The seers said:
3.1.38.2
sūta kadruḥ kathaṃ muktā kṣīrakuṃḍanimajjanāt ..
“O Sūta, how was Kadru freed by plunging into Kṣīrakuṇḍa?
3.1.38.3
chalaṃ kathaṃ kṛtavatī sapatnyāṃ pāpaniścayā .. 1 ..
How did she, whose resolve was sinful, act deceitfully toward her co-wife?
3.1.38.4
kasya putrī ca sā kadrūḥ sapatnīsā ca kasya vai ..
Whose daughter was that Kadru, and whose co-wife was she indeed?
3.1.38.5
kimarthamajayatkadrūḥ svasapatnīṃ chalena tu ..
For what purpose did Kadru conquer her own co-wife through deceit?
3.1.38.6
etannaḥ śraddadhānānāṃ brūhi sūta kṛpānidhe .. 2 ..
Tell this to us who are faithful, O Sūta, treasure-house of compassion!”
3.1.38.7
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
3.1.38.8
śṛṇudhvaṃ munayaḥ sarve itihāsaṃ mahāphalam ..
“Hear, all you sages, the narrative that brings great fruit.
3.1.38.9
purā kṛtayuge viprāḥ prajāpatisute ubhe .. 3 ..
In ancient times, in the Kṛtayuga, O brahmins, the two daughters of Prajāpati,
3.1.38.10
kadrūśca vinatā ceti bhaginyau saṃbabhūvatuḥ ..
Kadru and Vinatā, were sisters.
3.1.38.11
bhārye te kaśyapasyāstāṃ kadrūśca vinatā tathā .. 4 ..
They were the two wives of Kaśyapa, namely Kadru and Vinatā.
3.1.38.12
vinatā suṣuve putrāvaruṇaṃ garuḍaṃ tathā ..
Vinatā gave birth to two sons: Aruṇa and Garuḍa.
3.1.38.13
bharttuḥ sakāśātkadrūśca lebhe sarpānbahūnsutān .. .. 5 ..
And Kadru obtained from her husband many sons, the serpents,
3.1.38.14
anaṃtavāsukimukhānviṣadarpasamanvitān ..
headed by Ananta and Vāsuki, endowed with poison and pride.
3.1.38.15
ekadā tu bhaginyau te kadrūśca vinatā tathā .. 6 ..
Once, those two sisters, Kadru and Vinatā,
3.1.38.16
apaśyatāṃ samāyāṃtamuccaiḥśravasamaṃ tikāt ..
saw Uccaiḥśravas approaching nearby.
3.1.38.17
vilokya kadrūsturagaṃ vinatāmidamabravīt .. 7 ..
Having seen the horse, Kadru said this to Vinatā:
3.1.38.18
śveto'śvavālo nīlo vā vinate brūhi tattvataḥ..
‘Is the horse's tail white or black? Tell me the truth, O Vinatā!’”
3.1.38.19
ityuktvā vinatā viprāḥ kadrūṃ tāmidamabra vīt ..
Having said this, O brahmins, Vinatā said this to Kadrū:
3.1.38.20
turaṃgaḥ śvetavālo me pratibhāti sumadhyame ..
“The horse's tail appears white to me, O woman of slender waist.
3.1.38.21
kiṃ vā tvaṃ manyase kadrūriti tāṃ vinatā'bravīt .. 9 ..
Or what do you think, Kadrū?” Vinatā said to her.
3.1.38.22
pṛṣṭvaivaṃ vinatāṃ kadrūrbabhāṣe svamataṃ ca sā ..
Having thus questioned Vinatā, Kadrū also spoke her own opinion:
3.1.38.23
kṛṣṇavālamahaṃ manye hayamenamaniṃdite .. 3.1.38.10 ..
“I consider the tail of this horse to be black, O blameless one.”
3.1.38.24
tataḥ parājaye kṛtvā dāsībhāvaṃ paṇaṃ mithaḥ ..
Then, having mutually made a wager of servitude upon defeat,
3.1.38.25
vyatiṣṭhetāṃ mahābhāge sapatnyau te dvijottamāḥ .. .. 11 ..
those two fortunate co-wives stood firm [by it], O best of brahmins.
3.1.38.26
tataḥ kadrūrnijasutānvāsukipramukhānahīn ..
