attained supreme knowledge from Raikva, the best of brahmins.

3.1.26.19
raikvanāmā maharṣistu purā vai gandhamādane .. 8 ..
Long ago on Gandhamādana, a great seer named Raikva,
3.1.26.20
tapassuduścaraṃ kurvannyavasattapasāṃ nidhiḥ ..
a treasury of austerities, lived while performing severe austerity.
3.1.26.21
dīrghakālaṃ tapaḥ kurvansa vai raikvo mahāmuniḥ .. 9 ..
Practicing austerity for a long time, that great sage Raikva
3.1.26.22
tapobalena mahatā dīrghamāyuravāptavān ..
attained a long life by the great power of his austerity.
3.1.26.23
janmanā paṃgurevāsīdraikvanāmā mahāmuniḥ .. 3.1.26.10 ..
The great sage named Raikva was lame from birth.
3.1.26.24
paṃgutvādasamartho'bhūdgaṃtuṃ tīrthānyasau muniḥ ..
Because of lameness, that sage was unable to go to sacred fords.
3.1.26.25
saṃti yāni tu tīrthāni gandhamādanaparvate .. 11 ..
Whatever sacred fords there were on Mount Gandhamādana,
3.1.26.26
tāni gacchati sāmīpyācchakaṭenaiva saṃcaran ..
he would go to them due to their proximity, traveling only by cart.
3.1.26.27
sa yadraikvo munivaro yugvena saha vartate .. 12 ..
Because that Raikva, the excellent sage, remained together with a cart [yugvan],
3.1.26.28
tapasvī vaidikairloke sayugvaityabhidhīyate ..
that ascetic is called Sayugvan in the world by Vedic scholars.
3.1.26.29
yugveti śakaṭaṃ proktaṃ sa tena saha vartate .. 13 ..
A cart is called 'yugvan'; he remained together with it.
3.1.26.30
sa khalvevaṃ muniśreṣṭhaḥ sayugvānāma vai muniḥ ..
That best of sages, the sage named Sayugvan,
3.1.26.31
pūrṇajñānastapastepe gandhamādanaparvate ..14..
possessed of complete knowledge, practiced austerity on Mount Gandhamādana.
3.1.26.32
grīṣme pañcāgnimadhyasthaḥ so'tapyata mahattapaḥ ..
In the hot season, standing amidst five fires, he performed great austerity;
3.1.26.33
varṣāyāṃ kaṇṭhadaghneṣu jaleṣu samavartata .. 15 ..
in the rainy season, he remained in waters reaching up to his throat.
3.1.26.34
tapasā śoṣite gātre pāmā tasya vyajāyata ..
When his body had become emaciated by austerity, a skin disease arose in him;
3.1.26.35
kaṇḍūyata sa pāmānaṃ divārātraṃ munīśvaraḥ .. 16..
day and night the lord of sages scratched the scabies.
3.1.26.36
kaṇḍūyamāna evāyaṃ pāmānaṃ na tapo'tyajat ..
Even while scratching the scabies, he did not abandon his austerity.
3.1.26.37
ajāyata manastvevaṃ tasya sayugvano muneḥ .. 17 ..
Then such a thought arose in the mind of that sage Sayugvan:
3.1.26.38
yamunāyāṃ ca gaṃgāyāṃ gayāyāṃ cādhunaiva hi ..
'Right now indeed, in Yamunā, Gaṅgā, and Gayā—
3.1.26.39
asmiṃstīrthe traye puṇye snātavyaṃ hi mayā tviti .. 18 ..
in this holy triad of sacred fords—a ritual ablution must surely be performed by me.'
3.1.26.40
evaṃ viciṃtya sa muniranyāṃ ciṃtāmathākarot ..
Thinking thus, the sage then had another thought:
3.1.26.41
ahaṃ hi janmanā paṃgurataḥ snānaṃ hi durlabham .. 19 ..
