṣetre prayāge ca bhaviṣye yajñakarmaṇi ..
samīpagā sthitā bhartuḥ kariṣye tava bhāṣitam .. 123 ..
At Kurukṣetra, at Prayāga, and in the future sacrificial rite,
standing by my husband's side, I shall do as you have spoken.”
16.165.124
evamukto gato viṣṇurbrahmaṇaḥ sada uttamam ..
sāvitrī tu samāyātā prabhāse varavarṇini ..124..
Thus addressed, Viṣṇu went to Brahmā’s excellent assembly-hall.
Sāvitrī, however, came to Prabhāsa, O fair-complexioned lady.
16.165.125
gatāyāmatha sāvitryāṃ gāyatrī vākyamabravīt ..125..
When Sāvitrī had departed, Gāyatrī spoke these words:
16.165.126
śṛṇvaṃtu munayo vākyaṃ madīyaṃ bhartṛsannidhau ..
yadahaṃ vacmi saṃtuṣṭā varadānāya codyatā .. 126 ..
“Let the sages listen to my words in the presence of my husband,
which I speak, well-pleased and eager to grant boons.
16.165.127
brahmāṇaṃ pūjayiṣyaṃti narā bhaktisamanvitāḥ ..
teṣāṃ vastraṃ dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ dārāḥ saukhyaṃ sutāśca vai .. 127 ..
Men who worship Brahmā endowed with devotion,
theirs shall be garments, wealth, grain, wives, happiness, and sons indeed.
16.165.128
avicchinnaṃ tathā saukhyaṃ gṛhaṃ vai putrapautrikam ..
bhuktvā'sau suciraṃ kālaṃ tato mokṣaṃ gamiṣyati ..128..
And after enjoying unbroken happiness and a home with sons and grandsons
for a very long time, he shall go to liberation.
16.165.129
śakrāhaṃ te varaṃ vacmi saṃgrāme śatrubhiḥ saha ..
tadā brahmā mocayitā gatvā śatruniketanam .. 129 ..
O Śakra, I tell you your boon: when you are in battle with your enemies,
then Brahmā, having gone to the enemy’s abode, will deliver you.
16.165.130
saputraśatrunāśāttvaṃ lapsyase ca paraṃ mudam ..
akaṃṭakaṃ mahadrājyaṃ trailokye te bhaviṣyati .. 7.1.165.130 ..
From the destruction of your enemy and his sons you will obtain supreme joy,
and yours will be an untroubled, great dominion in the three worlds.
16.165.131
martyaloke yadā viṣṇo hyavatāraṃ kariṣyasi ..
bhrātrā saha paraṃ duḥkhaṃ svabhāryā haraṇaṃ ca yat .. 131 ..
When, O Viṣṇu, you make an incarnation in the mortal world,
and undergo great sorrow along with your brother, as well as the abduction of your wife,
16.165.132
hatvā śatruṃ punarbhāryāṃ lapsyase surasannidhau ..
gṛhītvā tāṃ punaḥ prājyaṃ rājyaṃ kṛtvā gamiṣyasi .. 132 ..
having slain the enemy, you will regain your wife in the presence of the gods.
Taking her back, you will rule an extensive kingdom and then depart.
16.165.133
ekādaśa sahasrāṇi kṛtvā rājyaṃ punardivam..
khyātiste vipulā loke cānurāgo bhaviṣyati.. 133 ..
Having ruled the kingdom for eleven thousand [years], you will return to heaven.
Your renown in the world will be widespread, and there will be great affection for you.”
16.165.134
gāyatrī brāhmaṇāṃstāṃśca sarvānevābravīdidam ..134 ..
Gāyatrī also said this to all those brahmins:
16.165.135
yuṣmākaṃ prīṇanaṃ kṛtvā' tṛptiṃ yāsyaṃti devatāḥ..
bhavaṃto bhūmidevā vai sarve pūjyā bhaviṣyatha .. 135 ..
“By gratifying you, the gods will attain satisfaction.
You, indeed, will become gods upon earth, worthy of worship by all.
16.165.136
yuṣmākaṃ pūjanaṃ kṛtvā dattvā dānānyanekaśaḥ..
prāṇāyāmena caikena sarvametattariṣyatha..136..
Having honoured you and given numerous gifts,
and with a single breath-control, they will cross over all this.
16.165.137
prabhāse tu viśeṣeṇa japtvā māṃ vedamātaram..
pratigrahakṛtāndoṣānna prāpsyadhvaṃ dvijottamāḥ..137 ..
