..śrīsūta uvāca.. ..
The venerable Sūta said:
3.1.10.51
brahmāśramapade vṛttāṃ pārśve himavataḥ śubhe..
Occurred at the site of the hermitage of Brahmā, on an auspicious side of the Himavat,
3.1.10.52
vakṣyāmi brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhā yuṣmākaṃ tu kathāṃ śubhām..24..
I shall tell you an auspicious story, O best of brahmins.
3.1.10.53
asyāśramapadaṃ puṇyaṃ brahmāśramapade śubhe ..
In the auspicious site of Brahmā's hermitage, this sacred hermitage site
3.1.10.54
nānāvṛkṣagaṇākīrṇaṃ pārśve himavataḥ śubhe .. 25 ..
was crowded with various kinds of trees, on an auspicious side of the Himavat,
3.1.10.55
vahugulmalatākīrṇaṃ mṛgadvipaniṣevitam ..
covered with numerous shrubs and creepers, frequented by deer and elephants,
3.1.10.56
siddhacāraṇasaṃghuṣṭaṃ ramyaṃ puṣpitakānanam .. 26 ..
resounding with Siddhas and Cāraṇas, delightful, a blooming forest,
3.1.10.57
vṛtibhirbahubhiḥ kīrṇaṃ tāpasairuśobhitam ..
filled with many enclosures, adorned with ascetics,
3.1.10.58
brāhmaṇaiśca mahābhāgaiḥ sūryajvalanasaṃnibhaiḥ .. 27 ..
and by highly fortunate brahmins resembling the sun and fire,
3.1.10.59
niyamavratasaṃ pannaiḥ samākīrṇaṃ tapasvibhiḥ ..
thronged with practitioners of austerity endowed with restraints and vows,
3.1.10.60
dīkṣitairyāgahetośca yatāhāraiḥ kṛtātmabhiḥ .. 28 ..
initiated for sacrifice, of restrained diet, of perfected self,
3.1.10.61
vedādhyayanasaṃpannairvaidikaiḥ pariveṣṭitam ..
surrounded by Vedic scholars accomplished in the recitation of the Vedas,
3.1.10.62
varṇibhiśca gṛhasthaiśca vānaprasthaiśca bhikṣubhiḥ .. 29 ..
by celibate students, householders, forest-dwellers, and mendicants,
3.1.10.63
svāśramācāranirataiḥ svavarṇoktavidhāyibhiḥ ..
devoted to the customs of their own stage of life, performing what is prescribed for their caste,
3.1.10.64
vālakhilyaiśca munibhiḥ saṃprāptaiśca marīcibhiḥ .. 3.1.10.30 ..
and with Vālakhilya sages and descendants of Marīci who had arrived.
3.1.10.65
tatrāśrame purā kaścicchūdro dṛḍhamatirdvijāḥ ..
In that hermitage long ago, O twice-born ones, a certain śūdra named Dṛḍhamati,
3.1.10.66
sāhasī brāhmaṇābhyāśamājagāma mudānvitaḥ .. 31 ..
daring, approached the presence of the brahmins with joy.
3.1.10.67
āgato hyāśramapadaṃ pūjitaśca tapasvibhiḥ ..
Having arrived at the hermitage site, and honoured by the ascetics,
3.1.10.68
nāmnā dṛḍhamatiḥ śūdraḥ sāṣṭāṃgaṃ praṇanāma vai .. 32 ..
the śūdra named Dṛḍhamati bowed down prostrate with all eight limbs.
3.1.10.69
tānsa dṛṣṭvā munigaṇāndevakalpānmahaujasaḥ ..
Seeing those hosts of sages, equal to gods and of great majesty,
3.1.10.70
kurvato vividhānyajñānsaṃprahṛṣya sa śūdrakaḥ .. 33 ..
performing various sacrifices, that śūdra rejoiced.
3.1.10.71
athāsya buddhirabhavattapaḥkartumanuttamam ..
Then the thought arose in him to perform peerless austerity.
3.1.10.72
tato'bravītkulapatiṃ munimāgatya tāpasam .. 34 ..
Approaching the ascetic sage who was the head of the hermitage, he said:
3.1.10.73
.. dṛḍhamatiruvāca .. ..
Dṛḍhamati said:
3.1.10.74
tapodhana namaste'stu rakṣa māṃ karuṇānidhe ..
O rich in austerity, homage to you; protect me, O ocean of compassion.
