Indeed, how the bridge was constructed across the abode of Varuṇa by Rāma,
3.1.2.8

that I will explain to you, O eminent sages.

went to the bank of the Pampā, filled with grief and bewilderment.
3.1.2.15
dṛṣṭavānvānaraṃ tatra kaṃciddaśarathātmajaḥ ..
There the son of Daśaratha saw a certain monkey.

Then, questioned by Rāghava: “Who are you?”
3.1.2.19
sopi vijñāpayāmāsa rāghavāya mahātmane ..
that monkey also made known to the great-souled Rāghava:
3.1.2.20
ahaṃ sugrīvasacivo hanūmā nnāma vānaraḥ .. 9 ..
“I am the monkey named Hanūmān, the minister of Sugrīva.
3.1.2.21
tena ca prerito'bhyāgāṃ yuvābhyāṃ sakhyamicchatā ..
And dispatched by him, who desires alliance with you two, I have come.
3.1.2.22
āgacchataṃ tadbhadraṃ vāṃ sugrīvāṃtikamāśu vai .. 3.1.2.10 ..
Therefore come quickly to Sugrīva; may good fortune be yours.”

Saying “So be it,” that Rāma went with him, O best of sages,
3.1.2.24
sugrīvāṃtikamāgapya sakhyaṃ cakre'gnisākṣikam .. 11 ..
and approaching Sugrīva, made friendship witnessed by fire.
3.1.2.25
pratijajñe'tha rāmo'pi tasmai vālivadhaṃ prati ..
Then Rāma also promised him the slaying of Vālin,
3.1.2.26
sugrīvaścāpi vai dehyāḥ punarānayanaṃ dvijāḥ .. 12 ..
and Sugrīva [promised] the bringing back of Vaidehī, O twice-born.
3.1.2.27
ityevaṃ samayaṃ kṛtvā viśvāsya ca parasparam ..
Having thus made an agreement and inspired trust in each other,
3.1.2.28
mudā paramayā yuktau nareśvarakapīśvarau ..13..
endowed with supreme joy, the lord of men and the lord of monkeys,
3.1.2.29
āsāte brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhā ṛṣyamūkagirau tathā ..
stayed on Mount Ṛṣyamūka, O best of brahmins.
3.1.2.30

And to inspire confidence in Sugrīva, the body of Dundubhi
3.1.2.31
pādāṃguṣṭhena cikṣepa rāghavo bahuyojanam ..
Rāghava swiftly cast away for many a yojana with his big toe.
3.1.2.32
saptatālā vinirbhinnā rāghaveṇa mahātmanā .. 15 ..
Seven palmyra trees were pierced right through by the great-souled Rāghava.
3.1.2.33
tataḥ prītamanā vīraḥ sugrīvo rāmamabravīt ..
Then, delighted in mind, the heroic Sugrīva said to Rāma:
3.1.2.34
iṃdrādidevatābhyo'pi nāsti rāghava me bhayam.. 16 ..
“I have no fear even from Indra and the other gods, O Rāghava,
3.1.2.35
bhavānmitraṃ mayā labdho yasmādati parākramaḥ ..
since I have obtained you, possessing great prowess, as a friend.
3.1.2.36
ahaṃ laṃkeśvaraṃ hatvā bhāryāmānayitāsmi te .. 17 ..
Having slain the lord of Laṅkā, I will bring back your wife.”

Then, accompanied by Sugrīva, the mighty Rāmacandra,
3.1.2.38
salakṣmaṇo yayau tūrṇaṃ kiṣkiṃdhāṃ vālipālitām .. 18 ..
along with Lakṣmaṇa, went swiftly to Kiṣkindhā, ruled by Vālin.
3.1.2.39
tato jagarja sugrīvo vālyāgamanakāṃkṣayā ..
Then Sugrīva roared, desiring the arrival of Vālin.