Especially in Prabhāsa, by reciting me, the Mother of the Vedas,
you will not incur the faults arising from accepting gifts, O best of the twice-born.
16.165.138
puṣkare cānnadānena prītāḥ sarve ca devatāḥ ..
ekasminbhojite vipre koṭirbhavatibhojitā .. 138 ..
And at Puṣkara, all the gods are pleased by the gift of food.
When one brahmin is fed, ten million are considered fed.
16.165.139
brahmahatyādipāpāni duritāni ca yāni ca ..
tariṣyaṃti narāḥ sarve datte yuṣmatkare dhane .. 139 ..
Whatever sins there are, such as the killing of a brahmin, and other misdeeds,
all men will cross over them when wealth is placed in your hands.
16.165.140
mahīyadhve tu jāpyena prāṇāyāmaistribhiḥ kṛtaiḥ ..
brahmahatyāsamaṃ pāpaṃ tatkṣaṇādeva naśyati .. 7.1.165.140 ..
You will be magnified by recitation; when three breath-controls are performed,
sin equal to the killing of a brahmin is destroyed that very moment.
16.165.141
daśabhirjanmajanitaṃ śatena tu purā kṛtam ..
triyugaṃ tu sahasreṇa gāyatrī haṃti kilbiṣam .. 141 ..
Gāyatrī destroys the sin born of this life with ten [recitations],
that committed in a former birth with a hundred, and that of three yugas with a thousand.
16.165.142
evaṃ jñātvā sadā pūjyā jāpye ca mama vai kṛte ..
bhaviṣyadhvaṃ na sandeho nātra kāryā vicāraṇā .. 142 ..
Knowing this, you will ever be worthy of worship when my recitation is performed;
of this there is no doubt, and no hesitation should be entertained here.
16.165.143
oṃkāreṇa trimātreṇa sārdhena ca viśeṣataḥ ..
pūjyāḥ sarve na sandeho japtvā māṃ śirasā saha .. 143 ..
Accompanied by the oṃkāra of three and a half measures especially,
all become worthy of worship, without a doubt, having recited me together with the Śiras.
16.165.144
aṣṭākṣarasthitā cāhaṃ jagadvyāptaṃ mayā tvidam ..
mātā'haṃ sarvavedānāṃ vedaiḥ sarvairalaṅkatā .. 144..
I abide in eight syllables, and this universe is pervaded by me.
I am the Mother of all the Vedas, adorned by all the Vedas.
16.165.145
jatvā māṃ paramāṃ sirddhi paśyanti dvijasattamāḥ ..
prādhānyaṃ mama jāpyena sarveṣāṃ vo bhaviṣyati .. 145 ..
Having known me, the best of the twice-born behold supreme perfection.
Through the recitation of me, pre-eminence shall belong to all of you.
16.165.146
gāyatrīsāramātro'pi varaṃ vipraḥ suyantritaḥ..
nāyaṃtritaścaturvedaḥ sarvāśī sarvavikrayī..146..
Even a brahmin who possesses only the Gāyatrī is superior, if well-restrained,
not one unrestrained though knowing the four Vedas, who eats anything and sells anything.
16.165.147
yasmādbhavatāṃ sāvitryā śāpo datto sade tviha..
atra dattaṃ hutaṃ cāpi sarvamakṣayakārakam..
datto varo mayā tena yuṣmākaṃ dvijasattamāḥ .. 147 ..
Because a curse was pronounced upon you here in the assembly by Sāvitrī,
whatever is given and offered into fire here shall become imperishable;
therefore has this boon been granted to you by me, O best of the twice-born.
16.165.148
agnihotraparā viprāstrikālaṃ homadāyinaḥ ..
svargaṃ te tu gamiṣyaṃti ekaviṃśatibhiḥ kulaiḥ .. 148 ..
The brahmins devoted to the agnihotra, offering oblations at the three junctures of the day,
will go to heaven along with twenty-one generations of their family.”
16.165.149
evaṃ śakre ca viṣṇau ca rudre vai pāvake tathā ..
brahmaṇo brahmaṇānāṃ ca gāyatrī sā varaṃ dadau ..
tasminkāle varaṃ dattvā brahmaṇaḥ pārśvagā'bhavat .. 149 ..
In this way Gāyatrī granted a boon to Śakra, Viṣṇu, Rudra, and Pāvaka,
and to Brahmā and the brahmins.
Having granted the boon at that time, she stood beside Brahmā.
16.165.150
hariṇā tu samākhyātaṃ lakṣmyāḥ śāpasya kāraṇam ..
yuvatīnāṃ ca sarvāsāṃ śāpastāsāṃ pṛthakpṛthak .. 7.1.165.150 ..
