3.1.31.1
.. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ .. ..
The seers said:
3.1.31.2
aśvatthāmā kathaṃ sūta suptamāraṇamācarat..
How did Aśvatthāman commit the slaughter of those asleep, O Sūta?
3.1.31.3
kathaṃ ca muktastatpāpāddhanuṣkoṭau nimajjanāt .. 1 ..
And how was he freed from that sin by immersing himself in Dhanuṣkoṭi?
3.1.31.4
etannaḥ śraddadhānānāṃ brūhi paurāṇikottama ..
Tell this to us who are full of faith, O best of Purāṇa reciters!
3.1.31.5
tṛptirna jāyate' smākaṃ tvadvacomṛtapāyinām .. 2 ..
No satiety arises in us who drink the nectar of your speech.
3.1.31.6
iti pṛṣṭastadā sūto naimiṣāraṇyavāsibhiḥ ..
Thus questioned then by the inhabitants of the Naimiṣa forest,
3.1.31.7
vaktuṃ pracakrame tatra vyāsaṃ natvā guruṃ mudā .. ..
Sūta, having joyfully bowed to his guru Vyāsa, began to speak there.
3.1.31.8
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Glorious Sūta said:
3.1.31.9
rājyārthaṃ kalahe jāte pāṃḍavānāṃ purā dvijāḥ ..
Formerly, O twice-born, when a dispute arose over the kingdom between the Pāṇḍavas
3.1.31.10
dhārtarāṣṭrairmahāyuddhe mahadakṣauhiṇīyute .. 4 ..
and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, in the great war joined with vast armies of akṣauhiṇīs,
3.1.31.11
yuddhaṃ daśadinaṃ kṛtvā bhīṣme śāṃtanave hate ..
after fighting for ten days, when Bhīṣma, son of Śantanu, was slain,
3.1.31.12
droṇe paṃcadinaṃ kṛtvā karṇe ca dvidinaṃ tathā .. 5 ..
after [Droṇa fought] for five days, and after Karṇa [fought] for two days,
3.1.31.13
tathaivaikadinaṃ yuddhvā śalye ca nidhanaṃ gate ..
and after Śalya, having fought for one day, met his death,
3.1.31.14
aṣṭādaśadine tatra raṇe duryodhane dvijāḥ .. .. 6 ..
on the eighteenth day in that battle, O twice-born,
3.1.31.15
bhagnorau bhīmagadayā patite rājasattame ..
when Duryodhana, best of kings, fell with his thighs shattered by Bhīma's club,
3.1.31.16
sarve nṛpatayo viprā niveśāya kṛtatvarāḥ .. 7 ..
all the kings, O brahmins, hastened to make camp.
3.1.31.17
ye jīvitāstu rājānaste yayurhṛṣṭamānasāḥ ..
Those kings who survived went with joyful minds,
3.1.31.18
dhṛṣṭadyumnaśikhaṃḍayādyāḥ sṛñjayāḥ sarva eva hi .. 8 ..
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍin and the others, and indeed all the Sṛñjayas.
3.1.31.19
anye cāpi mahīpālā jagmuḥ svaśibirāṇyatha ..
And other rulers of the earth also departed to their own camps.
3.1.31.20
atha pārthā mahāvīrā kṛṣṇasātyakisaṃyutāḥ .. 9 ..
Then the heroic sons of Pṛthā, accompanied by Kṛṣṇa and Sātyaki,
3.1.31.21
duryodhanasya śibiraṃ prāviśannirjanaṃ dvijāḥ ..
entered Duryodhana's deserted camp, O twice-born.
3.1.31.22
vṛddhairamātyaistatrasthaiḥ ṣaṃḍhaiḥ strīrakṣakaistathā .. 3.1.31.10 ..
By the elderly ministers present there, and by the eunuchs guarding the women,
3.1.31.23
kṛtāṃjalipuṭaiḥ prahvaiḥ kāṣāyamalināṃbaraiḥ ..
who had their hands folded in reverence, bowing low, clad in ochre and soiled garments,
3.1.31.24
praṇamyamānāste pārthāḥ kururājasya veśmani .. 11 ..
the sons of Pṛthā were saluted in the palace of the Kuru king.
3.1.31.25
tatratyadravyajātāni samādāya mahā balāḥ ..
Taking possession of the various wealth situated there, those mighty ones
3.1.31.26
suyodhanasya śibire nyavasaṃta sukhena te .. 12 ..
dwelt happily in the camp of Suyodhana.