3.1.2.40
amṛṣyamāṇo vālī ca garjitaṃ svānujasya vai.. .. 19 ..
And Vālin, unable to tolerate the roar of his younger brother,
3.1.2.41
aṃtaḥpurādviniṣkramya yuyudhe'varajena saḥ ..
came forth from the inner apartments and fought with his younger brother.
3.1.2.42
vālimuṣṭiprahāreṇa tāḍito bhṛśavihvalaḥ .. 3.1.2.20 ..
Struck by the blows of Vālin's fists, intensely distressed,

sugrīvo nirgatastūrṇaṃ yatra rāmo mahābalaḥ ..
Sugrīva swiftly fled to where the mighty Rāma was.
3.1.2.44
tato rāmo mahābāhussugrīvasya śirodhare .. 21 ..
Then the mighty-armed Rāma, on Sugrīva's neck,
3.1.2.45
latāmābadhya cihnaṃ tu yuddhāyācodayattadā ..
bound a creeper as a mark, and then urged him to battle.
3.1.2.46
garjitena samāhūya sugrīvo vālinaṃ punaḥ .. 22 ..
Having summoned Vālin again with a roar,
3.1.2.47
rāmapreraṇayā tena bāhuyuddhamathākarot ..
Sugrīva, at Rāma's instigation, then engaged in hand-to-hand combat with him.
3.1.2.48
tato vālinamājaghne śareṇaikena rāghavaḥ .. 23 ..
Then Rāghava struck Vālin with a single arrow.
3.1.2.49
hate vālini sugrīvaḥ kiṣkiṃdhāṃ pratyapadyata ..
When Vālin was slain, Sugrīva gained Kiṣkindhā.
3.1.2.50
tato varṣāsvatītāsu sugrīvo vānarādhipaḥ .. 24 ..
Then, when the rainy season had passed, Sugrīva, the king of monkeys,
3.1.2.51
sītāmānayituṃ tūrṇaṃ vānarāṇāṃ mahācamūm ..
taking a great army of monkeys to bring back Sītā quickly,
3.1.2.52
samādāya samāgacchadaṃtikaṃ nṛpaputrayoḥ .. 25 ..
came into the presence of the two prince-brothers.
3.1.2.53
prasthāpayāmāsa kapīnsītānveṣaṇakāṃkṣayā ..
He dispatched the monkeys with the desire of searching for Sītā.
3.1.2.54
viditāyāṃ tu vaidehyā laṃkāyāṃ vāyusūnunā .. 26 ..
When Vaidehī had been discovered in Laṅkā by the son of the wind-god,
3.1.2.55
datte cūḍāmaṇau cāpi rāghavo harṣaśokavān..
and the crest-jewel was delivered, Rāghava felt both joy and sorrow.
3.1.2.56
sugrīveṇānujenāpi vāyuputreṇa dhīmatā .. 27 ..
Accompanied by Sugrīva, his younger brother, the wise son of the wind-god,
3.1.2.57
tathānyaiḥ kapibhiścaiva jāṃbavannalamukhyakaiḥ ..
and other monkeys headed by Jāmbavat and Nala,
3.1.2.58
anvīyamāno rāmo'sau muhūrte'bhijiti dvijāḥ ..28..
that Rāma, followed [by them] at the abhijit muhūrta, O twice-born,
3.1.2.59
vilaṃghya vividhā ndeśānmaheṃdraṃ parvataṃ yayau ..
traversed various regions and reached Mount Mahendra.
3.1.2.60
cakratīrthaṃ tato gatvā nivāsamakarottadā .. 29 ..
Then, having gone to Cakratīrtha, he made his dwelling there.
3.1.2.61
tatraiva tu sa dharmātmā samāgacchadvibhīṣaṇaḥ ..
Right there that righteous Vibhīṣaṇa came,
3.1.2.62
bhrātā vai rākṣaseṃdrasya caturbhiḥ sacivaiḥ saha .. 3.1.2.30 ..
the brother of the king of the rākṣasas, together with four counselors.