3.1.10.75
tava prasādādicchāmi dharmaṃ cartuṃ dvijarṣabha .. 35 ..
By your favor I wish to practice dharma, O bull among the twice-born.
3.1.10.76
tasmādabhigataṃ māṃ tvaṃ yāge dīkṣaya suvrata ..
Therefore, initiate me who have approached you into a sacrifice, O one of good vows.
3.1.10.77
brahmannavaravarṇo'haṃ śūdro jātyāsmi sattama .. 36 ..
O brahmin, I belong to the lowest caste; I am a śūdra by birth, O best of men.
3.1.10.78
śuśrūṣāṃ kartumicchāmi prapannāya prasīda me ..
I wish to render service; be gracious to me who have surrendered.
3.1.10.79
evamukte tu śūdreṇa tamāha brāhmaṇastadā .. 37 ..
When this was spoken by the śūdra, the brahmin then said to him:
3.1.10.80
.. kulapatiruvāca ..
The head of the hermitage said:
3.1.10.81
yāge dīkṣayituṃ śakyo na śūdro hīnajanmabhāk ..
A śūdra, born of low status, cannot be initiated into a sacrifice.
3.1.10.82
śrūyatāṃ yadi te buddhiḥ śuśrūṣānirato bhava .. 38 ..
Listen, if this is your inclination: become devoted to service.
3.1.10.83
upadeśo na kartavyo jātihīnasya karhicit ..
Instruction should never be given to one deficient in caste.
3.1.10.84
upadeśe mahāndoṣa upādhyāyasya vidyate .. 39 ..
A great fault accrues to the preceptor from giving instruction.
3.1.10.85
nādhyāpayedbudhaḥ śūdraṃ tathā naiva ca yājayet ..
A wise man should not teach a śūdra, nor officiate at a sacrifice for him;
3.1.10.86
na pāṭhayettathā śūdraṃ śāstraṃ vyākaraṇādikam .. 3.1.10.40 ..
likewise, he should not teach a śūdra a treatise such as grammar,
3.1.10.87
kāvyaṃ vā nāṭakaṃ vāpi tathālaṃkārameva ca ..
or poetry, or drama, or poetics;
3.1.10.88
purāṇamitihāsaṃ ca śūdraṃ naiva tu pāṭhayet .. 41 ..
nor should he teach a śūdra a Purāṇa or an epic.
3.1.10.89
yadi copadiśedvipraḥ śūdraṃ caitāni karhicit ..
If a brahmin should ever teach these to a śūdra,
3.1.10.90
tyajeyurbrāhmaṇā vipraṃ taṃ grāmādbrahmasaṃkulāt .. 42 ..
the brahmins would banish that brahmin from the village populated by brahmins.
3.1.10.91
śūdrāya copadeṣṭāraṃ dvijaṃ caṃḍālavattyajet ..
One should shun like an outcaste a twice-born man who instructs a śūdra,
3.1.10.92
śūdraṃ cākṣarasaṃyuktaṃ dūrataḥ parivarjayet ..43 ..
and one should avoid from afar a śūdra endowed with letters.
3.1.10.93
ataḥ śuśrūṣa bhadraṃ te brāhmaṇāñchraddhayā saha..
Therefore serve the brahmins with faith, blessings be upon you;
3.1.10.94
śūdrasya dvijaśuśrūṣā manvādibhirudīritā..44..
service to the twice-born was declared for a śūdra by Manu and others.
3.1.10.95
nahi naisargikaṃ karma parityaktuṃ tvamarhasi ..
For you ought not to abandon the duty born of your nature.
3.1.10.96
evamuktastu muninā sa śūdro'ciṃtayattadā .. 45 ..
Addressed thus by the sage, the śūdra then reflected:
3.1.10.97
kiṃ kartavyaṃ mayā tvadya vrate śraddhā hi me purā ..
What must be done by me now? For my faith has long been set upon vows.
3.1.10.98
yathā syānmama vijñānaṃ yatiṣye'haṃ tathādya vai .. 46 ..
I will strive today so that higher knowledge may be mine.
3.1.10.99
iti niścitya manasā śūdro dṛḍhamatistadā ..
Having thus resolved in his mind, the śūdra Dṛḍhamati then,
3.1.10.100
gatvāśramapadāddūraṃ kṛtavānuṭajaṃ śubham .. 47 ..
having gone far from the hermitage site, made an auspicious leaf-hut.
