3.1.48.54
pīne vātha kṛśe vāpi samavartī paretarāṭ .. 26 ..
whether toward the stout or the thin, the King of the Dead treats all alike.
3.1.48.55
vane vā nagare grāme parvate vā sthalāṃtare ..
Whether in a forest, in a city, in a village, on a mountain, or in another place,
3.1.48.56
mṛtyorvaśe prayātavyaṃ sarvairapi hi jaṃtubhiḥ .. 27 ..
All living beings must indeed pass under the power of death.
3.1.48.57
vatsa nityaṃ ca garbhasthairjātairapi ca jaṃtubhiḥ ..
O child, living beings constantly—whether still in the womb or born,
3.1.48.58
yuvabhiḥ sthaviraiḥ sarvairyātavyaṃ yamapattanam .. 28 ..
the young and the old—must all go to the city of Yama.
3.1.48.59
varṇibhiśca gṛhasthaiśca vānaprasthaiśca bhikṣubhiḥ ..
Religious students, householders, forest-dwellers, and ascetics—
3.1.48.60
kāle prāpte tvayaṃ dehastyaktavyo dvijaputraka .. 29 ..
when the time arrives, this body must be abandoned, O son of a twice-born!
3.1.48.61
brāhmaṇaiḥ kṣatriyairvaiśyaiḥ śūdrairapi ca saṃkaraiḥ ..
By brahmins, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, śūdras, and mixed castes as well,
3.1.48.62
yātavyaṃ pretanilaye dvijaputra mahāmate .. 3.1.48.30 ..
one must go to the abode of the dead, O son of a twice-born of great intellect!
3.1.48.63
devāśca munayo yakṣā gaṃdharvoragarākṣasāḥ ..
The gods, the sages, the yakṣas, the gandharvas, serpents, and rākṣasas,
3.1.48.64
anye ca jaṃtavaḥ sarve brahmaviṣṇuharādayaḥ .. 31 ..
and all other beings, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Hara, and the rest—
3.1.48.65
sarve yāsyaṃti vilayaṃ na tvaṃ śocitumarhasi ..
all shall meet destruction; you ought not to grieve.
3.1.48.66
advayaṃ saccidānaṃdaṃ yadbrahmopaniṣadgatam .. 32 ..
The non-dual, being-consciousness-bliss, which is the Brahman found in the Upaniṣads—
3.1.48.67
na tasya vilayo janma vardhanaṃ cāpi sattama ..
for that there is neither destruction, nor birth, nor growth, O best of men.
3.1.48.68
malabhāṃḍe navadvāre pūyāsṛkchoṇitālaye .. 33 ..
In this vessel of filth with nine gates, an abode of pus and blood,
3.1.48.69
dehe'sminbudbudākāre kṛmiyūthasamākule ..
in this body having the shape of a bubble, crowded with swarms of worms,
3.1.48.70
kāmakrodhabhayadrohamohamātsaryakāriṇi .. 34 ..
causing desire, anger, fear, hostility, delusion, and envy,
3.1.48.71
paradāraparakṣetraparadravyaikalolupe ..
coveting only another's wife, another's field, and another's wealth,
3.1.48.72
hiṃsāsūyāśucivyāpte viṣṭhāmūtraikabhājane .. 35 ..
pervaded by violence, malice, and impurity, a mere receptacle for feces and urine—
3.1.48.73
yaḥ kuryācchobhanadhiyaṃ sa mūḍhaḥ sa ca durmatiḥ ..
whoever should form a good opinion [of it] is a fool and wicked-minded.
3.1.48.74
bahucchidraghaṭākāre dehe'sminnaśucau sadā .. 36 ..
In this body shaped like a jar with many holes, ever impure,
3.1.48.75
vāyoravasthitiḥ kiṃ syātprāṇākhyasya ciraṃ dvija ..
how could the stay of the wind called prāṇa be long, O twice-born?
3.1.48.76
ato mā kuru śokaṃ tvaṃ jananīṃ pitaraṃ prati .. 37 ..
Therefore do not grieve for your mother and father.
3.1.48.77
tau svakarmavaśādyātau gṛhaṃ tyaktvā tvidaṃ kvacit..
