bring immediate delight to Viṣṇu, and are indeed causes of the goals of human life.
2.7.11.4
na prakhyātāḥ kathaṃ loke śāśvatāḥ śruticoditāḥ ..
Why are they not renowned in the world, eternal though they are and enjoined by the Vedas?
2.7.11.5
prakhyātā rājasā dharmāstāmasā api bhūriśaḥ .. 2 ..
Religious duties of the nature of rajas, and even those of the nature of tamas, are widely renowned,
2.7.11.6
durghaṭā vahuyatnāśca vahudravyavyayāvahāḥ ..
difficult to accomplish, requiring great effort, and entailing the expenditure of much wealth.
2.7.11.7
kecinmāghaṃ praśaṃsanti cāturmāsyānpare jaguḥ .. 3 ..
Some praise the month of Māgha; others proclaim the four months of the rainy season (Cāturmāsya).

Explain this distinction in detail to me, who am eager to hear.
2.7.11.10
.. śrutadeva uvāca .. ..
Śrutadeva said:
2.7.11.11
śṛṇu bhūpa pravakṣyāmi na prakhyātā ime katham ..
Listen, O king; I will explain why these are not renowned,
2.7.11.12
itareṣāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ kathaṃ khyātiśca bhūtale .. 5 ..
and how the other religious duties have gained renown on earth.
2.7.11.13
rājasāstāmasā bhūmau bahavaḥ kāmukā janāḥ ..
On earth, people of the nature of rajas and tamas are numerous, full of desire.
2.7.11.14
icchaṃtyaihikabhogāṃste putrapautrādisaṃpadaḥ .. 6 ..
They desire worldly enjoyments and the wealth of sons, grandsons, and the like.
2.7.11.15
kvacitkathaṃcana kvā'pi janeṣveko'tikṛcchrataḥ ..
Rarely, somehow, somewhere, only one person among men, with utmost difficulty,
2.7.11.16
svargāya yatate loke tasmādyajñādisatkriyāḥ .. 7 ..
strives for heaven in this world; therefore, sacrifices and other pious rites

a man performs with intense effort, but does not pursue liberation.

People of petty hopes, engaged in manifold rituals, pursue desire-driven rites.
2.7.11.19
prakhyātā rājasā dharmāstāmasā api tena vai ..
Therefore, indeed, duties of the nature of rajas and even tamas are renowned,
2.7.11.20
na khyātāḥ sāttvikā dharmā hariprītikarā ime .. 9 ..
while these duties of the nature of sattva, pleasing to Hari, are not renowned.
2.7.11.21
niṣkāmikā ime dharmā hyaihikā''muṣmikapradāḥ ..
These desireless duties bestow both this world and the next;
2.7.11.22
na jānanti janā mūḍhā mohitā devamāyayā .. 2.7.11.10 ..
yet foolish people do not know them, deluded by divine illusion.
2.7.11.23
yathā''dhipatye saṃprāpte sarvasiddho manorathaḥ ..
Just as, when sovereignty has been attained, every wish is fulfilled,
2.7.11.24
mohanārthaṃ sthalaṃ prāptamādhipatyena hīyate .. 11 ..
yet a place obtained for delusion's sake falls away through that sovereignty,
2.7.11.25
kāraṇaṃ ca pravakṣyāmi gopane bhūtaleṃ'jasā ..
so also I shall declare to you the cause of the concealment on earth,
2.7.11.26
yadvaiśākhoktadharmāṇāṃ sāttvikānāṃ nṛṇāmiha .. 12 ..
in regard to these sattva-natured duties prescribed for Vaiśākha among men here.

2.7.11.40
kurvantyāṃdolikāṃ rājanvṛkṣaśākhāvalaṃbinīm ..
They made swings hanging from tree branches, O king.
2.7.11.41
ke yūyamiti papraccha vāsiṣṭhā iti te'bruvan .. 2.7.11.20 ..
“Who are you?” he asked; “We are the disciples of Vasiṣṭha,” they replied.
2.7.11.42
kimetaditi papraccha dharmā vaiśākhacoditāḥ ..
“What is this?” he asked. “These are duties enjoined for Vaiśākha,
2.7.11.43
pumarthahetava ime kriyante'smābhirañjasā .. 21 ..
causes of the goals of human life, which are being performed by us directly,
2.7.11.44
vasiṣṭhasyā''jñayā ceti te'buvannṛpasattamam ..
and by the command of Vasiṣṭha,” they told that best of kings.
