And what sin was committed by that Durācāra, O sage?

"O sages, let the sin of that Durācāra be heard,
3.1.36.11
snānena dhanuṣaḥ koṭau yathā muktaśca pātakāt .. 4 ..
and how he was freed from sin by a ritual ablution at the point of the bow (Dhanuṣkoṭi).
3.1.36.12
durācārābhidho vipro gautamītīramāśritaḥ ..
There was a certain brahmin named Durācāra residing on the bank of the Gautamī,

kaścidasti dvijāḥ pāpī krūrakarmarataḥ sadā .. 5 ..
a sinner, O brahmins, constantly devoted to cruel deeds.
3.1.36.14
brahmaghnaiśca surāpaiśca steyibhirgurutalpagaiḥ ..
Corrupted by association with killers of brahmins, drinkers of liquor,
3.1.36.15
tadā saṃsargaduṣṭo'sau taiḥ sākaṃ nyavasadvijāḥ ..6..
thieves, and violators of the guru's bed, he lived with them, O brahmins.
3.1.36.16
mahāpātakisaṃsargaṃ doṣeṇāsya dvijasya vai ..
Because of the fault of associating with great sinners, of this twice-born,
3.1.36.17
brāhmaṇyaṃ sakalaṃ naṣṭaṃ niḥśeṣeṇa dvijottamāḥ .. 7 ..
all brahminhood was lost completely, O best of brahmins.
3.1.36.18
mahāpātakibhiḥ sārddhaṃ dinamekaṃ tu yo dvijaḥ ..
The twice-born who respectfully lives with great sinners
3.1.36.19
nivasetsādaraṃ tasya tatkṣaṇādvai dvijanmanaḥ .. . 8 ..
for even a single day—from that very moment, of that twice-born
3.1.36.20
brāhmaṇasya turīyāṃśo naśyatyeva na saṃśayaḥ ..
brahmin, a fourth part is destroyed indeed; of this there is no doubt.
3.1.36.21
dvidinaṃ sevanātsparśāddarśanācchayanāttathā .. 9 ..
From two days of serving, touching, seeing, sleeping with,
3.1.36.22
bhojanātsaha paṃktau ca mahāpātakibhirdvijāḥ ..
and dining in the same row with great sinners, O brahmins,
3.1.36.23
dvitīyabhāgo naśyeta brāhmaṇasya na saṃśayaḥ .. 3.1.36.10 ..
the second portion of a brahmin is destroyed; of this there is no doubt.
3.1.36.24
tridinācca tṛtīyāṃśo naśyatyeva na saṃśayaḥ ..
From three days, the third part is destroyed indeed; of this there is no doubt.
3.1.36.25
caturdināccaturthāṃśo vilayaṃ yāti hi dhruvam .. 11 ..
From four days, the fourth part certainly dissolves.
3.1.36.26
ataḥ paraṃ tu taiḥ sākaṃ śayanāsanabhojanaiḥ ..
Beyond this, however, by sleeping, sitting, and dining with them,
3.1.36.27
tattulyapātakī bhūyānmahāpātakasaṃbhavāt .. 12 ..
he becomes an equal sinner to them, owing to the emergence of a great sin.
3.1.36.28
tena brāhmaṇyahīno'yaṃ durācārābhidho dvijāḥ ..
Because of that, this man named Durācāra was stripped of his brahminhood, O brahmins.
3.1.36.29
grasto'bhavadbhīṣaṇena vetālena balīyasā ..13..
[he] was seized by a fearsome, mighty vetāla.
3.1.36.30
asau paravaśastena vetālenātipīḍitaḥ ..
He, helpless and terribly tormented by that vetāla,
3.1.36.31
deśāddeśaṃ bhramanviprā vanāccaiva vanāṃtaram ..14..
wandered from country to country, O brahmins, and from one forest to another.
3.1.36.32
pūrvapuṇyavipākena daivayogena sa dvijaḥ ..
Through the ripening of former merit and through the working of destiny, that twice-born man,
3.1.36.33
rāmacaṃdradhanuṣkoṭiṃ mahāpātakanāśanīm .. 15 ..
pursued and possessed by that piśāca, O brahmins,
3.1.36.34
anudrutaḥ piśācena tenāviṣṭo yayau dvijāḥ ..
went to Rāmacandra’s Dhanuṣkoṭi, which destroys great sins.
3.1.36.35
nyamajjayatsa vetālo dhanuṣkoṭijale tvamum .. 16 ..
That vetāla submerged him into the waters of Dhanuṣkoṭi.
3.1.36.36
dhanuṣkoṭijale so'yaṃ vetālena praveśitaḥ ..
Having been made to enter the waters of Dhanuṣkoṭi by the vetāla,
3.1.36.37
udatiṣṭhatkṣaṇādeva vetālena vimocitaḥ .. 17 ..
he emerged in an instant, freed by the vetāla.
3.1.36.38
utthito'sau dvijo viprā dhanuṣkoṭijalāttadā ..
Having risen then from the waters of Dhanuṣkoṭi, O brahmins,
3.1.36.39
svastho vyaciṃtayatko'yaṃ deśo jaladhitīrataḥ .. 18 ..
that twice-born man, restored to health, reflected: “What region is this on the seashore?
3.1.36.40
kathaṃ mayāgatamiha gautamītīravāsinā ..
How have I, a dweller on the banks of the Gautamī, arrived here?”
3.1.36.41
iti ciṃtākulaḥ so'yaṃ dhanuṣkoṭinivāsinam .. 19 ..
Thus perplexed with anxiety, he approached the great-souled Dattātreya,
3.1.36.42
dattātreyaṃ mahātmānaṃ yogipravaramuttamam ..
the foremost and highest of yogins, who resided at Dhanuṣkoṭi;
3.1.36.43
samāgamya praṇamyāsau durācāro'bhyabhāṣata .. 3.1.36.20 ..
bowing down to him, that Durācāra spoke:
3.1.36.44
na jāne bhagavandeśaḥ katamo'yaṃ vadādhunā ..
“I do not know, O Lord, what country this is. Tell me now!
3.1.36.45
gautamītīranilayo durācārābhidho hyaham .. 21 ..
I am indeed Durācāra by name, residing on the bank of the Gautamī.
3.1.36.46
kṛpayā brūhi me brahmanmayātra kathamāgatam..
