brahmāśramapade vṛttāṃ pārśve himavataḥ śubhe ..
I shall tell you, O best among brahmins, an auspicious story
2.1.19.48
vakṣyāmi brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhā yuṣmākaṃ tu kathāṃ śubhām .. 22 ..
that took place at the Brahmāśrama hermitage, on an auspicious flank of the Himālaya.
2.1.19.49
tadāśramapadaṃ puṇyaṃ brahmāśramapadaṃ śubham..
That meritorious hermitage was the auspicious Brahmāśrama,
2.1.19.50
nānāvṛkṣasamākīrṇaṃ pārśve himavataḥ śubhe .. 23 ..
filled with various trees, on an auspicious flank of the Himālaya,
2.1.19.51
bahugulmalatākīrṇaṃ mṛgadvipaniṣevitam ..
abounding with many shrubs and creepers, frequented by deer and elephants,
2.1.19.52
siddhacāraṇasaṃghuṣṭaṃ ramyaṃ puṣpitakānanam .. .. 24 ..
resounding with siddhas and cāraṇas, a delightful forest in full bloom,
2.1.19.53
yatibhirbahubhiḥ kīrṇaṃ tāpasairupaśobhitam..
crowded with many ascetics, adorned with practitioners of tapas,
2.1.19.54
brāhmaṇaiśca mahābhāgaiḥ sūryajvalanasannibhaiḥ .. 25 ..
and by highly fortunate brahmins who resembled the sun and fire,
2.1.19.55
niyamavratasampannaiḥ samākīrṇe tapasvibhiḥ ..
teeming with ascetics endowed with restraints and observances,
2.1.19.56
dīkṣitairyāgaśīlaiśca yatāhāraiḥ kṛtātmabhiḥ ..26..
initiated, devoted to sacrifice, self-controlled in diet, and of perfected souls;
2.1.19.57
vedādhyayanasaṃpannairvaidikaiḥ pariveṣṭitam ..
surrounded by Vedic scholars accomplished in Vedic recitation,
2.1.19.58
varṇibhiśca gṛhasthaiśca vānaprasthaiśca bhikṣubhiḥ .. 27 ..
by students, householders, forest-dwellers, and mendicants,
2.1.19.59
svāśramācāranirataiḥ svavarṇoktavidhāyibhiḥ ..
devoted to the conduct of their own stage of life, performing what is prescribed for their own class,
2.1.19.60
vālakhilyaiśca ṛṣibhiḥ samaṃtātpariveṣṭitam ..28 ..
and surrounded on all sides by the Vālakhilya seers.
2.1.19.61
.. atha dṛḍhamatyākhyaśūdravṛttāntaḥ .. ..
Now the account of the śūdra named Dṛḍhamati.
2.1.19.62
tatrāśrame purā kaścicchūdro dṛḍhamatirdvijāḥ ..
In that hermitage long ago, O twice-born ones, a certain bold śūdra named Dṛḍhamati,
2.1.19.63
sāhasī brāhmaṇābhyāśamājagāma mudānvitaḥ .. 29 ..
joyful, came into the presence of the brahmins.
2.1.19.64
āgato hyāśramapadaṃ pūjitaśca tapasvibhiḥ ..
He arrived at the hermitage and was received hospitably by the ascetics.
2.1.19.65
nāmnā dṛḍhamatiḥ śūdraḥ sāṣṭāṃgaṃ praṇanāma vai .. 2.1.19.30 ..
A śūdra named Dṛḍhamati bowed down prostrate indeed.
2.1.19.66
tānsa dṛṣṭvā munigaṇāndevakalpānmahaujasaḥ ..
Seeing those hosts of sages, who resembled gods and possessed great splendour,
2.1.19.67
kurvato vividhānyajñānsaṃprāśahṛṣyata śūdrakaḥ .. 31 ..
performing various sacrifices, the śūdra rejoiced exceedingly.
2.1.19.68
athāsya buddhirabhavattapaḥ kartumanuttamam ..