2.7.11.45
etadācaraṇe puṃsāṃ kiṃ phalaṃ kastu tuṣyati ..22..
“By performing this, what fruit accrues to men, and who is pleased?
2.7.11.46
etadvistārya me brūta yūyaṃ samyagyathāśrutam ..
Explain this in detail to me, properly, just as you have heard it.”
2.7.11.47
iti rājñā tu saṃpṛṣṭāḥ pratyūcuste mahīpatim .. 23 ..
Thus questioned by the king, they replied to the lord of the earth:
2.7.11.48
gurorājñākrameṇaiva kurvatāṃ pathisatkriyāḥ ..
“For us who are performing benevolent deeds on the road solely in obedience to our guru's command,
2.7.11.49
nāsmākamavakāśo'tra guruṃ pṛccha yathocitam .. 24 ..
there is no leisure here; ask the guru properly.
2.7.11.50
sa vetti tattvato nūnaṃ dharmānetānmahāyaśāḥ ..
He, the highly renowned one, truly knows these duties in essence.”
2.7.11.51
iti śiṣyairvasiṣṭhasya pratyuktastu drutaṃ yayau ..25..
Addressed thus by the disciples of Vasiṣṭha, he quickly went
2.7.11.52
vasiṣṭhasyā'śramaṃ puṇyaṃ vidyāyogopabṛṃhitam ..
to Vasiṣṭha's holy hermitage, filled with sacred learning and yoga.
2.7.11.53
samāyāntaṃ nṛpaṃ vīkṣya vasiṣṭhaḥ prītamānasaḥ ..26..
Seeing the king arriving, Vasiṣṭha, pleased in mind,
2.7.11.54
ātithyaṃ vidhivaccakre sānugasya mahātmanaḥ..
rendered hospitality according to rule to that great soul along with his retinue.
2.7.11.55
sūpaviṣṭaḥ kṛtā'tithyaḥ prītaḥ papraccha taṃ gurum .. 27 ..
Comfortably seated, having received hospitality, pleased, he questioned that guru.
2.7.11.56
.. rājovāca .. ..
The king said:
2.7.11.57
mārge dṛṣṭaṃ mahāścaryaṃ tvacchiṣyaiśca kṛtaṃ śubham ..
On the way, a great marvel was seen, an auspicious act performed by your disciples.
2.7.11.58
mayā pṛṣṭaṃ ca tairnoktaṃ kriyamāṇaṃ śubhāvaham .. 28 ..
Though questioned by me, they did not speak of what was being performed, which brings auspiciousness.
2.7.11.59
nāsmākamavakāśo'tra hyetaddharmapraśaṃsane ..
“We have no opportunity here to praise this dharma;
2.7.11.60
kartabyā ca kriyā'smābhirguruṇā yā ca coditā .. 29 ..
and the rite instructed by our guru must be performed by us.”
2.7.11.61
guruṃ gaccheti tairukta āgato'haṃ tavāṃtikam ..
Told by them, “Go to the guru,” I have come into your presence.
2.7.11.62
mṛgayā''saktacittena śrāṃtenātithyamicchatā .. 2.7.11.30 ..
With a mind intent on hunting, exhausted, desiring hospitality,
2.7.11.63
dṛṣṭaṃ mārge tvidaṃ puṇyaṃ tava śiṣyaiśca kāritam ..
this holy deed, indeed performed by your disciples, was seen on the way.
2.7.11.64
jijñāsā''sīttataḥ śrotuṃ dharmānetānmunīśvara .. 31 ..
Therefore there arose a desire to know, to hear these dharmas, O lord of sages.
2.7.11.65
tvamādirādimāndharmānsamācarasi vai yataḥ ..
Since you are the first, practicing the primeval dharmas,
2.7.11.66
tāndharmāñcchrotukāmāya śiṣyāya praṇatāya ca .. 32 ..
to a disciple eager to hear those dharmas and bowed down in reverence,
2.7.11.67
śraddadhānāya me brūhi vistarānmunipuṃgava ..
to me, faithful, speak in detail, O best of sages.
2.7.11.68
itīkṣvākukulīnena rājñā pṛṣṭo mahāyaśāḥ .. 33 ..
Thus questioned by the king born in the Ikṣvāku lineage, the illustrious one
2.7.11.69
manasā toṣamāpede samyakpṛṣṭo'dhunā'munā ..
felt satisfaction in his mind: “I have now been properly questioned by him.
