Śrī Sūta said: / When the liṅga had thus been consecrated by Rāma of untiring deeds, / Māruti quickly arrived, bringing an excellent liṅga. (1) / Having bowed to heroic Rāma, son of Daśaratha, that Māruti / then bowed to Vaidehī and Lakṣmaṇa, and saluted Sugrīva. (2) / Then, seeing the scion of Raghu worshipping that sandy liṅga / together with the sages, the son of the wind became furious. (3) / Extremely distressed with sorrow, his toil rendered vain, / Hanūmān, son of Añjanā, spoke to righteous Rāma: (4) / Hanūmān said: / “Ill-born was I, O Rāma, in vain, solely for affliction in the world! / I have often been tormented, O Lord, by the demons of cruel deeds. (5) / May no woman ever bear a son like me, / through whom endless sorrow is experienced in the ocean of worldly existence! (6) / I was tormented earlier by service, and even more so by battle; / now there is endless sorrow because you disregard me! (7) / By Sugrīva for the sake of a wife, and by the demon, / the younger brother of Rāvaṇa, for a kingdom, you were served, O scion of Raghu. (8) / By me you have been served without motive, O Rāma, O broad-minded one! / Among the many monkeys, I was indeed commanded by you today (9) / to bring a Śivaliṅga from Kailāsa, the supreme mountain. / Having gone swiftly to Kailāsa, I did not see the wielder of the Pināka. (10) / Having pleased him, the one accompanied by Ambā, whose mount is the bull, through tapas, / and having obtained the liṅga, O lord of the Raghus, I quickly returned. (11) / But now, having consecrated another liṅga made of sand, / you are worshipping it, O lord, along with the sages, gods, and gandharvas! (12) / In vain was this liṅga brought by me from Mount Kailāsa! / Ah, my body has become a burden to this earth, / O unfortunate as I am, O great king, O delight of Jānakī, O sovereign! / I am unable to endure this grief, O scion of Raghu! (14)”

afterwards he attains youth, and then experiences old age;

Just as for ripe fruits there is no fear other than falling,
3.1.45.14_58
yathā narāṇāṃ jātānāṃ nānyatra patanādbhayam .. 42 ..
so for men who are born there is no fear other than falling [into death].
3.1.45.14_59
yathā gṛhaṃ dṛḍhastaṃbhaṃ jīrṇaṃ kāle vinaśyati ..
Just as a house with firm pillars perishes when it decays in time,
3.1.45.14_60
evaṃ vinaśyaṃti narā jarāmṛtyuvaśaṃgatāḥ .. 43 ..
so men perish, subject to old age and death.
3.1.45.14_61
ahorātrasya gamanānnṛṇāmāyurvinaśyati ..
Through the passing of day and night, the lifespan of men is destroyed;
3.1.45.14_62
ātmānamanuśoca tvaṃ kimanyamanuśocasi .. 44 ..
grieve for yourself! Why do you grieve for another?
3.1.45.14_63
naśyatyāyuḥ sthitasyāpi dhāvato'pi kapīśvara ..
Lifespan perishes whether standing or running, O lord of monkeys:
3.1.45.14_64

death walks together with [man]; death sits together [with him];
3.1.45.14_65
caritvā dūradeśaṃ ca saha mṛtyurnivartate ..
having travelled to a distant land, death returns along with [him].
3.1.45.14_66

the body decays through old age, and through breathing difficulty, coughing, and the like.
3.1.45.14_68
yathā kāṣṭhaṃ ca kāṣṭhaṃ ca sameyātāṃ mahodadhau .. 47 ..
Just as two pieces of wood might come together in the great ocean,
3.1.45.14_69
sametya ca vyapeyātāṃ kālayogena vānara ..
and having come together, drift apart through the course of time, O monkey,
3.1.45.14_70
evaṃ bhāryā ca putraśca vadhukṣetradhanāni ca .. 48 ..
so wife, son, daughter-in-law, fields, and wealth
3.1.45.14_71
kvacitsaṃbhūya gacchaṃti punaranyatra vānara ..
meet together somewhere and then depart elsewhere, O monkey.
