3.1.5.66
tadā tvaṃ mānuṣaṃ bhāvaṃ jīrṇatvacamivoragaḥ .. 3.1.5.30 ..

together with your wife, will attain your own realm.
3.1.5.68

Taking leave of the four-faced [god], he swiftly entered his own abode.
3.1.5.71
ciṃtayāmāsa tatrāsau martyatāṃ yāsyato mama..
There he reflected: "When I go into mortality,
3.1.5.72
ko vā pitā bhavedbhūmau kā vā mātā bhaviṣyati..33..
who indeed might be my father on earth, and who will be my mother?"
3.1.5.73
bahudhetthaṃ samālocya vidhūmo niścikāya saḥ..

3.1.5.74
kauśāṃbīnagare rājā śatānīka iti śrutaḥ ..34..
"In the city of Kauśāmbī there is a king renowned as Śatānīka.
3.1.5.75
asti vīro mahābhāgo bhāryā cāpi pativratā ..

tameva pitaraṃ kṛtvā mātaraṃ ca vidhāya tām ..
Making him alone my father, and making her my mother,
3.1.5.78
saṃbhaviṣyāmi bhūloke svakarmaparipākataḥ ..36..
I shall be born in the mortal realm through the ripening of my own deeds."
3.1.5.79
tataḥ sa mālyavantaṃ ca puṣpadaṃtaṃ balotkaṭam..
Then, having summoned his three servants—Mālyavant, Puṣpadanta,
3.1.5.80
trīnāhūyātmano bhṛtyānvṛttametannyave dayat .. 37 ..
and the mighty Balotkaṭa—he disclosed this occurrence:
3.1.5.81
bhṛtyāḥ śṛṇuta bhadraṃ vo brahmaśāpānmahābhayāt ..
"Servants, listen—blessing be upon you! Because of the great fear of Brahmā's curse,
3.1.5.82
janiṣyāmi śatānīkādviṣṇumatyāmahaṃ sutaḥ .. 38 ..
I will be born as the son of Śatānīka from Viṣṇumatī."
3.1.5.83
iti śrutvā vaco bhṛtyāstasyā prāṇā bahiścarāḥ ..
Hearing these words, his servants, who were like his vital breaths wandering outside,
3.1.5.84
vāṣpapūrṇamukhāḥ sarve vidhūmaṃ vākyamabruvan ..39 ..
all with faces filled with tears, spoke these words to Vidhūma.
3.1.5.85
.. bhṛtyā ūcuḥ .. ..
The servants said:
3.1.5.86
tvadviyogaṃ vayaṃ sarve trayo'pi na sahāmahe ..
"Separation from you, all three of us cannot endure;
3.1.5.87
tasmānmānuṣa bhāvatvamasmābhiḥ saha yāsyasi .. 3.1.5.40 ..
therefore, you shall go into human existence together with us.
3.1.5.88
śatānīkasya rājarṣermaṃtrī yo'yaṃ yugandharaḥ ..
There is that minister of the royal sage Śatānīka named Yugandhara,
3.1.5.89
senānīrvipratīkaśca yo'yaṃ prāgrasaro raṇe ..41..
and the general Vipratīka, who marches in the forefront in battle,
3.1.5.90
narmakarmasu hṛdvipro vallabhākhyo mahāṃśca yaḥ ..
and the great brahmin named Vallabha, dear in humorous diversions;
3.1.5.91
teṣāṃ putrāstrayo'pyete bhaviṣyāmo na saṃśayaḥ .. 42 ..