3.1.2.63
pratijagrāha rāmastaṃ svāgatena mahātmanā ..
Rāma welcomed him with a noble reception.
3.1.2.64
sugrīvasya tu śaṃkā'bhūtpraṇidhiḥ syādayaṃ tviti .. 31 ..
Sugrīva, however, suspected: “Could this one be a spy?”
3.1.2.65
rāghavastasya ceṣṭābhiḥ samyaksvacaritairhitaiḥ ..
Rāghava, by his gestures and his upright, beneficial conduct,
3.1.2.66
aduṣṭamenaṃ dṛṣṭvaiva tata enamapūjayat .. 32 ..
saw him to be free of malice, and honored him.
3.1.2.67
sarvarākṣasarājye tamabhyaṣiṃcadvibhīṣaṇam ..
He consecrated Vibhīṣaṇa over the whole kingdom of the rākṣasas,
3.1.2.68
cakre ca maṃtripravaraṃ sadṛśaṃ ravisūnunā .. 33 ..
and made him an eminent minister, equal to the son of the sun-god.
3.1.2.69
cakratīrthaṃ samāsādya nivasadraghunaṃdanaḥ ..
Having reached Cakratīrtha, the delight of the Raghu race dwelt [there].
3.1.2.70
ciṃtayanrāghavaḥ śrīmānsugrīvādīnabhāṣata .. 34 ..
Reflecting, the glorious Rāghava spoke to Sugrīva and the others,
3.1.2.71
madhye vānaramu khyānāṃ prāptakālamidaṃ vacaḥ ..
these timely words in the midst of the monkey chiefs:
3.1.2.72
upāyaḥ ko nu bhavatāmetatsāgaralaṃghane .. 35 ..
“What means do you have for crossing this ocean?
3.1.2.73
iyaṃ ca mahatī senā sāgaraścāpi dustaraḥ ..
This army is vast, and the ocean is hard to cross.
3.1.2.74
aṃbhorāśirayaṃ nīlaścaṃcalormmisamākulaḥ .. 36 ..
This blue reservoir of waters is agitated with restless waves,
3.1.2.75
udyanmatsyo mahānakraśaṃkhaśuktisamākulaḥ ..
thronged with leaping fish, huge crocodiles, conches, and pearl-oysters,
3.1.2.76
kvacidaurvānalākrāṃtaḥ phenavānatibhīṣaṇaḥ .. .. 37 ..
in places engulfed by submarine fire, foamy, and exceedingly terrifying.”
3.1.2.77
prakṛṣṭapavanākṛṣṭanīlameghasamanvitaḥ ..
covered with dark clouds drawn by powerful winds,
3.1.2.78
pralayāṃbhodharārāvaḥ sāravānaniloddhataḥ .. 38 ..
roaring like the clouds of doomsday, full of noise, tossed up by the gale: // 38
3.1.2.79
kathaṃ sāgaramakṣobhyaṃ tarāmo varuṇā layam ..
“How shall we cross the unshakeable ocean, the abode of Varuṇa,
3.1.2.80
sainyaiḥ parivṛtāḥ sarve vānarāṇāṃ mahaujasām .. 39 ..
all surrounded by the armies of the mighty monkeys? // 39
3.1.2.81
upāyairadhigacchāmo yathā nadanadīpatim ..
By what means might we reach the lord of rivers and streams?
3.1.2.82
kathaṃ tarāmaḥ sahasā sasainyā varuṇālayam .. 3.1.2.40 ..
How can we, with the whole army, quickly cross the abode of Varuṇa, // 3.1.2.40
3.1.2.83
śatayojanamāyātaṃ manasāpi durāsadam ..
stretching for a hundred yojanas, difficult even for the mind to reach?
3.1.2.84
ato nu vighnā bahavaḥ kathaṃ prāpyā ca maithilī .. 41 ..