2.7.11.70
aho vyavasitā buddhī rājaste'dya suśikṣitā .. 34 ..
Ah, resolute is your intellect today, O king, well-disciplined,
2.7.11.71
yasmādviṣṇukathāyāṃ ca taddharmācaraṇe'pi ca ..
since both regarding the discourse on Viṣṇu and in the practice of his dharma
2.7.11.72
matirātyaṃtikī jātā sukṛtaṃ phalitaṃ tava .. 35 ..
an ultimate disposition has arisen; your meritorious deed has borne fruit!”
2.7.11.73
iti saṃbhāṣya rājānaṃ jātaharṣastamabravīt ..
Addressing the king thus, filled with joy, he said to him:
2.7.11.74
śṛṇu bhūpa pravakṣyāmi yatpṛṣṭo'haṃ tvayādhunā .. 36 ..
“Listen, O king, I shall speak of what I have now been asked by you,
2.7.11.75
yasya śravaṇamātreṇa mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ ..
by the mere hearing of which one is freed from all sins.
2.7.11.76
sarvadharmānparityajya vartate viṣayātmakaḥ ..37..
Even if one lives devoted to sensual pleasures, abandoning all dharmas,
2.7.11.77
vaiśākhasnānanirataḥ sa priyo madhuvidviṣaḥ ..
if intent upon the ritual ablution in Vaiśākha, he is dear to the enemy of Madhu.
2.7.11.78
sāṃgāndharmānanuṣṭhāya vaiśākho yena nādṛtaḥ .. 38 ..
By whomsoever the month of Vaiśākha is disregarded, even though he performs dharmas with their limbs,
2.7.11.79
snānadānārcanaiḥ puṇyaistasya dūrataro hariḥ ..
through meritorious ritual ablutions, gifts, and worship, Hari is very far from him.
2.7.11.80
asnāpya cā'pyadattvā ca vaiśākho yena nīyate .. 39 ..
By whomsoever the month of Vaiśākha is spent without bathing [the deity] and without giving gifts,
2.7.11.81
karmaṇā sa tu caṇḍālo nā'tra kāryā vicāraṇā ..
he is indeed a caṇḍāla by action; no deliberation is to be made here.
2.7.11.82
vaiśākhoktairmahādharmairyena cā''rādhito hariḥ .. 2.7.11.40 ..
And by whomsoever Hari is worshipped with the great dharmas enjoined for Vaiśākha,
2.7.11.83
taiśca toṣaṃ samāyāti pradadāti samīhitam ..
by those [offerings] he attains satisfaction and grants the desired object.
2.7.11.84
lakṣmībharttā jagannātho hyaśeṣāghaughanāśanaḥ .. 41 ..
The husband of Lakṣmī, the Lord of the World, the destroyer of the entire mass of sins,
2.7.11.85
dharmaiḥ sūkṣmaiśca prīṇāti na prayāsairdhanairapi ..
is pleased by subtle dharmas, not by great efforts or wealth.
2.7.11.86
bhaktyā saṃpūjito viṣṇuḥ pradadāti samīhitam .. 42 ..
Worshipped with devotion, Viṣṇu grants what is desired.
2.7.11.87
tasmādrājansadā bhaktiḥ kartavyā madhuvidviṣaḥ ..
Therefore, O king, devotion to the enemy of Madhu must always be practiced.
2.7.11.88
jalenā'pi jagannāthaḥ pūjitaḥ kleśahā hariḥ .. 43 ..
Hari, the Lord of the World who removes afflictions, even when worshipped with water,
2.7.11.89
paritoṣaṃ vrajatyāśu tṛṣārtaḥ salilairyathā ..
speedily reaches satisfaction, just as a person afflicted by thirst [is satisfied] with water.
2.7.11.90
mahadapyalpadaṃ karma tathā hyalpaṃ ca bhūridam .. 44 ..
Even a great action may yield little, and likewise a small one may yield much.
2.7.11.91
karmaṇā'lpatvabhūritve na hetū mahadalpake ..
The greatness or smallness of an action are not the cause of whether it yields little or much;
2.7.11.92
kintu karmasvarūpaṃ ca gahanā karmaṇo gatiḥ .. 45 ..
rather, the nature of the action [matters], and deep is the course of action.
2.7.11.93
vaiśākhoktā ime dharmāḥ svalpā''yāsakṛtā api ..