Then the intention arose in him to perform peerless austerity.
2.1.19.69
tato'bravītkulapatiṃ munimāgatya tāpasam .. 32 .. ..
Then, approaching the sage who was the head of the hermitage and an ascetic, he said:
2.1.19.70
dṛḍhamatiruvāca.. ..
Dṛḍhamati said:
2.1.19.71
tapodhana namaste'stu rakṣa māṃ karuṇānidhe ..
“O rich in austerity, salutations to you! Protect me, O ocean of compassion!
2.1.19.72
tava prasādādicchāmi yāgaṃ kartuṃ prasīda me .. 33 ..
By your grace I desire to perform a sacrifice; be gracious to me.”
2.1.19.73
.. atha dṛḍhamatiṃ prati kulapatyākhyamunyupadiṣṭaśūdradharmāḥ .. ..
Now, the duties of a śūdra taught to Dṛḍhamati by the sage called the head of the hermitage.
2.1.19.74
evamuktastu śūdreṇa tamāha brāhmaṇastadā .. 34 ..
Thus addressed by the śūdra, the brahmin then said to him:
2.1.19.75
.. kulapatiruvāca .. ..
The head of the hermitage said:
2.1.19.76
yāge dīkṣayituṃ śakyo na śūdro hīnajanmabhāk ..
“A śūdra, born of low birth, cannot be initiated into a sacrifice.
2.1.19.77
bhūyate yadi te buddhiḥ śuśrūṣā nirato bhava .. 35 ..
If such an intention arises in you, become intent upon service.
2.1.19.78
upadeśo na kartavyo jātihīnasya karhicit ..
Instruction should never be given to one who is of low caste.
2.1.19.79
upadeśe mahāndoṣa upādhyāyasyavidyate .. 36 ..
In instructing [such a person], a great fault accrues to the teacher.
2.1.19.80
nādhyāpayedbudhaḥ śūdraṃ tathā naiva ca yājayet ..
A wise man should not teach a śūdra, nor should he officiate at a sacrifice for him.
2.1.19.81
na pāṭhayettathā śūdraṃ śāstraṃ vyākaraṇādikam .. 37 ..
Likewise, he should not make a śūdra study sacred treatises, grammar, and the like,
2.1.19.82
kāvyaṃ vā nāṭakaṃ vāpi tathālaṃkārameva vā ..
nor poetry, nor drama, nor indeed poetics.
2.1.19.83
purāṇamitihāsaṃ ca śūdraṃ naiva tu pāṭhayet .. 38 ..
He should never teach Purāṇa and epic to a śūdra.
2.1.19.84
yadi copadiśedvipraḥ śūdrasyaitāni karhicit ..
And if a brahmin should ever teach these to a śūdra,
2.1.19.85
tyajeyurbrāhmaṇā vipraṃ te grāmādbrahmasaṃkulāt .. 39 ..
the brahmins would expel that brahmin from a village filled with sacred knowledge.
2.1.19.86
śūdrāya copadeṣṭāraṃ dvijaṃ caṇḍālavattyajet..
And one should abandon like a caṇḍāla a twice-born man who instructs a śūdra;
2.1.19.87
śūdraṃ cākṣarasaṃyuktaṃ dūrataḥ parivarjayet .. 2.1.19.40 ..
and one should avoid from afar a śūdra endowed with literacy.
2.1.19.88
tacchuśrūṣasva bhadraṃ te brāhmaṇācchaddhayāsaha ..
Therefore, serve a brahmin with faith; good fortune to you!
2.1.19.89
śūdrasya dvijaśuśrūṣā manvādibhirudīritā .. 41 ..
Service to the twice-born is proclaimed for a śūdra by Manu and others.
2.1.19.90
na hi naisargikaṃ karma parityaktuṃ tvamarhasi ..
For you ought not to abandon the duty inherent to your nature.”
2.1.19.91
evamuktaḥ sa muninā sa śūdro'cintayattadā .. 42 ..