'I am indeed lame from birth; therefore, ritual ablution is difficult to attain.
3.1.26.42
atidūraṃ mayā gantuṃ śakaṭena na śakyate ..
I cannot travel too far by cart.
3.1.26.43
kiṃ karomyadhunetyevaṃ sa vitarkya mahāmatiḥ .. 3.1.26.20 ..
What shall I do now?' Reflecting thus, the great-minded one
3.1.26.44
tīrthatrayeṣu snānārthaṃ kartavyaṃ niścikāya vai ..
determined what was to be done in order to bathe in the triad of sacred fords:
3.1.26.45
aprasahyamanādhṛṣyaṃ vidyate me tapobalam .. 21 ..
'There exists in me the power of austerity, irresistible and unassailable;
3.1.26.46
tenaivāvāhayiṣyāmi taddhi tīrthatrayaṃ tviha ..
by that very power I will summon that triad of sacred fords here.'
3.1.26.47
iti niścitya manasā prāṅmukho niyateṃdriyaḥ .. 22 ..
Deciding this in his mind, facing east with senses restrained,
3.1.26.48
trirācamya ca sayugvāndadhyau kṣaṇamataṃdritaḥ ..
having sipped water three times, Sayugvan meditated for a moment without laxity.
3.1.26.49
tasya maṃtraprabhāvena yamunā sā mahānadī .. 23 ..
By the power of his mantra, that great river Yamunā,
3.1.26.50
gaṃgā ca jahnutanayā gayā sā pāpanāśinī ..
Gaṅgā the daughter of Jahnu, and that sin-destroying Gayā—
3.1.26.51
bhūmiṃ nirbhidya tisropi pātālātsahasotthitāḥ .. 24 ..
all three burst through the earth and suddenly rose up from Pātāla.
3.1.26.52
mānuṣaṃ rūpamāsthāya sayugvānamupetya ca ..
Assuming human forms and approaching Sayugvan,
3.1.26.53
ūcuḥ paramasaṃhṛṣṭā harṣayaṃtyaśca taṃ munim .. 25 ..
they spoke, greatly rejoicing and gladdening that sage: / 25
3.1.26.54
sayugvanraikva bhadraṃ te dhyānādasmādupārama ..
“O Sayugvan Raikva, fortune to you! Cease from this meditation.
3.1.26.55
tvanmaṃtreṇa samākṛṣṭā vayamatra samāgatāḥ .. 26 ..
Drawn by your mantra, we have come here. / 26
3.1.26.56
ki kartavyaṃ tavāsmābhistadvadasva munīśvara ..
What must be done for you by us? Speak that, O lord of sages!”
3.1.26.57
iti tāsāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā sayugvānhi mahāmuniḥ .. 27 ..
Hearing these words of theirs, the great sage Sayugvan / 27
3.1.26.58
dhyānādupāramattūrṇaṃ tāścāpaśyatpuraḥ sthitāḥ ..
quickly ceased from meditation and saw them standing before him.
3.1.26.59
sa tāḥ saṃpūjya vidhivadraikvo vācamabhāṣata .. 28 ..
Having duly honored them, Raikva spoke these words: / 28
3.1.26.60
yamune devi he gaṃge he gaye pāpanāśini ..
“O goddess Yamunā, O Gaṅgā, O Gayā who destroys sin!
3.1.26.61
sannidhānaṃ kurudhvaṃ me gandhamādanaparvate .. 29 ..
Establish your presence for me on Mount Gandhamādana, / 29
3.1.26.62
yatra bhūmiṃ vinirbhidya bhavatya iha nirgatāḥ ..
where you have emerged here, bursting through the earth.
3.1.26.63
tāni puṇyāni tīrthāni bhaveyurvo'bhidhānataḥ .. 3.1.26.30 ..
Let those be holy sacred fords named after you.” / 30
3.1.26.64
sahasāṃtaradhīyaṃta tathāstvityeva tatra tāḥ ..