Indeed, there are many obstacles ahead; how is the princess of Mithilā to be regained? // 41
3.1.2.85
kaṣṭātkaṣṭataraṃ prāptā vayamadya nirāśrayāḥ ..
From hardship we have reached greater hardship today, left without shelter,
3.1.2.86
mahājale mahāvāte samudre hi nirāśraye .. 42 ..
before the ocean of great waters and great winds, offering no refuge. // 42
3.1.2.87
upāyaṃ kaṃ vidhāsyāmastaraṇārthaṃ vanaukasām ..
What means shall we devise for the forest-dwellers to cross?
3.1.2.88
rājyādbhraṣṭo vanaṃ prāpto hṛtā sītā mṛtaḥ pitā .. 43 ..
Fallen from kingship, arrived in the forest, Sītā abducted, father dead— // 43
3.1.2.89
ito'pi duḥsahaṃ duḥkhaṃ yatsāgaravilaṃghanam ..
even more intolerable than these is the grief of crossing the ocean!
3.1.2.90
dhigdhiggarjitamaṃbhodhe dhigetāṃ vārirāśitām .. 44 ..
Fie, fie on the roar of the ocean! Fie on this mass of water! // 44
3.1.2.91
kathaṃ tadvacanaṃ mithyā maharṣeḥ kumbhajanmanaḥ ..
How could those words of the great seer born from a jar prove false?
3.1.2.92
hatvā tvaṃ rāvaṇaṃ pāpaṃ pavitre gaṃdhamādane ..
That which he said: ‘Having slain the wicked Rāvaṇa, go swiftly
3.1.2.93
pāpopaśamanāyāśu gacchasveti yadīritam ..45..
to pure Gandhamādana for the expiation of your sin’?” // 45
3.1.2.94
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
3.1.2.95
iti rāmavacaḥ śrutvā sugrīvapramukhāstadā .. 46 ..
Hearing these words of Rāma, Sugrīva and the other leaders then // 46
3.1.2.96
ūcuḥ prāṃjalayaḥ saṃrme rāghavaṃ taṃ mahābalam ..
spoke with joined palms to that mighty descendant of Raghu:
3.1.2.97
naubhirenaṃ tariṣyāmaḥ plavaiśca vividhairiti .. 47 ..
“We shall cross it with boats and with various rafts.” // 47
3.1.2.98
madhye vānarakoṭīnāṃ tadovāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ ..
Then, in the midst of the tens of millions of monkeys, Vibhīṣaṇa spoke:
3.1.2.99
samudraṃ rāghavo rājā śaraṇaṃ gantumarhati .. 48 ..
“King Rāghava ought to seek refuge with the ocean. // 48
3.1.2.100
khanitaḥ sāgaraireṣa samudro varuṇālayaḥ ..
This ocean, the abode of Varuṇa, was dug out by the sons of Sagara;
3.1.2.101
kartumarhati rāmasya tajjñāteḥ kāryamaṃbudhiḥ .. 49 ..
the sea ought to perform this service for Rāma, its kinsman.” // 49
3.1.2.102
vibhīṣaṇenaivamukto rākṣasena vipaścitā ..
Addressed thus by Vibhīṣaṇa, the wise rākṣasa,
3.1.2.103
sāṃtvayanrāghavaḥ sarvānvānarānidamabravīt .. 3.1.2.50 ..
Rāghava consoled all the monkeys and said this: // 3.1.2.50
3.1.2.104
śatayojana vistāramaśaktāḥ sarvavānarāḥ ..
“Across an expanse of a hundred yojanas, all the monkeys are unable
3.1.2.105
tartuṃ plavoḍupairenaṃ samudramatibhīṣaṇam .. 51 ..
to cross this most terrifying ocean on rafts and floats. // 51
3.1.2.106
nāvo na saṃti senāyā bahvyā vānarapuṃgavāḥ ..
There are not enough boats for so vast an army, O bull-like monkeys!