Under the power of their own karma, having left this house, they have gone somewhere,
3.1.48.78
tava karmavaśāttvaṃ ca tiṣṭhasyasminmahītale .. 38 ..
and under the power of your karma you remain on the surface of this earth.
3.1.48.79
yadā karmakṣayaste syāttadā tvaṃ ca mariṣyasi ..
When there is the exhaustion of your karma, then you too shall die.
3.1.48.80
mariṣyamāṇapreto hi mṛtapretasya śocati .. 39 ..
A ghost about to die grieves indeed for a dead ghost!
3.1.48.81
yasminkāle samutpannau tava mātā pitā tathā ..
At the time when your mother and father were born,
3.1.48.82
na tasmiṃstvaṃ samutpannastato bhinnā gatirhi vaḥ .. 3.1.48.40 ..
you were not born at that [time]; therefore your destiny is indeed separate.
3.1.48.83
yadi tulyā gatiste syāttābhyāṃ saha mahāmate ...
If your destiny were identical with theirs, O intelligent one,
3.1.48.84
tarhi tvayāpi yātavyaṃ mṛtau yatra hi tau gatau ..41..
then upon their death you too would have gone where they have gone.
3.1.48.85
mṛtānāṃ bāṃdhavā ye tu muṃcaṃtyaśrūṇi bhūtale ..
The relatives of the dead who shed tears on the earth—
3.1.48.86
pibaṃtyaśrūṇi tānyaddhā mṛtāḥ pretāḥ paratra vai .. 42..
those tears indeed the dead spirits drink in the other world.
3.1.48.87
ataḥ śokaṃ parityajya dhṛtiṃ kṛtvā samāhitaḥ ..
Therefore, having abandoned grief and gathered firmness, being collected in mind,
3.1.48.88
anayoḥ pretakāryāṇi kuru tvaṃ vaidikāni tu .. 43 ..
perform the Vedic funeral rites for both of them.
3.1.48.89
śaraghātānmṛtāvetau yasmātte jananī pitā ..
Because both your mother and father died from the blow of an arrow,
3.1.48.90
atastaddoṣaśāṃtyarthamasthīnyādāya vai tayoḥ .. 44 ..
therefore, for the appeasement of that fault, take their bones
3.1.48.91
rāmanāthaśivakṣetre rāmasetau vimuktide ..
and deposit [them] at Rāmasetu, which grants liberation, in the sacred field of Rāmanātha Śiva,
3.1.48.92
sthāpayasva tathā śrāddhaṃ sapiṃḍīkaraṇādikam .. 45 ..
and likewise [perform] the śrāddha, the sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, and other rites.
3.1.48.93
tatraiva kuru śuddhyarthaṃ tayorbāhmaṇaputraka ..
Perform [them] right there for the purification of both, O brahmin's son;
3.1.48.94
tena durmṛtyudoṣasya śāṃtirbhavati nānyathā .. 46 ..
by that comes the appeasement of the sin of unnatural death, not otherwise.
3.1.48.95
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
3.1.48.96
evamuktaḥ sa munibhiḥ śākalyasya suto dvijāḥ ..
Having been spoken to thus by the sages, O twice-born, the son of Śākalya,
3.1.48.97
jāṃgalākhyastayoḥ sarvaṃ pitṛmedhaṃ cakāra vai .. 47 ..
named Jāṅgala, performed their entire funeral sacrifice.
3.1.48.98
anyedyurasthīnyādāya hālāsyaṃ prayayau ca saḥ ..
On the next day, taking the bones, he went to Hālāsya.
3.1.48.99
tasmādrāmeśvaraṃ sadyo gatvā'yaṃ jāṃgalo dvijaḥ..48..
Going from there at once to Rāmeśvara, this twice-born Jāṅgala,
3.1.48.100
muniproktaprakāreṇa tasminrāmeśvarasthale..
in the manner spoken by the sage, at that site of Rāmeśvara,
3.1.48.101
nidhāya pitrorasthīni śrāddhādīnyakarottathā..49..
deposited the bones of his parents and performed the śrāddha and other rites.