we three shall undoubtedly become their sons.
3.1.5.92
śatānīkasya rājarṣeḥ putrabhāvaṃ gatasya te ..
To you, who have become the son of the royal sage Śatānīka,
3.1.5.93
śuśrūṣāṃ saṃvidhāsyāmasteṣu teṣu ca karmasu ..
we shall render service in various tasks."
3.1.5.94
tānevaṃvādinaḥ so'yaṃ vidhūmo vākyamabravīt .. 43 ..
To them speaking thus, that Vidhūma spoke [these] words.
3.1.5.95
.. vidhūma uvāca .. ..
Vidhūma said:
3.1.5.96
jāne'haṃ bhavatāṃ snehaṃ tādṛśaṃ mayya nuttamam .. 44 ..
"I know such peerless affection of yours towards me;
3.1.5.97
tathāpi kathayāmyadya tacchṛṇudhvaṃ hitaṃ vacaḥ ..
nevertheless, I speak today—hear these beneficial words:
3.1.5.98
brahmaśāpena ghoreṇa svena duṣkarmaṇā kṛtam.. 45 ..
brought about by a terrible curse of Brahmā due to my own wrong deeds,
3.1.5.99
kutsitaṃ mānuṣaṃ bhāvamahameko'nuvartaye ..
I alone should undergo this despised human state.
3.1.5.100
vihitaṃ na hi yuṣmākametacchāpānuvartanam .. 46 ..
Following this curse is indeed not ordained for you;
3.1.5.101
jugupsite'to mānuṣye mā kurudhvaṃ mano'dhunā ..
therefore, do not set your mind now upon contemptible human existence.
3.1.5.102
ataḥ śāpāvadhiryāvanmadviyogo viṣahyatām .. 47 ..
Therefore, until the limit of the curse, let separation from me be endured."
3.1.5.103
ityuktavantaṃ te sarve mālyavatpramukhāstadā ..
To him who had spoken thus, all of them, led by Mālyavant,
3.1.5.104
ūcuḥ praṇamya śirasā prārthayaṃtaḥ punaḥpunaḥ .. 48 ..
bowing their heads, spoke, entreating him again and again:
3.1.5.105
rakṣitvā kṛpayā hyasmānmā kuruṣva ca sāhasam ..
"Protect us out of compassion, and do not act rashly!
3.1.5.106
parityajasi naḥ sarvānbhaktānadya nirāgasaḥ .. 49 ..
Are you abandoning all of us today, your guiltless devotees?
3.1.5.107
tvadviyogānmahāghorānmānuṣyamapi kutsitam ..
Compared to the terrifying separation from you, even contemptible human existence
3.1.5.108
bahu manyāmahe deva tasmānnastrāhi sāṃpratam .. 3.1.5.50 ..
we deem very worthy, O lord! Therefore, protect us now!"
3.1.5.109
evaṃ sa yācamānāṃstrīnanvamanyata bhṛtyakān ..
Thus, he consented to those three servants who were entreating him;
3.1.5.110
taistribhiḥ sahitaḥ so'yaṃ kauśāṃbīṃ gantumaicchata .. 51 ..
together with those three, he desired to go to Kauśāmbī.
3.1.5.111
etasminneva kāle tu somavaṃśavivarddhanaḥ ..
At that very time, however, the enhancer of the lunar dynasty,

Wise, prudent, eloquent, intent on protecting his subjects,
3.1.5.115
caturaṃgabalopeto vikramaikadhano yuvā ..
equipped with a fourfold army, having valor as his sole wealth, young—
3.1.5.116
sa kauśāṃbīṃ mahārājo nagarīmadhyuvāsa vai .. 54 ..
that great king dwelt in the city of Kauśāmbī.
3.1.5.117
tasya mantrarahasyajño mantrī jāto yugaṃdharaḥ ..
Knowing the secret of counsel, Yugandhara was his minister,
3.1.5.118
senānīrvipratīkaśca tasya prāgrasaro raṇe .. 55 ..
and Vipratīka was his general, the foremost in battle.

narmakarmasu tasyāsīdvallabhākhyaḥ sakhā dvijaḥ ..
In matters of jest, he had a brahmin friend named Vallabha.
3.1.5.120
tasya viṣṇumatī nāma viṣṇoḥ śrīriva vallabhā .. 56 ..
His beloved [wife] was named Viṣṇumatī, just like Śrī is beloved of Viṣṇu.
3.1.5.121
sa sarvaguṇasaṃpannaḥ śatānīko mahāmatiḥ ..
Endowed with all virtues, the highly intelligent Śatānīka
3.1.5.122
putramātmasamaṃ tasyāṃ bhāryāyāṃ nānvaviṃdata .. 57 ..
did not obtain a son equal to himself from that wife.
3.1.5.123
ātmānamasutaṃ jñātvā sa bhṛśaṃ paryatapyata ..
Knowing himself to be sonless, he grieved deeply.
3.1.5.124
sa yugaṃdharamāhūya maṃtriṇaṃ mantravittamam .. 58 ..
Summoning the minister Yugaṃdhara, who was most skilled in counsel,
3.1.5.125
putralābhaḥ kathaṃ me syāditi kāryamamantrayat ..
he deliberated on the matter: “How may I obtain a son?”
3.1.5.126
yugandharo mahī pālaṃ putrālābhena pīḍitam ..
Gladdening with his speech the ruler of the earth,
3.1.5.127
harṣayanvacasā svena vākyametadabhāṣata .. 59 ..
who was afflicted by lack of a son, Yugaṃdhara spoke these words:
3.1.5.128
.. yugandhara uvāca .. ..
Yugaṃdhara said:
3.1.5.129
asti śāṃḍilyanāmā tu maharṣiḥ satyavākchuciḥ .. 3.1.5.60 ..
“There is a great seer named Śāṇḍilya, truthful in speech and pure,
3.1.5.130
śatrumitrasamo dāṃtastapaḥsvādhyāyatatparaḥ ..
impartial to foes and friends, self-controlled, devoted to austerity and the study of the Veda.
3.1.5.131
tameva munimāsādya jvalaṃtamiva pāvakam .. 61 ..
Approaching that very sage, blazing like fire,
3.1.5.132
putramātmasamaṃ rājanprārthayethā vinītavat ..
you should humbly ask for a son equal to yourself, O King.
3.1.5.133
kṛpāvānsa maharṣistu putraṃ te dāsyati dhruvam .. 62 ..
Compassionate as he is, that great seer will surely grant you a son.”
3.1.5.134
iti tadvacanaṃ śrutvā harṣasaṃphullalocanaḥ ..
Hearing these words of his, his eyes blossoming with joy,
3.1.5.135
maṃtriṇā tena saṃyuktastasyāgādāśramaṃ muneḥ .. 63 ..
accompanied by that minister, he went to the hermitage of that sage.
3.1.5.136
tamāśrame samāsīnaṃ praṇanāma mahīpatiḥ ..
The king bowed down to him as he sat in the hermitage.
3.1.5.137
śāṃḍilyastu mahātejā rājānaṃ prāptamāśramam .. 64 ..
Seeing that the king had arrived at the hermitage,
3.1.5.138
dṛṣṭvā pādyādibhiḥ pūjya svāgataṃ vyājahāra saḥ ..
Śāṇḍilya, endowed with great splendor, honored him with water for the feet and other rites, and offered a welcome.
3.1.5.139
.. śāṃḍilya uvāca .. ..
Śāṇḍilya said:
3.1.5.140
śatānīka kimarthaṃ tvamāśramaṃ prāptavānmama .. 65 ..
“Śatānīka, for what purpose have you come to my hermitage?
3.1.5.141
yatkartavyamidānīṃ te tadvadasva karomyaham ..
Speak what must be done for you now; I shall do it.”
3.1.5.142
munimevaṃ vadaṃtaṃ taṃ pratyavādīdyugaṃdharaḥ .. 66 ..
As the sage was speaking thus, Yugaṃdhara replied to him:
3.1.5.143
bhagavanneṣa vai rājā putrālābhena karṣitaḥ ..
“O venerable one, this king, tormented by lack of a son,
3.1.5.144
bhavaṃtaṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptaḥ sāṃprataṃ putrakāraṇāt .. 67 ..
has now come to you for refuge for the sake of a son.
3.1.5.145
asyāputratvajaṃ duḥkhaṃ tvamapākartumarhasi ..
You ought to dispel the sorrow born of his sonlessness.”
3.1.5.146
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā śāṃḍilyo munisattamaḥ ..68..
Hearing his speech, Śāṇḍilya, the best of sages,
3.1.5.147
putralābhavaraṃ tasmai pratijajñe nṛpāya vai ..
promised the boon of obtaining a son to that king.
3.1.5.148
sa rājño varadaḥ śrīmānkauśāṃbīmetya sādaram .. 69 ..
That glorious bestower of boons, having respectfully come to Kauśāmbī for the king,
3.1.5.149
putreṣṭyā putrakāmasya yājako'bhūnmahāmuniḥ ..
that great sage became the officiating priest in the sacrifice for obtaining a son for him who desired a son.
3.1.5.150
tato muniprasādena rājā daśarathopamaḥ .. 3.1.5.70 ..
Then, by the grace of the sage, the king, comparable to Daśaratha,
3.1.5.151
yajvā rāmamiva prāpa sahasrānīkamātmajam ..
having performed the sacrifice, obtained a son named Sahasrānīka, just as [Daśaratha obtained] Rāma.
3.1.5.152
evaṃ vidhūmaḥ saṃjajñe śatānīkānnṛpottamāt .. 71 ..
Thus Vidhūma was born from Śatānīka, the best of kings.
3.1.5.153
atrāṃtare maṃtrivarassenānīstu mahīpateḥ ..
Meanwhile, the king's foremost minister and commander-in-chief,

dvijo narmavayasyaśca putrānprāpuḥ kulocitān .. 72 ..
