2.1.9.59
sthitaṃ ca garuḍeśānaṃ paścācchārṅgaṃ śaraṃ tathā ..28.. ..

Having thus seen Śrīnivāsa, Raṅgadāsa was filled with wonder,
2.1.9.62
asya devasya cārāmaṃ kariṣyāmītyacintayat .. 29 ..
and thought: “I will make a garden for this god.”
2.1.9.63
niścitya manasā sarvaṃ tarumūle'vasatsudhīḥ ..
Having resolved everything in his mind, the wise man lived at the foot of a tree,
2.1.9.64

providing day by day through the Vaikhānasa a food-offering for Viṣṇu.
2.1.9.65
śanaiśchittvā vanaṃ ghoraṃ vṛkṣāṃściccheda pārśvagān ..
Gradually clearing the thick forest, he cut down the adjacent trees,
2.1.9.66
āsthānaciñcāṃ devasya ramāyāścampakaṃ tarum ..31..
[sparing only] the tamarind tree of the god's assembly and the campaka tree of Ramā;
2.1.9.67
devājñapto varjayitvā tāvubhau devasevitau ..
commanded by the god, he left aside both of them, which were served by the god.
2.1.9.68
devasyaparito bhūmau śilākuḍyaṃ tadākarot ..32..
Then, all around the god, he built a stone wall upon the ground.
2.1.9.69
tatkuḍyasyaiva paritaḥ puṣpārāmāṃścakāra ha ..
All around that very wall, he planted flower gardens:
2.1.9.70
mallikākaravīrābjakundamaṃdāramālatīḥ ..33..
jasmine, oleander, lotus, kunda, mandāra, and mālatī;
2.1.9.71
tulasīcampakānāṃ tu vanānyeva cakāra ha ..
and he planted whole groves of tulasī and campaka.
2.1.9.72
khanitvā tatra kūpaṃ tu vardhayaṃstajjalairvanam .. 34 ..
Digging a well there, he nourished the grove with its water.
2.1.9.73
ārāmapuṣpāṇyādāya svayaṃ dāmānyathākarot ..
Taking the garden flowers, he himself fashioned garlands;
2.1.9.74
vicitrāṇi tadā baddhvā pūjakasya kare dadau .. 35 ..
having woven wondrous ones, he placed them in the hand of the priest.
2.1.9.75
ādāya pūjakastāni skandhe mūrdhni babandha ca ..
Taking them, the priest bound them on the shoulders and head
2.1.9.76
śrīnivāsasya devasya śrībhūmisahitasya ca .. 36 ..
of the god Śrīnivāsa and of Śrī and Bhūmi.
2.1.9.77
evaṃ devasya kaiṃkaryaṃ kurvaṃstasthāvudāradhīḥ ..
Thus performing service to the god, the noble-minded one remained.
2.1.9.78
tasyaivaṃ vartamānasya samāstvā saptatergatāḥ .. 37 ..
As he lived in this manner, seventy years passed.
2.1.9.79
kurvāṇe puṣpāvacayaṃ raṃgadāse mahātmani .. 38 ..
While the great-souled Raṅgadāsa was gathering flowers,
2.1.9.80
.. atha raṃgadāsasya gandharvakrīḍādarśanena bhagavatkaiṃkaryavismṛtiḥ .. ..
Now, the lapse of service to the Lord by Raṅgadāsa upon seeing the Gandharva's play:
2.1.9.81
ārāme sarasi snātuṃ gandharvaḥ kaścidāyayau ..
A certain Gandharva arrived to bathe in a pool within the garden,
2.1.9.82
gandharvarājakanyābhistaruṇībhiḥ samanvitaḥ .. 39 ..
accompanied by the youthful daughters of a Gandharva king.
2.1.9.83
jalakrīḍāṃ karoti sma divi sthāpya vimānakam..
Having moored his aerial chariot in the sky, he engaged in water-sports.