3.1.10.101
tatra vai devatāgāraṃ puṇyānyāyatanānica ..
There indeed [he built] a shrine to the gods and sacred sanctuaries,
3.1.10.102
puṣpārāmādikaṃ cāpi taṭākakhananādikam .. 48 ..
and flower gardens and the like, as well as the digging of ponds and so on,
3.1.10.103
śraddhayā kārayāmāsa tapaḥsiddhyarthamātmanaḥ ..
he caused to be made with faith for the sake of the success of his own austerity.
3.1.10.104
abhiṣekāṃśca niyamānupavāsādikānapi .. 49 ..
Ceremonial ablutions, observances, and fasts and the like,
3.1.10.105
baliṃ ca kṛtvā hutvā ca daivatānyabhyapūjayat ..
and offering oblations and sacrificing into the fire, he worshipped the deities.
3.1.10.106
saṃkalpaniyamopetaḥ phalāhāro jiteṃdriyaḥ .. 3.1.10.50 ..
Endowed with resolves and vows, subsisting on fruits, with senses subdued,
3.1.10.107
nityaṃ kaṃdaiśca mūlaiśca puṣpairapi tathā phalaiḥ ..
regularly with tubers, roots, flowers, and fruits,
3.1.10.108
atithīnpūjayāmāsa yathāvatsamupāgatān .. 51 ..
he properly honoured guests who arrived.
3.1.10.109
evaṃ hi sumahānkālo vyaticakrāma tasya vai ..
In this way, indeed, a very long time passed for him.
3.1.10.110
athāśramamagāttasya sumatirnāma nāmataḥ .. 52 ..
Then, to his hermitage came [a brahmin] named Sumati by name,
3.1.10.111
dvijo gargakulodbhūtaḥ satyavādī jiteṃdriyaḥ ..
a twice-born born in the lineage of Garga, truthful of speech, with senses subdued.
3.1.10.112
svāgatena muniṃ pūjya toṣayitvā phalādikaiḥ .. 53 ..
Having honoured the sage with a welcome and gratified him with fruits and the like,
3.1.10.113
kathayanvai kathāḥ puṇyāḥ kuśalaṃ paryapṛcchata ..
narrating holy stories, he enquired after his welfare.
3.1.10.114
itthaṃ sapraṇipātādyairupacāraistu pūjitaḥ .. 54 ..
Thus worshipped with attentions such as prostrations,
3.1.10.115
āśīrbhirabhinaṃdyainaṃ pratigṛhya ca satkriyām ..
delighting him with blessings and accepting his hospitality,
3.1.10.116
tamāpṛchya prahṛṣṭāpmā svāśramaṃ punarāyayau .. 55 ..
having taken leave of him, joyful in spirit, he returned to his own hermitage.
3.1.10.117
evaṃ dinedine vipraḥ śūdresminpakṣapātavān ..
Thus, day after day, the brahmin, showing partiality towards this Śūdra,
3.1.10.118
āgacchadāśramaṃ tasya draṣṭuṃ taṃ śūdrayonijam .. 56 ..
went to his hermitage to see that one of Śūdra birth.
3.1.10.119
bahukālaṃ dvijasyābhūtsaṃsargaḥ śūdrayoninā..
For a long time there was association between the twice-born and the one of Śūdra birth;
3.1.10.120
snehasya vaśamāpannaḥ śūdroktaṃ nāticakrame .. 57 ..
fallen under the sway of affection, he did not transgress what the Śūdra said.
3.1.10.121
athāgataṃ dvijaṃ śūdraḥ prāha snehavaśīkṛtam ..
Then the Śūdra said to the twice-born who had arrived, brought under the sway of affection:
3.1.10.122
havyakavyavidhānaṃ me kṛtsnaṃ brūhi munīśvara .. 58 ..
"Tell me, O lord of sages, the entire rule for offerings to gods and ancestors,
3.1.10.123
pitṛkāryavidhānārthaṃ devakāryārthameva ca ..
for the purpose of rites for the ancestors and for the purpose of rites for the gods.
3.1.10.124
maṃtrānupadiśa tvaṃ me mahālayavidhiṃ tathā .. 59 ..
