As long as the completion of the thousand sacrifices takes place, O lord,
2.2.17.62
tāvattvaṃ tridaśaiḥ sārddhaṃ sadomadhyagato vasa .. 2.2.17.30 ..
so long dwell in the sacrificial enclosure along with the gods.

I desire to sacrifice, O lord of the gods, not out of longing for your position;
2.2.17.64
sarveṣāṃ vetsi deveśa manovṛttiṃ sadā prabho .. 31 ..
you know the mental disposition of all at all times, O lord of the gods.
2.2.17.65
yuṣmākaṃ pūrvadṛṣṭo'tra vapuṣmānmādhavaḥ prabhuḥ ..
Here lord Mādhava, endowed with form, was formerly seen by you in worship;
2.2.17.66
upāsanāyāṃ so'yaṃ yo vālukābhistirodadhe .. 32 ..
that very same one who concealed himself under the sands—
2.2.17.67
tasya bhūyaḥ prakāśārthaṃ vājimedhasahasrakam..
for the sake of revealing him once more, I shall perform a thousand horse sacrifices,
2.2.17.68
kariṣye vacanādiṃdra caturāsyasya śāsanāt ..
O Indra, by the instruction and command of the Four-faced One [Brahmā].
2.2.17.69
punaḥ prakāśite tasmiñchreyo vo'pi bhaviṣyati .. 33 ..
When he is revealed again, it will bring welfare to you as well."
2.2.17.70
iti vijñāpite rājñā maheṃdrapramukhāḥ surāḥ ..
When thus petitioned by the king, the gods headed by great Indra,
2.2.17.71
antarddhānotaraṃ yā ca śrutā pūrvaṃ sarasvatī .. 34 ..
remembering that bodiless voice that had been heard previously,
2.2.17.72
aśarīrāṃ smaraṃtastāmidaṃ procuḥ praharṣitāḥ ..
after the disappearance [of the Lord], spoke this, delighted:
2.2.17.73
indradyumna mahātmāsi satyaṃ satyavato bhuvi .. 35 ..
"Indradyumna, you are a great soul, truly among the truthful on earth!
2.2.17.74
tacceṣṭitaṃ purāsmābhiranvabhāvi bhaviṣyakam ..
That future act of yours was experienced by us in advance.
2.2.17.75
sahāyāste bhaviṣyāmaḥ kārye trailokyapāvane ..36..
We shall be your helpers in this undertaking that purifies the three worlds,
2.2.17.76
sraṣṭā sa jagatāṃ yatra udyuktaḥ svayameva hi ..
where the Creator of the worlds himself has indeed undertaken the effort.
2.2.17.77
atraivovāca bhagavānasmākamapi bhūtale .. 37 ..
Right here the Lord said even to us upon the earth:
2.2.17.78
praviśaṃstadanukrośavaśādbhūyaḥ prakāśanam ..
Entering out of compassion for them, I shall once more
2.2.17.79
kariṣye dāravaṃ dehamityetatpariniṣṭhitam .. 38 ..
make a wooden body; thus this has been resolved.
2.2.17.80
nātrāsmākaṃ vyalīkaṃ tu neṃdrasya ca mahīpate ..
There is no displeasure in this for us, nor for Indra, O king;
2.2.17.81
asmaddiṣṭasamudyogastava naḥ prītikārakaḥ .. 39 ..
your endeavor, destined by us, brings joy to us.
2.2.17.82
sukhaṃ yajasva rājeṃdra vaikuṃṭhaṃ bhaktavatsalam ..
Sacrifice with ease, O king of kings, to Vaikuṇṭha, who loves his devotees,
2.2.17.83
kratunā hayamedhena sahasraparivartinā .. 2.2.17.40 ..
by means of the horse sacrifice repeated a thousand times.
2.2.17.84
durārādhyo hi bhagavānasmākaṃ bhaktavatsalaḥ ..
For hard to propitiate is the Lord, yet affectionate to devotees, even for us.
2.2.17.85
vayamapyatra devatvaṃ tyaktvā bhakti parāyaṇāḥ .. 41 ..
We too, abandoning godhood here, devoted to devotion,
2.2.17.86
ārādhayāmaḥ kṣetresminvinītā nararūpiṇaḥ ..
shall worship, humble, in human form in this sacred field.
2.2.17.87
priyaṃ hi mānuṣe loke karma siddhyati vai kṛtam .. 42 ..
For dear indeed is an action performed in the mortal world, and it attains success.”
2.2.17.88
.. jaiminiruvāca .. ..
Jaimini said:
2.2.17.89
ityukte tridaśaiḥ seṃdraiḥ parituṣṭāṃtarātmanā ..
When this was spoken by the gods together with Indra, with his inner self deeply pleased,
2.2.17.90
āraṃbhārthaṃ krato rājā bhagavaṃtamapūjayat .. 43 ..
the king worshipped the Lord for the purpose of beginning the sacrifice
2.2.17.91
upacārasahasraistu yathāvatpratipāditaiḥ ..
with thousands of services presented according to rule.
2.2.17.92
tataḥ pitṛgaṇānrājā nirūpya śraddhayānvitaḥ .. 44 ..
Then the king, endowed with faith, having seen to the hosts of ancestors,
2.2.17.93
sadogṛhagatānviprānyājñikānsamalaṃkṛtān ..
and the well-adorned brahmins and sacrificers gathered in the sacrificial hall,
2.2.17.94
kṛtveṣṭadevaṃ purato vaikuṃṭhaṃ sāgnihotrakam .. 45 ..
having placed the chosen deity Vaikuṇṭha in front along with the sacrificial fires,
2.2.17.95
ākāṃkṣankalpitaṃ lagnaṃ saṃvṛtte svastivācane ..
awaiting the determined astrological moment when the chanting of auspiciousness had concluded,
2.2.17.96
upasthitaḥ sapatnīkaḥ śuddhamāṃgalyaveṣadhṛk .. 46 ..
stood present together with his wife, wearing pure and auspicious attire.
2.2.17.97

he, having gathered all the provisions, then selected the priests.

having separated the fires for the initiation sacrifice, sacrificed as prompted by the assembly members.
2.2.17.101
praṇīya taṃ prajvalaṃtaṃ vedyāmāhavanīyakam ..
Having brought forward that blazing Āhavanīya fire upon the altar—
2.2.17.102
trailokyamaṃgalakaraṃ kiṃ sākṣādvaiṣṇavaṃ mahaḥ .. 49 ..
was it the very splendour of Viṣṇu bringing auspiciousness to the three worlds?
2.2.17.103
suprokṣitaṃ cābhimaṃtrya anujñāpya digīśvarān ..
Having well sprinkled and consecrated [the horse] with mantras, having obtained leave from the guardians of the directions,

mumucuste hayaṃ mukhyamaṃgeṣu śubhalakṣaṇam .. 2.2.17.50 ..
they released the principal horse, marked with auspicious characteristics on its limbs.