3.1.31.27
atha tānabravītpārthāñchrīkṛṣṇaḥ prīṇayanniva ..
Then glorious Kṛṣṇa, as if pleasing them, spoke to those sons of Pṛthā:
3.1.31.28
maṃgalārthāya cāsmābhirvastavyaṃ śibirādbahiḥ .. 13 ..
"For the sake of auspiciousness, we should stay outside the camp."
3.1.31.29
ityuktā vāsudevena tathetyuktvātha pāṃḍavāḥ ..
Thus addressed by Vāsudeva, saying "So be it," the Pāṇḍavas,
3.1.31.30
kṛṣṇasātyakisaṃyuktāḥ prayayuḥ śibirādbahiḥ .. 14 ..
accompanied by Kṛṣṇa and Sātyaki, went outside the camp.
3.1.31.31
vāsudevena sahitā maṃgalārthaṃ hi pāṃḍavāḥ ..
Together with Vāsudeva, indeed for the sake of auspiciousness, the Pāṇḍavas,
3.1.31.32
oghavatyāḥ samāsādya tīraṃ nadyā narottamāḥ .. 15 ..
those best of men, having reached the bank of the Oghavatī river,
3.1.31.33
ūṣustāṃ rajanīṃ tatra hataśatrugaṇāḥ sukham ..
spent that night there pleasantly, having slain the hosts of their enemies.
3.1.31.34
kṛtavarmā kṛpo drauṇistathā duryodhanāṃtikam.. 16 ..
Kṛtavarman, Kṛpa, and the son of Droṇa [went] into the presence of Duryodhana;
3.1.31.35
ādityāstamayātpūrvamaparāhṇe samāyayuḥ ..
they arrived in the late afternoon before the setting of the sun.
3.1.31.36
suyodhanaṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā raṇapāṃsuṣu rūṣitam .. 17 ..
Then, seeing Suyodhana smeared with the dust of battle,
3.1.31.37
bhagnorudaṇḍaṃ gadayā bhīmasena sya bhīmayā ..
with his thigh-bones shattered by Bhīmasena's terrible mace,
3.1.31.38
rudhirāsiktasarvāṃgaṃ ceṣṭamānaṃ mahītale .. 18 ..
his entire body drenched in blood, writhing on the surface of the earth,
3.1.31.39
aśocaṃta tadā tatra droṇaputrādayastrayaḥ ..
the three, Droṇa's son and the others, grieved there at that time.
3.1.31.40
śuśoca so'pi tāndṛṣṭvā raṇe duryodhano nṛpaḥ .. 19 ..
And King Duryodhana, seeing them, also grieved on the battlefield.
3.1.31.41
dṛṣṭvā tathā tu rājānaṃ bāṣpavyākulalocanam ..
Seeing the king in such a state, his eyes blurred with tears,
3.1.31.42
aśvatthāmā tadā kopājjvalanniva mahānalaḥ .. 3.1.31.20 ..
Aśvatthāman, blazing with anger then like a great fire,
3.1.31.43
pāṇau pāṇiṃ viniṣpiṣya krodha visphāritekṣaṇaḥ ..
wringing hand with hand, his eyes wide with rage,
3.1.31.44
aśruviklavayā vācā duryodhanamabhāṣata .. 21 ..
spoke to Duryodhana in a voice choking with tears:
3.1.31.45
pitā me pātitaḥ kṣudraiśchalenaiva raṇājire ..
“My father was brought down on the battlefield by vile men through sheer deceit.
3.1.31.46
na tathā tena śocāmi yathā niṣpātite tvayi .. 22 ..
I do not grieve so much for that as I do for you being brought low.
3.1.31.47
śṛṇu vākyaṃ mamādya tvaṃ yathārthaṃ vadato nṛpa ..
Hear my words today, O king, as I speak the truth.
3.1.31.48
sukṛtena śape cāhaṃ suyodhana mahāmate .. 23 ..
I swear by my meritorious deeds, O noble Suyodhana:
3.1.31.49
adya rātrau haniṣyāmi pāṃḍavā nsaha sṛṃjayaiḥ ..
Tonight I will slaughter the Pāṇḍavas along with the Sṛñjayas,
3.1.31.50
paśyato vāsudevasya tvamanujñāṃ prayaccha me .. 24 ..
before the very eyes of Vāsudeva! Grant me your permission!”