Out of compassion, tell me, O holy one: how did I come here?”
3.1.36.47
iti pṛṣṭo munistena durācāreṇa suvrataḥ .. 22 ..
Thus asked by that Durācāra, the sage of noble vows,
3.1.36.48
dhyātvā muhūrtamavadaddurācāraṃ ghṛṇānidhiḥ ..
a treasury of compassion, meditated for a moment and said to Durācāra:
3.1.36.49
mahāpātakisaṃsarge durācāra kṛte purā .. 23 ..
“O Durācāra, when contact with a great sinner was made formerly,
3.1.36.50
brāhmaṇyaṃ naṣṭamabhavadvetālastvāṃ tato'grahīt ..
[your] brahminhood was lost, and then a vetāla seized you.
3.1.36.51
tenāviṣṭastvamāyāto vivaśo'tra vimūḍhadhīḥ .. 24 ..
Possessed by him, helpless and bewildered in mind, you arrived here.
3.1.36.52
nyamajjayattvāṃ vetālo dhanuṣkoṭijale'tra tu ..
The vetāla plunged you into the waters of Dhanuṣkoṭi here;
3.1.36.53
tatra majjanamātreṇa vimuktaḥ pātakādbhavān .. 25 ..
and by the mere immersion there, you were freed from sin.
3.1.36.54
dhanuṣkoṭau tu ye snānaṃ puṇye kurvaṃti mānavāḥ ..
Those men who take a ritual ablution at sacred Dhanuṣkoṭi—
3.1.36.55
teṣāṃ naśyaṃti vai satyaṃ paṃcapātakasaṃcayāḥ .. 26 ..
truly, their accumulations of the five great sins are destroyed.
3.1.36.56
rāmacaṃdradhanuṣkoṭāvatra majjanamātrataḥ ..
By the mere immersion here at Rāmacandra’s Dhanuṣkoṭi,
3.1.36.57
mahāpātakisaṃsargadoṣaste vilayaṃ yayau .. 27 ..
the fault of contact with a great sinner has gone to dissolution.
3.1.36.58
tannāśādeva vetālastvāṃ muktvā vilayaṃ gataḥ ..
Through that very destruction, the vetāla released you and vanished.
3.1.36.59
tvāmagrahīdyo vetālaḥ purāyaṃ brāhmaṇo'bhavat .. 28 ..
The vetāla who seized you was formerly a brahmin.
3.1.36.60
so'yaṃ bhādrapade māse kṛṣṇapakṣe mahālayam ..
In the month of Bhādrapada, during the dark fortnight, he did not perform
3.1.36.61
pārvaṇena vidhānena pitṝṇāṃ nākaronmudā .. 29 ..
the Mahālaya rite for the ancestors with joy, according to the rule of the Pārvaṇa rites.
3.1.36.62
tena svapitṛbhiḥ śapto vetālatvamagādayam ..
Therefore, cursed by his ancestors, he became a vetāla.
3.1.36.63
sopi cāsya dhanuṣkoṭeravalokanamātrataḥ .. 3.1.36.30 ..
Yet even he, by merely beholding this Dhanuṣkoṭi,
3.1.36.64
vetālatvaṃ vihāyeha viṣṇulokama vāptavān ..
abandoned his vetāla state here and attained the world of Viṣṇu.
3.1.36.65
ato bhādrapade māse kṛṣṇapakṣe mahālayam .. 31 ..
Therefore, in the month of Bhādrapada, during the dark fortnight,
3.1.36.66
uddiśya svapitṝnye tu na kurvantyatilobhataḥ ..
those who, out of excessive greed, do not perform the Mahālaya rite intended for their ancestors—
3.1.36.67
mahālobhayutāste'ddhā vetālāḥ syurna saṃśayaḥ .. 32 ..
filled with immense greed, they will certainly become vetālas; there is no doubt.
3.1.36.68
tasmādbhādrapade māse kṛṣṇapakṣe mahālayam ..
Therefore, in the month of Bhādrapada, during the dark fortnight,
3.1.36.69
pitṝnuddiśya śaktyā ye brāhmaṇānvedapāragān .. 33 ..
those who, according to their ability, feed brahmins who have mastered the Vedas
3.1.36.70
bhojayeyurmahānnena na te viṃdaṃti durgatim ..
with abundant food for the sake of the ancestors, do not suffer an evil state.
3.1.36.71
yastu bhādrapade māse kṛṣṇapakṣe mahālayam .. 34 ..
And in the month of Bhādrapada, during the dark fortnight,
3.1.36.72
svaśaktyanuguṇaṃ vipramekaṃ dvau trīnakiṃcanaḥ ..
even a destitute man who feeds one, two, or three brahmins according to his ability
3.1.36.73
bhojayennahi daurgatyaṃ bhavedasya kadācana .. 35 ..
for the Mahālaya, shall never suffer misfortune.
3.1.36.74
ayaṃ bhādrapade māse pitṝṇāmanupāsanāt ..
This brahmin who seized you, a sinner, went to the state of a vetāla
3.1.36.75
yayau vetālatāṃ vipro yastvāṃ jagrāha pāpinam .. 36 ..
due to neglecting the worship of the ancestors in the month of Bhādrapada.
3.1.36.76
kālo bhādrapadamāsamārabhya vṛścikāvadhi ..
The time for the Mahālaya, starting from the month of Bhādrapada up to Vṛścika,
3.1.36.77
mahālayasya kathito munibhistattvadarśibhiḥ .. 37 ..
has been declared by sages who see reality.
3.1.36.78
māso bhādrapadaḥ kālastatrāpi hi viśiṣyate ..
Even therein, the month of Bhādrapada is distinguished as the proper time;
3.1.36.79
kṛṣṇa pakṣo viśiṣṭaḥ syāddurācāraka tatra vai .. 38 ..
and therein, O Durācāra, the dark fortnight is superior.
3.1.36.80
tasmiñchubhe kṛṣṇapakṣe prathamāyāṃ tathā tithau ..
In that auspicious dark fortnight, on the first lunar day,
3.1.36.81
śrāddhaṃ mahālayaṃ kuryādyo naro bhaktipūrvakam.. 39 ..
whichever man performs the Mahālaya ancestral rite with devotion,
3.1.36.82
tasya prīṇāti bhagavānpāvakaḥ sarvapāvanaḥ ..
the Lord Fire, purifier of all, is pleased with him.