3.1.48.102
prathamābdikaparyaṃtaṃ kāryaṃ tatrākarocca saḥ..
And he performed the rites there up to the first annual ceremony;
3.1.48.103
sthitvābdaṃ sa muneḥ putra eko jāṃgalasaṃjñakaḥ..3.1.48.5...
having dwelt there alone for a year, that son of the sage named Jāṅgala,
3.1.48.104
ābdikāṃte dine vipro rātrau svapne vilokya tu..
on the day at the end of the year, at night in a dream, the brahmin saw
3.1.48.105
svamātaraṃ ca pitaraṃ śaṃkhacakragadādharau..51..
his mother and father bearing conch, discus, and mace,
3.1.48.106
garuḍopari saṃviṣṭau padmamālāvibhūṣitau..
seated upon Garuḍa, adorned with lotus garlands,
3.1.48.107
śobhitau tulasīdāmnā sphuranmakarakuṃḍalau..52..
beautified with garlands of tulasī, wearing gleaming makara-shaped earrings,
3.1.48.108
kaustubhālaṃkṛtoraskau pītāṃbaravirājitau ..
their chests adorned with the Kaustubha gem, resplendent in yellow garments.
3.1.48.109
evaṃ dṛṣṭvā munisuto jāṃgalaḥ suprasannadhīḥ .. 53 ..
Seeing [them] thus, the sage's son Jāṅgala, his mind very serene,
3.1.48.110
svāśramaṃ punarāgatya sukhena nyavasaddvijāḥ ..
returned to his hermitage and lived happily, O twice-born.
3.1.48.111
svapnadṛṣṭaṃ ca vṛttāṃtaṃ mātāpitroḥ sa jāṃgalaḥ .. 54 ..
And that Jāṅgala reported the account of his mother and father seen in the dream
3.1.48.112
tebhyo nyavedayatsarvaṃ brāhmaṇebhyo'tiharṣitaḥ ..
entirely to those brahmins, being exceedingly delighted.
3.1.48.113
śrutvā te munayo vṛttamāsansaṃprītamānasāḥ .. 55 ..
Having heard that news, those sages became joyful in their hearts.
3.1.48.114
atha rājānamālokya sarve te'pi maharṣayaḥ ..
Then, beholding the king, all those great seers—
3.1.48.115
avadankupitā viprāḥ śapaṃtaḥ śaṃkaraṃ nṛpam .. 56 ..
the brahmins, being enraged, spoke, cursing King Śaṅkara:
3.1.48.116
pāṃḍyabhūpa mahāmūrkha krauryādbrāhmaṇaghātaka ..
"O Pāṇḍya king! O great fool! O killer of a brahmin through cruelty!
3.1.48.117
strīhatyā brahmahatyā ca kṛtā yasmāttvayādhunā .. 57 ..
Since you have now committed both the murder of a woman and the murder of a brahmin, // 57
3.1.48.118
ataḥ śarīrasaṃtyāgaṃ kuru tvaṃ havyavāhane ..
therefore, abandon your body in the fire that carries oblations.
3.1.48.119
nocettava na śuddhiḥ syātprāyaścittaśatairapi .. 58 ..
Otherwise, you will have no purification, even through hundreds of expiations. // 58
3.1.48.120
tvatsaṃbhāṣaṇamātreṇa brahmahatyāyutaṃ bhavet ..
Merely by speaking with you, ten thousand murders of brahmins are incurred.
3.1.48.121
asmatsakāśādgaccha tvaṃ pāṃḍyānāṃ kulapāṃsana .. 59 ..
Depart from our presence, O defiler of the Pāṇḍya lineage!" // 59
3.1.48.122
ityukto munibhiḥ pāṃḍyaḥ śaṃkaro dvijapuṃgavāḥ ..
Addressed thus by the sages, O bulls among brahmins, the Pāṇḍya [king] Śaṅkara [said]:
3.1.48.123
tathāstu dehasaṃtyāgaṃ kariṣye havyavāhane .. 3.1.48.60 ..
"So be it; I shall abandon my body in the fire that carries oblations // 60
3.1.48.124
brahmahatyāviśuddhyarthaṃ bhavatāṃ sannidhāvaham ..
in your presence, for the purification of the murder of a brahmin.