3.1.31.51
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā drauṇiṃ rājā tadā'bravīt ..
Hearing those words of his, the king then said to Droṇa's son,
3.1.31.52
tathāstviti punaḥ prāha kṛpaṃ rājā dvijottamāḥ .. 25 ..
“So be it!” And again, O best of brahmins, the king said to Kṛpa:
3.1.31.53
ācāryainaṃ droṇaputraṃ kalaśotthena vāriṇā ..
“O teacher, consecrate this son of Droṇa with water from a jar
3.1.31.54
saināpatye'bhiṣiṃcasvetyatha sopi tathā'karot .. 26 ..
to the supreme command of the army!” And he did so.
3.1.31.55
sobhiṣiktastadā drauṇiḥ pariṣvajya nṛpottamam ..
Droṇa's son, having been consecrated, embraced the best of kings,
3.1.31.56
kṛtavarmakṛpābhyāṃ ca sahitastvaritaṃ yayau .. 27 ..
and, accompanied by Kṛtavarman and Kṛpa, departed swiftly.
3.1.31.57
tataste tu trayo vīrāḥ prayātā dakṣiṇonmukhāḥ ..
Then those three heroes set out heading south.
3.1.31.58
ādityāstamayātpūrvaṃ śibirāṃtikamāsata .. 28 ..
Before sunset, they approached the vicinity of the camp.
3.1.31.59
pārthānāṃ bhīṣaṇaṃ śabdaṃ śrutvā tatra jayaiṣiṇaḥ ..
Hearing the dreadful roar of the Pārthas who desired victory there,
3.1.31.60
pāṃḍavānudrutā bhītāstadā drauṇyādayastrayaḥ .. 29 ..
pursued by the Pāṇḍavas and terrified, the three led by Droṇa's son
3.1.31.61
prāṅmukhā dudruvurbhītyā kiyaddūraṃ śramāturāḥ ..
fled facing east for some distance in fear, exhausted with fatigue.
3.1.31.62
muhurtaṃ te tato gatvā krodhāmarṣavaśānugāḥ .. 3.1.31.30 ..
Having gone on for a moment, overcome by wrath and indignation,
3.1.31.63
duryodhanavadhārtāste kṣaṇaṃ tatrāvatasthire ..
afflicted by Duryodhana's fall, they halted there for a while.
3.1.31.64
tato'paśyannaraṇyaṃ vai nānātarulatāvṛtam .. 31 ..
Then they saw a forest filled with various trees and creepers,
3.1.31.65
anekamṛgasaṃbādhaṃ krūrapakṣigaṇākulam ..
teeming with numerous deer and crowded with flocks of fierce birds,
3.1.31.66
samṛddhajalasaṃpūrṇataṭākapariśobhitam .. 32 ..
adorned with ponds brimming with abundant water,
3.1.31.67
padmeṃdīvarakahlārasarasī śatasaṃkulam ..
crowded with hundreds of lakes of lotuses, blue water-lilies, and white water-lilies.
3.1.31.68
tatra pītvā jalaṃ te tu pāyayitvā hayāṃstathā .. 33 ..
Having drunk water there and having watered their horses,
3.1.31.69
anekaśākhāsaṃbādhanyagrodhaṃ dadṛśustataḥ ..
they then beheld a banyan tree dense with many branches.
3.1.31.70
saṃprāpya tu mahāvṛkṣaṃ nyagrodhaṃ te trayastadā .. 34 ..
Reaching that great banyan tree, the three then
3.1.31.71
avatīrya rathebhyaśca mocayitvā turaṃgamān ..
dismounted from their chariots, unharnessed the horses,
3.1.31.72
upaspṛśya jalaṃ tatra sāyaṃsaṃdhyāmupāsata .. 35 ..
sipped water there, and performed the evening twilight worship.
3.1.31.73
atha cāstagiriṃ bhānuḥ prapede ca gataprabhaḥ ..
And then the sun, devoid of luster, reached the setting mountain,
3.1.31.74
tataśca rajanī ghorā samabhūttimirākulā .. 36 ..
and a dreadful night shrouded in darkness arose.
3.1.31.75
rātricarāṇi sattvāni saṃcaraṃti tatastataḥ ..
Creatures of the night roamed here and there,
3.1.31.76
divācarāṇi sattvāni nidrāvaśamupā yayuḥ .. 37 ..
while creatures of the day fell under the sway of sleep.