3.1.2.107
vaṇijāmupaghātaṃ ca kathamasmadvidhaścaret .. 52 ..
And how could one like us cause ruin to merchants? // 52
3.1.2.108
vistīrṇaṃ caiva naḥ sainyaṃ hanyācchidreṣu vā paraḥ ..
Moreover, our army is widespread, and the enemy might strike us when vulnerable;
3.1.2.109
plavoḍupapratāro'to naivātra mama rocate .. 53 ..
therefore crossing by rafts and floats does not please me at all. // 53
3.1.2.110
vibhīṣeṇoktame vedaṃ modate mama vānarāḥ ..
What Vibhīṣaṇa has said pleases me, O monkeys.
3.1.2.111
ahaṃ tvimaṃ jalanidhimupāsye mārgasiddhaye .. 54 ..
I shall attend upon this ocean to obtain a path. // 54
3.1.2.112
no ceddarśayitā mārgaṃ dhakṣyāmyenamahaṃ tadā ..
If it does not show the path, then I shall burn it
3.1.2.113
mahāstrairapratihatairatyagnipavanojjvalaiḥ .. 55 ..
with irresistible great weapons blazing with extreme fire and wind.” // 55
3.1.2.114
ityuktvā sahasaumitrirupaspṛśyātha rāghavaḥ ..
Having spoken thus, Rāghava together with the son of Sumitrā sipped water,
3.1.2.115
pratiśiśye jalanidhiṃ vidhivatkuśasaṃstare .. 56 ..
and lay facing the ocean according to the rule upon a bed of kuśa grass. // 56
3.1.2.116
tadā rāmaḥ kuśā stīrṇe tīre nadanadīpateḥ ..
Then, on the shore of the lord of rivers and streams, spread with kuśa grass,
3.1.2.117
saṃviveśa mahābāhurvedyāmiva hutāśanaḥ .. 57 ..
the mighty-armed Rāma lay down like the sacrificial fire upon the altar. // 57
3.1.2.118
śeṣabhoganibhaṃ bāhumupadhāya raghūdvahaḥ ..
Pillowing his head upon his arm resembling the coil of Śeṣa,
3.1.2.119
dakṣiṇo dakṣiṇaṃ bāhumupāste makarālayam .. 58 ..
the capable descendant of Raghu, with his right arm, waited upon the abode of sea-monsters. // 58
3.1.2.120
tasya rāmasya suptasya kuśāstīrṇe mahītale ..
While Rāma slept on the earth spread with kuśa grass,
3.1.2.121
niyamādapramattasya niśāstisro'ticakramuḥ .. 59 ..
intent on his vow, three nights passed by. // 59
3.1.2.122
sa trirātroṣitastatra nayajño dharmatatparaḥ ..
Having fasted there for three nights, knowing prudent policy and devoted to dharma,
3.1.2.123
upāstesma tadā rāmaḥ sāgaraṃ mārgasiddhaye .. 3.1.2.60 ..
Rāma then waited upon the ocean to obtain a path. // 3.1.2.60
3.1.2.124
na ca darśayate mandastadā rāmasya sāgaraḥ ..
Yet the dull-witted ocean did not show itself to Rāma then,
3.1.2.125
prayatenāpi rāmeṇa yathārhamapi pūjitaḥ .. 61 ..
even though worshiped by the restrained Rāma as was fitting. // 61
3.1.2.126
tathāpi sāgaro rāmaṃ na darśayati cātmanaḥ ..
Even so, the ocean did not show its form to Rāma.
3.1.2.127
samudrāya tataḥ kruddho rāmo raktāṃtalocanaḥ .. 62 ..
Then, enraged at the ocean, his eyes reddish at the corners, // 62
3.1.2.128
samīpavartinaṃ cedaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ pratyabhāṣata ..
Rāma spoke thus to Lakṣmaṇa who stood nearby:
3.1.2.129
adya madbāṇanirbhinnairmakarairvaruṇālayam .. 63 ..