Then Kadrū [spoke] to her sons, the serpents headed by Vāsuki:
3.1.38.27
tasyā nāhaṃ yathā dāsī tathā kuruta putrakāḥ .. 12 ..
“Act in such a way, my sons, that I do not become her slave!”
3.1.38.28
tasyābhīpsitasiddhyarthamityavocadbhṛśā turā ..
For the attainment of her desired goal, greatly agitated, she said:
3.1.38.29
yuṣmābhiruccaiḥśravaso bālaḥ pracchādyatāmiti .. 13 ..
“The tail of Uccaiḥśravas must be covered by you.”
3.1.38.30
nāṃgīcakrurmataṃ tasyā nāgāḥ kadrū ruṣā tadā..
The serpents did not accept her proposal; then Kadrū, in anger,
3.1.38.31
aśapatkupitā putrāñjvalaṃtī roṣamūrcchitā .. 14 ..
enraged, burning, and faint with fury, cursed her sons:
3.1.38.32
pārīkṣitasya sarve'ddhā yūyaṃ satre mariṣyatha ..
“You shall all surely die at the sacrificial session of the son of Parīkṣit!”
3.1.38.33
iti śāpe kṛte mātrā trastaḥ karkoṭakastadā .. 15 ..
When this curse was pronounced by their mother, Karkoṭaka was terrified then;
3.1.38.34
praṇamya pādayoḥ kadrūṃ dīno vacanamabravīt ..
bowing at Kadrū's feet, he spoke these words despondently:
3.1.38.35
ahamuccaiḥśravovālaṃ vidhāsyāmyaṃjanaprabham .. 16 ..
“I will make the tail of Uccaiḥśravas have the radiance of collyrium.
3.1.38.36
mā bhīraṃba tvayā kāryetyavādīcchāpaviklavaḥ ..
Do not fear, mother!” he said, distraught over the curse.
3.1.38.37
śvetamuccaiḥśravovālaṃ tataḥ karkoṭakoragaḥ .. 17 ..
Then the serpent Karkoṭaka covered the white tail of Uccaiḥśravas
3.1.38.38
chādayitvā svabhogena vyatanodaṃjanadyutim ..
with his own body and made it gleam like collyrium.
3.1.38.39
atha te vinatākadrvau dāsye kṛtapaṇe ubhe .. 18 ..
Then Vinatā and Kadrū, both having made a wager on servitude,
3.1.38.40
devarājahayaṃ draṣṭuṃ saṃraṃbhādabhyagaccha tām ..
went with eager haste to see the horse of the king of gods.
3.1.38.41
śaśāṃkaśaṃkhamāṇikyamuktairāvatakāraṇam .. 19 ..
Passing over the ocean, the lord of rivers, the source of the moon, / the conch, ruby, pearl, and Airāvata,
3.1.38.42
yugāṃtakālaśayanaṃ yoganidrākṛto hareḥ ..
which is the couch of Hari at the dissolution of an age / when he adopts yogic sleep,
3.1.38.43
atītya kadrūvinate samudraṃ saritāṃ patim .. 3.1.38.20 ..
Kadrū and Vinatā crossed over the ocean, the lord of rivers,
3.1.38.44
dadṛśaturhayaṃ gatvā devarājasya vāhanam ..
and going there, they saw the horse, the mount of the king of gods.
3.1.38.45
kṛṣṇavālaṃ hayaṃ dṛṣṭvā vinatā duḥkhitā'bhavat .. 21 ..
Seeing the horse with a black tail, Vinatā became distressed.
3.1.38.46
duḥkhitāṃ vinatāṃ kadrūrdāsīkṛtye nyayuṃkta sā ..
Kadrū assigned the distressed Vinatā to the work of a slave.
3.1.38.47
etasminnaṃtare tārkṣyo'pyaṃḍamudbhidya vahnivat .. 22 ..
In the meantime, Tārkṣya, breaking open the egg like fire,
3.1.38.48
prādurbabhūva vipreṃdrā girimātraśarīravān ..
appeared, O chiefs of brahmins, his body as large as a mountain.
3.1.38.49
dṛṣṭvā taddehamāhātmyamabhūttrastaṃ jagattrayam ..23..
Seeing the majesty of his body, the three worlds became terrified.
3.1.38.50
tatastaṃ tuṣṭuvurdevā garuḍaṃ pakṣiṇāṃ varam ..
Then the gods praised Garuḍa, the best of birds.
