having bowed to the god Varāhasvāmin to the south of the sacred ford,
2.1.26.146
veṃkaṭeśālayaṃ gatvā śrīnivāsaṃ kṛpānidhim.. 68 ..
having gone to the abode of Veṅkaṭeśa, to Śrīnivāsa, the treasure-house of compassion,
2.1.26.147
vedavedyaṃ viśālākṣaṃ devadevaṃ sanātanam ..
to the eternal God of gods, whose eyes are large, who is known through the Vedas,
2.1.26.148
natvā'gastyo mahābhāgo ghoṇatīrthaṃ tato yayau .. 69 ..
having bowed down, the greatly fortunate Agastya then went to Ghoṇatīrtha.
2.1.26.149
tatra snātvā tīrthavarye svaśiṣyai yogināṃ varaḥ ..
Having bathed there in that best of sacred fords with his disciples, the best of yogins,
2.1.26.150
pippaladrumacchāyāyāṃ śiṣyebhyo bhaktipūrvakam .. 2.1.26.70 ..
under the shade of the pippala tree, with devotion to his disciples,
2.1.26.151
ghoṇatīrthasya māhātmyaṃ brahmahatyāvināśakam ..
the māhātmya of Ghoṇatīrtha, which destroys the murder of a brahmin,
2.1.26.152
sarvamaṃgaladaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvasampatpradāyakam.. 71 ..
bestows all auspiciousness, is meritorious, and grants all prosperities,
2.1.26.153
uktavānyogināṃ śreṣṭho hyagastyo bhagavānṛṣiḥ .. 72 ..
the foremost among yogins, the blessed seer Agastya, proclaimed.
2.1.26.154
.. atha ghoṇatīrthe agastyadarśanena tumburupatnyā varṣābhūtva nivṛttiḥ .. ..
Now, at Ghoṇatīrtha, through the darśana of Agastya, the cessation of Tumburu's wife's state as a frog:
2.1.26.155
tadā śrutvā tu varṣābhūḥ pādayostasya yoginaḥ ..
Then, having heard [it], the female frog, at the feet of that yogin
2.1.26.156
patitvā jñānadīpena viditvā vaibhavaṃ muneḥ .. 73 ..
fell, having perceived the glory of the sage through the lamp of knowledge.
2.1.26.157
pūrvarūpaṃ samāsādya nārī rūpaṃ manoharam ..
Having attained her former form, the captivating form of a woman,
2.1.26.158
agastya yogināṃ śreṣṭha rakṣarakṣa dayānidhe .. 74 ..
"O Agastya, foremost of yogins, protect, protect, O ocean of mercy!
2.1.26.159
māṃ rakṣa dayayā brahmanpativākyavirodhinīm ..
Protect me with compassion, O brahmin, who opposed the words of her husband!"
2.1.26.160
ityuktvā taṃ vikṣālākṣī virarāma tataḥ param .. 75 ..
Having said this to him, the large-eyed woman then fell silent.
2.1.26.161
.. agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.1.26.162
kā tvaṃ suśroṇi bhadraṃ te bhekajanmapradāyakam ..
"Who are you, O fair-hipped lady? May there be auspiciousness to you. What sin in a previous birth
2.1.26.163
pāpaṃ pūrvabhave cāsīttadvadasva ca mā ciram ..76..
bestowed the birth of a frog? Tell that, and do not delay."
2.1.26.164
.. .. nāryuvāca .. ..
The woman said:
2.1.26.165
tumbururnāma gandharvaḥ sarvavidyāviśāradaḥ ..
"There is a gandharva named Tumburu, skilled in all fields of knowledge.
2.1.26.166
tasya bhāryāsmyahaṃ vipra hyagastya munisevita .. 77 ..
I am his wife, O brahmin, O Agastya, who are attended by sages!
2.1.26.167
bhartā me sarvadharmajñastumbururmunisattamaḥ ..
My husband knows all duties, Tumburu, the best of sages.
2.1.26.168
sarvadharmānmanojñā tvaṃ kuru nityaṃ mayā saha .. 78 ..
'Perform all lawful duties constantly together with me, O charming lady!'
2.1.26.169
pativākyaṃ tadā śrutvā paralokopakārakam ..
Hearing then that command of my husband, which was beneficial for the other world,
2.1.26.170
asahyaṃ vākyamatyugraṃ durgatipradameva hi .. 79 ..
an unbearable and extremely harsh statement, leading indeed to a bad destination,
2.1.26.171
mayā coktaṃ hi durbuddhyā he tāta munisattama .. 2.1.26.80 ..
was spoken by me through foolishness, O father, best of sages!"
2.1.26.172
.. athāgastyakathitapativratādharmāḥ ..
