2.7.9.7
yaśasyaṃ putradaṃ dharmyaṃ sarvarogavināśanam ..
which brings renown, bestows sons, conforms to dharma, and destroys all diseases.
2.7.9.8
śaṃbhunā tu hate kāme tatpatnī ratisaṃjñikā ..3..
When Kāma was slain by Śambhu, his wife named Rati, (3)
2.7.9.9
mumoha purato dṛṣṭvā patiṃ bhasmāvaśeṣitam..
she fainted on seeing her husband reduced to ashes before her.
2.7.9.10
jātasaṃjñā muhūrtena vilalāpa ca citradhā .. 4 ..
Having regained consciousness after a moment, she lamented in diverse ways,
2.7.9.11
yadvilāpādvanaṃ cāpi samaduḥkhamabhūttadā ..
at whose lamentation even the forest shared her grief then.
2.7.9.12
taccitāgnau svakāyaṃ tu tyaktukāmā ca mādhavam.. 5 ..
And wishing to abandon her own body in the fire of his funeral pyre, she remembered Mādhava,
2.7.9.13
patyuḥ sakhāyaṃ sasmāra kartuṃ tātkālikīṃ kriyām ..
her husband's friend, to perform the rites due at that moment.
2.7.9.14
sa āgataścitiṃ karttuṃ vīrapatnyā mahāprabhuḥ .. 6 ..
He, the mighty lord, came to prepare the pyre for the hero's wife.
2.7.9.15
sa tu trastaḥ sakhīṃ dṛṣṭvā kṣaṇaṃ mūrcchāparo'bhavat ..
Terrified at the sight of his friend's wife, he fell into a faint for a moment,
2.7.9.16
ratiṃ tu sāntvayāmāsa sāntvairbahuvidhairapi .. 7 ..
and then comforted Rati with various words of consolation:
2.7.9.17
putratulyo'smi te bhadre sthite mayi ca nā'rhasi ..
“I am like a son to you, auspicious lady; while I am here, you ought not
2.7.9.18
kāyaṃ tyaktuṃ dharmahetumityādyairbahudhā'pi sā .. 8 ..
to abandon your body, which is the instrument of dharma.” Though thus [comforted] in many ways,
2.7.9.19
naiva sthātuṃ manaścakre tena saṃstabhitā ratiḥ ..
Rati, restrained by him, by no means set her mind on living.
2.7.9.20
dṛṣṭvā dārḍhyaṃ vasanto'pi citiṃ cakre sarittaṭe .. 9 ..
Seeing her resolve, Vasanta prepared a pyre on the riverbank.
2.7.9.21
sā'vagāhya dyunadyāṃ ca kṛtvā kāryāṇi sarvaśaḥ ..
She plunged into the heavenly river, performed all the necessary rites,
2.7.9.22
sanniyamyendriyagrāmaṃ niveśyātmani vai manaḥ .. 2.7.9.10 ..
restrained the collection of her senses, placed her mind firmly upon the Self,
2.7.9.23
citimāroḍhumārebhe tato jātā'śarīravāk ..
and began to mount the funeral pyre. Then a bodiless voice arose:
2.7.9.24
mā praveśaya kalyāṇi vahniṃ patiparāyaṇā .. .. 11 ..
“Do not enter the fire, auspicious lady, devoted as you are to your husband!
2.7.9.25
bhaviṣyati ca te patyurharādviṣṇośca yādavāt ..
Your husband will have two births in succession,
2.7.9.26
janmadvayaṃ krameṇaiva tatra cottarajanmani .. 12 ..
from Hara and then from the Yādava Viṣṇu. There, in the latter birth,
2.7.9.27
bhaiṣmyāṃ kṛṣṇānmahāviṣṇoḥ pradyumnākhyo bhaviṣyati ..
he will be born of Kṛṣṇa, the Great Viṣṇu, through the daughter of Bhīṣmaka, named Pradyumna.
2.7.9.28
vasiṣyasi tvaṃ ca śāpādbrahmaṇaḥ śaṃbarālaye .. 13 ..
And you, through the curse of Brahmā, will dwell in Śambara's abode,
2.7.9.29
pradyumnākhyena te patyā saṃgatiśca bhaviṣyati ..
and you will be united with your husband named Pradyumna.”