3.1.38.51
dṛṣṭvā taddehamāhātmyaṃ trastaṃ syādbhuvanatrayam .. 24 ..
Thinking: “Seeing the majesty of this body, the three worlds would be terrified,”
3.1.38.52
ityālocyopasaṃhṛtya dehamatyaṃtabhīṣaṇam ..
he withdrew his exceedingly terrifying form,
3.1.38.53
aruṇaṃ pṛṣṭhamāropya māturaṃtikamabhyagāt .. 25 ..
placed Aruṇa on his back, and approached his mother.
3.1.38.54
athāha vinatāṃ kadrūḥ praṇatāmativihvalām ..
Then Kadrū said to Vinatā, who was bowed down and deeply distressed:
3.1.38.55
ceṭi nāgālayaṃ gaṃtumudyogo mama vartate .. 26 ..
“Slave woman, I intend to go to the abode of the serpents;
3.1.38.56
tvatputro garuḍoto māṃ matputrāṃśca vahatviti ..
let your son Garuḍa carry me and my sons!”
3.1.38.57
tataśca vinatā putraṃ garuḍaṃ pratyabhāṣata .. 27 ..
Then Vinatā spoke to her son Garuḍa:
3.1.38.58
ahaṃ kadrūmimāṃ vakṣye tvaṃ sarpānvaha tatsutān ..
“I shall carry this Kadrū; you carry the snakes, her sons.”
3.1.38.59
tatheti garuḍo mātuḥ pratyagṛhṇadvaco dvijāḥ .. 28 ..
“So be it,” Garuḍa agreed to his mother's word, O brahmins.
3.1.38.60
avahadvinatā kadrūṃ sarvāṃstāngaruḍo'vahat ..
Vinatā carried Kadrū, and Garuḍa carried all of them.
3.1.38.61
ravisāmīpyagāḥ sarpāstatkarairāhatāstadā .. 29 ..
Then the serpents, coming close to the sun, were struck by its rays.
3.1.38.62
astauṣīdvajriṇaṃ kadrūḥ sutānāṃ tāpaśāṃtaye ..
Kadrū praised the wielder of the thunderbolt to appease the burning heat of her sons.
3.1.38.63
sarvatāpaṃ jalāsārairdevarājo'pyaśāmayata .. 3.1.38.30 ..
The king of gods quenched all their burning heat with downpours of water.
3.1.38.64
nīyamānāstadā sarpā garuḍena balīyasā ..
Then the serpents being carried by the mighty Garuḍa,
3.1.38.65
gatvā taṃ deśamacirādavadanvinatāsutam .. 31 ..
having soon reached that region, said to the son of Vinatā:
3.1.38.66
vayaṃ dvīpāṃtaraṃ gaṃtuṃ sarve draṣṭuṃ kṛtatvarāḥ ..
“We are all eager to go and see another island;
3.1.38.67
vaha tvamasmāngaruḍa ceṭīsuta tataḥ kṣaṇāt .. 32 ..
carry us there at once, Garuḍa, you son of a slave woman!”
3.1.38.68
tato mātara maprākṣīdvinatāṃ garuḍo dvijāḥ ..
Then Garuḍa asked his mother Vinatā, O brahmins:
3.1.38.69
ahaṃ kasmādvahāmīmāṃstvaṃ cemāṃ vahase sadā .. 33 ..
“Why do I carry these, and why do you always carry her?
3.1.38.70
ceṭīputreti māmete ki bhaṇaṃti sarīsṛpāḥ ..
Why do these crawling creatures call me ‘son of a slave woman’?
3.1.38.71
sarvametadvada tvaṃ me mātastattvena pṛcchataḥ .. 34 ..
Tell me all this in truth, mother, as I ask you.”
3.1.38.72
pṛṣṭaivaṃ jananī tena garuḍaṃ prābravītsutam ..
Thus questioned by him, the mother spoke to her son Garuḍa:
3.1.38.73
bhaginyā krūrayā putra cchalenāhaṃ parājitā .. 35 ..
“By my cruel sister, my son, I was defeated through deceit.
3.1.38.74
tasyā dāsī bhavāmyadya ceṭīputrastato bhavān ..
I am now her slave woman, and therefore you are the son of a slave woman.
3.1.38.75
atastvaṃ vahase sarpānvahāmyenāmahaṃ sadā .. 36 ..
