Faith in this does not arise in those with little merit.
2.2.38.51
vedācārapradhāneṣu yuge hyetatprakīrtitam .. 25 ..

2.2.38.52
mahimānaṃ na vedāsya viśeṣācchrūyatāṃ kalau ..
the Veda does not know its greatness, especially—hear this—in the Kali [age].
2.2.38.53
ghore kaliyuge tasmiṃstripādo dharmaviplavaḥ .. 26 ..

they never meditate, perform austerity, or keep vows.
2.2.38.58

they rejoice in censuring others, without doing anything virtuous of their own.
2.2.38.60
prasaṃgātkautukādvāpi nighnaṃti parakarma vai ..

they cling to reprehensible women of others, behaving like beasts.
2.2.38.64
agnihotrādikaṃ vāpi vrataṃ nānyatkvacitkvacit ..
The agnihotra and other rites, or other vows, are rarely found anywhere;
2.2.38.65
jīvikā taddvijātīnāṃ yeṣāṃ vā pāralaukikam..32..
it is merely a livelihood for the twice-born, or else [a rare act] for those concerned with the other world.
2.2.38.66
avratādhītavedena anyāyāptadhanena ca ..
By one who has studied the Vedas without observing vows, with wealth acquired unjustly,
2.2.38.67
vittaśāṭhyena ca kṛtaṃ na tathā phaladāyi tat .. 33 ..
and performed with deceitful miserliness, it does not yield fruit in that manner.
2.2.38.68
prāyaḥ kaliyuge bhūpāḥ prajāvanaparāṅmukhāḥ ..
In the Kaliyuga, kings are mostly averse to protecting their subjects,
2.2.38.69
karādānaparā nityaṃ pāpiṣṭhāścauryavṛttayaḥ .. 34 ..
always intent on levying taxes, exceedingly wicked, and thievish in conduct.
2.2.38.70
varṇasaṃkariṇaḥ sarve śūdraprāyāḥ kalau yuge ..
All are born of intermixed classes, almost like śūdras, in the Kali age;
2.2.38.71
hartāraḥ pārthivā eva śūdrāśca nṛpasevakāḥ .. 35 ..
the kings themselves are plunderers, and śūdras are the king’s ministers.
2.2.38.72
śrautasmārtādikaṃ karma na tathā sadanuṣṭhitam ..
Vedic and traditional rituals are not properly observed in that way
2.2.38.73
yuge caturthe bho viprāḥ paralokāya kalpite .. 36 ..
in the fourth age, O brahmins, which was intended for the other world.
2.2.38.74
dānadharmaḥ paro hyeṣa nānyo dharmaḥ praśasyate ..
Indeed, this duty of giving is supreme; no other duty is praised.
2.2.38.75
karmaṇā manasā vācā hitamiccheddvijanmanām .. 37 ..
By deed, mind, and speech, one should desire the welfare of the twice-born.
2.2.38.76
iti hovāca bhagavānbrāhmaṇo māmakī tanuḥ ..
For thus spoke the Lord: 'The brahmin is my body;
2.2.38.77
brāhmaṇā yasya saṃtuṣṭāḥ santuṣṭastasya cāpyaham .. 38 ..
with whomsoever the brahmins are pleased, with him am I also pleased.
2.2.38.78
ubhayatra samo bhūyādbrāhmaṇe ca janārdane ..
One should regard both alike: the brahmin and Janārdana.
2.2.38.79
yadvadaṃti dvijā vākyaṃ tatsvayaṃ bhagavānvadet .. 39 ..
Whatever word the twice-born speak, the Lord himself speaks that.'
2.2.38.80
yathātathā vartamāno varṇānāṃ brāhmaṇo guruḥ ..
In whatever manner he conducts himself, the brahmin is the guru of the castes;
2.2.38.81
bhagavānapi deveśaḥ sa sākṣādbrāhmaṇapriyaḥ .. 2.2.38.40 ..
even the Lord, ruler of the gods, is visibly fond of brahmins.