Saying only “So be it,” they suddenly vanished right there.
3.1.26.65
tadāprabhṛti tīrthāni tāni trīṇyapi bhūtale .. 31 ..
From that time forward, those three sacred fords upon the earth / 31
3.1.26.66
tenatenābhidhānena gīyante sarvadā janaiḥ ..
are always sung of by people under those respective names.
3.1.26.67
yatra bhūmiṃ vinirbhidya yamunā nirgatā tadā .. 32 ..
Where Yamunā then burst through the earth and emerged, / 32
3.1.26.68
yamunātīrthamiti vai tajjanairabhidhīyate ..
that is called Yamunātīrtha by the people.
3.1.26.69
yato vai pṛthivīraṃdhrājjāhnavī sahasotthitā .. 33 ..
From which cleft in the earth Jāhnavī suddenly arose, / 33
3.1.26.70
gaṃgātīrthamiti khyātaṃ talloke pāpanāśanam ..
that is renowned in the world as Gaṅgātīrtha, destroying sin.
3.1.26.71
gayā hi mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ yata āsthāya niryayau .. 34 ..
Where Gayā came forth assuming a human form, / 34
3.1.26.72
tadeva bhūmivivaraṃ gayātīrthaṃ pracakṣate ..
that very opening in the earth they call Gayātīrtha.
3.1.26.73
evametanmahāpuṇyaṃ tīrthatrayamanuttamam .. 35 ..
Thus this triad of exceedingly holy, unsurpassable sacred fords / 35
3.1.26.74
raikvamaṃtraprabhāveṇa pṛthivyāḥ sahasotthitam ..
suddenly arose from the earth by the power of Raikva's mantra.
3.1.26.75
atra tīrthatraye snānaṃ ye kurvaṃti narottamāḥ .. 36 ..
Those best of men who perform ritual ablution in this triad of sacred fords, / 36
3.1.26.76
teṣāmajñānanāśaḥ syājjñānamapyudayaṃ labhet ..
for them there will be the destruction of ignorance, and knowledge will arise.
3.1.26.77
svamaṃtreṇa samākṛṣṭe tatra tīrthatraye muniḥ .. 37 ..
There in that triad of sacred fords drawn by his own mantra, the sage, / 37
3.1.26.78
snānaṃ samācarannityaṃ sa kālānatyavāhayat ..
performing his ritual ablution daily, passed the time.
3.1.26.79
etasminneva kāle tu rājā jānaśrutirmahān .. 38 ..
At that very time, the great king Jānaśruti, / 38
3.1.26.80
putrasaṃjñasya rājarṣeḥ pautro dharmaikatatparaḥ ..
the grandson of the royal seer named Putra, solely devoted to righteousness—
3.1.26.81
deyamannādi sa tadā hyarthibhyaḥ śraddhayaiva yat .. 39 ..
because food and other gifts were then given by him to supplicants with deep faith, / 39
3.1.26.82
tasmādenaṃ najāloke śraddhādeyaṃ pracakṣate ..
therefore in the world people call him “Śraddhādeya” (one who gives with faith).
3.1.26.83
yato bahutaraṃ vākyamannādyasya mahīpateḥ ..3.1.26.40 ..
Because abundant speech regarding food and other provisions of this king / 40
3.1.26.84
arthināṃ kṣudhitānāṃ tu tṛptyarthaṃ vartate gṛhe ..
took place in his house for the satisfaction of hungry supplicants,
3.1.26.85
atoyamarthibhiḥ sarvairbahuvākya itīryate ..41..
therefore he is called “Bahuvākya” (of much speech) by all supplicants. / 41
3.1.26.86
sa vai pautrāyaṇo rājā jānaśrutasuto balī ..