Thus addressed by the sage, that śūdra then reflected:
2.1.19.92
kiṃ kartavyaṃ mayā tvadya vrate śraddhā hi me parā ..
“What should be done by me now? For my faith in religious observances is supreme.
2.1.19.93
yathā syānmamasujñāna yatiṣye'haṃ tathādya vai .. 43 ..
I will strive today so that true knowledge may arise in me.”
2.1.19.94
iti niścitya manasā śūdro dṛḍhamatistadā ..
Having thus resolved in his mind, the śūdra Dṛḍhamati then,
2.1.19.95
gatvāśramapadādūraṃ kṛtavānuṭajaśubham.. 44 ..
going not far from the site of the hermitage, made a beautiful hut of leaves.
2.1.19.96
tatra vai devatāgāraṃ puṇyānyāyatanāni ca ..
There indeed, a shrine for deities and holy sanctuaries,
2.1.19.97
puṣpārāmādikaṃ cāpi taṭākakhananādikam .. 45..
flower-gardens and the like, as well as the digging of ponds and such,
2.1.19.98
śraddhayā kārayāmāsa tapaḥ siddhyarthamātmana ..
he caused to be made with faith, for the attainment of his own austerity.
2.1.19.99
abhiṣekāṃśca niyamānupavāsādikānapi .. 46 ..
Performing ritual baths, vows, and also fasts and the like,
2.1.19.100
baliṃ kṛtvā ca hutvā ca daivatānyabhyapūjayat ..
offering food and oblation, he worshipped the deities.
2.1.19.101
saṃkalpaniyamopetaḥ phalāhāro jiteṃdriyaḥ .. 47 ..
Endowed with firm resolves and observances, subsisting on fruit, with his senses conquered,
2.1.19.102
nityaṃ kandaiśca mūlaiśca puṣpairapi tathā phalaiḥ ..
constantly with bulbs, roots, flowers, and fruits,
2.1.19.103
atithīnpūjayāmāsa yathāvatsamupāgatān .. 48 ..
he duly honoured the guests who arrived.
2.1.19.104
evaṃ hi sumahānkālo vyaticakrāma tasya vai .. 49 ..
In this way indeed, a very long time passed for him.
2.1.19.105
.. atha dṛḍhamataye sumatyākhyavipraprakāśitakarmānuṣṭhānakramaḥ .. ..
Now, the procedure for performing rites disclosed to Dṛḍhamati by the brahmin named Sumati.
2.1.19.106
athāśramamagāttasya sumatirnāma nāmataḥ ..
Then to his hermitage came [a brahmin] named Sumati by name,
2.1.19.107
dvijo gargakulodbhūtaḥ satyavādī jiteṃdriyaḥ .. 2.1.19.50 ..
a twice-born man born in the lineage of Garga, truthful of speech, with senses mastered.
2.1.19.108
svāgatairmunimārādhya toṣayitvā phalādikaiḥ ..
Honouring the sage with welcoming words and pleasing him with fruits and the like,
2.1.19.109
kathayanvai kathāḥ puṇyāḥ kuśalaṃ paryapṛcchata .. 51 ..
telling sacred tales, [the śūdra] inquired after his welfare.
2.1.19.110
itthaṃ vipraḥ sa pādyādyairupacāraistu pūjitaḥ ..
Thus honoured by offerings such as water for washing feet,
2.1.19.111
āśīrbhirabhinandyainaṃ pratigṛhya ca satkriyām .. 52 ..
that brahmin, felicitating him with blessings and accepting his hospitality,
2.1.19.112
tamāpṛcchatprahṛṣṭātmā svāśramaṃ punarāyayau ..
took leave of him with a delighted heart and returned to his own hermitage.
2.1.19.113
evaṃ dinedine vipraḥ śūdre'sminpakṣapātavān .. 53 ..
Thus day by day, that brahmin, fond of this śūdra,
2.1.19.114
āgacchadāśramaṃ tasya draṣṭuṃ taṃ śūdrayonijam ..
came to his hermitage to see that person born of śūdra birth.
