'He who arrives mounted upon a four-tusked, huge-bodied elephant,

“O divine seer, formerly this maiden daughter of mine made a vow:
3.1.16.72

‘Whosoever should arrive having mounted a colossal elephant
3.1.16.73
āruhya yaḥ samāgacchetsa me bhartā bhavediti .. 35 ..
with four tusks, white in every limb, he shall become my husband.’
3.1.16.74
caturdaṃto mahākāyo gajaḥ sarvāṃgapāṃḍuraḥ ..
A colossal elephant with four tusks, white in every limb,
3.1.16.75
saṃbhavediṃdrabhavane bhūtale naiva vidyate .. 36 ..
might exist in the abode of Indra; on the surface of the earth it does not exist at all.
3.1.16.76
iyaṃ ca dustarāmenāṃ pratijñāṃ bāliśā'karot ..
And she, foolish girl, made this vow difficult to fulfill.
3.1.16.77
iyaṃ pratijñātitarāṃ satataṃ bādhate hi mām .. 37 ..
Indeed, this vow torments me constantly and exceedingly.
3.1.16.78
anūḍhā hi pituḥ kanyā sarvadā śokamāvahet ..
For an unmarried daughter always brings sorrow to her father.”
3.1.16.79

Hearing these words of his, Nārada said to Svanaya:
3.1.16.80

“Do not despair, O royal seer! Such a husband for her,
3.1.16.81
bhaviṣyatyacirādeva pṛthivyāṃ brāhmaṇottamaḥ .. 39 ..
an excellent brahmin, will soon appear on the earth.
3.1.16.82
kakṣīvāniti vikhyāto jāmātā te bhaviṣyati ..
Renowned as Kakṣīvat, he will become your son-in-law.”
3.1.16.83

Having spoken thus, the sage Nārada departed by way of the sky.
3.1.16.84
sva nayastadvacaḥ śrutvā nāradena prabhāṣitam ..
Svanaya, having heard those words spoken by Nārada,
3.1.16.85
ākāṃkṣate divārātraṃ tādṛgvidhasamāgamam .. 41 ..
longed day and night for the arrival of such a one.
3.1.16.86
ataḥ saumya mahābhāga kakṣīvanbālatāpasa ..
“Therefore, gentle and fortunate Kakṣīvat, young ascetic,
3.1.16.87
agastyatīrthamadya tvaṃ snātuṃ gaccha tvarānvitaḥ .. 42 ..
go in haste today to Agastyatīrtha to bathe.
3.1.16.88
sarvamaṃgalasiddhiste bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ..
Attainment of all auspiciousness will be yours, without a doubt.”

Thus addressed by Udaṅka, the eminent twice-born Kakṣīvat,
3.1.16.90
anu jñātaśca guruṇā prayayau gaṃdhamādanam ..
permitted by his guru, set forth to Gandhamādana.
3.1.16.91
saṃprāpyāgastyatīrthaṃ ca tatra sasnau jiteṃdriyaḥ .. 44 ..
Having reached Agastyatīrtha, he bathed there, his senses restrained.
3.1.16.92
kṣetropavāsamakaroddinamekaṃ munīśvaraḥ ..
The lordly sage observed a fast at the sacred field for one day.
3.1.16.93
aparedyuḥ punaḥ snātvā pāraṇāmakaroddvijaḥ .. 45 ..
On the next day, having bathed again, the brahmin broke his fast.
3.1.16.94
rātrau tatraiva suṣvāpa kakṣīvāndharmatatparaḥ ..
At night Kakṣīvat, dedicated to righteousness, slept right there.
3.1.16.95
evaṃ niyamayuktasya tasya kakṣīvato muneḥ .. 46 ..
For the sage Kakṣīvat, endowed with such observances,
3.1.16.96
ekena divase nonaṃ varṣatrayamathāgamat ..
three years, lessened by a single day, then passed.
3.1.16.97
atha varṣatrayasyāṃte tasminneva dine muniḥ .. 47 ..
Then, at the end of the three years, on that very day, the sage,
3.1.16.98
anvāsya paścimāṃ saṃdhyāṃ sukhaṃ suṣvāpa tattaṭe ..
having observed the evening twilight rites, slept comfortably on its bank.
3.1.16.99
yāmamātrāvaśiṣṭāyāṃ vibhāvaryāṃ mahādhvaniḥ .. 48 ..
When only a single watch of the night remained, a great sound,
3.1.16.100
udabhūtpralayāṃbhodhivīcikolāhalopamaḥ ..
resembling the roar of the waves of the ocean of cosmic dissolution, arose.
3.1.16.101
tena śabdena mahatā kakṣīvānpratyabudhyata .. 49 ..
At that tremendous sound, Kakṣīvat awoke.
3.1.16.102
tatastu svanayo nāma rājā sānucaro balī ..
Then the powerful king named Svanaya, accompanied by his attendants,
3.1.16.103
mṛgayākautukī tatra madhurāpatirāyayau .. 3.1.16.50 ..
fond of hunting, the ruler of Madhurā, arrived there.