3.1.31.77
kṛtavarmā kṛpo drauṇiḥ pradoṣasamaye hi te ..
Kṛtavarman, Kṛpa, and Droṇa's son, at the time of nightfall,
3.1.31.78
nyagrodhasyopaviviśuraṃtike śokakarśitāḥ .. 38 ..
sat near the banyan tree, emaciated by sorrow.
3.1.31.79
kṛpabhojau tadā nidrāṃ bhejāte'tipa yākramau ..
Kṛpa and the Bhoja [Kṛtavarman] then fell asleep, overcome with great fatigue;
3.1.31.80
sukhocitāstvaduḥkhārhā niṣedurdharaṇītale .. 39 ..
accustomed to comfort, undeserving of suffering, they lay on the bare earth.
3.1.31.81
droṇaputrastu kopena kaluṣīkṛtamānasaḥ ..
Droṇa's son, however, his mind defiled by rage,
3.1.31.82
yayau na nidrāṃ vipreṃdrā niśvasannurago yathā .. 3.1.31.40 ..
found no sleep, O best of brahmins, hissing like a serpent.
3.1.31.83
tato'valokayāṃcakre tadaraṇyaṃ bhayānakam ..
Then he looked around at that terrible forest,
3.1.31.84
nyagrodhaṃ ca tato'paśyadbahuvāyasasaṃkulam .. 41 ..
and then saw the banyan tree crowded with many crows.
3.1.31.85
tatra vāyasavṛndāni niśāyāṃ vāsamāya yuḥ ..
Flocks of crows had come to roost there for the night;
3.1.31.86
sukhaṃ bhinnāsu śākhāsu suṣupuste pṛthakpṛthak .. 42 ..
they were sleeping peacefully on different branches, each by itself.
3.1.31.87
kākeṣu teṣu supteṣu viśvasteṣu samaṃtataḥ ..
While those crows slept trustfully on all sides,
3.1.31.88
tato'paśyatsamāyāṃtaṃ bhāsaṃ drauṇirbhayaṃkaram .. .. 43 ..
Droṇa's son then saw a terrifying owl approaching,
3.1.31.89
kūraśabdaṃ krūrakāyaṃ babhrupiṃgakalevaram ..
making a cruel sound, having a cruel form and a tawny-brown body.
3.1.31.90
sa bhāso'tha bhṛśaṃ śabdaṃ kṛtvālīyata śākhini .. 44 ..
That owl, making a loud screech, hid in the tree.
3.1.31.91
utplutya tasya śākhāyāṃ nyagrodhasya vihaṃgamaḥ ..
Leaping upon a branch of that banyan tree, the bird,
3.1.31.92
suptānkākānnijaghne'sāvanekānvāyasāṃtakaḥ .. 45 ..
the destroyer of crows, slaughtered numerous sleeping crows.
3.1.31.93
kākānāmabhinatpakṣānsa keṣāṃcidvihaṃgamaḥ ..
The bird broke the wings of some of the crows;
3.1.31.94
itareṣāṃ ca caraṇāñchirāṃsi caraṇā yudhaḥ .. 46 ..
and with its claws as weapons, the legs and heads of others
3.1.31.95
vicakarta kṣaṇenāsāvulūko valavāndvijāḥ ..
that powerful owl severed in an instant, O brahmins.
3.1.31.96
sa bhinnadehāvayavaiḥ kākānāṃ bahubhistadā .. 47 ..
Then, with the many severed limbs of the bodies of the crows,
3.1.31.97
samaṃtādāvṛtaṃ sarvaṃ nyagrodhapari maṇḍalam ..
the entire perimeter of the banyan tree was covered all around.
3.1.31.98
vāyasāṃstānnihatyāsāvulūko mumude tadā .. 48 ..
Having slain those crows, that owl then rejoiced.
3.1.31.99
drauṇirdṛṣṭvā tu tatkarma bhāsenaivaṃ kṛtaṃ niśi ..
Droṇa's son, however, seeing that deed performed thus by the owl at night,
3.1.31.100
kariṣyāmyahamapyevaṃ śatrūṇāṃ nidhanaṃ niśi .. 49 ..
"I too shall bring about the destruction of my enemies at night in this very way."
3.1.31.101
ityaciṃtayadekaḥ sannupadeśamimaṃ smaran ..