Teach me the mantras, as well as the rite of the Mahālaya,
3.1.10.125
aṣṭakāśrāddhakṛtyaṃ ca vaidikaṃ yacca kiṃcana ..
the ritual of the Aṣṭakā śrāddha, and whatever is Vedic;
3.1.10.126
sarvametadrahasyaṃ me brūhi tvaṃ vai gururmataḥ.. 3.1.10.60 ..
tell me all this secret, for you are considered my guru."
3.1.10.127
evamuktaḥ sa śūdreṇa sarvametadupādiśat ..
Thus addressed by the Śūdra, he taught all this;
3.1.10.128
kārayāmāsa tasyāyaṃ pitṛkāryādikaṃ tathā .. 61 ..
he also had him perform the ancestral rites and the like.
3.1.10.129
pitṛkārye kṛte tena visṛṣṭaḥ sa dvijo gataḥ ..
When the ancestral rites were performed, dismissed by him, the twice-born departed.
3.1.10.130
atha dīrgheṇa kālena poṣitaḥ śūdrayoninā .. 62 ..
Then, having been supported for a long time by that one of Śūdra birth,
3.1.10.131
tyakto vipragaṇaiḥ so'yaṃ paṃcatvamagamaddvijaḥ
vaivasvatabhaṭairnītvā pātito narakeṣvapi .. 63 ..
abandoned by the hosts of brahmins, this twice-born met his death. / Carried away by the soldiers of Vaivasvata, he was cast into the hells.
3.1.10.132
kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi kalpakoṭiśatāni ca ..
For thousands of millions of kalpas and hundreds of millions of kalpas,
3.1.10.133
bhuktvā krameṇa narakāṃstadaṃte sthā varo'bhavat .. 64 ..
having experienced the hells in turn, at the end of that he became an immobile thing.
3.1.10.134
gardabhastu tato jajñe viḍvarāhastataḥ param ..
Then he was born as a donkey, and after that as a village pig;
3.1.10.135
jajñe'tha sārameyo'sau paścādvāyasatāṃ gataḥ .. 65 ..
then he was born as a dog, and afterwards he attained the state of a crow.
3.1.10.136
atha caṃḍālatāṃ prāpa śūdrayonimagāttataḥ ..
Then he attained the state of a Caṇḍāla, and then went to a Śūdra womb;
3.1.10.137
gatavānvaiśyatāṃ paścātkṣatriyastadanaṃtaram .. 66 ..
subsequently he attained the state of a Vaiśya, and immediately after that he was a Kṣatriya.
3.1.10.138
prabalairbādhyamāno'sau brāhmaṇo vai tadā'bhavat ..
Afflicted by strong [karmas], he then indeed became a brahmin.
3.1.10.139
upanītaḥ sa pitrā tu varṣe garbhāṣṭame dvijaḥ .. 67 ..
Invested with the sacred thread by his father in his eighth year from conception, that twice-born,
3.1.10.140
vartamānaḥ piturgehe svācārābhyāsatatparaḥ ..
residing in his father's house and intent on the practice of his proper conduct,
3.1.10.141
gacchankadācidgahane gṛhīto brahmarakṣasā .. 68 ..
while walking once in a dense forest, was seized by a brahmarākṣasa.
3.1.10.142
rudanbhramanskhala nmūḍhaḥ prahasanvilapannasau ..
Weeping, wandering, stumbling, bewildered, laughing aloud, lamenting,
3.1.10.143
śaśvaddhāheti ca vadanvaidikaṃ karma so'tyajat .. 69 ..
and constantly crying 'Alas, alas!', he abandoned Vedic duties.
3.1.10.144
dṛṣṭvā sutaṃ tathābhūtaṃ pitā duḥkhena pīḍitaḥ ..
Seeing his son become thus, the father was tormented by grief;
3.1.10.145
sutamādāya ca snehā dagastyaṃ śaraṇaṃ yayau .. 3.1.10.70 ..
taking his son, out of affection he went to Agastya for refuge.
3.1.10.146
bhaktyā muniṃ praṇamyāsau pitā tasya sutasya vai ..
Bowing with devotion to the sage, the father of that son
3.1.10.147
tasmai nivedayāmāsa svaputrasya viceṣṭitam .. 71 ..
reported to him the strange behaviour of his son.
3.1.10.148
abravīcca tadā vipraḥ kumbhajaṃ munipuṃgavam..
And then the brahmin said to the pitcher-born one, the best of sages:
3.1.10.149
eṣa me tanayo brahmangṛhīto brahmarakṣasā .. 72 ..