3.1.16.105
anyānmṛgaviśeṣāṃśca sa rājā nyavadhīccharaiḥ .. 851 ..
and other kinds of game, the king killed them with his arrows.
3.1.16.106
sāmātyo mṛgayāsakto rathavājigajairyutaḥ ..
Accompanied by his ministers, intent on hunting, surrounded by chariots, horses, and elephants,

and accompanied by soldiers, he approached the vicinity of Agastyatīrtha.
3.1.16.108
sa rājā mṛgayāśrāṃtaḥ śrāṃtasainikasaṃvṛtaḥ ..
The king, exhausted from the hunt and surrounded by tired soldiers,
3.1.16.109
tattīrthatīraprāṃteṣu niṣasāda mahīpatiḥ .. 53 ..
the lord of the earth sat down on the edges of the bank of that sacred ford.
3.1.16.110
tataḥ prabhāte vimale kakṣī vānmunisattamaḥ ..
Then, in the clear dawn, Kakṣīvat, the best of sages,
3.1.16.111
agastyatīrthe snātvā'sau saṃdhyāṃ pūrvāmupāsya ca .. 54 ..
having bathed in Agastyatīrtha and performed the morning twilight worship,
3.1.16.112
tasya tīre japanmatrāṃstasthau niyamasaṃyutaḥ ..
stood on its bank reciting mantras, observing his vows.
3.1.16.113
atrāṃtare tīrthavarādgaja eko viniryayau .. 55 ..

caturdaṃto mahākāyaḥ kailāsa iva mūrtimān ..
having four tusks, a colossal body, like Kailāsa embodied.
3.1.16.115
sa samutthāya tattīrthādagātkakṣīvadaṃtikam .. 56 ..
Rising from that sacred ford, it went into the presence of Kakṣīvat.
3.1.16.116
tamāgatamudaṃkokta lakṣaṇairupalakṣitam ..
Observing that it had arrived, endowed with the characteristics stated by Udaṅka,
3.1.16.117
tadā nirīkṣya kakṣīvānāroḍhuṃ snānamātanot .. 57 ..
Kakṣīvat then performed a bath in order to mount it.
3.1.16.118
namaskṛtya ca tattīrthaṃ ślāghamāno muhurmuhuḥ ..
Having bowed to that sacred ford and praised it again and again,

Kakṣīvat mounted the great four-tusked elephant.
3.1.16.120
āruhya taṃ caturdaṃtaṃ rajatācalasaṃnibham ..
Having mounted that four-tusked elephant resembling the silver mountain,
3.1.16.121
svanayasya purīmeva kakṣīvāngaṃtumaicchata .. 59 ..
Kakṣīvat desired to go to the city of Svanaya itself.
3.1.16.122
tamārūḍhaṃ caturdaṃtaṃ śvetadaṃtāvalottamam ..
Seeing him mounted upon that four-tusked elephant, the foremost of white-tusked beasts,
3.1.16.123
sa vīkṣya niścikāyainaṃ kakṣīvāniti bhūpatiḥ .. 3.1.16.60 ..
the king made sure, ‘This is Kakṣīvat.’