2.7.9.30
ityuktvā virarāmā'tha vāṇī cā''kāśagocarā .. 14 ..
Having spoken thus, the voice resounding in the sky fell silent.
2.7.9.31
śrutvā tāṃ tu nivṛttā'bhūnmaraṇe kṛtaniścayā ..
Having heard it, though resolved upon death, she turned back.
2.7.9.32
tato devāḥ samājagmuḥ svārthe kāme hate harāt.. 15 ..
Then, their own purpose served when Kāma was slain by Hara, the gods assembled,
2.7.9.33
ratyā kṛtaṃ prapaśyanto gurvindrāgnipurogamāḥ ..
led by the preceptor, Indra, and Agni, observing what Rati had done.
2.7.9.34
tāṃ te nivartayāmāsurvareṇa mahatā satīm .. 16 ..
They restrained the chaste woman by granting her a great boon:
2.7.9.35
anaṃgo'pi bhavetsā'ṅgo mṛta evā'kṣigo bhavet ..
“Though bodiless, he will become embodied; though dead, he will become visible to your eyes.”
2.7.9.36
iti tāṃ tu vinirvartya dharmaṃ copadideśire .. 17 ..
Having thus dissuaded her, they instructed her in dharma:
2.7.9.37
pūrvakalpe tvayaṃ rājā suṃdarākhyo mahāprabhuḥ ..
“In a previous kalpa, this king named Sundara was a mighty lord,
2.7.9.38
tvameva patnī tatrā'pi rajaḥsaṃkarakāriṇī .. 18 ..
and you alone were his wife even then, having caused a mingling of menstrual blood.
2.7.9.39
teneyañca daśābhūtte kurvidānīṃ ca niṣkṛtīm ..
Because of that, this condition has befallen you; perform expiation now:
2.7.9.40
maṃdākinyāṃ tu vaiśākhe prātaḥsnānaṃ tadā kuru .. 19 ..
perform morning ritual ablution in the Mandākinī during the month of Vaiśākha;
2.7.9.41
madhusūdanamabhyarcya kathāṃ divyāṃ tathā śṛṇu ..
worship Madhusūdana, and listen likewise to the divine narrative;
2.7.9.42
aśūnyaśayanaṃ nāma vratamārabha bhāmini .. 2.7.9.20 ..
undertake the observance named Aśūnyaśayana, radiant lady!
2.7.9.43
dharmeṇā'nena te bhadre vratenā'pi ca mādhave ..
By this righteous conduct and by the observance in the month of Mādhava, auspicious lady,
2.7.9.44
nūnaṃ ta bhavitā patyurupalabdhirna saṃśayaḥ .. 21 ..
the recovery of your husband will surely come to pass for you; there is no doubt.”
2.7.9.45
iti tasyai varaṃ dattvā devā jagmuryathā''gatāḥ ..
Having thus granted her a boon, the gods departed as they had come.
2.7.9.46
tathā kṛcchrānnivṛttā sā devī kāmasatī tathā .. 22 ..
Having thus turned back from her severe ordeal, that goddess, Kāma's chaste wife,
2.7.9.47
gaṃgā'vagāhanaṃ cakre meṣasaṃsthe divākare ..
performed ablution in the Gaṅgā when the sun stood in Aries,
2.7.9.48
aśūnyaśayanaṃ nāma vrataṃ cā'pi mahāmanāḥ .. 23 ..
and the high-minded lady [undertook] the observance named Aśūnyaśayana.
2.7.9.49
tena puṇyaprabhāvena sadyaḥ kāmo'kṣigocaraḥ ..
By the power of that religious merit, immediately Kāma became visible to her eyes,
2.7.9.50
abhūttasyai mahārāja loke cāvārya vīryavān .. 24 ..
O great king, possessing irresistible valor in the world.
2.7.9.51
pūrvakalpe'pyayamapi rājā dharmaparāyaṇaḥ ..
In a previous kalpa too, he was a king devoted to righteousness;
2.7.9.52
vaiśākhoktānmahādharmānnākarottena vai smaraḥ..25..
because he did not perform the great duties prescribed for Vaiśākha, Smara
2.7.9.53
dehahāniṃ prapede'sau putro'pi paramātmanaḥ ..
suffered the destruction of his body, even though he was a son of the Supreme Self,
2.7.9.54
vṛthā nīte tu vaiśākhe meṣasaṃsthe divākare .. 26 ..
when Vaiśākha was passed in vain while the sun stood in Aries.