2.1.9.84
surūpābhiśca sahitaṃ krīḍantaṃ kamalākare .. 2.1.9.40 ..
As he frolicked in the lotus pool together with those beautiful women,
2.1.9.85
paśyañchrīraṃgadāso'yaṃ vyasmaranmālyasañcayam ..
this holy Raṅgadāsa, watching him, forgot his gathering of garlands.
2.1.9.86
jitendriyo'pi tatkakrīḍāṃ paśyanretaḥ sasarja ha .. 41 ..
Though his senses were subdued, watching their amorous play, he emitted semen.
2.1.9.87
paśyatastasya sarasaḥ samuttīrya manoharam ..
While he was watching, [the Gandharva] emerged from that charming pool,
2.1.9.88
divyavastrāṇi cācchādya kāntābhiḥ saha sasmitam .. .. 42 ..
and putting on heavenly clothes, smiling alongside his lovely women,
2.1.9.89
adhiruhya vimānaṃ tu yayau sa dhanadālayam ..
he mounted his aerial chariot and departed for the abode of Kubera.
2.1.9.90
gate gandharvarāje tu raṃgadāso vimohitaḥ .. 43 ..
When the king of Gandharvas was gone, bewildered Raṅgadāsa,
2.1.9.91
tyaktvā ca tāni mālyāni snātvā sarasi lajjitaḥ ..
abandoning those garlands and having bathed in the pool, was ashamed.
2.1.9.92
punarāhṛtya puṣpāṇi śanairdevālayaṃ yayau .. 44 ..
Gathering flowers once again, he slowly went to the temple.
2.1.9.93
vaikhānasastu taṃ dṛṣṭvā pūjākālamatītya ca ..
Seeing him arrive when the time of worship had already passed,
2.1.9.94
āgataṃ kimiti prāha sakhe'tikramya cāgataḥ .. 45 ..
the Vaikhānasa said: "Why have you arrived, my friend, when the time has lapsed?
2.1.9.95
na baddhā mālikāścāpi tvayā''rāme ca kiṃ kṛtam .. 46 ..
Nor have you strung the garlands. What did you do in the garden?"
2.1.9.96
.. śrīvarāhauvāca .. ..
The glorious Varāha said:
2.1.9.97
itthaṃ pṛṣṭo raṃgadāso nāvadallajjayā tataḥ ..
Questioned in this manner, Raṅgadāsa said nothing out of shame.
2.1.9.98
lajjitaṃ raṃgadāsaṃ taṃ provāca madhusūdanaḥ .. 47 ..
To that ashamed Raṅgadāsa, Madhusūdana spoke:
2.1.9.99
.. atha svarūpānusandhānena lajjitaṃ raṃgadāsaṃ prati śrīnivāsavacanam..
Now, the words of Śrīnivāsa to Raṅgadāsa, who was ashamed upon self-examination:
2.1.9.100
.. śrībhagavānuvāca .. ..
The Blessed Lord said:
2.1.9.101
lajjayā kiṃ raṃgadāsa mayā tvaṃ mohito hyasi ..
"Why are you ashamed, Raṅgadāsa? Indeed, you were deluded by Me.
2.1.9.102
tvaṃ tāvajjitakāmo'si dhīro bhava mahāmate .. 48 ..
You have truly conquered desire; be firm of mind, O high-minded one!
2.1.9.103
gandharvarājavadrājā bhavitāsi mahītale ..
Like that king of Gandharvas, you shall become a king upon the earth.
2.1.9.104
tatra bhuktvā mahābhogānbhaktimānmayi sarvadā .. 49 ..
There, having enjoyed great pleasures, ever full of devotion to Me,
2.1.9.105
prākāraṃ ca vimānaṃ ca kārayiṣyasi me tadā ..
you shall then cause an enclosure wall and an aerial chariot to be built for Me.