These dharmas enjoined for Vaiśākha, even when performed with very little effort
2.7.11.94
bahuvyayavināśāśca viṣṇoḥ prītikarā śubhāḥ .. 46 ..
and free from great expense, are pleasing to Viṣṇu and auspicious.
2.7.11.95
tasmāttvamapi bhūpāla vaiśākhoktānsamācara..
Therefore, O king, you too must practice those [dharmas] enjoined for Vaiśākha,
2.7.11.96
tvadrāṣṭrīyairjanaiḥ sarvaiḥ kārayemāñcchubhāvahān..47..
and cause all the people of your realm to perform these auspicious [rites].
2.7.11.97
na karoti ca yo dharmānvaiśākhoktānnarādhamaḥ ..
And the vile man who does not perform the dharmas enjoined for Vaiśākha,
2.7.11.98
bahudhā śiṣyamāṇo'pi sa daṇḍyastava bhūpate ..48..
even when instructed in many ways, must be punished by you, O king.”
2.7.11.99
ityāvaśyakatāṃ samyakchāstrairvyutpādya tasya ca ..
Having thus fully demonstrated to him its necessity through the scriptures,
2.7.11.100
paścādvaiśākhanirdiṣṭāndharmānprovāca sarvaśaḥ..49..
he then proclaimed in full the dharmas specified for Vaiśākha.
2.7.11.101
śrutvā tānsakalāndharmānguruṃ saṃpūjya bhaktitaḥ ..
Having heard all those dharmas and worshipped his guru with devotion,
2.7.11.102
sa rājā gṛhamāgatya sarvāndharmāṃścakāra ha .. 2.7.11.50 ..
that king went home and indeed performed all those dharmas.
2.7.11.103
bhaktimānkeśave rājandevadeve nirañjane ..
Devoted to Keśava, O king, to the taintless God of gods,
2.7.11.104
nā'nyaṃ paśyati deveśātpadmanābhānmahīpatiḥ .. 51 ..
the ruler of the earth saw none other than the lotus-navelled Lord of gods.
2.7.11.105
bherīmudvāhya mātaṃgaṃ svarāṣṭre'ghoṣayadbhaṭaiḥ ..
Mounting a drum upon an elephant, he had his soldiers proclaim throughout his realm:
2.7.11.106
aṣṭavarṣādhiko martyo hyaśītirnahi pūryate .. 52 ..
“Any mortal older than eight years and not yet eighty,
2.7.11.107
prātarna snāti meṣasthe sūrye sarvo'pi yo janaḥ ..
whosoever does not bathe at dawn when the sun is in Aries,
2.7.11.108
sa me daṃḍyaśca vadhyaśca niryāsyo viṣayāddhruvam .. 53 ..
he shall certainly be punished by me, executed, and banished from the realm.
2.7.11.109
pitā vā yadi vā putro bhāryā vā'tha suhṛjjanaḥ ..
Be it father, or son, or wife, or a friend,
2.7.11.110
vaiśākhadharmahīnaśca nirgrāhyo dasyuvanmayā .. 54 ..
if devoid of the Vaiśākha dharma, he shall be seized by me like a bandit.
2.7.11.111
dātavyaṃ vipramukhyebhyaḥ snātvā prātarjale śubhe ..
Gifts must be given to foremost brahmins after bathing at dawn in auspicious water;
2.7.11.112
prapādānādidharmāṃśca kurudhvaṃ śaktito'naghāḥ .. 55 ..
and perform dharmas such as providing water booths according to your capacity, O sinless ones!”
2.7.11.113
vipraṃ ca dharmavaktāraṃ grāmegrāme nyaveśayat ..
And he appointed a brahmin expounder of dharma in every village,
2.7.11.114
pañcānāmapi grāmāṇāmakarodadhikāriṇam .. 56 ..
and he made an officer over every five villages,
2.7.11.115
daṇḍārthaṃ tyaktadharmāṇāṃ daśavājiniṣevitam ..
attended by ten horsemen, for the purpose of punishing those who abandoned dharma.
2.7.11.116
evaṃ pravṛttaḥ sarvatra sārvabhaumasya śāsanāt .. 57 ..
In this way, [dharma] was set in motion everywhere by the decree of the universal emperor;
2.7.11.117
pravṛddho dharmavṛkṣoyaṃ sarvadeśeṣu vistarāt ..
this tree of righteousness grew extensively throughout all lands.
2.7.11.118
ye kecinnidhanaṃ yāṃti bhūpālaviṣaye narāḥ .. 58 ..