2.7.9.55
avastheyaṃ ca devānāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ tu kā kathā ..
If this was the plight of the gods, what then of human beings?
2.7.9.56
tryaṃbakeṃ'tarhite paścānnirāśā girikanyakā .. 27 ..
After Tryambaka disappeared, the mountain's daughter was despondent;
2.7.9.57
tūṣṇīṃ sthitāṃ tadā bhrāṃtāṃ tāṃ dṛṣṭvā himavāngiriḥ ..
seeing her standing silently and bewildered, the Himavat mountain
2.7.9.58
cakitaḥ svagṛhaṃ ninye dorbhyāṃ tāṃ parirabhya ca .. 28 ..
was astonished, embraced her with both arms, and took her to his own home.
2.7.9.59
rūpaudāryaguṇāndṛṣṭvā harasyaiva mahātmanaḥ ..
Having seen the beauty, generosity, and virtues of the great-souled Hara alone,
2.7.9.60
sa eva me patirbhūyāditi tanniṣṭhamānasā .. 29 ..
with her mind devoted solely to him, thinking, “May he alone be my husband,”
2.7.9.61
gaṃgopakūlamāpede tapastaptuṃ dhṛtavratā ..
she went to the bank of the Gaṅgā to perform austerity, holding fast to her vows,
2.7.9.62
nivāritā'pi sā devī pitrā mātrā svakairjanaiḥ .. 2.7.9.30 ..
though she was dissuaded by her father, her mother, and her kinsmen.
2.7.9.63
arcayantī mahāliṃgaṃ nirāhārā jaṭādharā ..
Worshiping the great liṅga, taking no food, bearing matted locks,
2.7.9.64
divyavarṣasahasrānte pratyakṣo'bhūnmaheśvaraḥ .. 31 ..
at the end of a thousand divine years Maheśvara became visible to her.
2.7.9.65
bhūtvā varṇyapi sāyāhne parṇaśālāmukhe vibhuḥ ..
Assuming the form of a celibate student, the omnipresent Lord, at dusk, at the entrance to her leaf-hut,
2.7.9.66
svaniṣṭhamanaso dārḍhyaṃ vākyairnānāvidhairapi .. 32 ..
tested the firmness of her mind devoted to him through various arguments;
2.7.9.67
jñātvā varādaraṃ bhadre varayeti mahāprabhuḥ ..
recognizing her eagerness for the boon, the great lord said: “Choose a boon, auspicious lady!”
2.7.9.68
sā vavre'tha patiṃ rudraṃ tvaṃ bhaveti varānanā ..33..
Then that fair-faced lady chose Rudra as her husband, saying: “Be thou [my husband].”
2.7.9.69
sa tathaiva varaṃ dattvā ṛṣīnsasmāra sapta ca ..
Having granted the boon in just that way, he remembered the seven seers.
2.7.9.70
ājagmuste'pi munayaḥ sthitāḥ prāñjalayaḥ puraḥ ..34..
Those sages also came and stood before him with folded hands.
2.7.9.71
ṛṣīṇāṃ jñāpayāmāsa kanyāṃ praṣṭuṃ himālayam ..
He instructed the seers to ask Himālaya for the maiden.
2.7.9.72
tathā''diṣṭā bhagavatā kanyārthaṃ himavadgṛham ..35..
Thus commanded by the Lord, for the sake of the maiden, to Himavat's home
2.7.9.73
prāpurvihāyasā sarve dyotayanto diśo daśa ..
they all arrived through the sky, illuminating the ten directions.
2.7.9.74
pratyujjagāma sa giriḥ saptaitānbrahmavittamān .. 36 ..
That mountain went out to meet those seven, foremost among knowers of Brahman.
2.7.9.75
saṃpūjya vidhivatsarvānsukhāsīnānapṛcchata ..
Having worshipped them all according to rule, once they were comfortably seated, he asked:
2.7.9.76
dhanyo'smi kṛtakṛtyo'smi yadbhavato gṛhā''gatāḥ .. 37 ..
“Blessed am I, my purpose accomplished, since you have come to my home.
