2.5.12.1
.. devaśarmovāca .. .. ..
Devaśarman said:
2.5.12.2
tavedṛśī matirjātā sahasā keśavopari ..
“Such an inclination of mind has arisen in you suddenly toward Keśava,
2.5.12.3
etasmānme gataṃ pāpaṃ pūrvajanmaśatodbhavam .. 1 ..
because of which my own sin, arisen from a hundred past lives, has departed.
2.5.12.4
vinā vratairvinā tīrthairmuktastvaṃ pāpakoṭibhiḥ ..
Without vows, without sacred fords, you are freed from crores of sins.
2.5.12.5
mamātithyena bhaktyā ca jātaṃ tava hareḥ padam .. 2 ..
Through hospitality to me and through devotion, the abode of Hari is attained by you.
2.5.12.6
tena puṇyaprabhāveṇa matirjātā tavedṛśī ..
By the power of that merit, such a thought has arisen in you.
2.5.12.7
dhyātvā saṃciṃtya manasā jñātaṃ pūrvaviceṣṭitam .. 3..
Having meditated and reflected within my mind, your past deeds are known to me.
2.5.12.8
pūrvajanmani viprastvamavaṃtyāṃ dharmatatparaḥ ..
In your previous birth you were a brahmin in Avantī, devoted to righteousness,
2.5.12.9
sadā'dhyayanaśīlaśca suśīlaśca sadā vratī .. 4 ..
ever inclined to sacred study, virtuous, and always observing vows.
2.5.12.10
ekā tu dvādaśī viṣṇoḥ kṛtā ca daśamīyutā ..
Yet one Dvādaśī dedicated to Viṣṇu was observed [by you] overlapping with a Daśamī.
2.5.12.11
tatpāpasya prabhāveṇa samastaṃ sukṛtaṃ gatam .. 5 ..
By the effect of that sin, all your accumulated merit was lost.
2.5.12.12
sarvaṃ tadviphalaṃ jātaṃ yathā śūdrāpatirdvijaḥ ..
All of it became fruitless, just like a twice-born man married to a śūdra woman.
2.5.12.13
bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi prāptā narakayātanāḥ.. 6 ..
Torments of hell were suffered by you for many thousands of years.
2.5.12.14
tasmādevaṃ tvayā pūrvaṃ kṛtaṃ duṣṭaṃ ciraṃ bahu ..
Because in this manner that wicked deed was performed by you formerly for a long time,
2.5.12.15
kṛtā tu daśamīmiśrā tithirviṣṇormahātmanaḥ .. 7 ..
namely that the lunar day of high-souled Viṣṇu was observed mixed with a Daśamī,
2.5.12.16
tena śūdro bhavāñjātaḥ pāpe tava matistathā ..
thereby you became a śūdra, and your mind was likewise bent on sin;
2.5.12.17
dharme na ramate cittaṃ daśamīvedhadūṣitam.. 8 ..
your heart, corrupted by the overlap with the Daśamī, took no delight in righteousness.
2.5.12.18
vidarbhanagare vatsa asti te putrikāsutaḥ ..
O child, in the city of Vidarbha you have a daughter's son.
2.5.12.19
kṛtaṃ tena vidhānoktaṃ harerekādaśīvratam .. 9 ..
The vow of Hari’s Ekādaśī was observed by him according to prescribed rules.
2.5.12.20
pradattaṃ tena tatpuṇyamakhaṇḍaikāśīvratam..
The merit of that unbroken Ekādaśī vow was transferred by him [to you];
2.5.12.21
dharmopari matirjātā jātaḥ pāpasya saṃkṣayaḥ .. 2.5.12.10 ..
thus your mind became set upon righteousness, and the destruction of your sin occurred.
2.5.12.22
tena puṇyaprabhāveṇa ekādaśyā vratena ca ..
By the power of that merit, and through the vow of the Ekādaśī,
2.5.12.23
daśamīvedhajaṃ pāpaṃ yamena parimārjitam .. 11 ..
the sin born of the overlap with the Daśamī was wiped away by Yama.
2.5.12.24
iha janmani yatpāpaṃ janmāyutakṛtāni ca ..
Whatever sin was committed in this birth, and those committed in ten thousand births,
2.5.12.25
mārjitāni yamenaiva pāpāni tava sāṃpratam .. 12 ..
all your sins have now been wiped away by Yama himself.”