With a pleased heart, the king approached near to him.

sudarśanaḥ samādiṣṭaḥ svanayena nṛpeṇa saḥ .. 73 ..
That Sudarśana, instructed by King Svanaya,
3.1.16.153
mahatyā senayā sārdhaṃ prayayau vedakānanam ..
went forth to the Vedāraṇya forest accompanied by a vast army.
3.1.16.154
tatroṭaje samāsīna taṃ dīrghatamasaṃ munim .. 74 ..
There, the sage Dīrghatamas seated in a leaf-hut,
3.1.16.155
tapaścaratamāsīnaṃ dhyāyanvedāṭavī patim ..
seated practicing austerity, meditating upon the Lord of the Vedāraṇya forest—
3.1.16.156
purohito dadarśātha japaṃtaṃ maṃtramuttamam .. 75 ..
the family priest then saw him reciting the supreme mantra.
3.1.16.157
praṇāmamakarottasmai munaye sa sudarśanaḥ ..
Sudarśana bowed down to that sage,
3.1.16.158
uvāca dīrghatamasaṃ muniṃ prahlādayanniva .. 76 .. ..
and spoke to the sage Dīrghatamas as if gladdening him:
3.1.16.159
.. sudarśana uvāca .. ..
Sudarśana said:
3.1.16.160
kaccitte kuśalaṃ brahmankaccitte vardhate tapaḥ ..
"Is all well with you, O brahmin? Does your austerity prosper?
3.1.16.161
āśrame kuśalaṃ kaccitkacciddharme sukhaṃ vada .. 77 ..
Is it well in the hermitage? Tell me, is there ease in dharma?"
3.1.16.162
pṛṣṭaḥ sudarśanenaivaṃ munirdīrghatamāstadā ..
Questioned thus by Sudarśana, the sage Dīrghatamas then,
3.1.16.163
sudarśanamuvācedamarghyādividhipūrvakam .. 78 ..
after performing the rites of offering water and respect, said this to Sudarśana:
3.1.16.164
.. dīrghatamā uvāca .. ..
Dīrghatamas said:
3.1.16.165
sarvatra kuśalaṃ brahmansudarśana mahāmate ..
"All is well everywhere, O noble-minded brahmin Sudarśana.
3.1.16.166
mama vedāṭavīnāthakṛpayā nāśubhaṃ kvacit.. 79 ..
By the grace of the Lord of the Vedāraṇya forest, there is nothing inauspicious anywhere.
3.1.16.167
tavāpi kuśalaṃ brahmankiṃ sukhāgamanaṃ tathā ..
Is it well with you also, O brahmin? Was your journey comfortable?
3.1.16.168
kiṃvā''gamanakāryaṃ te sudarśana mamāśrame .. 3.1.16.80 ...
What is the purpose of your coming to my hermitage, O Sudarśana?
3.1.16.169
svanayasya purodhāstvaṃ khalu vedavidāṃvaraḥ ..
You are the family priest of Svanaya, indeed the foremost of knowers of the Veda.
3.1.16.170
taṃ vihāya mahārāja madhurāpuravāsinam .. 81 ..
Leaving that great king, who dwells in the city of Madhurā,
3.1.16.171
mahatyā senayā sārdhaṃ kimarthaṃ tvamihāgataḥ ..
for what purpose have you come here with a large army?"
3.1.16.172
ityukto dīrghatamasā tadānīṃ sa sudarśanaḥ .. 82 ..
Addressed thus by Dīrghatamas, that Sudarśana then
3.1.16.173
uvāca taṃ mahātmānaṃ muniṃ jvalitatejasam ..
spoke to that great-souled sage of blazing splendor:
3.1.16.174
sarvatra me sukhaṃ brahmanbhavataḥ kṛpayā sadā .. 83 ..
"It is well with me everywhere, O brahmin, always by your grace.
3.1.16.175