Therefore you carry the serpents, and I always carry her.”
3.1.38.76
ityādi sarvavṛttāṃtamādito'smai nyavedayat ..
She related to him the whole account from the beginning.
3.1.38.77
atha tāṃ garuḍo'vā dīnmātaraṃ vinatāsutaḥ .. 37 ..
Then Garuḍa, the son of Vinatā, said to his mother:
3.1.38.78
asmāddāsyādvimokṣārthaṃ kiṃ kāryaṃ te mayādhunā ..
“What must I do now for the sake of your release from this servitude?”
3.1.38.79
iti pṛṣṭā sutenātha vinatā tamabhāṣata .. 38 ..
Thus questioned by her son, Vinatā then spoke to him:
3.1.38.80
sarpānpṛcchasva garuḍa mama mātṛvimokṣaṇe ..
"Ask the serpents, Garuḍa, concerning my release from bondage:
3.1.38.81
yuṣmākaṃ mātuḥ kiṃ kāryaṃ mayeti vadatādhunā .. 39 ..
'Tell [me] now: what task must I perform for you, my mother's [masters]?'"
3.1.38.82
iti mātrā samudito garuḍaḥ pannagānprati ..
Addressed in this way by his mother, Garuḍa went to the serpents
3.1.38.83
gatvā'pṛcchadvija śreṣṭhāste'pyenamavadaṃstadā .. 3.1.38.40 ..
and asked, O best of brahmins; they too then said to him:
3.1.38.84
yadā hariṣyase śīghraṃ sudhāṃ tvamamarālayāt ..
"When you quickly bring nectar from the abode of the immortals,
3.1.38.85
dāsyānmuktā bhavenmātā vainateya tavādya hi .. 41 ..
then indeed, O Vainateya, shall your mother be freed today from bondage."
3.1.38.86
tato mātaramāgamya garuḍaḥ praṇato'bravīt ..
Then, having returned to his mother, Garuḍa bowed and said:
3.1.38.87
sudhāmaṃba mamānetuṃ gacchato bhakṣyamarpaya .. 42 ..
"O Mother, provide me food as I depart to bring the nectar."
3.1.38.88
itīritā sutaṃ prāha mātā taṃ vinatā sutam ..
Thus spoken to, his mother Vinatā said to her son:
3.1.38.89
samudramadhye vartaṃte śabarāḥ katicitsuta .. 43 ..
"In the middle of the ocean there dwell some Śabaras, my son.
3.1.38.90
tānbhakṣayitvā śabarānamṛtaṃ tvamihānaya ..
Having devoured those Śabaras, bring the nectar here.
3.1.38.91
tatra kaściddvijaḥ kāmī śavarīsaṃgakautukī .. 44 ..
There is a certain lustful twice-born there, eager for union with a Śabara woman.
3.1.38.92
tyaja taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ kaṃṭhaṃ dahaṃtaṃ brahmatejasā ..
Release that brahmin, who will burn your throat with his brahminical splendor.
3.1.38.93
pakṣādīni tavāṃgāni pāṃtu devā marunmukhāḥ .. 45 ..
May the gods, led by the Maruts, protect your wings and other limbs!"
3.1.38.94
iti svamāturāśīrbhirgaruḍo vardhito yayau ..
Strengthened thus by his mother's blessings, Garuḍa went forth.
3.1.38.95
śabarālayamabhyetya tasya bhakṣaya to mukham .. 46 ..
Approaching the home of the Śabaras, as he ate, into his open mouth
3.1.38.96
āvṛtaṃ prāviśanvyādhā vayāṃsīva darīṃ gireḥ ..
the hunters entered, like birds into a mountain cavern.
3.1.38.97
atha sa brāhmaṇo'pyāgāttatkaṃṭhaṃ munipuṃgavāḥ .. 47 ..
Then that brahmin also entered his throat, O best of sages.
3.1.38.98
kaṇṭhaṃ dahantaṃ vipraṃ tamuvāca vinatāsutaḥ ..
To that vipra who was burning his throat, the son of Vinatā said:
3.1.38.99
vipra pāpo'pyavadhyo hi niryāhi tvamato bahiḥ .. 48 ..
"O vipra, even if sinful, you must not be killed; come out of here!"
3.1.38.100
evamuktastadā vipro garuḍaṃ pratyabhāṣata ..