Thus he thought, being alone, remembering this teaching:
3.1.31.102
jetuṃ na śakyāḥ pārthā hi ṛjumārgeṇa yuddhyatā .. 3.1.31.50 ..
"The sons of Pṛthā cannot indeed be conquered by one fighting in a straightforward manner.
3.1.31.103
mayā tacchadmanā te'tha haṃtavyā jitakāśinaḥ ..
Therefore, they who vaunt their victory must now be slain by me through deceit.
3.1.31.104
suyodhanasakāśe ca pratijñāto mayā vadhaḥ .. 51 ..
And their slaughter was promised by me in Suyodhana's presence.
3.1.31.105
ṛjumārgeṇa yuddhe me prāṇanāśo bhaviṣyati ..
In a straightforward fight, the loss of my life will occur;
3.1.31.106
chalena yudhyamānasya jayaścāsya ripukṣayaḥ .. 52 ..
but for one fighting with trickery, victory and the destruction of his enemies [will result].
3.1.31.107
yacca niṃdyaṃ bhavetkāryaṃ loke sarvajanairapi ..
Even an action that may be condemned in the world by all people
3.1.31.108
kāryameva hi tatkarma kṣatradharmānuvartinā .. 53 ..
is indeed to be performed by one who adheres to the duty of the warrior class.
3.1.31.109
pārthairapi chalenaiva kṛtaṃ karma suyodhane ..
By the sons of Pṛthā, too, action was taken against Suyodhana solely through deceit.
3.1.31.110
asminnarthe purāvidbhiḥ proktāḥ ślokā bhavaṃti hi .. 54 ..
On this matter, there are indeed verses uttered by knowers of ancient lore:
3.1.31.111
pariśrāṃte vidīrṇe ca bhuṃjāne ca riporbale ..
'When the enemy's army is exhausted, broken, and eating,
3.1.31.112
prasthāne ca praveśe ca prahartavyaṃ na saṃśayaḥ .. 55 ..
and during departure and entry, one should strike without doubt.
3.1.31.113
nidrārtamardharātre ca tathā tyaktāyudhaṃ raṇe ..
Oppressed by sleep at midnight, and likewise having abandoned weapons in battle,
3.1.31.114
bhinnayodhaṃ balaṃ sarvaṃ prahartavyamarātibhiḥ .. 56 ..
an entire force whose warriors are divided should be struck down by its enemies.'"
3.1.31.115
evaṃ sa niyamaṃ kṛtvā suptamāraṇakarmaṇi ..
Having thus made a resolve regarding the act of slaughtering the sleeping,
3.1.31.116
prābodhayadbhojakṛpau suptau rātrau sa sāhasī ..
that daring warrior awakened the Bhoja and Kṛpa, who were asleep at night.
3.1.31.117
drauṇirdhyātvā muhūrtaṃ tu tāvubhāvabhyabhāṣata .. 57 .. ..
The son of Droṇa, having reflected for a moment, addressed them both:
3.1.31.118
.. aśvatthāmovāca .. ..
Aśvatthāman said:
3.1.31.119
mṛtaḥ suyodhano rājā mahābalaparākramaḥ .. 58 ..
"King Suyodhana, of great strength and prowess, is dead;
3.1.31.120
śuddhakarmā hataḥ pārthairbahubhiḥ kṣudrakarmabhiḥ ..
[he of] pure deeds was slain by many sons of Pṛthā of vile deeds.
3.1.31.121
bhīmenātinṛśaṃsena śiro rājñaḥ padā hatam .. 59 ..
The king's head was struck with a foot by the exceedingly cruel Bhīma.
3.1.31.122
tato'dya rātrau pārthānāṃ sametya paṭamaṇḍapam ..
Therefore, having gone together tonight to the tent pavilion of the sons of Pṛthā,
3.1.31.123
sukhasuptānhaniṣyāmaḥ śastrairnānāvidhairvayam ..
we shall slay them while they sleep peacefully, with various kinds of weapons."
3.1.31.124
kṛpaḥ provāca tatraina miti śrutvā dvijottamāḥ .. 3.1.31.60 ..
Having heard this, O best of the twice-born, Kṛpa spoke there to his friend:
3.1.31.125
.. kṛpa uvāca .. ..
Kṛpa said:
3.1.31.126
suptānāṃ māraṇaṃ loke na dharmo na ca pūjyate .. 61 ..
