Having spent the night resting in the back of the chariot, filled with haste,
2.2.7.149
mahānadīṃ samuttīrya prātaḥkṛtyaṃ samāpya saḥ .. 72 ..
he crossed the Mahānadī and, having completed his morning duties,
2.2.7.150
ciṃtayanneva goviṃdaṃ pratasthe rathamāsthitaḥ ..
he set out, mounted on the chariot, still meditating on Govinda,
2.2.7.151
paśyanbhagavato mārgaṃ śrotriyāṇāṃ hi yajvanām .. 73 ..
beholding the road of the Blessed One, and the villages of Vedic scholars, sacrificers,
2.2.7.152
vahnivarcasvināṃ viprā grāmānpūgairalaṃkṛtān ..
and brahmins resplendent with the splendour of fire, adorned with betel nut trees.
2.2.7.153
vilaṃghyaikāmrakavanaṃ yāvadāyāti sa dvijaḥ .. 74 ..
As soon as that brahmin arrived, having crossed the forest of Ekāmraka,
2.2.7.154
śaṃkhacakragadāpadmadhāriṇo dadṛśe janān ..
he saw people bearing the conch, discus, mace, and lotus;
2.2.7.155
janmāṃtaritamātmānaṃ bubudhe divyarūpiṇam .. 75 ..
and he perceived himself transformed, having assumed a divine form as if in another birth.
2.2.7.156
avaruhya rathāttūrṇaṃ sāṣṭāṃgaṃ praṇipatya ca ..
Quickly descending from the chariot and prostrating with eight limbs,
2.2.7.157
harṣāśrupūrṇanayano nānyatkiṃcidapaśyata .. 76 ..
his eyes filled with tears of joy, he saw nothing else.
2.2.7.158
kevalaṃ manasā viṣṇuṃ paśyanbāhye ca bho dvijāḥ ..
Beholding Viṣṇu solely in his mind and outwardly as well, O brahmins,
2.2.7.159
evaṃ vrajanyadā vipro dhyāyanpaśyanstuvanharim .. 77 ..
as the brahmin was thus proceeding, meditating, seeing, and praising Hari,
2.2.7.160
apaśyatkānanākīrṇaṃ kalpanyagrodhabhūṣitam ..
he beheld the Nīlācala, crowded with forests, adorned with the wish-fulfilling banyan tree,
2.2.7.161
nīlācalaṃ likhaṃtaṃ khaṃ paśyatāṃ pāpanāśanam .. 78 ..
scraping the sky, destroying the sins of those who gaze upon it.
2.2.7.162
atyadbhutaṃ nivasaṃti sākṣāttanubhṛto hareḥ..
Most wonderful! Living beings directly endowed with the forms of Hari dwell there.
2.2.7.163
upatyakāyāmārūḍhaḥ samaṃtānmārgayandvijaḥ..79..
Having ascended to the foot of the hill, searching all around, the brahmin,
2.2.7.164
mārgaṃ na lebhe vipro'sau mukuṃdālokanotsukaḥ..
eager to behold Mukunda, did not find the path.
2.2.7.165
asupyata tato bhūmau kuśānāstīrya vāgyataḥ..2.2.7.80..
Then, having spread kuśa grass upon the ground, he lay down in silence;
2.2.7.166
darśane tasya devasya tameva śaraṇaṃ yayau..
for the darśana of that God, he took refuge in Him alone.
2.2.7.167
tataḥ śuśrāva vacanaṃ gireḥ paścādamānuṣam..81..
Then from behind the mountain he heard a superhuman voice,
2.2.7.168
bhagavadbhaktiviṣayaṃ saṃlāpaṃ kurvatāṃ mithaḥ..
as people conversed with one another on the subject of devotion to the Blessed One.
2.2.7.169
tato vidyāpatirhṛṣṭo'nusaraṃstaṃ jagāma vai..82..
Then Vidyāpati, overjoyed, followed it and went on.
2.2.7.170
dadarśa śabarāgārairveṣṭitaṃ parito dvijāḥ..
O brahmins, he saw [the place] surrounded on all sides by the dwellings of the Śabaras,
2.2.7.171
kṣetrasya dīpasaṃsthānaṃ khyātaṃ śabaradīpakam..83..
an island settlement of the sacred field, renowned as Śabaradīpaka.
2.2.7.172
tatra gatvā śanairvipraḥ praviśya vinayānvitaḥ..
Going there slowly, the brahmin entered, filled with humility,
2.2.7.173
dadarśa viṣṇubhaktāṃstāñchaṃkhacakragadādharān..84..
and saw those devotees of Viṣṇu bearing the conch, discus, and mace.
2.2.7.174
praṇamya śirasā viprastasthau baddhāṃjalistadā ..