Thus addressed, the vipra then replied to Garuḍa:
3.1.38.101
kirātī mama bhāryāpi nirgaṃtavyā mayā saha .. 49 ..
"My wife, a Kirāta woman, must also come out along with me."
3.1.38.102
evamastviti taṃ vipramuvāca patageśvaraḥ ..
"So be it," the lord of birds said to that vipra.
3.1.38.103
tataḥ sa garuḍo vipramujjagāra sabhāryakam .. 3.1.38.50 ..
Then Garuḍa spat out the vipra together with his wife.
3.1.38.104
vipro'pyabhīpsitāndeśānniṣādyā saha niryayau ..
The vipra too departed with the Niṣāda woman to regions of his choosing.
3.1.38.105
śabarānbhakṣayitvā'tha garuḍaḥ pakṣiṇāṃ varaḥ .. 51 ..
Then, having devoured the Śabaras, Garuḍa, the best of birds,
3.1.38.106
ātmanaḥ pitaraṃ vegātkaśyapaṃ samupeyivān ..
swiftly approached his father Kaśyapa.
3.1.38.107
kutra yāsīti tatpṛṣṭo garuḍastama bhāṣata .. 52 ..
Asked by him, "Where are you going?", Garuḍa replied to him:
3.1.38.108
māturdāsyavimokṣāya sudhāmāhartumāgamam ..
"I have come to fetch the nectar to release my mother from bondage.
3.1.38.109
bahūnkirātāñjagdhvāpi tṛptirmama na jāyate .. 53 ..
Even after consuming many Kirātas, I feel no satisfaction.
3.1.38.110
aparyaṃtakṣudhā brahmanbādhate māmaha rniśam ..
A boundless hunger afflicts me day and night, O holy one.
3.1.38.111
tannivṛttipradaṃ bhakṣyaṃ mamārpaya tapodhana .. 54 ..
Bestow on me food that will relieve it, O rich in austerity,
3.1.38.112
yenāhaṃ śaknuyāṃ tāta sudhāmāhartumojasā ..
so that I may be able, Father, to fetch the nectar with my strength."
3.1.38.113
itīritaḥ sutaṃ prāha kaśyapo vinatodbhavam .. .. 55 ..
Addressed in this way, Kaśyapa spoke to his son born of Vinatā.
3.1.38.114
..kaśyapa uvāca .. ..
Kaśyapa said:
3.1.38.115
munirvibhāvasurnāmnā purāsīttasya sānujaḥ ..
"Formerly there was a sage named Vibhāvasu; he had a younger brother,
3.1.38.116
supratīka iti bhrātā tāvubhau vaṃśavairiṇau .. 56 ..
a brother named Supratīka. Both of them became bitter enemies over family property.
3.1.38.117
anyonyaṃ śepaturviprā mahākrodhasamākulau ..
Overcome with great fury, the two twice-born cursed each other:
3.1.38.118
gajo'bhavatsupratīkaḥ kūrmo'bhūcca vibhāvasuḥ .. 57 ..
Supratīka became an elephant, and Vibhāvasu became a tortoise.
3.1.38.119
evaṃ vittavivādāttau śepaturbhrātarau mithaḥ ..
Thus, due to a dispute over wealth, the two brothers cursed each other.
3.1.38.120
gajaḥ ṣaḍyo janocchrāyo dviguṇāyāmasaṃyutaḥ .. 58 ..
The elephant is six yojanas in height and twice as long in length.
3.1.38.121
kūrmastriyojanocchrayo daśayojanavistṛtaḥ ..
The tortoise is three yojanas in height and ten yojanas in breadth.
3.1.38.122
baddhavairāvubhāvetau sarasyasminvihaṃgama .. 59 ..
These two, having formed mutual enmity, [dwell] in this lake, O bird.
3.1.38.123
pūrvavairamanusmṛtya yudhyete jetumicchayā ..
Remembering their past enmity, they fight with the desire to conquer.
3.1.38.124
ubhau tau bhakṣayitvā tvaṃ sudhāmāhara tṛptimān .. 3.1.38.60 ..
Having devoured both of them, and being fully sated, fetch the nectar."
3.1.38.125
evaṃ pitreritaḥ pakṣī gatvā tadgajakacchapau ..
Thus instructed by his father, the bird went to that elephant and tortoise.
3.1.38.126
samuddhatya mahākāyau mahābalaparākramau .. 61 ..
