Seizing those boys by force while they cried out,
3.1.22.118

the cruel-hearted Duṣpaṇya submerged them in the neck-deep water of the lake.

were unable to go to the city and wandered right there out of childishness.
3.1.22.125

Hearing their names called from afar by their kinsmen,

all five boys called back in response.
3.1.22.127
tatastatpitaraḥ śrutvā tatrāgatyasarastaṭe .. 62 ..
Then their fathers, hearing them, came to the lake shore,
3.1.22.128
putrāndṛṣṭvā tu saprāṇānpraharṣamatulaṃ gatāḥ ..
and seeing their sons alive, experienced incomparable joy.
3.1.22.129

the boys reported the wicked deed of Duṣpaṇya to their kinsmen.
3.1.22.131

and reported the deed of Duṣpaṇya as told by the five [boys].

Then the king summoned Paśumant, the foremost merchant,
3.1.22.134

and spoke these words while the citizens were listening:
3.1.22.135
.. rājovāca .. ..
The king said:
3.1.22.136
duṣpaṇyanāmā paśumanbahuprajamidaṃ puram .. 66 ..

Just now, indeed, he plunged these innocent children into the water;

and by good fortune they have returned alive to the city.
3.1.22.140

The matter having come to this, tell [me] now: what should be done?
3.1.22.141
adya tvāmeva pṛcchāmi yatastvaṃ dharmatatparaḥ ..
Today I ask you yourself, since you are devoted to dharma.”
3.1.22.142
ityuktaḥ paśumānrājñā dharmajño yuktamabravīt .. 69 ..
Thus addressed by the king, Paśumant, who knew dharma, spoke fitting words:
3.1.22.143
.. paśumānuvāca .. ..
Paśumant said:
3.1.22.144
puraṃ niḥśeṣitaṃ yena vadhamevāyamarhati ..
“He who has emptied the city deserves nothing less than death.
3.1.22.145
na hyatra viṣaye kiṃcitpraṣṭavyaṃ vidyate nṛpa .. 3.1.22.70 ..
Indeed, in this matter, there is nothing at all to be questioned, O King.”