3.1.45.14_72
yathā hi pāṃthaṃ gacchaṃtaṃ pathi kaścitpathi sthitaḥ.. 49 ..
Just as someone standing along the road [says] to a traveler walking on the way:
3.1.45.14_73
ahamapyā gamiṣyāmi bhavadbhiḥ sākamityatha ..
“I too will travel along with you,”
3.1.45.14_74
kaṃcitkālaṃ sametau tau punaranyatra gacchataḥ .. 3.1.45.50 ..
and the two, having joined together for a time, depart elsewhere again,
3.1.45.14_75
evaṃ bhāryāsutādīnāṃ saṃgamo naśvaraḥ kape ..
even so the union with wives, sons, and others is transitory, O monkey.
3.1.45.14_76
śarīrajanmanā sākaṃ mṛtyuḥ saṃjāyate dhruvam .. 51 ..
Along with the birth of the body, death is certainly born;
3.1.45.14_77
avaśyaṃbhāvimaraṇe na hi jātu pratikriyā ..
there is never any counteracting an inevitable death.
3.1.45.14_78
etaccharīrapāte tu dehī karmagatiṃ gataḥ .. 52 ..
When this body falls, the embodied soul follows the course of its karma;
3.1.45.14_79
prāpya piṃḍāṃtaraṃ vatsa pūrvapiṃḍaṃ tyajatyasau ..
having obtained another body, my child, it abandons the former body.
3.1.45.14_80
prāṇināṃ na sadaikatra vāso bhavati vānara .. 53 ..
Living beings do not dwell constantly in one place, O monkey;
3.1.45.14_81
svasvakarmavaśātsarve viyujyaṃte pṛthakpṛthak ..
all are separated one by one according to their own karma.
3.1.45.14_82
yathā prāṇiśarīrāṇi naśyaṃti ca bhavaṃti ca .. 54 ..
Just as the bodies of living beings perish and come into existence,
3.1.45.14_83
ātmano janmamaraṇe naiva staḥ kapisattama ..
the self has no birth and death, O best of monkeys.
3.1.45.14_84
atastvamaṃjanāsūno viśokaṃ jñānamadvayaṃ ... .. 55 ..
Therefore, O son of Añjanā, meditate day and night on griefless, non-dual,
3.1.45.14_85
sadrūpamamalaṃ brahma ciṃtayasva divāniśam ..
pure Brahman whose nature is being.
3.1.45.14_86
tvatkṛtaṃ matkṛtaṃ karma matkṛtaṃ tvākṛtaṃ tathā .. 56 ..
Action done by you is action done by me; what is done by me is done by you;
3.1.45.14_87
malliṃgasthāpanaṃ tasmāttvalliṃga sthāpanaṃ kape ..
therefore the installation of my liṅga is the installation of your liṅga, O monkey.
3.1.45.14_88
muhūrtātikramālliṃgaṃ saikataṃ sītayā kṛtam .. 57 ..
Because the auspicious moment was passing, the sandy liṅga made by Sītā
3.1.45.14_89
mayātra sthāpitaṃ tasmātkopaṃ duḥkhaṃ ca mā kuru ..
was installed here by me; therefore, do not feel anger or sorrow.
3.1.45.14_90
kailāsādāgataṃ liṃgaṃ sthāpayāsmicchubhe dine .. 58 ..
Install the liṅga brought from Kailāsa on this auspicious day;
3.1.45.14_91
tava nāmnā tvidaṃ liṃgaṃ yātu lokatraye prathām ..
let this liṅga become renowned in the three worlds by your name!
3.1.45.14_92
hanūmadīśvaraṃ dṛṣṭvā draṣṭavyo rāghaveśvaraḥ .. 59 ..