3.1.48.125
anugrahaṃ me kurvaṃtu bhavaṃto munisattamāḥ .. 61 ..
O best of sages, bestow your grace upon me, // 61
3.1.48.126
tathā śarīra saṃtyāgātpātakaṃ me layaṃ vrajet ..
so that through the abandonment of my body my sin may be destroyed."
3.1.48.127
evamuktvā munīnsarvāñcchaṃkaraḥ pāṃḍyabhūpatiḥ .. 62 ..
Having spoken thus to all the sages, King Śaṅkara of the Pāṇḍyas, // 62
3.1.48.128
svānmaṃtriṇaḥ samāhūya babhāṣe vacanaṃ tvidam ..
summoning his ministers, spoke these words:
3.1.48.129
bho maṃtriṇo brahmahatyā mayā'kāryavicārataḥ .. 63 ..
"O ministers, by me, lacking reflection on what should not be done, the murder of a brahmin // 63
3.1.48.130
strīhatyā ca tathā krūrā mahānarakadāyinī ..
and also the cruel murder of a woman, which leads to a great hell, [have been committed].
3.1.48.131
etatpātakaśuddhyarthaṃ munīnāṃ vacanādaham .. 64 ..
For the purification of this sin, at the word of the sages, // 64
3.1.48.132
pradīpte 'gnau mahājvāle parityakṣye kalevaram ..
I will abandon my body in a blazing fire of great flames.
3.1.48.133
kāṣṭhānyānayata kṣipraṃ tairagniśca samidhyatām .. 65 ..
Quickly bring pieces of firewood, and let the fire be kindled with them. // 65
3.1.48.134
mama putraṃ ca suruciṃ rājye sthāpayatācirāt ..
And without delay, install my son Suruci in the kingdom.
3.1.48.135
mā śokaṃ kurutāmātyā daivataṃ duratikramam .. 66 ..
Do not grieve, O ministers; destiny cannot be overcome." // 66
3.1.48.136
itīritā nṛpatinā maṃtriṇo rurudustadā ..
Addressed thus by the king, the ministers then wept:
3.1.48.137
pāṃḍyanātha mahārāja ripūṇāmapi vatsala .. 67 ..
"O lord of the Pāṇḍyas! O great king, affectionate even to enemies! // 67
3.1.48.138
vayaṃ hi bhavatā nityaṃ putravatparipālitāḥ ..
Indeed, we have always been protected by you like sons.
3.1.48.139
tvāṃ vinā na pravekṣyāma purīṃ devapuropamām .. 68 ..
Without you, we will not enter the city, which is like the city of the gods. // 68
3.1.48.140
havyavāhaṃ pravekṣyāmo mahā kāṣṭhasamedhitam ..
We too will enter the fire kindled with abundant logs!"
3.1.48.141
teṣāṃ pralapitaṃ śrutvā pāṃḍya śaṃkarabhūpatiḥ ..
Hearing their lamentation, King Śaṅkara of the Pāṇḍyas // 69
3.1.48.142
provāca maṃtriṇaḥ sarvānvacanaṃ sāṃtvapūrvakam .. 69 ..
addressed all the ministers with soothing words:
3.1.48.143
.. śaṃkara uvāca ..
Śaṅkara said:
3.1.48.144
kiṃ kariṣyatha bho'mātyā mahāpātakinā mayā .. 3.1.48.70 ..
"O ministers, what will you do with me, a great sinner? // 70
3.1.48.145
siṃhāsanaṃ samāruhya na kartuṃ yujyate bata ..
Alas, having ascended the throne, it is not fitting [for me]
3.1.48.146
caturarṇavaparyaṃtadharāpālanamaṃjasā .. 71 ..
to directly protect the earth bounded by the four oceans. // 71
3.1.48.147
matputraṃ suruciṃ śīghramataḥ sthāpayatāsane ..
Therefore, swiftly install my son Suruci upon the throne.
3.1.48.148
kāṣṭhānyānayata kṣipraṃ praveṣṭuṃ havyavāhanam .. 72 ..
Quickly bring firewood for me to enter the fire that carries oblations. // 72