tasmai ca jvalano devaḥ sarvaiśvaryaṃ dadātyapi ..
And the blazing god grants him all sovereignty.
3.1.36.85
prathamāyāṃ tithau martyo yo na kuryānmahālayam.. 41 ..
Whichever mortal does not perform the Mahālaya rite on the first lunar day,
3.1.36.86
vahnirgṛhaṃ dahettasya śriyaṃ kṣetrādikaṃ tathā ..
fire will burn his house, as well as his wealth, fields, and so forth.
3.1.36.87
vedajñe brāhmaṇe bhukte prathamāyāṃ mahālaye .. 42 ..
When a Veda-knowing brahmin has eaten at the Mahālaya on the first lunar day,
3.1.36.88
daśa kalpasahasrāṇi pitaro yāṃti tṛptatām ..
the ancestors attain satisfaction for ten thousand kalpas.”
3.1.36.89
dvitīyāyāṃ tu yo bhaktyā kuryācchrāddhaṃ mahālayam .. 43 ..
Moreover, he who performs the Mahālaya śrāddha with devotion on the second lunar day—
3.1.36.90
tasya prīṇāti bhagavānbhavānīpatirīśvaraḥ ..
the blessed Lord, the consort of Bhavānī, is pleased with him.
3.1.36.91
sa kailāsamavāpnoti śivena saha modate.. 44 ..

3.1.36.94
tasya vai kupitaḥ śaṃbhurnāśayedbrahmavarcasam ..
Śambhu, indeed enraged, will destroy his spiritual radiance,

rauravaṃ kālasūtrākhyaṃ narakaṃ cāsya dāsyati .. 46..
and will cast him into the hell named Raurava and Kālasūtra.
3.1.36.96
vedajñe brāhmaṇe bhukte dvitīyāyāṃ mahālaye ..
When a Veda-knowing brahmin is fed in the Mahālaya on the second lunar day,