Having seen Hanūmadīśvara, Rāghaveśvara must be seen.
3.1.45.14_93
brahmarākṣasayūthāni hatāni bhavatā kape ..
The hosts of Brahmarākṣasas were slain by you, O monkey;
3.1.45.14_94
ataḥ svanāmnā liṃgasya sthāpanāttvaṃ pramokṣyase .. 3.1.45.60 ..
Therefore, by establishing a liṅga in your own name, you will be liberated.
3.1.45.14_95
svayaṃ hareṇa dattaṃ tu hanūmannāmakaṃ śivam ..
Given personally by Hara, the Śiva named Hanūmat,
3.1.45.14_96
saṃpaśyanrāmanāthaṃ ca kṛtakṛtyo bhavennaraḥ .. 61 ..
a man who beholds it and Rāmanātha will have accomplished his purpose.
3.1.45.14_97
yojanānāṃ sahasre'pi smṛtvā liṃgaṃ hanūmataḥ ..
Even at a distance of a thousand yojanas, by remembering Hanūmat's liṅga,
3.1.45.14_98
rāmanātheśvaraṃ cāpi smṛtvā sāyujyamāpnuyāt .. 62 ..
and remembering Rāmanātheśvara as well, he will attain union [with Śiva].
3.1.45.14_99
teneṣṭaṃ sarvayajñaiśca tapaścākāri kṛtsnaśaḥ ..
He has performed sacrifices with all rituals and carried out austerity completely,
3.1.45.14_100
yena dṛṣṭau mahādevau hanūmadrāghaveśvarau .. 63 ..
by whom the two Great Gods, Hanūmadīśvara and Rāghaveśvara, have been seen.
3.1.45.14_101

The liṅga made by Hanūmat, the liṅga made by me,
3.1.45.14_102
jānakīyaṃ ca yalliṃgaṃ yalliṃgaṃ lakṣmaṇeśvaram .. 64 ..
the liṅga belonging to Jānakī, and the liṅga Lakṣmaṇeśvara;
3.1.45.14_103
sugrīveṇa kṛtaṃ yacca setukartrā nalena ca ..
that which was made by Sugrīva, and by Nala the builder of the bridge;
3.1.45.14_104
aṃgadena ca nīlena tathā jāṃbavatā kṛtam .. 65 ..
made by Aṅgada, by Nīla, and likewise by Jāmbavat;
3.1.45.14_105
vibhīṣaṇena yaccāpi ratnaliṃgaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ..
and the jewel-liṅga established by Vibhīṣaṇa;
3.1.45.14_106
indrādyaiśca kṛtaṃ liṃgaṃ yaccheṣādyaiḥ pratiṣṭhitam .. 66 ..
the liṅga made by Indra and the gods, and that established by Śeṣa and others—
3.1.45.14_107
ityekādaśarūpo'yaṃ śivaḥ sākṣādvibhāsate ..
thus this Śiva manifests directly in eleven forms.
3.1.45.14_108
sadā hyeteṣu liṃgeṣu saṃnidhatte maheśvaraḥ .. 67 ..
For Maheśvara is always present in these liṅgas.
3.1.45.14_109
tatsvapāpaughaśuddhyarthaṃ sthāpayasva maheśvaram ..
Therefore, install Maheśvara for the purification of your multitude of sins.
3.1.45.14_110
atha cettvaṃ mahābhāga liṃgamutsādayiṣyasi .. 68 ..
Moreover, if you, O fortunate one, will uproot the liṅga
3.1.45.14_111
mayātra sthāpitaṃ vatsa sītayā saikataṃ kṛtam ..
made of sand by Sītā and installed here by me, my child,
3.1.45.14_112
sthāpayiṣyāmi ca tato liṃgametattvayā kṛtam .. 69 ..
I will then install this liṅga brought by you.
3.1.45.14_113
pātālaṃ sutalaṃ prāpya vitalaṃ ca rasātalam ..