Lifting up those two of gigantic body and immense strength and prowess,
3.1.38.127
vahannakhābhyāṃ saṃtīrthaṃ viḻaṃbābhidhamabhyagāt ..
carrying them in his talons, he approached the excellent sacred ford called Vilamba.
3.1.38.128
tatrāgataṃ samālokya pakṣirājaṃ dvijosamāḥ .. 62 ..
Seeing the king of birds arrived there, O equals of the twice-born,
3.1.38.129
tattīrajo mahāvṛkṣo rohiṇākhyo mahocchrayaḥ ..
a very tall, great tree growing on its bank, named Rohiṇa,
3.1.38.130
vainateyamidaṃ prāha mahābalaparākramam .. 63 ..
said this to Vainateya of immense strength and prowess:
3.1.38.131
enāmāruha macchākhāṃ śatayojanamāyatām ..
"Alight on this branch of mine, a hundred yojanas long;
3.1.38.132
sthitvātra gajakūrmau tvaṃ bhakṣayasva khagottama ..64 ..
perched here, devour the elephant and tortoise, O best of birds."
3.1.38.133
ityuktastaruṇā pakṣī sa tatrāste manojavaḥ ..
Thus addressed by the tree, that bird swift as thought settled there.
3.1.38.134
tadbhārātsā taroḥ śākhā bhagnā'bhūddvijasattamāḥ .. 65 ..
Under his weight, that branch of the tree broke, O best of brahmins.
3.1.38.135
vālakhilyamunīṃstasmillam̐bamānānadhomukhān ..
Seeing the Vālakhilya sages hanging head-downward on it,
3.1.38.136
dṛṣṭvā tatpātaśaṃkāvām̐stāṃ śākhāṃ garuḍo'grahīt .. 66 ..
fearing they might fall, Garuḍa seized that branch.
3.1.38.137
gajakūrmo ca tāṃ śākhāṃ gṛhītvā yāṃtamaṃ bare ..
As he flew in the sky carrying the elephant, the tortoise, and that branch,
3.1.38.138
pitā tasyābravīttatra garuḍaṃ vinatāsutam .. 67 ..
his father spoke there to Garuḍa, the son of Vinatā.
3.1.38.139
tyajemāṃ nirjane śaile śākhāṃ taṃ vinatodbhava ..
"O son of Vinatā, drop this branch on a deserted mountain."
3.1.38.140
ityuktaḥ sa tathā gatvā śākhāṃ niṣpuruṣe nage .. 68 ..
Thus addressed, he went and deposited the branch on an uninhabited mountain;
3.1.38.141
vinyasyābhakṣayatpakṣī tau tadā gajakacchapau ..
then the bird devoured both the elephant and the tortoise.
3.1.38.142
athotpātaḥ samabhavattasminnavasare divi .. 69 ..
Now at that moment, an evil omen appeared in heaven.
3.1.38.143
dṛṣṭvotpātaṃ balārātiḥ papraccha svapurohitam ..
Seeing the portent, the enemy of Bala asked his own priest,
3.1.38.144
utpātakāraṇaṃ jīva kimatreti punaḥpunaḥ ..
again and again: "O Jīva, what is the cause of this portent here?"
3.1.38.145
bṛhaspatistadā śakraṃ provāca dvijasattamāḥ .. 3.1.38.70 ..
Then, O best of brahmins, Bṛhaspati spoke to Śakra:
3.1.38.146
.. bṛhaspatiruvāca .. ..
Bṛhaspati said:
3.1.38.147
kāśyapo hi muniḥ pūrvamayajatkratunā hare ..71..
"Formerly, O Hari, the sage Kāśyapa performed a sacrificial rite;
3.1.38.148
sarvānnṛṣīnsurānsiddhānyakṣāngaṃdharvakinnarān ..
all the seers, gods, siddhas, yakṣas, gandharvas, and kinnaras
3.1.38.149
yajñasaṃbhārasiddhyarthaṃ preṣayāmāsa sa dvijāḥ.. 72 ..
he dispatched, O brahmins, to secure the sacrificial provisions.
3.1.38.150
vālakhilyānsasaṃbhārānhrasvānaṃguṣṭhamātrakān ..
Seeing the Vālakhilyas, carrying their provisions, short [and] only thumb-sized,
3.1.38.151
majjato goṣpadajale dṛṣṭvā hasitavānbhavān .. 73 ..
sinking in the water of a cow's footprint, you laughed.