He, King Pautrāyaṇa, the mighty son of Jānaśruta,
3.1.26.87
priyātithirbabhūvāsau bahudāyī tathā'bhavat .. 42 ..
was fond of guests, and likewise he gave abundantly. / 42
3.1.26.88
nagareṣu ca rāṣṭreṣu grāmeṣu ca vaneṣu ca ..
In cities, in realms, in villages, and in forests,
3.1.26.89
catuṣpatheṣu sarveṣu mahāmārgeṣu sarvaśaḥ .. 43 ..
at all crossroads, and everywhere along highways, / 43
3.1.26.90
bahvannapāna saṃyuktaṃ sūpaśākādisaṃyutam ..
he arranged hospitality endowed with abundant food and drink,
3.1.26.91
ātithyaṃ kalpayāmāsa tṛptaye'rthijanasya vai ..44..
accompanied by soups, vegetables, and the like, for the satisfaction of the supplicants. / 44
3.1.26.92
annapānādikaṃ sarvamupayuḍdhvamihārthinaḥ ..
“O supplicants, partake here of all the food, drink, and the rest!”
3.1.26.93
ityasau ghoṣayāmāsa tatra tatra janāspade ..45..
Thus he proclaimed in various human settlements. / 45
3.1.26.94
tasya priyātithereva nṛpasya bahudāyinaḥ ..
Of that very king, fond of guests and generous in giving,
3.1.26.95
arthibhyo dānaśauṃḍasya guṇāḥ sarvatra viśrutāḥ ..46..
ardent in giving to supplicants, the virtues were renowned everywhere. / 46
3.1.26.96
atha pautrāyaṇasyāsya guṇa grāmeṇa vartataḥ ..
Now, as this Pautrāyaṇa lived in a multitude of virtues,
3.1.26.97
devarṣayo mahābhāgāstasyānugrahakāṃkṣiṇaḥ .. 47 ..
the illustrious divine seers, desiring his grace, / 47
3.1.26.98
haṃsarūpaṃ samāsthāya nidāghasamaye niśi ..
assumed the form of swans at night during the hot season,
3.1.26.99
ramaṇīyāṃ vidhāyāśu śreṇīmākāśamāgataḥ .. 49 ..
and, having swiftly formed a delightful flock, came into the sky. / 48
3.1.26.100
saudhavātāyanasthasya tasyopari mahīpateḥ ..
Above that ruler of the earth, who was standing at the window of his palace,
3.1.26.101
uḍḍīyoḍḍīya vegena tarasā jagmuruccakaiḥ .. 49 ..
they flew up and passed by rapidly on high with swiftness. / 49
3.1.26.102
tarasā patatāṃ teṣāṃ haṃsānāṃ pṛṣṭhato vrajan ..
Moving behind those swans that were flying swiftly,
3.1.26.103
eko haṃsastu saṃbodhya haṃsamagresaraṃ tadā .. 3.1.26.50 ..
one swan, addressing the leading swan at that time, / 50
3.1.26.104
sopahāsamidaṃ vākyaṃ prāha śṛṇvati rājani ..
spoke these words derisively, as the king was listening:
3.1.26.105
bhobho bhallākṣa bhallākṣa puro gacchanmarālaka .. 51 ..
“O Bhallākṣa, Bhallākṣa! O swan going ahead! / 51
3.1.26.106
saudhamadhye purastādvai jānaśrutasuto nṛpaḥ ..
Inside the palace right ahead is King Jānaśrutasuta.
3.1.26.107
vartate pūjanīyo'yaṃ na paśyasi kimaṃdhavat .. 52 ..
He is worthy of worship; why do you not see, like a blind one? / 52
3.1.26.108
yasya tejo durādharṣamābrahma bhavanādidam ..
His unassailable splendor, [reaching] from the world of Brahmā downwards,
3.1.26.109
anaṃtādityasaṃkāśaṃ jvalate purato bhṛśam .. 53 ..
shines intensely ahead, resembling countless suns! / 53
3.1.26.110
tamatikramya rājarṣiṃ mā gāstvamupari drutam ..