2.2.38.82
sadāvatāraṃ kurute brāhmaṇārthaṃ janārdanaḥ ..
Janārdana always manifests an incarnation for the sake of brahmins;
2.2.38.83
tatpālanārthaṃ duṣṭānvai nigṛhṇāti yuge yuge .. 41 ..
for their protection he surely restrains the wicked age after age.
2.2.38.84
sasarja brāhmaṇānagre sṛṣṭyādau sa caturmukhaḥ ..
The Four-faced [Brahmā] created brahmins first, at the beginning of creation;
2.2.38.85
sarve varṇāḥ pṛthakpaścātteṣāṃ vaṃśeṣu jajñire .. 42 ..
afterward, all the other castes were born separately in their lineages.
2.2.38.86
tasmātkaliyuge tasminbrāhmaṇo viṣṇureva ca ..
Therefore in that Kali age the brahmin and Viṣṇu indeed—
2.2.38.87
ubhau gatiśca sarveṣāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ harirgatiḥ .. 43 ..
both are the refuge of all; and Hari is the refuge of brahmins.
2.2.38.88
harirevātra sarveṣāṃ gatiḥ prāpte kalau yuge ..
Hari alone is the refuge of all here once the Kali age has arrived;
2.2.38.89
śālagrāmādike kṣetre smaryate kīrtyate'pi ca .. .. 44 ..
in sacred fields such as Śālagrāma he is remembered and also praised.
2.2.38.90
tasminnīlācale puṇye kṣetre kṣetrajñavarṣmaṇi ..
In that holy sacred field, Nīlācala, which has the body of the Knower of the Field,
2.2.38.91
jīvabhūtaḥ sa sarveṣāṃ dāruvyājaśarīrabhṛt .. 45 ..
he exists as the life-breath of all, bearing a body under the guise of wood.
2.2.38.92
kalikalmaṣanāśāya prāyo duṣkṛtakarmaṇām ..
To destroy the taint of the Kali age mostly for those who have committed evil deeds,
2.2.38.93
darśanastavanocchiṣṭabhojanairmuktidāyakaḥ .. 46 ..
he grants liberation through darśana, praise, and the eating of his food offerings.
2.2.38.94
ucchiṣṭena sureśasya vyāptaṃ yasya kalevaram ..
He whose body is suffused with the remnant of the Lord of the gods,
2.2.38.95
tadāhārastadātmā hi lipyate na sa pātakaiḥ .. 47 ..
having that as food and having that as self, is never stained by sins.
2.2.38.96
nivedanīyamanyāsu mūrtiṣvīśasya vartate ..
In other images of the Lord, an offering is made;
2.2.38.97
pāvanaṃ tadapi proktamucchiṣṭaṃ tu vimocakam .. 48 ..
even that is declared purifying, but [here] the remnant is liberating.
2.2.38.98
bhuṃkte tvatraiva bhagavānpaśyatyanyatra cakṣuṣā ..
Here alone the Lord actually eats; elsewhere he beholds with his eye.
2.2.38.99
purāyaṃ prārthito devo yogibhiḥ pariveṣṭitaiḥ .. 49 ..
Formerly, this god was petitioned by surrounding yogins:
2.2.38.100
nirmālyocchiṣṭabhogena tava māyāṃ jayemahi ..
'Through enjoying your flower offerings and remnants may we conquer your māyā!'
2.2.38.101
atyaṃtastimitākṣāṇāmanāyāsena muktidaḥ .. 2.2.38.50 ..
He gives liberation effortlessly to those whose eyes are completely fixed [in meditation].
2.2.38.102
śayanāsanabhogādyai ramate ca śriyā saha ..