"For this is no son of mine, but a foe who commits dreadful sins;
3.1.22.147

indeed, I see no expiation for him by whom the city was laid waste.
3.1.22.148
vadhyatāmeva duṣṭātmā satyameva bravīmyaham ..
Let the wicked soul be put to death; I speak the very truth."
3.1.22.149
śrutvā paśumato vākyaṃ nāgarāḥ sarva eva hi .. 72 ..
Having heard the words of Paśumān, all the citizens
3.1.22.150
vaṇigvaraṃ ślāghamānā rājānamidamūcire ..
praised the excellent merchant and spoke thus to the king:
3.1.22.151
na vadhyatāmayaṃ duṣṭastūṣṇīṃ nirvāsyatāṃ purāt .. 73 ..
"Let not this wicked one be put to death; let him quietly be banished from the city."
3.1.22.152
tataḥ sa rājā duṣpaṇyaṃ samāhūyedamabravīt ..
Then the king summoned Duṣpaṇya and spoke thus:
3.1.22.153
asmāddeśādbhavāñchīghraṃ duṣṭātmangaccha sāṃpratam .. 74 ..
"You wicked soul, depart swiftly from this country at once!
3.1.22.154
yadi tiṣṭhestvamatraiva daṇḍayeyaṃ vadhena vai ..
If you remain right here, I shall certainly punish you with death."
3.1.22.155
iti rājñā vinirbhartsya dūtairnirvāsitaḥ purāt .. 75 ..
Having been thus reprimanded by the king and banished from the city by messengers,
3.1.22.156
duṣpaṇyastvatha taṃ deśaṃ parityajya bhayānvitaḥ ..
Duṣpaṇya, abandoning that country in fear,
3.1.22.157
munimaṃḍalasaṃbādhaṃ vanameva yayau tadā .. 76 ..
then went to a forest crowded with assemblies of sages.
3.1.22.158
tatrāpyekaṃ munisutaṃ sa toyeṣu nyamajjayat ..
Even there, he drowned a son of a sage in the water.
3.1.22.159
kelyarthamāgatā dṛṣṭvā muniputrā mṛtaṃ śiśum .. 77 ..
The sons of the sages, having come to play and seeing the dead child,
3.1.22.160
tatpitre kathayāmāsurabhyetya bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ ..
approached his father and told him, deeply grieved.
3.1.22.161
tata ugraśravāḥ śrutvā tebhyaḥ putraṃ jale mṛtam .. 78 ..
Then Ugraśravas, hearing from them that his son had died in the water,
3.1.22.162
tapomahimnā duṣpa ṇyacaritaṃ tadamanyata ..
perceived through the power of his austerity that it was the deed of Duṣpaṇya.
3.1.22.163
ugraśravāḥ śaśāpainaṃ duṣpaṇyaṃ vaiśyanaṃdanam .. 79 ..
Ugraśravas cursed that Duṣpaṇya, the son of the vaiśya:
3.1.22.164
.. ugraśravā uvāca .. ..
Ugraśravas said:
3.1.22.165
matsutaṃ payasi kṣipya yattvaṃ māritavānasi ..
"Since you have thrown my son into the water and killed him,
3.1.22.166
tavāpi maraṇaṃ bhūyājjala eva nimajjanāt .. 3.1.22.80 ..
may your death also come about by drowning in water!
3.1.22.167
mṛtaśca suciraṃ kālaṃ piśācastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi ..
And when you are dead, you shall become a piśāca for a very long time."
3.1.22.168
iti śāpe śrute sadyo duṣpaṇyaḥ khinnamānasaḥ .. 81 ..
When that curse was heard, Duṣpaṇya, dejected at heart,
3.1.22.169
tadvai vanaṃ parityajya ghoramanyadvanaṃ yayau ..
at once abandoned that forest and went to another, dreadful forest,
3.1.22.170
siṃhādikrūrasatvāḍhyaṃ tasminprāpte vanāṃtaram .. 82 ..
abounding in fierce beasts such as lions. When he reached that other forest,
3.1.22.171
pāṃsuvarṣaṃ mahdvarṣanvṛkṣānāmoṭaya nmuhuḥ ..
a great tempest wind blew, feeling like a thunderbolt's strike,
3.1.22.172
vajraghātasamasparśo vavau jhaṃjhānilo mahān .. 83 ..
raining down a great shower of dust and constantly breaking down trees.
3.1.22.173
vegena gātraṃ bhiṃdantī vṛṣṭiścāsītsuduḥsahā ..
And there was an unbearable rain tearing at his limbs with its velocity.
3.1.22.174
taddṛṣṭvā sa tu duṣpaṇyaściṃtayanbhṛśaduḥ khitaḥ .. 84 ..
Seeing that, Duṣpaṇya, reflecting and sorely distressed,
3.1.22.175
mṛtaṃ śuṣkaṃ mahākāyaṃ gajamekamapaśyata ..
beheld a dead, dried-up elephant of enormous size.
3.1.22.176
mahāvātaṃ mahāvarṣaṃ tadā soḍhumaśaknuvan .. 85 ..
Unable then to endure the great wind and the heavy downpour,
3.1.22.177
gajāsyavivareṇaiva viveśodaragahvaram ..
he entered the cavity of its belly through the opening of the elephant's mouth.
3.1.22.178
tasminpraviṣṭamātre tu vṛṣṭirāsītsubhūyasī .. 86 ..
No sooner had he entered than the rain became exceedingly heavy.
3.1.22.179
tato varṣajalaiḥ sarvaiḥ pravāhaḥ sumahānabhūt ..
Then, from all the rainwater, a tremendous flood arose;
3.1.22.180
sa pravāho vane tasminnadī kācidajāyata .. 87 ..
that flood became a kind of river in that forest.
3.1.22.181
atha tairvarṣasalilaiḥ sa gajaḥ pūritodaraḥ ..
Then, with its belly filled by those rainwaters,
3.1.22.182
plavamāno mahāpūre nīraṃdhraḥ samajāyata .. 88 ..
that elephant, floating in the great torrent, became swollen shut.
3.1.22.183
tato nirvivarasyāsya jalapūrṇodarasya ca ..
Then, from the belly of that elephant which had no opening left
3.1.22.184
gajasya jaṭharātso'yaṃ nirgaṃtu na śaśāka ha .. 89 ..
and whose belly was filled with water, he was indeed unable to come out.
3.1.22.185
tataśca vṛṣṭitoyānāṃ pravāho bhīmavegavān ..
And then the torrent of rainwater, possessed of terrifying velocity,
3.1.22.186
udarasthitaduṣpaṇyaṃ samudraṃ prāpayadgajam .. 3.1.22.90 ..
carried the elephant, with Duṣpaṇya inside its belly, to the ocean.
3.1.22.187
duṣpaṇyaḥ salile magnaḥ kṣaṇātprāṇairvyayujyata ..
Duṣpaṇya, submerged in the water, was in an instant deprived of life.

mṛta eva sa duṣpaṇyaḥ piśācatvamavāptavān .. 91 ..

crying out terrifyingly during the dreadful hot seasons.

kalpakoṭisahasrāṇi kalpakoṭiśatāni ca .. 93 ..
for tens of millions of thousands of kalpas, and hundreds of tens of millions of kalpas.
3.1.22.193
sa piśāco mahāduḥkhī nyavasadghorakānane ..
That piśāca lived in the dreadful forest, suffering great misery,

running from one forest to another, and likewise from country to country.

sarvatrānubhavanduḥkhamāyayau daṇḍakānkramāt ..
Experiencing sorrow everywhere, he eventually came to the Daṇḍaka forest.
3.1.22.196
agastyādāśramātpuṇyānnātidūre sa saṃcaran .. 95 ..
Wandering not far from the sacred hermitage of Agastya,
3.1.22.197
nadanbhairavanādaṃ ca vākyamuccairabhāṣata ..
roaring a terrifying roar, he spoke aloud these words:
3.1.22.198
bhobhostapodhanāḥ sarve śṛṇudhvaṃ māmakaṃ vacaḥ .. 96 ..
"O ascetics, listen all of you to my words!
3.1.22.199
bhavanto hi kṛpāvantaḥ sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ ..
For you are compassionate and devoted to the welfare of all beings;
3.1.22.200
kṛpādṛṣṭyānugṛhṇīta māṃ duḥkhairatipīḍitam .. 97 ..
look upon me with a gaze of compassion and favor me, who am exceedingly afflicted by sorrows!