2.7.9.77
bhavadāgamanaṃ manye mama janmaphalaṃ tviti ..
I consider your coming to be indeed the fruit of my birth.
2.7.9.78
na kṛtyaṃ vidyate'smābhiḥ pūrṇārthānāṃ mahātmanām .. 38 ..
There is nothing to be done by us for great souls whose aims are already fulfilled.
2.7.9.79
tathā'pi brūta kāryaṃ vo yatkartavyaṃ mayā'dhunā ..
Nevertheless, tell me your task, what must be done by me now.”
2.7.9.80
ityuktāste tathā procurhimavaṃtaṃ mahāgirim .. 39 ..
Addressed thus, they spoke accordingly to Himavat, the great mountain:
2.7.9.81
tvayā svasadṛśaṃ vākyamuktaṃ giripate dṛḍham ..
“Words worthy of yourself have surely been spoken by you, O lord of mountains!
2.7.9.82
asmadāgamane hetuṃ vakṣyāmaste mahodaye .. 2.7.9.40 ..
We shall tell you the reason for our coming, O highly exalted one.
2.7.9.83
kanyā te pārvatī nāma pūrvaṃ dakṣātmajā satī ..
Your daughter named Pārvatī was formerly Satī, the daughter of Dakṣa.
2.7.9.84
jātā tava kumārī yā yajñe tyaktakalevarā .. 41 ..
Born as your maiden, she had abandoned her body at the sacrifice.
2.7.9.85
asyāḥ pāṇigrahe dakṣaḥ śaṃbhurnā'nyo jagattraye ..
In the three worlds, none other than Śambhu is competent to take her hand in marriage.
2.7.9.86
deyā sā śaṃbhave devī bhavatā''naṃtyamicchatā .. 42 ..
That goddess should be given by you, desiring immortality, to Śambhu.
2.7.9.87
pūrvajanmasahasreṣu bhavatā sukṛtaṃ kṛtam ..
Good deeds were performed by you in thousands of past lives;
2.7.9.88
idānīṃ tava diṣṭyā tu paripākamupāgatam .. 43 ..
now, by your good fortune, they have come to fruition.”
2.7.9.89
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā saṃhṛṣṭā''tmā mahāgiriḥ ..
Hearing those words of theirs, the great mountain, delighted at heart,
2.7.9.90
vyājahāra punarvākyaṃ putrī valkaladhāriṇī .. 44 ..
spoke again: “My daughter, wearing bark garments,
2.7.9.91
gaṃgātīre nirāhārā tapastapati duścaram..
fasting on the bank of the Gaṅgā, performs severe austerity,
2.7.9.92
kāṅkṣamāṇā patiṃ śaṃbhuṃ tasyā iṣṭamidaṃ tviti..45..
desiring Śambhu as her husband. Indeed, this is her desire.
2.7.9.93
dattā kanyā mayā tasmai tryaṃbakāya mahātmane ..
The maiden is given by me to that three-eyed, great-souled one.
2.7.9.94
śīghraṃ gatvā bhavaṃtastu yatra śambhurmahāprabhuḥ .. 46 ..
Going quickly to where Śambhu, the great lord, is,
2.7.9.95
prītyā himavatā dattāṃ gṛhāṇeti nivedya ca ..
and announcing: ‘Accept her, given with love by Himavat,’
2.7.9.96
bhavaṃta eva kurvaṃtu caitadvaivāhikīṃ kriyām .. 47 ..
you yourselves must perform this marriage rite.”
2.7.9.97
ityuktāste himavatā tamāmaṃtrya śivaṃ yayuḥ ..
Addressed thus by Himavat, they took leave of him and went to Śiva.
2.7.9.98
lakṣmyādyā yoṣitaḥ sarvā viṣṇvādyā devatā api .. 48 ..
All the women, led by Lakṣmī, and the deities, led by Viṣṇu,
2.7.9.99
ṣaṇmātaro'tha munayo draṣṭuṃ jagmurmahotsavam ..
the six mothers, and the sages went to see the great festival.
2.7.9.100
śivaḥ sarvāmaragaṇairmunibhirmātṛbhistathā .. 49 ..