3.1.38.152
bhavatāvamatāḥ kruddhā vālakhilyāstadā hare ..
Insulted by you, the Vālakhilyas, enraged then, O Hari,
3.1.38.153
juhuvuryajñavahnau te krodhena jvalitānanāḥ .. 74 ..
offered oblations into the sacrificial fire, their faces blazing with anger:
3.1.38.154
deveṃdrabhayadaḥ śatruḥ kaśyapasya suto'stviti ..
'May there be an enemy of the lord of the gods, causing fear to him, born as a son to Kaśyapa!'
3.1.38.155
tasya putro'dya garuḍaḥ sudhāharaṇakautukī .. 75 ..
Today his son Garuḍa, eager to carry off the nectar,
3.1.38.156
samāgacchati taddheturayamutpāta āgataḥ ..
is approaching. Due to that, this portent has appeared."
3.1.38.157
ityuktaḥ so'bravīdiṃdro devānagnipurogamān .. 76 ..
Thus addressed, Indra spoke to the gods headed by Agni:
3.1.38.158
sudhāmāhartumāyāti pakṣī sā rakṣyatāmiti ..
"A bird is coming to steal the nectar; let it be guarded!"
3.1.38.159
itīṃdrapreritā devā rarakṣuḥ sāyudhāḥ sudhām .. 77 ..
Thus urged by Indra, the gods, bearing weapons, guarded the nectar.
3.1.38.160
pakṣirājastadābhyāgāddevānāyudhadhāriṇaḥ ..
The king of birds then approached the gods who bore weapons;
3.1.38.161
mahābalaṃ te garuḍaṃ dṛṣṭvā'kampaṃta vai surāḥ .. 78 ..
seeing Garuḍa of mighty strength, the gods indeed trembled.
3.1.38.162
garuḍasya surāṇāṃ ca tato yuddhamabhūnmahat ..
Then a great battle took place between Garuḍa and the gods;
3.1.38.163
akhaṃḍi pakṣituṇḍena bhauvano'mṛtapālakaḥ .. 79 ..
Bhauvana, the guardian of the nectar, was torn to pieces by the beak of the bird.
3.1.38.164
tadā nijaghnugarruḍaṃ devāḥ śastrairanekaśaḥ ..
Then the gods repeatedly struck Garuḍa with various weapons;
3.1.38.165
atīva garuḍo devairbādhitaḥ śastrapāṇibhiḥ .. 3.1.38.80 ..
exceedingly afflicted by the gods with weapons in their hands,
3.1.38.166
pakṣābhyāmākṣipaddūre devānagnipurogamān ..
Garuḍa hurled the gods headed by Agni far away with his two wings.
3.1.38.167
tatpakṣavikṣitā devāstadā paramakopanāḥ .. 81 ..
Cast off by his wings, the gods then became exceedingly enraged,
3.1.38.168
nārācānbhiṃdi pālāṃśca nānāśastrāṇi cākṣipan ..
and discharged iron arrows, bhindipālas, and diverse weapons.
3.1.38.169
tatastu garuḍo vegāddevadṛṣṭivilopinīm .. 82 ..
Then, with swift speed, the son of Vinatā raised dust
3.1.38.170
dhūlimutthāpayāmāsa pakṣābhyāṃ vinatāsutaḥ .. vāyunā
śamayāmāsustānpāṃsūṃstridaśottamāḥ .. 83 ..
with his wings that obstructed the gods' sight; / the best of the thirty [gods] quelled that dust with wind.
3.1.38.171
rudrānvasūṃstathādityānmaruto'nyānsurāṃstathā ..
The Rudras, the Vasus, likewise the Ādityas, the Maruts, and the other gods,
3.1.38.172
garuḍaḥ pakṣatuṃḍābhyāṃ vyathitānakaroddvijāḥ .. 84 ..
Garuḍa distressed with his wings and beak, O brahmins.
3.1.38.173
palāyiteṣu deveṣu so'drākṣījjvalanaṃ puraḥ ..
When the gods had fled, he beheld a fire before him;
3.1.38.174
jvalaṃtaṃ paritastvagniṃ śamāpayitumudyayau.. 85 ..
and he set out to extinguish the fire that was blazing all around.
3.1.38.175
sa sahasramukho bhūtvā taiḥ pibañchataśo nadīḥ ..