Reaching Pātāla, Sutala, Vitala, and Rasātala,
3.1.45.14_114
talātalaṃ ca tadidaṃ bhedayitvā tu tiṣṭhati .. 3.1.45.70 ..
and piercing Talātala, this [liṅga] firmly stands.
3.1.45.14_115
pratiṣṭhitaṃ mayā liṃgaṃ bhettuṃ kasya balaṃ bhavet ..
Who could have the strength to break the liṅga consecrated by me?
3.1.45.14_116
uttiṣṭha liṃgamudvāsya mayaitatsthāpitaṃ kape .. .. 71 ..
Arise, monkey! Uproot this liṅga installed by me,
3.1.45.14_117
tvayā samāhṛtaṃ liṃgaṃ sthāpayasvāśu mā śucaḥ ..
and quickly install the liṅga brought by you; do not grieve!"
3.1.45.14_118
ityuktastaṃ praṇamyāthājñātasattvo'tha vānaraḥ .. 72 ..
Addressed thus, having bowed to him, the monkey, unaware of its true reality, [thought]:
3.1.45.14_119
udvāsayāmi vegena saikataṃ liṃgamutta mam..
"I will swiftly uproot the excellent sandy liṅga,
3.1.45.14_120
saṃsthāpayāmi kailāsādānītaṃ liṃgamādarāt .. 73 ..
and respectfully install the liṅga brought from Kailāsa.
3.1.45.14_121
udvāsane saikatasya kiyānbhāro bhavenmama ..
What burden could the uprooting of a sandy [liṅga] be for me?"
3.1.45.14_122
cetasaivaṃ vicāryāyaṃ hanūmānmārutā tmajaḥ .. 74 ..
Having reflected thus in his mind, Hanūmat, the son of the wind-god,
3.1.45.14_123
paśyatāṃ sarvadevānāṃ munīnāṃ kapirakṣasām ..
as all the gods, sages, monkeys, and rakṣasas were watching,
3.1.45.14_124
paśyato rāmacandrasya lakṣmaṇasyāpi paśyataḥ .. 75 ..
as Rāmacandra looked on, and as Lakṣmaṇa looked on,
3.1.45.14_125
paśyaṃtyā api vaidehyā liṃgaṃ tatsaikataṃ balāt ..
and as Vaidehī looked on, that mighty one forcefully seized
3.1.45.14_126
pāṇinā sarvayatnena jagrāha tarasā balī .. 76 ..
that sandy liṅga with his hand swiftly, using all his effort.
3.1.45.14_127
yatnena mahatā cāyaṃ cālayannapi mārutiḥ ..
Even shaking it with great effort, the son of the wind-god
3.1.45.14_128
nālaṃ cālayituṃ hyāsītsaikataṃ liṃgamojasā .. 77 ..
was unable by his power to move the sandy liṅga.
3.1.45.14_129
tataḥ kilakilāśabdaṃ kurvanvānarapuṃgavaḥ ..
Then, making a clamorous shout, the bull among monkeys,
3.1.45.14_130
pucchamudyamya pāṇibhyāṃ nirāsthattannijaujasā .. 78 ..
raising his tail, hurled it with his hands, using his own strength.
3.1.45.14_131
ityanekaprakāreṇa cāla yannapi vānaraḥ ..
Even shaking it in numerous ways thus, the monkey,
3.1.45.14_132
naiva cālayituṃ śakto babhūva pavanātmajaḥ .. 79 ..
the son of the wind, was not at all able to move it.
3.1.45.14_133
tadveṣṭayitvā pucchena pāṇibhyāṃ dharaṇīṃ spṛśan ..
Wrapping it with his tail and touching the earth with both hands,
3.1.45.14_134
utpapātātha tarasā vyomni vāyusutaḥ kapiḥ .. 3.1.45.80 ..
the monkey, the son of the wind, then flew up swiftly into the sky,
3.1.45.14_135
kaṃpayansa dharāṃ sarvāṃ saptadvīpāṃ saparvatam ..
shaking the entire earth with its seven continents and mountains.