bhagavansva nayo rājā sāṣṭāṃgaṃ praṇipatya tu..
Revered sir, King Svanaya, having bowed down with eight limbs,
3.1.16.176
tvāṃ prāha praśritaṃ vākyaṃ manmukhena śṛṇuṣva tat .. 84 ..
has spoken humble words to you; hear them through my mouth:
3.1.16.177
.. svanaya uvāca .. ..
Svanaya said:
3.1.16.178
kakṣīvāṃste suto brahma ngaṃdhamādanaparvate ..
'Your son Kakṣīvant, O brahmin, is now on Mount Gandhamādana,
3.1.16.179
snānaṃ kurvannagastyasya tīrthe saṃprati vartate .. 85 ..
taking his ritual bath in the sacred ford of Agastya.
3.1.16.180
tasya rūpaṃ tapo dharmamācārānvaidikāṃstathā ..
Recognizing in your son such beauty, austerity, dharma,
3.1.16.181
vedaśāstrapravīṇatvamābhi jātyaṃ ca tādṛśam .. 86 ..
Vedic conduct, mastery of the Vedas and treatises,
3.1.16.182
lokottaramidaṃ sarvaṃ vijñāya tava naṃdane ..
and high birth, all of which are extraordinary in this world,
3.1.16.183
manoramāṃ sutāṃ tasmai dātumicchāmyahaṃ mune .. 87 ..
I wish to give him my daughter Manoramā, O sage.
3.1.16.184
mṛgayākautukī cāhaṃ gaṃdhamādanaparvatam ..
And I, eager for the hunt, have come to Mount Gandhamādana,
3.1.16.185
āgato muniśārdūla vartte yuṣmatsutāṃtike ..88..
O tiger among sages, and am in the presence of your son.
3.1.16.186
pitranujñāṃ vinā nāhamudvaheyaṃ sutāṃ tava ..
[He told me:] "Without my father's permission, I cannot marry your daughter."
3.1.16.187
iti brūte tava sutaḥ kakṣīvānmunisa ttama ..89..
“Thus speaks your son Kakṣīvat, O best of sages:
3.1.16.188
tadbhāvāṃ matsutāṃ tasmai dātuṃ me'nugrahaṃ kuru ..
‘Therefore, show me your grace by giving your daughter to him!’
3.1.16.189
praiṣayaṃ ca samīpaṃ te senayā ca sudarśanam .. 3.1.16.90 ..
And I have sent Sudarśana to your presence with an army.”
3.1.16.190
.. sudarśana uvāca ....
Sudarśana said:
3.1.16.191
iti māṃ bhagavanrājā prāhiṇottava sannidhim..
“Thus, O venerable one, the king sent me into your presence.
3.1.16.192
tadbhavānanumanyasva rājñastasya cikīrṣitam .. 91 ..
Therefore, grant your consent to that king’s desire.”
3.1.16.193
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
3.1.16.194
ityuktvā virarāmātha svanayasya purohitaḥ ..
Having spoken thus, Svanaya's family priest fell silent.
3.1.16.195
tato dīrghatamāḥ prāha svanayasya purohitam .. 92 ..
Then Dīrghatamas said to Svanaya's family priest:
3.1.16.196
.. dīrghatamā uvāca .. ..
Dīrghatamas said:
3.1.16.197
sudarśana bhavatvevaṃ kathitaṃ svanayena yat ..
“Sudarśana, let it be just so as was spoken by Svanaya!
3.1.16.198
mamābhīṣṭatamaṃ hyetatpāṇigrahaṇamaṃgalam .. 93 ..
Indeed, this auspicious marriage is most desirable to me.
3.1.16.199
āgamiṣyāmyahaṃ vipra gandhamādanaparvatam ..
I shall come, O brahmin, to Mount Gandhamādana.”
3.1.16.200
ityuktvā sa munirviprā mahādīrghatamā muniḥ .. 94 ..