2.5.12.26
tayorvivadatorevaṃ viṣvaksenaḥ samāgataḥ ..
While the two were conversing in this manner, Viṣvaksena arrived:
2.5.12.27
varṇāvara svāgataṃ te tuṣṭastehaṃ janārdanaḥ .. 13 ..
“O low-born one, welcome to you! I, Janārdana, am pleased with you.
2.5.12.28
viprasyā''tithyahetutvājjātaḥ pāpasya saṃkṣayaḥ ..
Because of your hospitality to the brahmin, the destruction of your sin has occurred.
2.5.12.29
paradattena puṇyena ekādaśyā vratena ca .. 14 ..
Through the merit given by another, and through the vow of the Ekādaśī,
2.5.12.30
daśamīvedhajaṃ pāpaṃ tava śūdra layaṃ gatam ..
your sin born of the overlap with the Daśamī has dissolved, O śūdra.
2.5.12.31
vrataṃ kṛtvā dadau puṇyaṃ dauhitrastena tāritaḥ .. 15 ..
Your daughter's son performed the vow and gave the merit; thereby you have been delivered.
2.5.12.32
patnyā saha mahābhāga vainateyaṃ samāruha ..
Mount the son of Vinatā [Garuḍa] together with your wife, O noble one!”
2.5.12.33
ityuktvā devadevena vimāne sthāpitastadā .. 16 ..
Having spoken thus, he was then placed in an aerial chariot by the God of gods.
2.5.12.34
svargaṃ tataḥ sapatnīkaḥ śūdratvena nṛpottama ..
Then, along with his wife, despite his śūdra status, [he went] to heaven, O best of kings.
2.5.12.35
devaśarmā tu vipro vai tīrtharājaṃ yayau punaḥ .. 17..
The brahmin Devaśarman, however, went again to the king of sacred fords.
2.5.12.36
etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ yattvayā paripṛcchitam ..
All this has been related to you, which was asked by you:
2.5.12.37
akhaṇḍaikādaśīpuṇyātprāptasyā''tithyakāraṇāt ..
that through the merit of the Akhaṇḍaikādaśī, obtained because of hospitality [offered to him],
2.5.12.38
viṣṇubhaktimatī bhāryā rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam .. .. 18 ..
[he obtained] a wife devoted to Viṣṇu and a kingdom rid of all thorns.
2.5.12.39
.. rājovāca .. ..
The king said:
2.5.12.40
brahmannakhaṇḍaikādaśyā vidhiṃ samyaksamādiśa ..
O brahmin, teach properly the rule for the Akhaṇḍaikādaśī;
2.5.12.41
viṣṇoḥ samprīṇanārthāya prasādaṃ kartumarhasi .. 19 ..
you ought to show favour for the sake of pleasing Viṣṇu.
2.5.12.42
.. ṛṣiruvāca .. ..
The seer said:
2.5.12.43
śṛṇuṣva nṛpaśārdūla ekādaśyā vidhiṃ śubham ..
Listen, O tiger among kings, to the auspicious rule for Ekādaśī,
2.5.12.44
purā''sīdbhagavānviṣṇurnāradāya yaduktavān .. 2.5.12.20 ..
which formerly the blessed Lord Viṣṇu told to Nārada.
2.5.12.45
tatte'haṃ saṃpravakṣyāmi udyāpanavidhiṃ śubham ..
I shall declare that to you, [and] the auspicious rule of formal conclusion,
2.5.12.46
mārgaśīrṣādimāseṣu dvādaśīṣu narottama .. 21 ..
on the twelfth days in the months beginning with Mārgaśīrṣa, O best of men.
2.5.12.47
vrataṃ śubhamidaṃ kāryamakhaṇḍaikādaśīvratam ..
This auspicious vow, the Akhaṇḍaikādaśī vow, should be performed:
2.5.12.48
daśamyāṃ caiva naktaṃ ca ekādaśyāmupoṣaṇam .. .. 22 ..
a single night meal on the tenth, fasting on the eleventh,
2.5.12.49
dvādaśyāmekabhuktaṃ ca akhaṃḍā iti kathyate ..
and a single meal on the twelfth; [this] is called 'the unbroken' [vow].
2.5.12.50
divasasyāṣṭame bhāge mandībhūte divākare .. 23 ..
In the eighth portion of the day, when the sun has grown weak,
2.5.12.51