Śiva, accompanied by all the hosts of immortals, the sages, and the mothers,
2.7.9.101
anvito vṛṣabhārūḍhaḥ pramathānāṃ gaṇairvṛtaḥ ..
mounted upon a bull, surrounded by hosts of Pramathas,
2.7.9.102
bherīśaṃkhamṛdaṃgādyaiḥ kāhalīpaṭahādikaiḥ .. .. 2.7.9.50 ..
with drums, conches, mṛdaṅgas and the like, with kāhalī trumpets, paṭahas and other instruments,
2.7.9.103
brahmaghoṣairbaṃdibhiśca prāviśaddhimavatpurīm ..
with Vedic chants and praise-singers, entered Himavat's city.
2.7.9.104
sumuhūrte śubhe lagne śubhagrahanirīkṣite .. 51 ..
At an auspicious moment, during an auspicious ascendant, aspected by auspicious planets,
2.7.9.105
vivāhamakarocchailaḥ prahṛṣṭenāṃtarātmanā ..
the mountain conducted the marriage with a heart full of joy.
2.7.9.106
mahotsavastadā cā''sīttrilokyāṃ prāṇināṃ nṛpa .. 52 ..
Then there was a great festival for living beings throughout the three worlds, O king.
2.7.9.107
mahotsave nivṛtte tu śaṃkaro lokaśaṃkaraḥ ..
When the great festival had concluded, Śaṃkara, who brings welfare to the world,
2.7.9.108
reme svacchaṃdayā devyā lokadharmānanuvrataḥ.. .. 53 ..
sported with the goddess at his pleasure, conforming to worldly ways.
2.7.9.109
ṛddhimaddhimavadgehe deveṃdrabhavanopame ..
In the prosperous abode of Himavat, which was like the palace of Indra,
2.7.9.110
śarvaryāṃ naṃdinītīre vanarājiṣu śaṃkaraḥ .. 54 ..
at night, on the bank of the Nandinī, in rows of forests
2.7.9.111
mattālidvijasannādamayūraravamaṃḍite ..
adorned with the humming of intoxicated bees and birds and the cries of peacocks,
2.7.9.112
divyavarṣasahasrāṇi reme svacchaṃdayā vibhuḥ .. 55 ..
the all-pervading lord sported at his pleasure for thousands of divine years.
2.7.9.113
strīṇāmiṃdravarābhāvāttasminkāle nṛpottama ..
Because women lacked Indra’s boon at that time, O best of kings,
2.7.9.114
puṃsaḥ saṃgātpunargarbho nārīṇāṃ sravati dhuvam .. 56 ..
from union with a man, women's embryos certainly miscarry.
2.7.9.115
pratyahaṃ ramaṇāddevyāṃ nābhūdgarbho harādbata ..
Alas, because of lovemaking every day, no embryo formed from Hara in the goddess.
2.7.9.116
devānāmabhavaccintā putrālābhādvarādvibho .. 57 ..
Anxiety arose among the gods because a son was not obtained by virtue of the boon, O lord.
2.7.9.117
sarve saṃgatya saṃmaṃtrya mitha evaṃ babhāṣire ..
All assembling and taking counsel, spoke thus among themselves:
2.7.9.118
kāmīvā'bhūdratau nityaṃ sakto devyā haraḥ svarāṭ .. 58 ..
“Like an impassioned man, Hara, the sovereign lord, has become constantly attached to lovemaking with the goddess.
2.7.9.119
nā'smākaṃ siddhyate kāryaṃ nityaṃ garbhasya saṃsravāt ..
Our objective is not accomplished because of the constant discharge of the embryo.
2.7.9.120
punā ratiryathā nā'bhūttathā'smābhirvidhīyatām .. 59 ..
Let it be arranged by us so that lovemaking does not take place again.”
2.7.9.121
mitha evaṃ tu saṃbhāṣya vyacinvankṣaṇamatra te ..
Having spoken thus among themselves, they deliberated here for a moment.
2.7.9.122
agniṃ kṛtye viniścitya hyūcurmānapuraḥsaram .. 2.7.9.60 ..
Deciding upon Agni for the task, they spoke to him with honor:
2.7.9.123
agne mukhaṃ tvaṃ devānāṃ tvaṃ bandhurgatireva ca ..
“O Agni, you are the mouth of the gods; you are their kin and refuge.
2.7.9.124
idānīmapi gaccha tvaṃ ramate yatra vai haraḥ .. 61 ..