"The killing of those who are asleep is not righteousness in the world, nor is it praised;
3.1.31.127
tathaiva tyaktaśastrāṇāṃ saṃtyaktarathavāji nām ..
likewise of those who have cast aside their weapons, and of those who have abandoned their chariots and horses.
3.1.31.128
śṛṇu me vacanaṃ vatsa mucyatāṃ sāhasaṃ tvayā .. 62 ..
Listen to my word, dear child: let rashness be abandoned by you.
3.1.31.129
vayaṃ tu dhṛtarāṣṭaṃ ca gāṃdhārīṃ ca pativratām ..
Let us ask Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the devoted wife Gāndhārī,
3.1.31.130
pṛcchāmo viduraṃ cāpi taduktaṃ karavā mahe ..
and also Vidura; let us do what is spoken by them."
3.1.31.131
ityuktaḥ sa tadā drauṇiḥ kṛpaṃ provāca vai punaḥ .. 63 ..
Having been spoken to in this way, the son of Droṇa then replied to Kṛpa:
3.1.31.132
..aśvatthāmovāca .. ..
Aśvatthāman said:
3.1.31.133
pāṃḍavaiśca purā yanme chalādyuddhe pitā hataḥ .. 64 ..
"The fact that my father was previously slain by the Pāṇḍavas in battle through deceit,
3.1.31.134
tanme sarvāṇi marmāṇi nikṛntati hi mātula ..
that cuts into all my vital spots, O maternal uncle!
3.1.31.135
droṇahaṃtāhamityetaddhṛṣṭadyumasya yadvacaḥ .. 65 ..
These words of Dhṛṣṭadyumna: 'I am the slayer of Droṇa'—
3.1.31.136
kathaṃ janasamakṣe tadvacanaṃ saṃśṛṇomyaham ..
how can I listen to such a statement in the presence of people?
3.1.31.137
taireva pāṃḍavaiḥ pūrvaṃ dharmaseturnirākṛtaḥ .. 66 ..
By those very Pāṇḍavas was the barrier of righteousness shattered earlier.
3.1.31.138
samakṣameva yuṣmākaṃ sarveṣāmeva bhūbhṛtām ..
Right before the eyes of you all, and indeed of all the kings,
3.1.31.139
tyaktāyudho mama pitā dhṛṣṭadyumnena pātitaḥ .. 67 ..
my father, who had laid down his weapons, was brought down by Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
3.1.31.140
tathā śāṃtanavo bhīṣmastyaktacāpo nirāyudhaḥ ..
Likewise Bhīṣma, the son of Śaṃtanu, having cast down his bow and devoid of weapons,
3.1.31.141
śikhaṃḍinaṃ purodhāya nihataḥ savyasācinā .. 68 ..
was struck down by Savyasācin, who placed Śikhaṇḍin in front.
3.1.31.142
evamanye'pi bhūpālāśchalenaiva hatāstu taiḥ ..
In this way, other rulers of the earth too were slain by them solely through deceit.
3.1.31.143
tathaivāhaṃ kariṣyāmi suptānāṃ māraṇaṃ niśi .. 69 ..
In that very manner I shall bring about the slaughter of the sleeping at night."
3.1.31.144
evamuktvā tadā drauṇiḥ saṃyuktaturagaṃ ratham..
Having spoken thus, the son of Droṇa then [mounted] a chariot with horses yoked,
3.1.31.145
prāyādabhimukhaḥ śatrūnsamāruhya krudhā jvalan .. 3.1.31.70..
and having mounted it, blazing with rage, set forth towards the enemies.
3.1.31.146
taṃ yāṃtama nvagātāṃ tau kṛtavarmakṛpāvubhau ..
Both Kṛtavarman and Kṛpa followed him as he went;
3.1.31.147
yayuśca śibire teṣāṃ saṃprasuptajanaṃ tadā .. 71 ..
and they came then to their camp, where the people were fast asleep.
3.1.31.148
śibiradvāramāsādya droṇaputro vyatiṣṭhata ..
Having reached the entrance of the camp, the son of Droṇa stood there.
3.1.31.149
rātrau tatra samārādhya mahādevaṃ ghṛṇānidhim .. 72 ..
Having propitiated Mahādeva, the treasure of compassion, there at night,
3.1.31.150
avāpa vimalaṃ khaṅgaṃ mahādevādvarapradāt ..
he received a spotless sword from Mahādeva, the granter of boons.
3.1.31.151
tato drauṇiravasthāpya kṛtavarmakṛpāvubhau .. 73 ..