2.1.19.115
bahukālaṃ dvijasyābhūtsaṃsargaḥ śūdrayoninā .. 54 ..
For a long time there was association of the twice-born man with the one of śūdra birth.
2.1.19.116
snehasya vaśamāpannaḥ śūdroktaṃ nāticakrame ..
Having fallen under the power of affection, he did not transgress what the śūdra said.
2.1.19.117
athāgataṃ dvijaṃ śūdraḥ prāha snehavaśīkṛtam .. 55 ..
Then the śūdra said to the twice-born man who had arrived, brought under the sway of affection:
2.1.19.118
havyakavyavidhānaṃ me brūhi tvaṃ tu gururmataḥ ..
“Explain to me the injunction for offerings to gods and ancestors; for you are considered my guru.”
2.1.19.119
evamuktaḥ sa śūdreṇa sarvametadupādiśat ..56..
Thus addressed by the śūdra, he instructed [him] in all this.
2.1.19.120
kārayāmāsa śūdrasya pitṛkāryādikaṃ tadā ..
He then caused the rites for the ancestors and others to be performed for the śūdra.
2.1.19.121
pitṛkārye kṛte tena visṛṣṭaḥ sa dvijottamaḥ .. 57 ..
When the ancestor-rite was performed by him, that best of the twice-born was dismissed.
2.1.19.122
.. atha śūdrasya vaidikakarmopadeśena sumatyanubhūtadurgatiḥ .. ..
Now, the miserable state suffered by Sumati due to instructing a śūdra in Vedic rites.
2.1.19.123
atha dīrgheṇa kālena poṣitaḥ śūdrayoninā ..
Then, after a long time, having been sustained by the one of śūdra birth,
2.1.19.124
tyakto vipragaṇaiḥ so'yaṃ pañcatvamagamaddvijaḥ .. 58 ..
abandoned by the hosts of brahmins, that twice-born man met his death.
2.1.19.125
vaivasvatabhaṭairnītvā pātito narakeṣvapi ..
Led away by the soldiers of Yama, he was cast into the hells,
2.1.19.126
kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi kalpakoṭiśatāni ca .. 59 ..
for thousands of tens of millions of kalpas, and hundreds of tens of millions of kalpas.
2.1.19.127
bhuktvā krameṇa narakāṃstadante sthāvaro'bhavat ..
Having experienced the hells in turn, at the end of them he became an immovable thing.
2.1.19.128
gardabhastu tato jajñe viḍvarāhastataḥ param .. 2.1.19.60 ..
Then he was born as a donkey, and after that as a dung-eating hog.
2.1.19.129
jajñe'tha sārameyo'sau paścādvāyasatāṃ gataḥ ..
Then he was born as a dog, and afterwards he became a crow.
2.1.19.130
atha caṇḍālatāṃ prāpya śūdrayonimagāttataḥ .. 61 ..
Then, having become an outcaste, he thereafter entered the womb of a śūdra.
2.1.19.131
gatavānvaiśyatāṃ paścātkṣatriyastadanantaram ..
Afterwards he became a vaiśya, and immediately following that, a kṣatriya.
2.1.19.132
prabalairbādhyamāno'sau brāhmaṇo vai tadābhavat .. 62 ..
Being tormented by powerful adversaries, he then became a brahmin.
2.1.19.133
upanītaḥ sa pitrā tu varṣe garbhāṣṭame dvijaḥ ..
Invested with the sacred thread by his father in the eighth year from conception, that brahmin,
2.1.19.134
vartamānaḥ piturgehe svācārābhyāsatatparaḥ .. 63 ..
dwelling in his father's house and intent upon observing proper conduct,
2.1.19.135
gacchankadācidgahane gṛhīto brahmarakṣasā ..
while once walking in a dense forest, was seized by a brahmarākṣasa.
2.1.19.136
rudanbhramanskhalanmūḍhaḥ pralapanprahasannasau .. 64 ..
Weeping, wandering, stumbling, bewildered, babbling, laughing aloud,
2.1.19.137
śaśvaddhāheti ca vadanvaidikaṃ karma so'tyajat ..
and constantly crying, “Alas, alas!”, he abandoned Vedic rites.
2.1.19.138
dṛṣṭvā sutaṃ tathābhūtaṃ pitā duḥkhena pīḍitaḥ .. 65 ..
Seeing his son in such a state, the father, stricken with grief,
2.1.19.139
sutamādāya ca snehādagastyaṃ śaraṇaṃ yayau ..
took his son and, out of affection, went for refuge to Agastya,
2.1.19.140
suvarṇamukharītīre tapasyantaṃ śivāgrataḥ ..66..
who was performing austerity in the presence of Śiva on the bank of the Suvarṇamukharī.
2.1.19.141
bhaktyā muniṃ praṇamyāsau pitā tasya sutasya vai ..
Having bowed to the sage with devotion, the father of that son
2.1.19.142
tasmai nivedayāmāsa svaputrasya viceṣṭitam ..67..
reported to him his son's conduct.
2.1.19.143
.. athāgastyoktyā durgatyapanodanārthaṃ sumaterveṃkaṭādrigamanam .. ..
Now, the departure of Sumati to Mount Veṅkaṭa by the instruction of Agastya for the removal of misfortune:
2.1.19.144
abravīcca tadā vipraḥ kumbhajaṃ munipuṃgavam ..
Then the brahmin said to the pitcher-born eminent sage:
2.1.19.145
eṣa me tanayo brahmangṛhīto brahmarakṣasā ..68..
“O brahmin, this son of mine has been seized by a brahmarākṣasa.
2.1.19.146
sukhaṃ na labhate brahmanrakṣa taṃ karuṇādṛśā ..
He finds no peace, O brahmin; protect him with a compassionate glance!

Tell me a means to destroy his suffering, O pitcher-born one!
2.1.19.149

2.1.19.155
.. agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.1.19.156
pūrvajanmani te putro brāhmaṇo'yaṃ mahāmate ..
“In a previous life, O wise one, this son of yours was a brahmin.
2.1.19.157
sumatirnāma vipro'yaṃ matiṃ śūdrāya vai dadau .. 73 ..
A brahmin named Sumati, he indeed imparted instruction to a śūdra;

karmāṇi vaidikānyeṣa sarvāṇyupadideśa vai ..
he instructed him in all Vedic rites.
2.1.19.159
ato'yaṃ narakānbhuktvā kalpakoṭisahasrakam .. 74 ..
Therefore, having experienced the hells for a thousand tens of millions of kalpas,
2.1.19.160
jāto bhuvi tadanteṣu sthāvarādiṣu yoniṣu ..
at the end of them he was born on earth in the wombs of immovable things and others.

On the bank of the Suvarṇamukharī, frequented by hosts of seers,
2.1.19.167
vartate daivataiḥ sevyaḥ pāvano veṃkaṭācalaḥ .. 78 ..
there is the sacred Mount Veṅkaṭa, worthy of being resorted to by the gods.
2.1.19.168
tasyopari mahātīrthaṃ nāmnā pāpavināśanam..

Pure and concentrated, bathe your son in the Pāpavināśana sacred ford.
2.1.19.174
snānena tridinaṃ tatra bahmarakṣo vinaśyati ..
By bathing there for three days, the brahmarākṣasa will be destroyed;
2.1.19.175
naivopāyāntaraṃ tasya vināśe vidyate bhuvi .. 82 ..
on earth, no other means exists for its destruction.
2.1.19.176
tasmācchīghraṃ prayāhi tvaṃ veṃkaṭāhvayaparvatam ..

having bathed his son for three days preceded by a formal vow,
2.1.19.184
sasnau svayaṃ ca viprendraḥ pitā pāpavināśane .. 86 ..
the father, foremost among brahmins, also bathed himself in Pāpavināśana.