Even now, go to where Hara is sporting.
2.7.9.125
ratyante darśayā''tmānaṃ punā ratiryathā na vai ..
Show yourself at the end of their lovemaking, so that lovemaking does not recur.
2.7.9.126
tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā vrīḍitā devī tataścāpasareddhruvam .. 62 ..
Seeing you, the goddess will feel ashamed and will surely withdraw from there.
2.7.9.127
śiṣyo bhūtvā tu ratyante pṛccha tattvaṃ smarāntakam ..
Then, having become a disciple at the end of lovemaking, question the slayer of Smara about the ultimate truth.
2.7.9.128
tattvasampraśnavyājena kālaṃ bahu naya prabho .. 63 ..
Under the pretext of asking questions about truth, pass much time, O lord!”
2.7.9.129
bahukāle gate devī kumāraṃ prasaviṣyati ..
When much time has passed, the goddess will give birth to Kumāra."
2.7.9.130
devairevaṃ prārthito'gniromityuktvā haraṃ yayau .. 64 ..
Thus entreated by the gods, Agni said, "Om," and went to Hara. 64.
2.7.9.131
vīryotsargātpūrvameva gato vahnī ratāṃtare ..
Even before the discharge of semen, the fire-god arrived during their lovemaking.
2.7.9.132
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vrīḍitā devī vivastrā vimanā yayau .. 65 ..
Seeing him, the goddess, ashamed and unclothed, went away dejected. 65.
2.7.9.133
rati vihāya tvarayā tato rudro'tikopitaḥ ..
Then Rudra, abandoning their lovemaking in haste and extremely enraged,
2.7.9.134
vahniṃ prāha gṛhāṇedamabhisṛṣṭaṃ tu durmate .. 66 ..
said to the fire-god: "Take this that has been emitted, O wicked one! 66.
2.7.9.135
madvīryaṃ duḥsahaṃ pāpa ratau vighnastvayā'bhavat ..
My semen is hard to bear, O sinner; an obstacle was made by you in our lovemaking.
2.7.9.136
utsṛjāmi ca madvīryaṃ tvanmukhe havyavāhana .. 67 ..
And I cast my semen into your mouth, O bearer of oblations!" 67.
2.7.9.137
ityuktvotsṛṣṭavānvīryaṃ havyavāhamukhe haraḥ ..
Having spoken thus, Hara discharged his semen into the mouth of the fire-god.
2.7.9.138
taddhṛtvā dahyamānaḥ sansvodare vīryamulbaṇam .. 68 ..
Bearing that ferocious semen in his belly, burning intensely, 68.
2.7.9.139
ciṃtayāno yayau dhāma devānāṃ yajñapūruṣaḥ ..
the person of sacrifice went to the abode of the gods, brooding.
2.7.9.140
kathaṃcitprāṇato mukto devebhyastannyavedayat .. 69 ..
Barely surviving, he reported that to the gods. 69.
2.7.9.141
devā vahnīritaṃ śrutvā harṣaśokau samāyayuḥ ..
Hearing what was spoken by the fire-god, the gods experienced both joy and sorrow:
2.7.9.142
sthitaṃ vīryamiti hrādaṃ kathaṃ tu prasavo bhavet .. 2.7.9.70 ..
There was joy that the semen was preserved, but "how will birth take place?" 70.
2.7.9.143
iti duḥkhaṃ tadā cā''sīdvahneḥ kukṣau tu śāṃbhavam ..
Such was the sorrow then; and in the belly of the fire-god that [seed] belonging to Śambhu,
2.7.9.144
vavṛdhe teja ākṣiptaṃ daśa māsā gatāstadā .. 71 ..
the cast-in fiery energy, grew; then ten months passed. 71.
2.7.9.145
nā'paśyatprasavopāyaṃ bahuduḥkhaparāyaṇaḥ ..
Engrossed in immense suffering, he saw no means of delivery.
2.7.9.146
devānvai śaraṇaṃ prāpa garbhamocanahetave .. 72 ..
He indeed took refuge with the gods for the sake of releasing the embryo. 72.
2.7.9.147
te devā vahninā sākaṃ prāpurgaṃgāṃ yaśasvinīm ..
Those gods, along with the fire-god, approached the glorious Gaṅgā.