Now the duties of devoted wives spoken by Agastya:
2.1.26.173
.. agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.1.26.174
kuśāgrabuddhiste bhartā śaśāpa tvāṃ ruṣānvitaḥ ..
"Your husband of razor-sharp intellect cursed you, filled with anger.
2.1.26.175
evaṃ śāpo yukta eva pativākyavirodhinīm .. 81 ..
Thus, a curse was quite fitting for one opposing her husband's words.
2.1.26.176
pativākyamanādṛtya svecchayā vartate tu yā ..
She who, disregarding the words of her husband, acts according to her own will,
2.1.26.177
sā nārī niraye ghore patatyācandratārakam .. 82 ..
that woman falls into a dreadful hell as long as the moon and the stars endure.
2.1.26.178
na svātantryaṃ tu nārīṇāṃ nollaṃghyaṃ patibhāṣaṇam ..
Women have no independence; the speech of the husband must not be transgressed.
2.1.26.179
pātivratyena puṇyena patiśuśrūṣaṇena ca .. 83 ..
Through devotion to the husband, through merit, and through service to the husband,
2.1.26.180
striyo viṣṇupadaṃ yānti na cānyairapi suvrataiḥ ..
women go to the abode of Viṣṇu, and not even by other noble vows.
2.1.26.181
patirmātā patirviṣṇuḥ patirbrahmā patiḥ śivaḥ .. 84 ..
The husband is mother, the husband is Viṣṇu, the husband is Brahmā, the husband is Śiva,
2.1.26.182
patirguruḥ patistīrthamiti strīṇāṃ vidurbudhāḥ ..
the husband is teacher, the husband is the sacred ford—so the wise know for women.
2.1.26.183
pativākyamapākṛtya yā nārī sukṛtaiḥ paraiḥ .. 85 ..
Rejecting the husband's words, that woman who with other good deeds
2.1.26.184
sadaiva yujyate sāpi naiva śuddhā bhavetsakṛt ..
is always engaged, even she would never become pure at all."
2.1.26.185
patihīnā tu yā nārī gurubhirdharmavittamaiḥ .. 86 ..
Now, a woman who is without a husband, by [the instruction of] elders who know the highest duty,
2.1.26.186
sā kṛtajñā vidadhyāttu vrataṃ dharmaphalapradam ..
she, being grateful, may perform a vow that bestows the fruit of righteousness.
2.1.26.187
patinā preritā saiva patibuddhiparāyaṇā .. 87 ..
She who is directed by her husband, devoted to her husband's thought,
2.1.26.188
patipādābjatīrthena yā snātā sā haripriyā ..
who bathes in the sacred ford of her husband's lotus-feet, is dear to Hari;
2.1.26.189
sā snātā sarvatīrtheṣu gaṅgādiṣu na saṃśayaḥ .. 88 ..
she has bathed in all sacred fords, such as the Gaṅgā—of this there is no doubt.
2.1.26.190
tasmāttvatkṛtadoṣastu tvāmāyātīti tatphalam ..
Therefore, the fault committed by you came back to you, and as its fruit
2.1.26.191
bhuñjantyāste'tra śṛṇvantyā ghoṇatīrthasya vaibhavam .. 89 ..
was being experienced by you here while hearing the majesty of the Ghoṇatīrtha,
2.1.26.192
muktirāsīcchubhāṃgaṃ tannārīrūpaṃ punaryathā .. ..
liberation occurred, and that beautiful-limbed female form [was restored] as before.
2.1.26.193
tasmādghoṇasya tīrthasya tumbutīrthamitīha vai .. 2.1.26.90 ..
Therefore, the renown of the Ghoṇatīrtha in this world
2.1.26.194
loke prasiddhirabhavadaho tīrthasya vaibhavam .. 91 .. ..
came to be as 'Tumbutīrtha.' Oh, the majesty of the sacred ford!
2.1.26.195
atha ghoṇatīrthasnātṝṇāṃ nānāvidhaphalaprāptiḥ ..
Now, the attainment of various fruits by those who bathe in the Ghoṇatīrtha:
2.1.26.196
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
2.1.26.197
ghoṇatīrthe mahāpuṇye sarvapāpavināśini ..
In the most holy Ghoṇatīrtha, which destroys all sins,
2.1.26.198
snānti ye paurṇamāsyāṃ vai śaunakādyā mahaujasaḥ .. 92 ..
those who bathe on the full-moon day, O Śaunaka and others of great splendor—
2.1.26.199
teṣāṃ kratuphalaṃ puṇyaṃ tīrthāyutaphalaṃ bhavet ..
theirs is the holy fruit of a sacrifice, the fruit of ten thousand sacred fords.
2.1.26.200
kapilāgosahasraṃ tu yo dadāti dinedine .. 93 ..
He who gives a thousand tawny cows day after day,