Having assumed a thousand mouths, drinking hundreds of rivers with them,
3.1.38.176
tamagniṃ nāśayāmāsa taiḥ payobhistvarānvitaḥ .. 86 ..
he swiftly destroyed that fire with those waters.
3.1.38.177
sitadhāraṃ bhramaccakraṃ sudhārakṣakamaṃtike ..
Seeing nearby a sharp-edged, revolving wheel that guarded the nectar,
3.1.38.178
dṛṣṭvā tadariraṃdhreṇa saṃkṣiptāṃgotarāviśat .. 87 ..
he contracted his body and entered through the space between its spokes.
3.1.38.179
tato dadarśa dvau sarpo vyaktāsyau bhīṣaṇākṛtī...
Then he saw two serpents with open mouths and terrifying forms,
3.1.38.180
yābhyāṃ dṛṣṭopi bhasma syāttau sarpau garuḍastadā .. 88 ..
by whom even a glance would turn [anyone] to ashes. Garuḍa then,
3.1.38.181
ācchidya pakṣatuṃḍābhyāṃ gṛhītvā'mṛtamudyayau ..
tearing them apart with his wings and beak, seized the nectar and flew up.
3.1.38.182
yaṃtramutpāṭya codyaṃtaṃ garuḍaṃ prāha mādhavaḥ .. 89 ..
As he was flying up after demolishing the machine, Mādhava said to Garuḍa:
3.1.38.183
tava tuṣṭo'smi pakṣīśa varaṃ varaya suvrata ..
"I am pleased with you, O lord of birds! Choose a boon, O one of good vows!"
3.1.38.184
atha pakṣī tamāha sma kamalānāyakaṃ harim .. .. 3.1.38.90 ..
Then the bird said to Hari, the lord of Kamalā:
3.1.38.185
tavopari sthitirme syānmā bhūtāṃ ca jarāmṛtī ..
"May I have my place above you, and let there be no old age or death [for me]."
3.1.38.186
tathāstviti hariḥ prāha varaṃ madvriyatāmiti .. 91 ..
"So be it," said Hari; "choose a boon from me [in return]."
3.1.38.187
ityuktastaṃ hariḥ prāha mama tvaṃ vāhanaṃ bhava ..
Having said this, Hari told him: "You become my vehicle;
3.1.38.188
syaṃdanopari ketuśca mama tvaṃ vinatāsuta .. 92 ..
and, O son of Vinatā, you shall be the emblem on top of my chariot."
3.1.38.189
tathāstviti khagopyāha kamalāpatimacyutam ..
"So be it," the bird said to Acyuta, the lord of Kamalā.
3.1.38.190
hṛtāmṛtaṃ khagaṃ śrutvā tata ākhaṃḍalo javāt .. 93 ..
Hearing that the bird had taken the nectar, Ākhaṇḍala then in haste
3.1.38.191
abhidrutyāśu kuliśaṃ pakṣe cikṣepa pakṣiṇaḥ ..
rushed forward quickly and hurled the thunderbolt at the wing of the bird.
3.1.38.192
tato vihasya garuḍaḥ pākaśāsanamabravīt .. 94 ..
Then, laughing, Garuḍa spoke to the chastiser of Pāka:
3.1.38.193
kuliśasya nipātānme na hare kāpi vedanā ..
"From the fall of the thunderbolt, O Hari, I feel no pain whatsoever;
3.1.38.194
saphalo vajrapātaste bhūyācca suranāyaka .. 95 ..
yet may the fall of your thunderbolt be fruitful, O lord of gods!"
3.1.38.195
itīrayanpatramekaṃ vyasṛjatpakṣatastadā ..
Saying this, he shed a single feather from his wing then;
3.1.38.196
śobhanaṃ parṇamasyeti suparṇa iti sobha vat .. 96 ..
because his feather was beautiful, he became known as Suparṇa.
3.1.38.197
tasminsuparṇe hemābhe sarve vismayamāyayuḥ ..
At that golden-hued, fair-feathered one, all were filled with wonder.

tatastu garuḍaḥ śakramabravīddvijapuṃgavāḥ .. 97 ..
Then, O bulls among brahmins, Garuḍa said to Śakra:

bhavatā sākamakhilaṃ jagadetaccarācaram ..
"Along with you, this entire world of the moving and unmoving—