3.1.45.14_136
liṃgasya krośamātre tu mūrcchito rudhiraṃ vaman .. 81 ..
At a mere krośa from the liṅga, swooning and vomiting blood,
3.1.45.14_137
papāta hanumānviprāḥ kaṃpitāṃgo dharātale ..
Hanūmān fell upon the ground, O brahmins, his limbs trembling.
3.1.45.14_138
patato vāyuputrasya vaktrācca nayanadvayāt .. 82 ..
From the mouth and from both eyes of the falling son of the wind,
3.1.45.14_139
nāsāpuṭācchrotraraṃdhrādapānācca dvijottamāḥ ..
from his nostrils, ear-holes, and anus, O best of the twice-born,
3.1.45.14_140
rudhiraughaḥ prasusrāva raktakuṇḍa mabhūcca tat.. 83 ..
a stream of blood flowed forth, and that became a pool of blood.
3.1.45.14_141
tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvaṃ sadevāsuramānuṣam ..
Then a cry of distress arose from all, including gods, asuras, and humans.
3.1.45.14_142
dhāvaṃtau kapibhiḥ sārddhamubhau tau rāmalakṣmaṇau .. 84 ..
Both Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, running along with the monkeys
3.1.45.14_143
jānakīsahitau viprā hyāstāṃ śokākulau tadā ..
accompanied by Jānakī, O brahmins, were then agitated with grief.
3.1.45.14_144
sītayā sahitau vīrau vānaraiśca mahābalau .. 85 ..
Accompanied by Sītā and the mighty monkeys, the two heroes
3.1.45.14_145
rurucāte tadā viprā gandhamādanaparvate ..
shone then upon Mount Gandhamādana, O brahmins,
3.1.45.14_146
yathā tārāgaṇayutau rajanyāṃ śaśi bhāskarau .. 86 ..
like the moon and sun accompanied by the host of stars in the night.
3.1.45.14_147
dadarśaturhanūmaṃtaṃ cūrṇīkṛtakalevaram..
They saw Hanūmat, his body shattered,
3.1.45.14_148
mūrcchitaṃ patitaṃ bhūmau vamantaṃ rudhiraṃ mukhāt.. 87 ..
fallen on the ground in a swoon, vomiting blood from his mouth.
3.1.45.14_149
vilokya kapayaḥ sarve hāhākṛtvā'patanbhuvi ..
Seeing him, all the monkeys, crying out in grief, fell to the ground.
3.1.45.14_150
karābhyāṃ sadayaṃ sītā hanūmaṃtaṃ marutsutam.. 88 ..
With both hands, Sītā compassionately touched Hanūmat, the son of the wind,
3.1.45.14_151
tātatāteti pasparśa patitaṃ dharaṇītale ..
who had fallen upon the surface of the earth, saying, "Dear child! Dear child!"
3.1.45.14_152
rāmo'pi dṛṣṭvā patitaṃ hanūmaṃtaṃ kapīśvaram .. . 89 ..
Rāma too, having seen Hanūmat, the lord of monkeys, fallen down,
3.1.45.14_153
āropyāṃkaṃ svapāṇibhyāmāmamarśa kalevaram ..
placed him in his lap and stroked his body with both hands.
3.1.45.14_154
vimuṃcannetrajaṃ vāri vāyujaṃ cāvravīddvijāḥ .. 3.1.45.90 ..
Shedding water born of his eyes, O brahmins, he spoke to the son of the Wind:
3.1.45.14_155
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśīti sāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye rāmacandratattvajñānopadeśavarṇanaṃnāma paṃcacatvāriṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 45 ..
Thus ends the forty-fifth chapter, titled 'The Description of the Teaching of the Knowledge of the Absolute Truth by Rāmacandra', in the Setumāhātmya in the Brahmakhaṇḍa, the third [part] of the auspicious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