Do not rush quickly above, bypassing that royal seer!
3.1.26.111
yadi gacchasi tattejassāṃprataṃ tvāṃ pradhakṣyati .. 54 ..
If you go, his splendor will burn you up immediately!” / 54
3.1.26.112
ityuktavaṃtaṃ taṃ haṃsamagrataḥ pratyabhāṣata ..
To him who had spoken thus, the goose in front replied:
3.1.26.113
aho bhavānabhijño'si ślāghanīyo'si sūribhiḥ .. 55 ..
"Oh, you are truly knowledgeable! You are worthy of praise by the wise, 55
3.1.26.114
aślāghanīyaṃ kitavaṃ yattvamenaṃ praśaṃsase ..
since you praise this unworthy rogue!
3.1.26.115
praśaṃsase kimarthaṃ tvamalpaṃ saṃtamimaṃ janam .. 56 ..
Why do you praise this person, who is of small account, 56
3.1.26.116
bhasrāvatpaśuvaccaiva kevalaṃ śvāsadhāriṇam ..
one who merely draws breath like a bellows or like a beast?
3.1.26.117
na hyayaṃ vetti dharmāṇāṃ rahasyaṃ pṛthivī patiḥ .. 57 ..
This lord of the earth does not know the secret of duties, 57
3.1.26.118
tattvajñānī yathā raikvaḥ sayugvānbrāhmaṇottamaḥ ..
as does Raikva, the knower of truth, Sayugvan, the best of brahmins.
3.1.26.119
raikvasya hi mahajjyotīrahasyaṃ daivatairapi .. 58 ..
For Raikva's great light is a mystery even to the gods; 58
3.1.26.120
na hyasya prāṇamātrasya tejastādṛśamasti vai ..
no such splendor belongs to this mere living creature.
3.1.26.121
raikvasya puṇyarāśīnāmiyattā naiva vidyate .. 59 ..
There is no measure to the heaps of Raikva's merit: 59
3.1.26.122
gaṇyate pāṃsavo bhūmergaṇyaṃte divi tārakāḥ ..
the grains of dust on earth can be counted, the stars in the sky can be counted,
3.1.26.123
raikvapuṇyamahāmerusamūho naiva gaṇyate .. .. 3.1.26.60 ..
but the mass of Raikva's merits, [lofty as] Mount Meru, can never be counted. 60
3.1.26.124
kiṃ ca tiṣṭhaṃtvime dharmā naśvarāstasya vai muneḥ ..
Moreover, let these perishable virtues of that sage stand aside:
3.1.26.125
brahmajñānamabādhyaṃ yattena sa ślāghyate muniḥ .. 61 ..
it is because of his unassailable knowledge of Brahman that that sage is praised. 61
3.1.26.126
jānaśrutestu tādṛkṣo dharma eva na vidyate ..
In Jānaśruti, however, no such virtue is found at all;
3.1.26.127
durlabhaṃ yattu yogīndraiḥ kutastajjñānavaibhavam .. 062 ..
how could he have that majesty of knowledge, which is difficult even for the lords of yogins to attain? 62
3.1.26.128
parityajya durātmānaṃ tadvarākamimaṃ janam ..
Therefore, leaving aside this wretched, wicked-minded person,
3.1.26.129
sa eva raikvaḥ sayugvāñchlāghyatāṃ bhavatā muniḥ .. 63 ..
let that very sage Raikva Sayugvan be praised by you! 63
3.1.26.130
janmanā paṃgurapi yaḥ svasya snānacikīrṣayā ..
Though lame from birth, wishing to take his ritual ablution,
3.1.26.131
gaṃgāṃ ca yamunāṃ cāpi gayāmapi munīśvaraḥ .. 64 ..
that lord of sages summoned the Gaṅgā, the Yamunā, and even the Gayā, 64
3.1.26.132
āhvayāmāsa mantreṇa nijāśramasamīpataḥ ..
with a mantra to the vicinity of his own hermitage.
3.1.26.133
tasya brahmavido raikvamaharṣerdharmasaṃcaye .. 65 ..
In the accumulated virtue of that great seer Raikva, knower of Brahman, 65
3.1.26.134
aṃtarbhavaṃti dharmaughāstrailokyodaravartinām ..
are contained all the multitudes of virtues of those living within the three worlds.
3.1.26.135
raikvasya dharmakakṣā tu na hi trailokyavartinām .. 66 ..
The range of Raikva's virtue, however, is never included 66
3.1.26.136
prāṇināṃ dharmakakṣāyāmantarbhavati karhicita ..
within the range of virtue of the creatures who dwell in the three worlds."
3.1.26.137
evamagresare haṃse kathitvoparate sati .. 67 ..
When the leading goose had spoken thus and ceased, 67
3.1.26.138
haṃsarūpā munīṃdrāste brahmalokaṃ yayuḥ punaḥ ..
those lords of sages in the form of geese went back to the world of Brahmā.
3.1.26.139
atha pautrāyaṇo rājā jānaśrutirariṃdamaḥ .. 68 ..
Then King Jānaśruti Pautrāyaṇa, tamer of foes, 68
3.1.26.140
raikvaṃ cotkarṣakāṣṭhāyāṃ niśamya paramāvadhim ..
hearing that Raikva was the ultimate limit and pinnacle of excellence,
3.1.26.141
viṣaṇṇo'bhavadatyarthaṃ varāko'kṣajito yathā .. 69 ..
became exceedingly dejected, like a wretched gambler defeated at dice. 69
3.1.26.142
ciṃtayāmāsa sa nṛpaḥ paunaḥpunyena niḥśvasan ..
Sighing repeatedly, the king reflected:
3.1.26.143
haṃsa utkarṣayanraikvaṃ nikṛṣṭaṃ māmihābravīt .. 3.1.26.70 ..
"The goose, while extolling Raikva, spoke of me here as vile! 70
3.1.26.144
aho raikvasya māhātmyaṃ yaṃ praśaṃsaṃti pakṣiṇaḥ ..
Ah, the greatness of Raikva, whom birds praise!
3.1.26.145
tatparityajya saṃsāraṃ sarvaṃ rājyamihādhunā .. 71 ..
Therefore, abandoning worldly life and all my kingdom here now, 71
3.1.26.146
sayugvānaṃ mahātmānaṃ tameva śaraṇaṃ vraje ..
I will go for refuge to that very noble soul, Sayugvan.
3.1.26.147
kṛpānidhiḥ sa vai raikvaḥ śaraṇaṃ māmupāgatam .. 72 ..
That Raikva is a treasury of compassion; when I have approached for refuge, 72
3.1.26.148
pratigṛhyātmavijñānaṃ mahyaṃ samupadekṣyati ..
he will accept me and instruct me in the knowledge of the Self."
3.1.26.149
ityasau ciṃtayanneva kathaṃkathamapi dvijāḥ .. 73 ..
While he was reflecting thus, O twice-born,
3.1.26.150
jāgrannevāyamudvelāṃ rātriṃ tāmatyavāhayat ..
he somehow spent that endless night remaining wide awake. 73
3.1.26.151
niśāvasāne saṃprāpte baṃdivṛndapravartitam .. 74 ..
When the end of the night arrived, he heard the auspicious song 74
3.1.26.152
aśṛṇonmaṃgalaravaṃ tūryaghoṣasamanvitam ..
commenced by the band of bards, accompanied by the blare of musical instruments.
3.1.26.153
tadākarṇya mahārājastadā talpastha eva san .. 75 ..
Hearing that, the great king, still lying on his couch, 75
3.1.26.154
sārathiṃ śīghramāhūya babhāṣe sādaraṃ vacaḥ ..
immediately summoned his charioteer and spoke respectful words:
3.1.26.155
sārathe satvaraṃ gatvā rathamāruhya vegavat .. 76 ..