He takes delight with Śrī through lying down, sitting, eating, and the like;
2.2.38.103
atra ceṣṭā bhagavato vedārtha iti dhāryatām .. 51 ..
let it be held that the activity of the Lord here is the meaning of the Veda.
2.2.38.104
samatikrāṃtavedo hi na kadācitpravartate ..
For he never acts transgressing the Veda;
2.2.38.105
vedarakṣārthamevāsya saṃbhavo hi yuge yuge .. 52 ..
his descent age after age is indeed for the purpose of protecting the Veda.
2.2.38.106
pramāṇabhūto bhagavānviruddhaṃ kathamācaret ..
The Lord being an authority, how could he act contrarily?
2.2.38.107
tasminviruddhaṃ carati jagadeva tathā bhavet .. 53 ..
If he were to act contrarily, the entire world would become likewise.
2.2.38.108
ācāreṇa hi vedārtho niyato dhāmatāṃ gataḥ ..
For by proper conduct the meaning of the Veda is fixed and has attained its station.
2.2.38.109
madhyadeśabhavaḥ pūrvamatrāgacchaddvijottamaḥ .. 54 ..
Formerly, an excellent brahmin born in Madhyadeśa came here,
2.2.38.110
śiṣṭācāraiḥ suvimalaḥ śāstrārthapariniṣṭhitaḥ ..
exceptionally pure through orthodox conduct, thoroughly versed in the meaning of the scriptures,
2.2.38.111
sadā śāṃtaḥ sadā dāṃtaḥ kāyavāṅmanasairgṛhī .. 55 ..
always calm, always restrained in body, speech, and mind, a householder.
2.2.38.112
sa tīrthavidhinā devaṃ samabhyarcya ca sāgnikaḥ ..
Having worshipped the god according to the rule of the sacred ford, maintaining his sacred fire,
2.2.38.113
trirātramatroṣitavānviṣṇvarcanaparaḥ śuciḥ .. .. 56 ..
he stayed here for three nights, devoted to the worship of Viṣṇu, pure.
2.2.38.114
yajñaśeṣaṃ gṛhasthānāṃ bhoktavyamiti śāstrataḥ ..
[Thinking,] 'According to scripture, householders must eat the remainder of sacrifice,'
2.2.38.115
devocchiṣṭaṃ na jagrāha anyapākābhiśaṃkayā .. 57 ..
he did not accept the god's remnant out of suspicion of another's cooking:
2.2.38.116
daivatairatra saṃskāryo devayogyaḥ kathaṃ bhavet ..
'How can that which is to be prepared by deities here become fit for God?
2.2.38.117
ayogyatvācca naivedyamagrāhyaṃ ca bhaveddhruvam ..58..
And because of unfitness, the food offering must surely not be accepted.'
2.2.38.118
agṛhīte ca naivedye śrotriyeṇa tadā dvijāḥ ..
And when the food offering was not accepted by that learned brahmin, O brahmins,
2.2.38.119
sarve ca tasyānucarā nābhuṃjaṃta niveditam .. .. 59 ..
all his attendants also did not eat what had been offered.
2.2.38.120
tataḥ sa vyādhisaṃmagno vihvalībhūtavigrahaḥ ..
Then, overwhelmed by disease, with his body trembling,
2.2.38.121
sakuṭuṃbo'bhavanmūko bhagavaddrohasaṃyutaḥ .. 2.2.38.60 ..
he along with his family became mute, afflicted by offense against the Lord.
2.2.38.122
manasā cintayatyevaṃ nirnimittaṃ kathaṃ nu me ..
He reflected thus in his mind: 'How indeed without cause has there been for me,
2.2.38.123
kuṭumbasahitasyābhūtpīḍā sarvāṃgabhaṃjinī .. 61 ..
along with my family, an affliction breaking every limb?'
2.2.38.124
evaṃ cintayamānasya trirātrāṃte'bhavanmatiḥ ..