Whatever men met death in that king's realm,
2.7.11.119
pramādācca nṛpaśreṣṭha te yāṃti harimandiram ..
even inadvertently, O best of kings, they went to Hari's abode.
2.7.11.120
avaśyaṃ vaiṣṇavo lokaḥ prāpyate mānavairdrutam .. 59 ..
The realm of Viṣṇu is swiftly attained by men without fail:
2.7.11.121
vyājenā'pi sakṛtsnātaḥ prātarmeṣagate ravau ..
one who has bathed even once under any pretext in the morning while the sun is in Aries,
2.7.11.122
sarvapāpavinirmukto yāti viṣṇoḥ paraṃ padam .. 2.7.11.60 ..
is freed from all sins and goes to the supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
2.7.11.123
na prāpnoti yamaṃ dharmaṃ sakṛdvaiśākhasnānataḥ ..
One does not reach Yama [or his] law because of a single ablution in Vaiśākha;
2.7.11.124
vailekhyamagamadrājā ravisūnustadā nṛpa .. 61 ..
then the king [Yama], the son of the Sun, fell into bewilderment, O king.
2.7.11.125
lekhyakarmaṇi viśrāntaścitragupto'bhavattadā ..
Citragupta then rested from his work of writing,
2.7.11.126
mārjitāni ca lekhyāni purā pāpodbhavāni ca .. 62 ..
and the former records arising from sin were wiped away.
2.7.11.127
gacchadbhirvaiṣṇavaṃ lokaṃ svakarmasthairjanaiḥ kṣaṇāt ..
As the people, steadfast in their duties, went in an instant to Viṣṇu's world,
2.7.11.128
śūnyāstu narakāḥ sarve pāpiprāṇivivarjitāḥ .. 63 ..
all the hells became completely empty, devoid of sinful creatures.
2.7.11.129
bhagnayāno'bhavanmārgo vaiśākhasya prabhāvataḥ ..
The path [to Yama's world] became broken of travel through the power of Vaiśākha;
2.7.11.130
sarve'pi vimalākārā janā yānti hareḥ padam .. 64 ..
all people, pure in form, went to the abode of Hari.
2.7.11.131
divaukasāṃ tu ye lokāḥ śūnyāḥ sarve tathā'bhavan ..
And the worlds of the gods also became completely desolate.
2.7.11.132
śūnye triviṣṭape jāte śūnyeṣu nara keṣu ca .. 65 ..
When heaven had become empty, and the hells had become empty,
2.7.11.133
nārado dharmarājānaṃ gatvā cedamuvāca ha ..
Nārada went to the King of Dharma and spoke these words:
2.7.11.134
nākrandaḥ śrūyate rājanprākcchruto narake yathā .. 66 ..
"No wailing is heard, O king, such as was heard before in hell;
2.7.11.135
tathā na kriyate lekhyaṃ kiṃcidduṣkṛtakarmaṇām..
nor is any record made of the evildoers.
2.7.11.136
citragupto muniriva sthito'yaṃ maunasaṃsthitaḥ .. 67 ..
Citragupta remains silent, standing like a silent sage.
2.7.11.137
kāraṇaṃ brūhi rājeṃdra na yānti tava mandiram ..
Tell me the reason, O king of kings, why they do not go to your abode—
2.7.11.138
manuṣyāḥ pāpakarmāṇo māyādambhavivardhitāḥ .. 68 ..
men who are committed to sinful deeds, thriving in illusion and deceit?"
2.7.11.139
evamukte tu vacane nāradena mahātmanā ..
When these words had been spoken by the great-souled Nārada,
2.7.11.140
prāha vaivasvato rājā kiṃciddainyasamanvitaḥ .. 69 ..
King Vaivasvata [Yama] replied, filled with a touch of despair:
2.7.11.141
yo'yaṃ nārada bhūpālaḥ pṛthivyāṃ sāṃprataṃ sthitaḥ ..
"This king who is now reigning on the earth, O Nārada—
2.7.11.142
so'tibhakto hṛṣīkeśe purāṇapuruṣottame .. 2.7.11.70 ..
he is exceedingly devoted to Hṛṣīkeśa, the ancient supreme Puruṣa.
2.7.11.143
prabodhayati vaiśākhadharme bherīsvanena ca ..
He rouses [the people] to the duties of Vaiśākha with the sounding of kettle-drums:
2.7.11.144
aṣṭavarṣādhiko martyo hyaśītirna hi pūryate .. 71 ..
'Any mortal older than eight years and not yet eighty