2.1.9.106
tatra muktiṃ pradāsyāmi prītyā paramayā yutaḥ .. 2.1.9.50 ..
There I will bestow liberation upon you, filled with supreme love.
2.1.9.107
atraiva kuru sevāṃ tvamāśarīravimokṣaṇāt ..
Render service right here until the release of your body.
2.1.9.108
madbhaktānāṃ sakāmānāmevaṃ muktirbhaviṣyati .. 51 ..
In this manner shall liberation come to My devotees who have desires."
2.1.9.109
ityuktvā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ punarnovāca kiṃcana ..
Having spoken thus, the Lord Viṣṇu said nothing further.
2.1.9.110
śrutvā tadraṃgadāso'pi cakārārāmamuttamam .. .. 52 ..
Hearing that, Raṅgadāsa also tended an excellent garden.
2.1.9.111
.. atha toṇḍamānnāmakanṛpavṛttāntaḥ .. ..
Now, the account of the king named Toṇḍamān:
2.1.9.112
sāgraṃ śatābdaṃ sevitvā gataḥ svargamamandadhīḥ ..
Having served for a full hundred years, the wise one went to heaven.
2.1.9.113
jātaḥ somakule tuṃge toṇḍamāniti viśrutaḥ .. 53 ..
He was born into the exalted Lunar dynasty, renowned as Toṇḍamān,
2.1.9.114
suvīratanayo vīro nandinīgarbhasaṃbhavaḥ ..
the heroic son of Suvīra, born from the womb of Nandinī.
2.1.9.115
sa paṃcavarṣādudbhūtaviṣṇubhaktiḥ svayaṃ sudhīḥ ..
From the age of five, devotion to Viṣṇu arose in that naturally wise prince,
2.1.9.116
sauśīlyaśauryavīryādiguṇānāmākaro mahān.. 54 ..
a great mine of virtues such as good character, valor, and strength.
2.1.9.117
pāṇḍyasya tanayāṃ padmāmupayeme manoharām ..
He married Padmā, the enchanting daughter of the Pāṇḍya king.
2.1.9.118
tato rājā śataṃ kanyā nānādeśyāḥ svayaṃvarāḥ .. 55 ..
Then the king [married] a hundred maidens from various lands through bridegroom-choice ceremonies.
2.1.9.119
reme deveṃdravadbhūmau nārāyaṇapure vasan..
Residing in Nārāyaṇapura, he sported upon the earth like Indra, lord of the gods.
2.1.9.120
anujñāṃ prāpya pitṛtaḥ putraḥ paṃcāsyavikramaḥ.. 56 ..
Having received permission from his father, the son, possessing the prowess of a lion,
2.1.9.121
uddiśya mṛgayāṃ vīro veṅkaṭādreḥ samīpataḥ .. 57 ..
set out on a hunt, that hero, near Mount Veṅkaṭa.
2.1.9.122
.. atha toṇḍamānnṛpasya mṛgayārthaṃ śrīśeṣācalagamanam .. ..
Now, King Toṇḍamān's journey to Śrī Śeṣācala for the hunt:
2.1.9.123
pādacāreṇa vicaranparivāraiḥ samanvitaḥ ..
Moving on foot accompanied by his retinue,
2.1.9.124
madadhārāṃ vimuṃcaṃtaṃ dadarśa gajayūthapam .. 58 ..
he saw the leader of a herd of elephants discharging streams of rut.
2.1.9.125
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vismito bhūtvā grahītuṃ tamanudrutaḥ ..
Filled with wonder at seeing it, he ran after it to capture it.
2.1.9.126
suvarṇamukharīṃ tīrtvā brahmāṣa śukamuttamam .. 59 ..
Crossing the Suvarṇamukharī river, [he saw] the excellent brāhmaṇa Śuka;
2.1.9.127
namaskṛtyābhyanujñātastato'gacchadvanādvanam ..
having bowed to him and received his permission, he went from forest to forest.