“Today, with sea-monsters pierced by my arrows, the abode of Varuṇa // 63
3.1.2.130
niruddhatoyaṃ saumitre kariṣyāmi kṣaṇādaham ..
I shall make waterless in an instant, O son of Sumitrā!
3.1.2.131
saśaṃkhaśuktājālaṃ hi samīnamakaraṃ śanaiḥ .. 64 ..
With its nets of conches and oyster shells, along with its fishes and monsters, slowly // 64
3.1.2.132
adya bāṇairamoghāstrairvāridhiṃ pariśoṣaye ..
today I shall dry up the ocean with unfailing arrows.
3.1.2.133
kṣamayā hi samāyuktaṃ māmayaṃ makarālayaḥ .. 69 ..
Endowed as I am with forbearance, this abode of sea-monsters // 69
3.1.2.134
asamarthaṃ vijānāti dhikkṣamāmīdṛśe jane ..
deems me powerless; fie on forbearance towards such a being!
3.1.2.135
na darśayati sāmnā me sāgaro rūpamātmanaḥ .. 66 ..
The ocean does not show its form to me through conciliation. // 66
3.1.2.136
cāpamānaya saumitre śarāṃścāśīviṣopamān..
Bring my bow, O son of Sumitrā, and arrows resembling venomous serpents!”
3.1.2.137
sāgaraṃ śoṣayiṣyāmi padbhyāṃ yāṃtu plavaṃgamāḥ .. 67 ..
"I will dry up the ocean; let the monkeys go on foot! .. 67 ..
3.1.2.138
enaṃ laṃghitamaryādaṃ sahasrormisamākulam ..
This [ocean] has transgressed its bounds, agitated with thousands of waves;
3.1.2.139
nirmaryādaṃ kariṣyāmi sāyakairvaruṇālayam .. 68 ..
I will strip the abode of Varuṇa of its bounds with arrows! .. 68 ..
3.1.2.140
mahārṇavaṃ śoṣayiṣye mahādānavasaṃkulam ..
I will dry up the great ocean crowded with great Dānavas,
3.1.2.141
mahāmakaranakrāḍhyaṃ mahāvīcisamākulam .. 69 ..
abounding in great sea-monsters and crocodiles, turbulent with immense waves." .. 69 ..
3.1.2.142
evamuktvā dhanuṣpāṇiḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ..
Having spoken thus, bow in hand, his eyes agitated with wrath,
3.1.2.143
rāmo babhūva durdharṣastripuraghno yathā śivaḥ .. 3.1.2.70 ..
Rāma became invincible, like Śiva, the destroyer of Tripura. .. 3.1.2.70 ..
3.1.2.144
ākṛṣya cāpaṃ kopena kampayitvā śarairjagat ..
Drawing his bow in anger, making the world tremble with his arrows,
3.1.2.145
mumoca viśikhānugrāṃstripureṣu yathā bhavaḥ .. 71 ..
he released fierce shafts, just as Bhava [shot arrows] against the three cities. .. 71 ..
3.1.2.146
dīptā bāṇāśca ye ghorā bhāsayanto diśo daśa ..
Those blazing and terrible arrows, illuminating the ten directions,
3.1.2.147
prāviśanvāridhestoyaṃ dṛptadānavasaṃkulam ..72..
entered the water of the ocean filled with arrogant Dānavas. .. 72 ..
3.1.2.148
samudrastu tato bhīto vepamānaḥ kṛtāṃjaliḥ ..
Then the ocean, terrified, trembling, with folded hands,
3.1.2.149
ananyaśaraṇo viprāḥ pātā lātsvayamutthitaḥ..73..
having no other refuge, O brahmins, rose up himself from Pātāla. .. 73 ..
3.1.2.150
śaraṇaṃ rāghavaṃ bheje kaivalyapadakāraṇam ..