Bowing his head, the brahmin then stood with folded hands.
2.2.7.175
tatoviśvāvasurnāma śabaraḥ palitāṃgakaḥ .. 85 ..
Then a Śabara named Viśvāvasu, his limbs grey with age,
2.2.7.176
avasāya hareḥ pūjāṃ pūjāśeṣopaśobhitaḥ ..
having completed the worship of Hari, adorned with the remnants of the worship,
2.2.7.177
saṃprāpto girimadhyāttu tasminneva kṣaṇe dvijāḥ..86..
arrived at that very moment from the midst of the mountain, O brahmins.
2.2.7.178
ālokya taṃ dvijo harṣamupayāto vyaciṃtayat..
Seeing him, the brahmin felt joy and reflected:
2.2.7.179
eṣa prāpto hareḥ sthānācchrāṃto nirmālyabhūṣitaḥ..87..
“This man has come from the abode of Hari, weary, adorned with the nirmālya.
2.2.7.180
vaiṣṇavāgrya ito vārtāṃ viṣṇoḥ prāpsyāmi durlabhām..
From this foremost Vaiṣṇava I shall obtain the rare news of Viṣṇu.”
2.2.7.181
ciṃtayanneva vipro'sau śabareṇābhyabhāṣata..88..
Even as he was reflecting thus, the brahmin was addressed by the Śabara.
2.2.7.182
..śabara uvāca..
The Śabara said:
2.2.7.183
kutaḥ samāgato vipra kānanāṃtaṃ sudustaram..
“From where have you come, O brahmin, to the depths of this forest, so hard to traverse?
2.2.7.184
kṣuttṛḍbhiratiśrāṃtaśca sukhamatrāsyatāṃ ciram..89..
You are utterly exhausted with hunger and thirst; please sit comfortably here for a while.”
2.2.7.185
pādyamāsanamarghaṃ ca dattvā viśvāvasurdvijam..
Offering water for the feet, a seat, and the respectful arghya offering to the brahmin,
2.2.7.186
uvāca praśrayagirā prastutaṃ pratipādayan.. 2.2.7.90 ..
Viśvāvasu spoke in a humble voice, introducing the matter at hand:
2.2.7.187
phalaiḥ pākena vā vipra prāṇayātrā bhavettava ..
“O brahmin, let your sustenance be with fruits or with cooked food.
2.2.7.188
yattubhyaṃ rocate tadvai dīyate'tra mayā dvija .. 91 ..
Whatever pleases you, O twice-born, will surely be given here by me.
2.2.7.189
bhāgyaṃ mamādya bhagavañjīvitaṃ saphalaṃ ca me ..
Today is my good fortune, O venerable one, and my life has become fruitful,
2.2.7.190
prāpto'si madgṛhaṃ vipra sākṣādviṣṇurivāparaḥ .. 92 ..
since you have reached my house, O brahmin, like another Viṣṇu in person!”
2.2.7.191
iti bruvāṇaṃ śabaraṃ provāca dvijapuṃgavaḥ ..
To the Śabara who spoke thus, the best of brahmins replied:
2.2.7.192
na me phalairna pākena kāryaṃ vaiṣṇavapuṃgava .. 93 ..
“I have no need of fruits or of cooked food, O best of Vaiṣṇavas!
2.2.7.193
yadarthamāgataṃ dūrātsādho tatsaphalaṃ kuru ..
Make fruitful, O virtuous one, the purpose for which I have come from afar.
2.2.7.194
indradyumnasya nṛpateravaṃtipuravāsinaḥ .. 94 ..
Of King Indradyumna, who resides in the city of Avantī,
2.2.7.195
purohito'haṃ saṃprāpto viṣṇordarśanalālasaḥ ..
I am the domestic priest; I have come longing for the darśana of Viṣṇu.
2.2.7.196
rājñāgre tairthikānāṃ hi samājāvasare śrutam .. 95 ..
Indeed, in the presence of the king, on the occasion of an assembly of pilgrims,
2.2.7.197
tīrthakṣetraprasaṃgena kenacitprastutaṃ tadā ..
it was introduced then by someone in the context of sacred fords and sacred fields.
2.2.7.198
tathā niveditaṃ kṣetraṃ rājāgre jaṭilena vai .. 96 ..
Thus the sacred field was described before the king by an ascetic with matted hair.
2.2.7.199
ānupūrvyācca tatsarvaṃ kathayāmāsa sa dvijaḥ ..
And that brahmin related all of it in proper succession.
2.2.7.200
etadarthamahaṃ sādho rājñā cotkaṇṭhitena vai .. 97 ..
For this purpose, O virtuous one, by the eager king indeed,