Then the son of Droṇa, having stationed both Kṛtavarman and Kṛpa
3.1.31.152
dvāradeśe mahāvīraḥ śibi rāṃtaḥ praviṣṭavān ..
at the region of the gateway, entered the interior of the camp, a great hero.
3.1.31.153
praviṣṭe śibire drauṇau kṛtavarmakṛpāvubhau.. 74 ..
When the son of Droṇa had entered the camp, both Kṛtavarman and Kṛpa,
3.1.31.154
dvāradeśe vyatiṣṭhetāṃ yattau paramadhanvinau ..
supreme archers, stood on guard at the entrance.
3.1.31.155
atha drauṇiḥ susaṃkruddhastejasā prajvalanniva .. 75 ..
Then the son of Droṇa, utterly enraged, blazing as it were with splendour,
3.1.31.156
khaṅgaṃ vimalamādāya vyacaracchibire niśi ..
taking up the spotless sword, roamed the camp at night.
3.1.31.157
tatastu dhṛṣṭadyumnasya śibiraṃ maṃdamāyayau .. 76 ..
Then he slowly approached the camp of Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
3.1.31.158
dhṛṣṭadyumnādayastatra mahāyuddhena karśitāḥ ..
There, Dhṛṣṭadyumna and the others, exhausted by the great battle,
3.1.31.159
suṣupurniśi viśvastāḥ svasvasainyasamāvṛtāḥ .. 77 ..
slept at night, feeling secure, surrounded by their respective troops.
3.1.31.160
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya śibiraṃ praviśya drauṇirastravit ..
Having entered Dhṛṣṭadyumna's camp, the son of Droṇa, skilled in weapons,
3.1.31.161
taṃ suptaṃ śayane śubhre dadarśārānmahābalam .. 78 ..
saw nearby that mighty warrior sleeping upon a splendid couch.
3.1.31.162
pādenāghātayadroṣātsvapaṃtaṃ droṇanaṃdanaḥ ..
In fury, Droṇa's son kicked the sleeping warrior with his foot.
3.1.31.163
sa buddhaścaraṇāghātādutthāya śayanādatha .. 79 ..
Awakened by the kick and rising up from the couch,
3.1.31.164
vyalokayattadā vīro droṇaputraṃ puraḥ sthitam ..
the hero then beheld Droṇa's son standing before him.
3.1.31.165
tamutpataṃtaṃ śayanāddroṇācāryasuto balī .. 3.1.31.80 ..
As he sprang up from the couch, the powerful son of the master Droṇa,
3.1.31.166
keśeṣvākṛṣya bāhubhyāṃ niṣpipeṣa dharātale ..
dragging him by the hair with both arms, crushed him down onto the ground.
3.1.31.167
dhṛṣṭadyumnastadā tena niṣpiṣṭaḥ sa bhayā turaḥ .. 81 ..
Then Dhṛṣṭadyumna, crushed by him, stricken with fear,
3.1.31.168
nidrāṃdhaḥ pādaghātāto na śaśāka viceṣṭitum ..
blinded by sleep and afflicted by the blows of his foot, was unable to struggle.
3.1.31.169
drauṇistvākramya tasyoraḥ kaṇṭhaṃ baddhvā dhanurguṇaiḥ .. 82 ..
Droṇa's son, stepping upon his chest and binding his neck with bowstrings,
3.1.31.170
nadaṃtaṃ visphuraṃtaṃ taṃ paśumāramamārayat ..
killed him as one slaughters a sacrificial beast, while he groaned and writhed.
3.1.31.171
tasya sainyāni sarvāṇi nyavadhīcca tathaiva saḥ .. 83 ..
And he likewise slaughtered all his forces,
3.1.31.172
yudhāmanyuṃ mahāvīryamamuttamaujasameva ca ..
as well as the exceedingly valiant Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas,
3.1.31.173
tathaiva draupadīputrānavaśiṣṭāṃśca somakān .. 84 ..
and likewise the sons of Draupadī and the remaining Somakas.
3.1.31.174
śikhaṃḍipramukhānanyānkhaṅgenāmārayadbahūn ..
He killed many others with his sword, foremost among them Śikhaṇḍin.
3.1.31.175
tadbhayāddvāraniryātānsarvāneva ca sainikān .. 85 ..