"Charioteer, go swiftly, mounting a fast chariot! 76
3.1.26.156
āśrameṣu maharṣīṇāṃ puṇyeṣu vipineṣu ca ..
In the hermitages of great seers, in holy forests,
3.1.26.157
vivikteṣu pradeśeṣu satāmāvāsabhūmiṣu .. 77 ..
in solitary places, in the dwelling-grounds of the virtuous, 77
3.1.26.158
tīrthānāṃ ca nadīnāṃ ca kūleṣu pulineṣu ca ..
on the banks and sandy shores of sacred fords and rivers,
3.1.26.159
anyeṣu ca pradeśeṣu yatra saṃti munīśvarāḥ .. .. 78 ..
and in other regions where lords of sages dwell— 78
3.1.26.160
teṣu sarveṣu yogīṃdraṃ paṃguṃ śakaṭasaṃsthitam ..
in all of them, search for the lord of yogins, the lame one sitting beneath a cart,
3.1.26.161
raikvābhidhānaṃ sarveṣāṃ dharmāṇāmekasaṃśrayam .. 79 ..
named Raikva, the sole refuge of all duties, 79
3.1.26.162
brahmajñānaikanilayaṃ sayugvānaṃ gaveṣaya ..
the unique abode of the knowledge of Brahman, Sayugvan.
3.1.26.163
anviṣya tūrṇaṃ matprītyai punarāgaccha sārathe .. 3.1.26.80 ..
Having found him quickly, come back to please me, O charioteer!" 80
3.1.26.164
sa tatheti vinirgatya vegavadrathasaṃsthitaḥ ..
Saying, "So be it," he set out, seated upon a swift chariot,
3.1.26.165
sarvatrānveṣayāmāsa raikvaṃ brahmavidaṃ munim .. 81 ..
and searched everywhere for the sage Raikva, the knower of Brahman. 81
3.1.26.166
guhāsu parvatānāṃ ca munīnāmāśrameṣu ca ..
In caves of mountains and in hermitages of sages,
3.1.26.167
saṃcacāra mahīṃ kṛtsnāṃ tatra tatra gaveṣayan .. 82 ..
he traversed the entire earth, searching here and there. 82
3.1.26.168
anviṣya vividhāndeśānsārathistvarayā saha ..
Having searched various regions with haste,
3.1.26.169
kramānmaharṣisaṃbādhaṃ gaṃdhamādanamanvagāt .. 83 ..
the charioteer gradually reached Mount Gandhamādana, crowded with great seers. 83
3.1.26.170
mārgamāṇaḥ sa tatrāpi taṃ dadarśa munīśvaram ..
Searching there as well, he saw that lord of sages
3.1.26.171
kaṃḍūyamānaṃ pāmānaṃ śakaṭīyasthalasthitam .. 84 ..
scratching his scabies, seated in the place beneath his cart. 84
3.1.26.172
advaitaniṣkalaṃ brahma ciṃtayaṃtaṃ nirantaram ..
continually contemplating the partless, non-dual brahman.
3.1.26.173
taṃ dṛṣṭvā sārathistatra sayugvānaṃ mahāmunim .. 85 ..
Seeing that great sage, Sayugvan, there,
3.1.26.174
raikvo'yamiti saṃciṃtya tamāsādya praṇamya ca ..
the charioteer thought, “This is Raikva,” approached him, bowed,
3.1.26.175
vinayānmunimaprākṣīdupaviśya tadantike .. 86 ..
and, sitting near him, politely asked the sage:
3.1.26.176
sayugvānraikvanāmā ca brahmankiṃ vai bhavāniti ..
“O brahmin, are you indeed Sayugvan, named Raikva?”