As he was thinking thus, at the end of three nights the thought occurred:
2.2.38.125
nedṛśī vyādhipīḍā ca sarveṣāmekadā bhavet .. .. 62 ..
'Such affliction of disease would not happen to all at once!
2.2.38.126
ko vā drohaḥ kṛto'smābhiretasminpuruṣottame ..
What offense has been committed by us against this Puruṣottama?
2.2.38.127
na buddhipūrvakaḥ kiṃ syāttato me vyādhikāraṇam .. 63 ..
Could there be an unwitting [fault] that is the cause of disease for me?'
2.2.38.128
muhuritthaṃ cintayitvā dadhyau nārāyaṇaṃ prabhum ..
Having reflected thus repeatedly, he meditated on Lord Nārāyaṇa.
2.2.38.129
dhyānāvasāne tuṣṭāva śāstratattvārthadarśakaḥ .. 64 ..
At the conclusion of his meditation, he, who revealed the true meaning of the scriptures, offered praise:
2.2.38.130
.. śāṃḍilya uvāca .. ..
Śāṇḍilya said:
2.2.38.131
caturdaśāpi yā vidyā dharmanirṇayahetavaḥ ..
'Even the fourteen branches of learning, which are the means for determining dharma,
2.2.38.132
tāḥ sarvāstava vākyāni mukhapadmavinirgatāḥ .. 65 ..
are all your words, issued from your lotus mouth.
2.2.38.133
tābhirevācareddharmamiti śāstrārthaniścayaḥ ..
One should practice dharma only through them—such is the conclusion of the scriptures.
2.2.38.134
tasya dharmasya rakṣārthamavatāro yuge yuge .. 66 ..
Incarnation after incarnation is indeed for the purpose of protecting that dharma.
2.2.38.135
tamullaṃghya varttamāno bhavaddrohakaro dhruvam ..
He who lives transgressing it is surely one who commits an offense against you.
2.2.38.136
ahaṃ te devadeveśa karmaṇā manasā girā .. 67 ..
I, O Lord of the gods of gods, in deed, mind, and speech,
2.2.38.137
dharmaśāstramatikramya na vartte'pyarthakāmayoḥ ..
do not act by transgressing the Dharmaśāstra even for wealth and desire.
2.2.38.138
aneka janmasāhasraiḥ saṃcitaṃ pāpasaṃcayam .. 68 ..
The heap of sin accumulated through many thousands of births,
2.2.38.139
dagdhumatrāgato deva tvaddarśanadavāgninā ..
I have come here to burn, O Lord, with the forest-fire of your darśana.
2.2.38.140
ko'parādhaḥ kṛto deva tvacchāstrapathi vartinā ..
What offense was committed, O Lord, by one following the path of your scriptures,
2.2.38.141
sarvāṃgaṃ vādhate yasmādugro vyādhirahetukaḥ .. 69 ..
that a fierce disease torments all my limbs without cause?
2.2.38.142
jñānato'jñānato vāpi tvatpādasarasīruhe ..
Knowingly or unknowingly, at your lotus feet,
2.2.38.143
kṛto'parādho yo deva taṃ kṣamasva kṛpāṃbudhe ..
whatever offense was committed, O Lord, forgive it, O ocean of mercy.
2.2.38.144
bhūmau skhalitapādānāṃ bhūmirevāvalaṃbanam .. 2.2.38.70 ..
For those whose feet slip on the ground, the ground itself is the support.
2.2.38.145
tvayi jātāparādhānāṃ tvameva śaraṇaṃ prabho ..
For those who have committed offenses against you, you alone are the refuge, O Lord.
2.2.38.146
tavāparādhajaṃ pāpaṃ tvameva ca kṣamasva me .. 71 ..
And do you yourself forgive my sin born of an offense toward you.
2.2.38.147
vahnisaṃtāpato naśyedvahnisaṃtāpajo vraṇa ..
A burn born of the intense heat of fire is cured by the heat of fire;