2.1.9.128
dadarśa reṇukāṃ devīṃ valmīkākārasaṃsthitām .. 2.1.9.60 ..
He saw the goddess Reṇukā abiding in the form of an anthill,
2.1.9.129
iṣṭadāmiṣṭabhaktānāṃ divyārāmanivāsinīm..
bestowing desired boons on beloved devotees, dwelling in a celestial garden,
2.1.9.130
parivāraiḥ sadopetāṃ pūjitāṃ tridaśairapi ..61 ..
ever attended by her retinue, and worshipped even by the thirty [gods].
2.1.9.131
toṇḍamānapi tāṃ natvā tataḥ paścānmukho yayau .. 62 ..
Toṇḍamān, too, bowed to her and then proceeded westwards.
2.1.9.132
.. atha śrīnivāsasamīpasthapaṃcavarṇaśukavṛttāṃtaḥ .. ..
Now, the account of the five-colored parrot near Śrīnivāsa:
2.1.9.133
paṃcavarṇaṃ śukaṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ jighṛkṣuranudrutaḥ ..
Seeing a five-colored parrot, he pursued it wishing to seize it.
2.1.9.134
sa vadañchrīnivāseti giriṃ śīghrataraṃ yayau .. 63 ..
Uttering "Śrīnivāsa!", it flew swiftly toward the mountain.
2.1.9.135
anudravansa rājāpi girirājaṃ samāruhat ..
Pursuing it, the king also ascended the king of mountains,
2.1.9.136
darīśca vividhāḥ paśyañchikharāṇi samaṃtataḥ.. .. 64 ..
observing various caves and peaks all around.
2.1.9.137
śukamanveṣamāṇo'sau śyāmākavanameyivān ..
Searching for the parrot, he entered a forest of wild rice.
2.1.9.138
tamadṛṣṭvā śukavaraṃ vanapālaṃ dadarśa ha .. 65 ..
Not seeing that excellent parrot, he beheld a forest guardian.
2.1.9.139
taṃ tu rājānamāyāṃtaṃ pratyudgacchansa satvaraḥ ..
Seeing the king approaching, he quickly went out to meet him.
2.1.9.140
praṇamya vinayopetaḥ kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ ..66..
having bowed down full of humility, he stood with folded hands.
2.1.9.141
toṇḍamānapi saṃpūjya taṃ papraccha vanecaram..
Toṇḍamān too honoured him and asked that forester:
2.1.9.142
paṃcavarṇaḥ śukaḥ kaściddṛṣṭaścātrāgatastvayā .. 67 ..
"Was a five-coloured parrot seen by you coming here?
2.1.9.143
śrīnivāseti ca vadankva gato'sau vanecara .. 68 ..
Saying 'Śrīnivāsa', where has it gone, O forester?"
2.1.9.144
.. vanecara uvāca .. ..
The forester said:
2.1.9.145
sa paṃcavarṇo rājeṃdra śrīnivāsapriyaḥ sadā ..
"That five-coloured [parrot], O lord of kings, is ever dear to Śrīnivāsa.
2.1.9.146
pārśvavartī sadā tasya śrībhūmibhyāṃ vivardhitaḥ .. 69 ..
Always staying by his side, he was reared by Śrī and Bhūmi.
2.1.9.147
svāmipuṣkariṇītīre sadāste devasannidhau ..
On the bank of Svāmipuṣkariṇī he ever stays in the god's presence.
2.1.9.148
grahītuṃ sa śukaḥ śrīmānna tu kenāpi śakyate .. 2.1.9.70 ..
Yet that glorious parrot cannot be caught by anyone.
2.1.9.149
vihṛtya svecchayā nityamasmingirivare śubhe ..
Having roamed at will constantly on this auspicious, foremost of mountains,
2.1.9.150
dināṃte devamāsādya tatsamīpe vasatyayam .. 71 ..