3.1.26.177
tasya vākyaṃ samākarṇya sa muniḥ pratyabhāṣata .. 87 ..
Hearing his words, the sage replied:
3.1.26.178
ahameva sayugvānvai raikvanāmeti vai tadā ..
“Indeed, I am Sayugvan, named Raikva.”
3.1.26.179
ityākarṇya mune rvākyamiṃgitairbahubhistathā .. 88 ..
Hearing the sage’s reply, and through many gestures
3.1.26.180
kuṭumbabharaṇārthāya dhanecchāmavagamya ca ..
perceiving [the sage’s] desire for wealth to support his family,
3.1.26.181
sarvaṃ nyavedayadrājñe nivṛtto gaṃdhamādanāt .. 89 ..
he returned from Gandhamādana and reported everything to the king.
3.1.26.182
jānaśrutirniśamyātha sārathervākyamādarāt ..
Then, having listened attentively to the charioteer’s words,
3.1.26.183
ṣaṭśatāni gavāṃ cāpi niṣkabhāraṃ dhanasya ca .. 3.1.26.90 ..
taking six hundred cows, a load of gold coins,
3.1.26.184
rathaṃ cāśvatarīyuktaṃ samādāya tvarānvitaḥ ..
and a chariot yoked with she-mules, with haste,
3.1.26.185
pautrāyaṇaḥ sa rājarṣistaṃ raikvaṃ praticakrame .. 91 ..
that royal sage, the grandson of Janaprashruta (Pautrāyaṇa), approached Raikva.
3.1.26.186
gatvā ca vacanaṃ prāha taṃ raikvaṃ sa mahīpatiḥ ..
Going up to Raikva, the lord of the earth spoke these words:
3.1.26.187
bhagavanraikva sayugvanmaddattaṃ pratigṛhyatām .. 92 ..
“O venerable Raikva, O Sayugvan, please accept what I offer:
3.1.26.188
ṣaṭśatāni gavāṃ cāpi niṣkabhāraṃ dhanasya ca ..
six hundred cows, a load of gold coins,
3.1.26.189
rathaṃ cāśvatarīyuktaṃ pratigṛhṇīṣva māmakam .. 93 ..
and this chariot of mine yoked with she-mules, please accept.
3.1.26.190
gṛhītvā savametattu bho brahmannanuśādhi mām ..
Having accepted all this, O brahmin, instruct me!
3.1.26.191
advaitabrahmavijñānaṃ mahyaṃ samupadiśyatām .. 94 ..
Teach me the experiential knowledge of non-dual brahman.”
3.1.26.192
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā saspṛhaṃ ca sasaṃbhram ..
Hearing his words, spoken with yearning and eager agitation,
3.1.26.193
raikvaḥ pratyāha sayugvāñjānaśrutimariṃdamam .. .. 95 ..
Raikva Sayugvan answered Jānaśruti, the subduer of enemies.
3.1.26.194
.. raikva uvāca .. ..
Raikva said:
3.1.26.195
etā gāvastavaivāstu niṣkabhārastathā rathaḥ ..
“Let these cows remain yours, as well as the load of gold and the chariot.
3.1.26.196
kimalpena mamānena bahukalpeṣu jīvataḥ .. 96 ..
What use to me is this trifle, living as I do through many kalpas?
3.1.26.197
na me kuṭuṃba nirvāhe paryāptamidamaṃjasā ..
This is truly not sufficient for the maintenance of my family.
3.1.26.198
evaṃ śataguṇaṃ cāpi yadi dattaṃ tvayā mama .. 97 ..
Even if a hundred times this amount were given by you to me,
3.1.26.199
nālaṃ tadapi rājeṃdra kuṭuṃbabharaṇāya vai ..
even that would not suffice, O king of kings, to maintain the family.”
3.1.26.200
iti raikvavacaḥ śrutvā jānaśrutirabhāṣata .. 98 ..
Hearing these words of Raikva, Jānaśruti said:
