3.1.9.45
dadarśātha sthitāṃ nārīṃ navayauvanaśālinīm ..

3.1.9.46
udaikṣata mahākāṃtiṃ mūrtāmiva ratiṃ dvijaḥ .. .. 23 ..

“Who are you, good lady of shapely hips, standing in the deserted cremation ground?
3.1.9.49
asyādhastātkimarthaṃ tvaṃ śūlaprotasya tiṣṭhasi ..
Why are you standing beneath this man impaled on the stake?”
3.1.9.50
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā sā prāha rucirānanā .. 25 ..
Hearing his words, the lovely-faced woman said:
3.1.9.51
puruṣo vallabho'yaṃ me śūle rājñā samarpitaḥ ..

3.1.9.54
tṛṣito yācate vāri māmayaṃ vyathate muhuḥ .. 27 ..

3.1.9.55
śūlaproto ddhatagrīvaṃ mumūrṣuṃ prāṇanāyakam..

3.1.9.56
nāsmi pāyayituṃ śaktā jalamenamadhaḥsthitā..28..
Standing below, I am unable to make him drink water.”
3.1.9.57
aśokadattastacchrutvā karuṇāvaruṇālayaḥ ..
Aśokadatta, an ocean of compassion, hearing that,
3.1.9.58
tatkālasadṛśaṃ vākyaṃ tāṃ vadhūmabravīttadā ..29..
then spoke words suited to the moment to that woman:
3.1.9.59
.. aśokadatta uvāca .. ..
Aśokadatta said:
3.1.9.60
mātarmatskaṃdhamāruhya dehyasmai śītalaṃ jalam..
“Mother, climb upon my shoulders and give him cool water.”
3.1.9.61
sā tatheti tamābhāṣya taruṇī tvarayānvitā..3.1.9.30..
Saying to him, “So be it,” the young woman, filled with haste,
3.1.9.62
ānamravapuṣastasya skaṃdhaṃ padbhyāṃ ruroha vai ..
climbed with her feet onto the shoulders of him who had bent his body down.
3.1.9.63
dvijasūnurdadarśātha śoṇitaṃ nūtanaṃ patat..31..
Then the son of the twice-born saw fresh blood falling.
3.1.9.64
kimetaditi sopaśyadunnamya sahasā mukham ..
“What is this?” he thought, and suddenly raising his face, he looked.
3.1.9.65
bhakṣyamāṇaṃ tayā tatsa vijñāya dvijanaṃdanaḥ..32..
Realizing that he [the impaled man] was being devoured by her, the son of the twice-born,
3.1.9.66
aśokadatto jagrāha tasyāḥ pādaṃ sanūpuram..
Aśokadatta, seized her foot along with the anklet.
3.1.9.67
tato'gānnūpuraṃ tyaktvā baddharatnaṃ vihāya tat..33..
She then fled into the sky, leaving behind that anklet set with jewels.
3.1.9.68
pratyuptānekaratnāḍhyaṃ tadādāyaca nūpuram..
Taking that anklet inlaid with many rich jewels,
3.1.9.69
aśokadattaḥ prayayau tacchmaśānānnṛpāṃtikam..34..
Aśokadatta went from that cremation ground into the presence of the king.
3.1.9.70
smaśānavṛttaṃ tatsarvaṃ sa nṛpāya nivedya vai..
Reporting that entire occurrence in the cremation ground to the king,
3.1.9.71
mahārghyaratnapratyuptaṃ nūpuraṃ ca dadau tadā ..35..
he then gave him the anklet inlaid with priceless jewels.
3.1.9.72
jñātvā tadvīracaritaṃ vīrairanyaiḥ suduṣkaram..
Recognizing that heroic deed, very difficult for other heroes to accomplish,
3.1.9.73
dadau madanalekhākhyāṃ sutāṃ tasmai mahīpatiḥ..36..
the lord of the earth gave him his daughter named Madanalekhā.
3.1.9.74
kadācidatha tāddivyaṃ nūpuraṃ vīkṣya bhūpatiḥ..
Then one day, beholding that divine anklet, the king
3.1.9.75
asya nūpuravaryasya tulyaṃ vai nūpurāṃtaram.. 37 ..
reflected earnestly: “Where indeed might a second anklet
3.1.9.76
kuto vā labhyata iti sādaraṃ samaciṃtayat ..
equal to this excellent anklet be obtained?”
3.1.9.77
aśokadattastu tadā vijñāya nṛpakāṃkṣitam .. 38 ..
Aśokadatta, understanding the king's desire at that time,
3.1.9.78
nṛpurāṃtarasi ddhyarthaṃ ciṃtayāmāsa cetasā ..
thought in his mind to obtain the other anklet:
3.1.9.79
śmaśāne nūpuramidaṃ yataḥ prāptaṃ mayā purā ..39..
“Since this anklet was obtained by me in the cremation ground in the past,
3.1.9.80
tāṃ nūpurāṃtaraprāptyai kutra drakṣyāmi sāṃpratam ..
where shall I now see her to obtain the other anklet?”
3.1.9.81
itthaṃ vitarkya bahudhā ni ścikāya mahāmatiḥ..3.1.9.40..
Reflecting thus in many ways, the highly intelligent man resolved:
3.1.9.82
vikreṣyāmi mahāmāṃsaṃ sametya pitṛkānanam..
“I will go to the cremation ground and sell human flesh.
3.1.9.83
tatra rākṣasavetālapiśācādiṣu sarvaśaḥ..41..
There, when the rākṣasas, vetālas, piśācas, and others are summoned from all sides
3.1.9.84
maṃtrairāhūyamāneṣu sāpyāyāsya ti rākṣasī ..
by mantras, that rākṣasī too will come.
3.1.9.85
tāmāgatāṃ balādgṛhya tadgrahīṣyāmi nūpuram..42..
Seizing her by force when she has come, I will take that anklet from her.
3.1.9.86
rākṣasānāṃ sahasraṃ vā piśācānāṃ tathāyutam ..
Whether a thousand rākṣasas, or ten thousand piśācas,
3.1.9.87
vetālānāṃ tathā koṭirna lakṣyaṃ balino mama ..43..
or ten million vetālas—they are nothing to me, who am strong.”
3.1.9.88
iti niścitya manasā śmaśānaṃ sahasā yayau ..
Having so resolved in mind, he immediately went to the cremation ground,
3.1.9.89
vikrīṇāno mahāmāṃsaṃ maṃtrairāhūya rākṣasān ..44..
selling human flesh and summoning the rākṣasas with mantras.
3.1.9.90
gṛhāṇetyuccayā vācā cacāra śrāvayandi śaḥ ..
He walked about, making the directions resound with a loud voice: “Take!”
3.1.9.91
vikrīyate mahāmāṃsaṃ gṛhyatāṃgṛhyatāmiti .. 45 ..
“Human flesh is being sold! Take it, take it!”
3.1.9.92
tatra rākṣasavetālāḥ kaṃkālāśca piśācakāḥ ..
There, rākṣasas, vetālas, skeletons, and piśācas,
3.1.9.93
anye ca bhūtanivahāḥ samājagmuḥ praharṣitāḥ .. .. 46 ..
and other hordes of bhūtas assembled, exceedingly delighted,
3.1.9.94
bhakṣayiṣyāmahe sarve māṃsamiṣṭatamaṃ tviti ..
[saying]: “We shall all eat this most beloved flesh!”
3.1.9.95
tatrāgacchatsu sarveṣu rakṣaḥkanyāsamāvṛtā .. 47 ..
While all of them were arriving there, surrounded by rākṣasa maidens,
3.1.9.96
āyayau rākṣasī sāpi māṃsabhakṣaṇalālasā ..
that rākṣasī also arrived, eager to eat flesh.
3.1.9.97
gaveṣayaṃstadā viprastāṃ samudvīkṣya rākṣasīm.. 48 ..
Searching then, the brahmin looked closely and saw that rākṣasī.
3.1.9.98
seyaṃ dṛṣṭā puretyeṣa pratyabhijñānamāptavān ..
He recognized her, thinking: “She is the one seen previously.”
3.1.9.99
tāmāha dvijaputro'nyaddehi me nūpuraṃ tviti .. 49 ..
The twice-born's son said to her: “Give me the other anklet!”
3.1.9.100
sā tasya vacanaṃ śrutvā prītā vākyamathā'bravīt ..
Hearing his words, pleased, she then said:
3.1.9.101
mamaiva ca tvayā nītaṃ purā vīreṃdra nūpuram .. 3.1.9.50 ..
“It was indeed my anklet, O best of heroes, that you took in the past.
3.1.9.102
gṛhāṇa ratnaruciraṃ dvitīyamapi nūpuram ..
Take the second anklet as well, gleaming with jewels.”
3.1.9.103
ityuktvā nūpuraṃ tasmai svasutāṃ ca dadau priyām.. 51 ..
Having said this, she gave him the anklet and her beloved daughter.
3.1.9.104
vidyutkeśyā tadā dattāṃ priyāṃ vidyutprabhābhidhām ..
Receiving his beloved, named Vidyutprabhā, who was then given by Vidyutkeśī,
3.1.9.105
vipraḥ saṃprāpya mumude rūpayauvanaśāli nīm .. 52 ..
the brahmin was delighted, having obtained her endowed with beauty and youth.
3.1.9.106
vidyutkeśī tu jāmātre hemābjamapi sā dadau ..
Moreover, Vidyutkeśī gave a golden lotus to her son-in-law.
3.1.9.107
vidyutprabhāṃ nūpuraṃ ca hemābjamapilabhya saḥ .. 53 ..
Having obtained Vidyutprabhā, the anklet, and also the golden lotus,
3.1.9.108
śvaśrūmābhāṣya sahasā punaḥ prāyānnṛpāṃtikam..
he bid farewell to his mother-in-law and quickly went back to the king's presence.
3.1.9.109
tataḥ pratāpamukuṭo nūpuraprāptinaṃditaḥ .. 54 ..
Then Pratāpamukuṭa, gladdened by receiving the anklet,
3.1.9.110
śauryadhairyasamāyuktaṃ praśaśaṃsa dvijātmajam..
praised the brahmin's son who was endowed with valor and fortitude.
3.1.9.111
atha vidyutprabhāṃ vipraḥ so'bravīdrahasi priyām..55..
Then the brahmin said in private to his beloved Vidyutprabhā:
3.1.9.112
mātrā tava kuto labdhametaddhemāṃbuja priye..
"O dear one, from where did your mother obtain this golden lotus,
3.1.9.113
etattulyāni cānyāni yataḥ prāpsye varānane..56..
from where I too may obtain others like it, O fair-faced one?"
3.1.9.114
dvijātmajaṃ tataḥ prāha patiṃ vidyutprabhā rahaḥ ..
Then Vidyutprabhā spoke in secret to her husband, the brahmin's son:
3.1.9.115
prabho kapālavisphoṭanāmno vetālabhūpateḥ .. 57 ..
"O lord, of the vetāla-king named Kapālavisphoṭa,
3.1.9.116
asti divyaṃ saraḥ kiṃciddhemāṃbujapariṣkṛtam ..
there is a divine lake adorned with golden lotuses.
3.1.9.117
tava śvaśrvā jalakrīḍāṃ vitanvaṃ tyedamāhṛtam .. 58 ..
This was brought by your mother-in-law while disporting in the water."
3.1.9.118
iti śrutvā vacastatra māṃ nayeti jagāda saḥ ..
Hearing this speech, he said, "Take me there."
3.1.9.119
tataḥ sā sahasā vipraṃ ninye tatkāṃcanaṃ saraḥ .. 59 ..
Then she quickly led the brahmin to that golden lake.
3.1.9.120
tataḥ sa hemapadmānāmājihīrṣurdvijātmajaḥ ..
Then, desiring to take the golden lotuses, the brahmin's son
3.1.9.121
tadviprakāriṇaḥ sarvānvetālādīṃstato'vadhīt .. 3.1.9.60 ..
slew all who obstructed him there, the vetālas and others.
3.1.9.122
svayaṃ kapālavisphoṭaṃ nihatāśeṣasainikam ..
He himself saw Kapālavisphoṭa, whose entire army had been slain,
3.1.9.123
dadarśa vetālapatiṃ taṃ ca haṃtuṃ pracakrame .. 61 ..
the lord of the vetālas, and set about to kill him.
3.1.9.124
atrāṃtare mahātejā nāmnā vijñaptikautukaḥ ..
Meanwhile, the mighty Vidyādhara lord named Vijñaptikautuka,
3.1.9.125
vidyādharapatiḥ prāpya vimānenainamabravīt .. 62 ..
arriving by aerial chariot, said to him:
3.1.9.126
aśokadattaṃ vipreṃdra sāhasaṃ mā kṛthā iti ..
"O best of brahmins, Aśokadatta! Do not commit this rash act!"
3.1.9.127
tadākarṇya dvijasuto vimānavarasaṃsthitam ..63..
Hearing that, the brahmin's son [looked up and] saw stationed in an excellent aerial chariot
3.1.9.128
dadarśa prabhayā yuktaṃ vidyādharapatiṃ divi ..
the lord of Vidyādharas in the sky, endowed with radiant splendor.
3.1.9.129
tasya darśanamātreṇa śāpāmukto dvijā tmajaḥ .. 64 ..
By merely the sight of him, the brahmin's son was released from the curse;
3.1.9.130
saṃtyajya mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ divyaṃ rūpamavāptavān ..
abandoning his human form, he obtained a divine form.
3.1.9.131
vimānavaramārūḍhaṃ divyābharaṇabhūṣitam .. 65 ..
To him, mounted on an excellent aerial chariot and adorned with divine ornaments,
3.1.9.132
śāpānmuktaṃ sukarṇaṃ taṃ prāha vijñapti kautukaḥ ..
to that Sukarṇa freed from the curse, Vijñaptikautuka spoke:
3.1.9.133
ayaṃ sukarṇa te bhrātā gālavasya mahāmuneḥ .. 66 ..
"O Sukarṇa, this brother of yours, by the curse of the great sage Gālava,
3.1.9.134
śāpādvetālatāṃ prāpa tatkanyāsparśapātakī ..
became a vetāla, guilty of touching his daughter.
3.1.9.135
tvaṃ ca śaptaḥ purā tena tatpāpasyānu modakaḥ .. 67 ..
And you were cursed formerly by him for having approved of that sin.
3.1.9.136
tavāyamalpapāpasya śāpo maddarśanāvadhiḥ ..
For you, whose sin was minor, this curse had as its end the darśana of me;
3.1.9.137
kalpistatena muninā śāpāṃto nāsya kalpitaḥ .. 68..
it was fixed by that muni, but no end to his curse was ordained.
3.1.9.138
tadehi muktaśāposi sukarṇa svargamāruha ..
Therefore come, you are freed from the curse, Sukarṇa; ascend to heaven."
3.1.9.139
tataḥ sukarṇastaṃ prāha vidyādharakulādhipam .. 69 ..
Then Sukarṇa said to that lord of the Vidyādhara race:
3.1.9.140
vidyādharapate bhrātrā vinā jyeṣṭhena sāṃpratam ..
"O lord of Vidyādharas, now without my elder brother
3.1.9.141
sarvabhogayutaṃ svargaṃ naiva gaṃtuṃ samutsahe .. 3.1.9.70 ..
I have no desire at all to go to heaven endowed with all enjoyments.
3.1.9.142
śāpasyāṃto yathā bhūyānmama bhrātustathā vada ..
Tell me how an end to my brother's curse may come about."
3.1.9.143
tamuvāca mahātejāstathā vijñaptikautukaḥ .. 71 ..
Then Vijñaptikautuka of great splendor spoke to him:
3.1.9.144
durnivāramimaṃ śāpamanyaḥ ko vā nivārayet ..
"Who else indeed could ward off this difficult-to-avert curse?
3.1.9.145
kiṃ tu guhyatamaṃ kiṃcittava vakṣyāmi sāṃpratam..72..
Nevertheless, I will tell you something most secret now.
3.1.9.146
brahmaṇā sanakādibhyo munibhyaḥ kathitaṃ purā..
It was told formerly by Brahmā to sages such as Sanaka:
3.1.9.147
sarvatīrthāśraye puṇye dakṣiṇasyo dadhestaṭe..73..
On the holy shore of the southern ocean, the refuge of all sacred fords,
3.1.9.148
cakratīrthasamīpe tu tīrthamastimahattaram..
near Cakratīrtha, there is a most great sacred ford,
3.1.9.149
mahāpātakasaṃghāśca yasya darśanamātrataḥ..74..
by the mere darśana of which multitudes of great sins
3.1.9.150
naśyaṃti tatkṣaṇādeva na jāne snānajaṃ phalam..
are destroyed in that very instant; I know not the fruit born of ritual ablution [there].
3.1.9.151
tatra gatvā tava jyeṣṭho yadi snāyānmahattare ..75..
If your elder brother, going there, should bathe in that most great [tīrtha],
3.1.9.152
vetālatvaṃ tyajennūnaṃ tadā gālavaśāpajam..
then he would certainly abandon the state of a vetāla born of Gālava's curse."
3.1.9.153
sukarṇastadvacaḥ śrutvā bhrātrā vetālarūpiṇā ..76..
Hearing his speech, Sukarṇa, accompanied by his brother
3.1.9.154
sahitaḥ sahasā prāyāddakṣiṇasyodadhestaṭam ..
in the form of a vetāla, quickly went to the shore of the southern ocean.
3.1.9.155
dakṣiṇaṃ cakratīrthākhyāduttaraṃ gaṃdhamādanāt .. 77 ..
South of the one called Cakratīrtha and north of Gandhamādana,
3.1.9.156
brahmaṇā sanakādibhyaḥ kathitaṃ tīrthamabhyagāt ..
he arrived at the sacred ford described by Brahmā to Sanaka and the others.
3.1.9.157
tattīrthakūlamāsādya bhrātaraṃ cedamabravīt .. 78 ..
Reaching the bank of that sacred ford, he said this to his brother:
3.1.9.158
bhrātargālavaśāpasya ghorasyāsya nivṛttaye ..
"O brother, for the cessation of this terrible curse of Gālava,
3.1.9.159
tīrthe'sminnacirātsnāhi sarvatīrthottamottame .. 79 ..
bathe without delay in this sacred ford, the highest and best of all sacred fords."
3.1.9.160
tasminna vasare viprāstasya tīrthasya śīkarāḥ ..
At that moment, O brahmins, spray from that sacred ford,
3.1.9.161
nyapataṃstasya gātreṣu vāyunā vai samāhṛtāḥ .. 3.1.9.80 ..
carried along by the wind, fell upon his limbs.
3.1.9.162
sa tacchīkarasaṃsparśāttyaktvā vetālatāṃ tadā ..
From the contact with that spray, abandoning the state of a vetāla then,
3.1.9.163
tadeva mānuṣaṃ bhāvaṃ dvijaputratvamāptavān.. 81 ..
he attained that very same human nature, the state of being a brahmin's son.
3.1.9.164
tataḥ saṃkalpya sahasā tasmiṃstīrthottamottame ..
Then, having made his resolve at once in that best of the best of sacred fords,
3.1.9.165
manuṣyatvanivṛttyarthaṃ nimamajja dvijātmajaḥ .. 82 ..
the brahmin's son plunged in so as to be freed from human existence.
3.1.9.166
uttiṣṭhanneva sahasā divyaṃ rūpamavāptavān ..
Even as he was rising, he immediately attained a celestial form;
3.1.9.167
vimānavaramārūḍho devastrīparivāritaḥ .. 83 ..
he mounted an excellent aerial chariot, surrounded by celestial women.
3.1.9.168
sarvābharaṇasaṃyuktaḥ saha bhrātrā sudarśanaḥ ..
Adorned with every ornament, Sudarśana, together with his brother,
3.1.9.169
ślāghamānaśca tattīrthaṃ namaskatya punaḥpunaḥ .. 84 ..
praising that sacred ford and bowing down repeatedly,
3.1.9.170
vijñaptikautukaṃ cāpi puraskṛtya divaṃ yayau ..
and showing wonderful gratitude, went to heaven.
3.1.9.171
tadāprabhṛti tattīrthaṃ vetālavaradābhidham.. 85 ..
From that time forth, that sacred ford has been called Vetālavarada,
3.1.9.172
vetālatvaṃ vinaṣṭaṃ yacchīkarasparśamātrataḥ ..
because his ghoul-state was destroyed merely by the contact of its spray.
3.1.9.173
ya idaṃ tīrthamāsādya cakratīrthasya dakṣiṇe .. 86 ..
Whoever, having reached this sacred ford to the south of Cakratīrtha,
3.1.9.174
snānaṃ kadācitkurvaṃti jīvanmuktā bhavaṃti te..
takes a ritual bath at any time, becomes liberated while living.
3.1.9.175
etattīrthasamaṃ puṇyaṃ na bhūtaṃ na bhaviṣyati .. 87 ..
Merit equal to this sacred ford has never been nor ever will be,
3.1.9.176
ghorāṃ vetālatāṃ tyaktvā divyatāṃ sa yadāptavān .. 88 ..
since, shedding his terrifying ghoul-state, he attained divinity.
3.1.9.177
atra saṃkalpya ca snātvā vetālavarade śubhe ..
Having made a resolve here and bathed in the auspicious Vetālavarada,
3.1.9.178
pitṛbhyaḥ piṃḍadānaṃ ca kuryādvai niyamānvitaḥ .. 89 ..
one should indeed offer funeral cakes to the ancestors, observing the vows.
3.1.9.179
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprāstasya tīrthasya vaibhavam ..
Thus has the majesty of that sacred ford been told to you, O brahmins,
3.1.9.180
vetālavaradābhikhyā yathā cāsya samāgatā ... .. 3.1.9.90 ..
and how its name Vetālavarada came about.
3.1.9.181
yaḥ paṭhedimamadhyāyaṃ śṛṇuyādvā sa mucyate .. 91 ..
Whoever recites this chapter, or hears it, is liberated.
3.1.9.182
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye vetālavaradatīrthapraśaṃsāyāṃ sudarśanasukarṇaśāpamokṣaṇaṃnāma navamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 9 ..
Thus ends the ninth chapter, titled 'Release from the Curse of Sudarśana and Sukarṇa' in praise of the Vetālavarada sacred ford, in the Setumāhātmya of the third section, Brahmakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