Then Hari explained the cause of Lakṣmī's curse,
and the individual curses of all the young women.
16.165.151
lakṣmyāstadā varaṃ prādādgāyatrī brahmaṇaḥ priyā .. 151 ..
Then Gāyatrī, the beloved of Brahmā, granted a boon to Lakṣmī:
16.165.152
akutsitāḥ sadā putri tava vāsena śobhane ..
bhaviṣyati na saṃdehaḥ sarvebhyaḥ prītidāyakāḥ .. 152 ..
“O daughter, O fair lady! By your presence, people will never be despised;
they will, without doubt, bring delight to everyone.
16.165.153
ye tvayā vīkṣitāḥ sarve sarve vai puṇyabhājanāḥ ..
teṣāṃ jātiḥ kulaṃ śīlaṃ dharmaścaiva varānane .. 153 ..
All those who are looked upon by you are vessels of merit.
Theirs will be high birth, lineage, virtuous conduct, and dharma, O fair-faced one.
16.165.154
parityaktāstvayā ye tu te narā duḥkhabhāginaḥ ..
sabhāyāṃ te na śobhante manyante na ca pārthivaiḥ .. 154 ..
Those men who are abandoned by you are partakers of sorrow;
they do not shine in an assembly, nor are they respected by kings.
16.165.155
āśiṣaścaiva teṣāṃ tu kurvate vai dvijottamāḥ ..
saujanyaṃ teṣu kurvanti naptā bhrātā pitā guruḥ .. 155 ..
To those [favoured by you], the best of the twice-born indeed give blessings;
grandson, brother, father, and teacher show benevolence toward them.
16.165.156
bāṃdhavo'si na saṃdeho na jīve'haṃ tvayā vinā ..
tvayi dṛṣṭe prasannā me dṛṣṭirbhavati śobhanā ..
manaḥ prasīdate'tyarthaṃ satyaṃsatyaṃ vadāmi te .. 156 ..
‘You are a kinsman, without a doubt; I cannot live without you.
When you are seen, my gaze becomes bright and cheerful;
my mind is exceedingly delighted’—I tell you this in absolute truth.
16.165.157
evaṃvidhāni vākyāni tvayā dṛṣṭyā nirīkṣite ..
sajjanāste vadiṣyanti janānāṃ prītidāyakāḥ .. 157 ..
Good people, bringing delight to men, will speak words of this kind
to the one looked upon by your glance.”
16.165.158
indrāṇi nahuṣaḥ prāpya svargaṃ tvāṃ yācayiṣyati ..
adṛṣṭvā tu hataḥ pāpo agastyavacanāddrutam.. 158 ..
O Indrāṇī, Nahuṣa, having attained heaven, will demand you. / But, not seeing [you], that wicked one will be destroyed swiftly by the word of Agastya.
16.165.159
sarpatvaṃ samanuprāpya prārthayiṣyati taṃ munim ..
darpeṇāhaṃ vinaṣṭo'smi śaraṇaṃ me mune bhava .. 159 ..
Reaching the state of a serpent, he will pray to that sage: / ‘I have been ruined by pride; O sage, become my refuge!’
16.165.160
vākyena tena tasyāsau nṛpasya bhagavānṛṣiḥ ..
kṛtvā manasi kāruṇyamidaṃ vacanamabravīt .. 7.1.165.160 ..
At that speech of that king, the venerable seer, / feeling compassion in his mind, spoke this word:
16.165.161
utpatsyati kule rājā tvadīye kurunaṃdana ..
sārpaṃ kalevaraṃ dṛṣṭvā praśnaistvāmuddhariṣyati .. 161 ..
‘A king will be born in your lineage, O delight of the Kurus; / seeing your serpentine body, he will deliver you with questions.
16.165.162
so'pyajagaratāṃ tyaktvā punaḥ svargaṃ gamiṣyati ..
aśvamedhe kṛte bhartrā saha yāsi punardivi ..
prāpsyase vara dānena mamānena sulocane .. 162 ..
He too, abandoning the state of a python, will go to heaven again. / When the horse sacrifice is performed, you will go again to heaven with your husband. / You will obtain [this] by this boon granted by me, O fair-eyed one.’
16.165.163
devapatnyastadā sarvāstuṣṭayā paribhāṣitāḥ ..
apatyairapi hīnāḥ syurnaiva duḥkhaṃ bhaviṣyati .. 163 ..
Then all the wives of the gods were addressed by her who was pleased: / ‘Even though devoid of offspring, there will be no sorrow for you at all.’
16.165.164