And all the soldiers who fled out of the gate in terror of him
3.1.31.176
prāpayāmāsaturmṛtyuṃ kṛtavarmakṛpā vubhau ..
were brought to their deaths by both Kṛtavarman and Kṛpa.
3.1.31.177
evaṃ nihatasainyaṃ tacchibiraṃ tairmahābalaiḥ .. 86 ..
Thus, its forces slain by those mighty warriors,
3.1.31.178
tatkṣaṇe śūnyamabhavattrijagatpralaye yathā ..
the camp instantly became desolate, as the three worlds do in the dissolution.
3.1.31.179
evaṃ hatvā tataḥ sarvāndroṇaputrādayastrayaḥ ..87..
Having slain them all in this manner, the three, headed by Droṇa's son,
3.1.31.180
niraguḥ śibirāttasmātpārthabhītā bhayāturāḥ ..
went forth from that camp, terrified of Pārtha and stricken with fear.
3.1.31.181
sarve pṛthakpṛthagdeśāndudruvuḥ śīghragāminaḥ .. 88 ..
Swiftly fleeing, they all dispersed to different regions.
3.1.31.182
atha drauṇiryayau viprā revātīraṃ manoramam ..
Then, O brahmins, Droṇa's son went to the charming bank of the Revā.
3.1.31.183
tatra hyanekasāhasrā ṛṣayo vedavādinaḥ .. 89 ..
There indeed, many thousands of ṛṣis who proclaimed the Vedas,
3.1.31.184
kathayaṃtaḥ kathāḥ puṇyāstapaścakruranuttamam ..
recounting sacred tales, were performing unsurpassed austerity.
3.1.31.185
tatrāyaṃ prayayau drauṇirṛṣīṇāmāśrameṣvatha .. 3.1.31.90 ..
There this son of Droṇa went to the hermitages of the ṛṣis.
3.1.31.186
praviṣṭamātre tasmiṃstu munayo brahmavādinaḥ ..
Yet the moment he entered, the sages who expounded Brahman,
3.1.31.187
drauṇerduścaritaṃ jñātvā prāhuryogabalena tam .. 91 ..
knowing the wicked deed of Droṇa's son through the power of yoga, said to him:
3.1.31.188
suptamā raṇakṛtpāpī drauṇe tvaṃ brāhmaṇādhamaḥ ..
“O son of Droṇa, you are a sinner who murders the sleeping, the vilest of brahmins!
3.1.31.189
tvaddarśanena hyasmākaṃ pātityaṃ bhavati dhruvam .. 92 ..
By the very sight of you, degradation certainly falls upon us.
3.1.31.190
tvatsaṃbhāṣaṇamātreṇa brahmahatyāyutaṃ bha vet ..
By merely conversing with you, ten thousand sins of killing a brahmin would arise.
3.1.31.191
ato'smadāśramebhyastvaṃ nirgaccha puruṣādhama .. 93 ..
Therefore depart from our hermitages, you vilest of men!”
3.1.31.192
ityabruvaṃstadā drauṇiṃ tatratyā munayo dvijāḥ ..
Thus the twice-born sages dwelling there spoke to the son of Droṇa.
3.1.31.193
itīritastato drauṇirmunibhirbrahma vādibhiḥ .. 94 ..
Addressed in this manner by the sages who expounded Brahman,
3.1.31.194
lajjito nilāttasmādāśramānmunisevitāt ..
Droṇa's son departed, ashamed, from that hermitage frequented by sages.
3.1.31.195
evaṃ kāśyāditīrtheṣu puṇyeṣu prayayau ca saḥ .. 95 ..
Thus he went to sacred tīrthas, beginning with Kāśī.
3.1.31.196
tatratatra dvijaiḥ sarvai rniṃdito'sau mahātmabhiḥ ..
Rebuked at every place by all the high-souled twice-born,
3.1.31.197
vyāsaṃ śaraṇamāpede prāyaścittacikīrṣayā .. 96 ..
he sought refuge with Vyāsa, desiring to perform an expiation.
3.1.31.198
tato badarikāraṇye samāsīnaṃ mahāmunim ..
Then, approaching the great sage Dvaipāyana
3.1.31.199
dvaipāyanaṃ samāgamya praṇanāma sabhaktikam .. 97 ..
who was seated in the forest of Badarī, he bowed down with devotion.
3.1.31.200
tato vyāso'bravīdenaṃ droṇācāryasutaṃ muniḥ ..
Then the sage Vyāsa spoke to him, the son of the master Droṇa:
