And the great warrior kṣatriyas were assigned to servitude. / Then all the gods departed as they were, O king. / When the gods had gone, all those twice-born dwelt in that place. / Together with their sons and grandsons, O king, they lived free from all fear. / Knowing the Vedas, they recited the Vedas, here and there expounding the meaning of the scriptures. / Some chanted Viṣṇu here, while others chanted Śiva; / some chanted Brahmā, and some the Yama hymn. / The sacrificers performed sacrifices and tended the sacred fire, / and with the sounds of svāhā, svadhā, and vaṣaṭ, O man of virtuous vows, / the entire three worlds, moving and unmoving, were filled. / And the merchants, highly skilled and eager to serve the twice-born, / dwelt fully devoted in the auspicious, divine Dharmāraṇya. / Food, drink, and everything else—firewood, kuśa grass, fruits, and the like— / those merchants, born of cows, supplied to the twice-born. / Bringing heaps of flowers and offerings, washing bathing-cloths and garments, / plastering with cow dung and the like, sweeping, and other auspicious tasks, / threshing, grinding, and such duties were performed by the merchants' wives; / and by the command of the lord of Kāñcī, they attended upon those brahmins. / At that time all the twice-born were at ease, filled with joy; / day and night, at both twilights, they worshipped the lord of Kāñcī and the others.
Thus ends the tenth chapter, titled “The Description of the Merchants' Acceptance,” in the Dharmāraṇyamāhātmya of the first part of the Brahmakhaṇḍa in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand verses.
