caturthyāmapararātre'bhyaṃtarato'gnimādadhuḥ ..
On the fourth [night], in the latter part of the night, they established the fire inside;
3.2.18.151
āsanaṃ brahmaṇe dattvā agniṃ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam .. 3.2.18.70 ..
offering a seat to Brahmā and circumambulating the fire,
3.2.18.152
sthālīpākaṃ ca kṛtvātha kṛtvā vedīḥ śubhāstadā ..
and having prepared the sthālīpāka offering, they then constructed auspicious altars
3.2.18.153
caturhastāḥ sakalaśā nāgapāśa samanvitāḥ .. 71 ..
of four cubits, provided with water-pitchers and serpent-cords.
3.2.18.154
vedamaṃtreṇa śubhreṇa maṃtrayaṃte tato dvijāḥ ..
Then, with bright Vedic mantras, the twice-born recited sacred formulas,
3.2.18.155
caratāṃ daṃpatīnāṃ hi pariveśya yathocitam .. 72 ..
distributing [offerings] as appropriate for the married couples as they went about.
3.2.18.156
brahmaṇā sahitāstatra vāḍavā ste suharṣitāḥ ..
Along with the Brahman priest there, those brahmins were exceedingly joyful;
3.2.18.157
kurvate vedanirghoṣaṃ tārasvaranināditam .. 73 ..
they raised a loud roar of the Vedas, resounding with high-pitched voices.
3.2.18.158
tena śabdena mahatā kṛtsnamāpūritaṃ nabhaḥ ..
With that great sound, the entire sky was filled.
3.2.18.159
taṃ śrutvā dānavo ghoro vedadhvaniṃ dvije ritam .. 74 ..
Hearing that dreadful sound of the Vedas uttered by the twice-born,
3.2.18.160
utpapātāsanāttūrṇaṃ sasainyo gatacetanaḥ ..
the dānava sprang up swiftly from his seat along with his army, beside himself with fury.
3.2.18.161
dhāvataḥ sarvabhṛtyāstaṃ ye cānye tānuvāca saḥ .. 75 ..
To all his servants running about and to the others, he said:
3.2.18.162
śrūyatāṃ kutra śabdo'yaṃ vāḍavānāṃ samutthitaḥ ..
"Listen! Where has this sound of the brahmins arisen?"
3.2.18.163
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā daiteyāḥ satvaraṃ yayuḥ .. 76 ..
Hearing those words of his, the daityas set out in haste.
3.2.18.164
vibhrāṃtacetasaḥ sarve itaścetaśca dhāvitāḥ ..
With their minds bewildered, they all ran here and there.
3.2.18.165
dharmāraṇye gatāḥ kecittatra dṛṣṭā dvijā tayaḥ .. 77 ..
Some went to Dharmāraṇya, where they saw those brahmins,
3.2.18.166
udgiraṃto hi nigamānvivāhasamaye nṛpa ..
reciting the Vedas at the time of the wedding, O king.
3.2.18.167
sarvaṃ nivedayāmāsuḥ karṇāṭāya durātmane .. 78 ..
They reported everything to the evil-minded Karṇāṭa.
3.2.18.168
tacchrutvā raktatāmrākṣo dvijadviṭ kopapū ritaḥ ..
Hearing that, his eyes blood-red and copper-colored, filled with rage, that enemy of brahmins,
3.2.18.169
abhyadhāvanmahābhāga yatra te daṃpatī nṛpa .. 79 ..
O fortunate one, ran towards the place where that married couple was, O king.
3.2.18.170
khamāśritya tadā daityamāyāṃ kurvansa rākṣasaḥ ..
Then, rising into the sky and employing demonic illusion, that rākṣasa
3.2.18.171
aharaddaṃpatī rājansarvālaṃkārasaṃyutān .. .. 3.2.18.80 ..
carried off the married couple, O king, adorned with all their ornaments.
3.2.18.172
tataste vāḍavāḥ sarve saṃgatā bhuvaneśvarīm ..
Then all those brahmins assembled before Bhuvaneśvarī,
3.2.18.173
buṃbāravaṃ prakurvāṇāstrāhitrāhīti cocire .. 81 ..
raising an alarm of distress and crying, “Save us! Save us!”
3.2.18.174
tacchrutvā viśvajananī mātaṃgī bhuvaneśvarī ..
Hearing that, Mātaṅgī, Bhuvaneśvarī, the mother of the universe,
3.2.18.175
siṃhanādaṃ prakurvāṇā triśūlavaradhāriṇī .. 82 ..
letting out a lion’s roar, bearing an excellent trident,
3.2.18.176
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ devīkarṇāṭayostathā ..
thereupon began the battle between the Goddess and Karṇāṭa,
3.2.18.177
ṛṣīṇāṃ paśyatāṃ tatra vaṇijāṃ ca dvijanmanām .. 83 ..
while the seers, merchants, and twice-born looked on there.
3.2.18.178
paśyatāmabhavayuddhaṃ tumulaṃ lomaharṣaṇam ..
As they watched, a tumultuous battle took place that made the hair stand on end.
3.2.18.179
astraiściccheda mātagī madavihvalitaṃ ripum .. 84 ..
With her weapons Mātaṅgī cut down the enemy, who was overcome with frenzy.
3.2.18.180
so'pi daityastatastasyā bāṇenaikena vakṣasi ..
Then that daitya, too, [struck] her in the chest with a single arrow.
3.2.18.181
asāvapi triśūlena ghātitaḥ kaśmalaṃ gataḥ .. 85 ..
He, too, struck by her trident, fell into a faint.
3.2.18.182
muṣṭibhiścaiva tāṃ devīṃ so'pi tāḍayate'suraḥ ..
That asura struck the Goddess with his fists as well,
3.2.18.183
so'pi devyā tataḥ śīghraṃ nāgapāśena yaṃtritaḥ .. 86 ..
and he, too, was quickly bound by the Goddess with the serpent noose.
3.2.18.184
tatastenaiva daityena garuḍāstraṃ samādadhe ..
Then that daitya discharged the Garuḍa weapon;
3.2.18.185
tayā nārāyaṇāstraṃ tu saṃdadhe śarapātanam..87 ..
she, in turn, aimed the Nārāyaṇa weapon that shot forth arrows.
3.2.18.186
evamanyonyamākṛṣya yudhyamānau jayecchayā ..
Thus grappling with each other, fighting with the desire for victory,
3.2.18.187
tataḥ parighamādāya āyasaṃ daityapuṃgavaḥ .. 88 ..
the foremost among daityas then seized an iron club.
3.2.18.188
mātaṃgīṃ prati saṃkuddho jaghāna paravīrahā ..
Enraged, that slayer of enemy heroes struck at Mātaṅgī.
3.2.18.189
devī kruddhā muṣṭipātaiścūrṇayāmāsa dānavam .. 89 ..
The Goddess, furious, crushed the dānava with blows of her fists.
3.2.18.190
tena muṣṭiprahāreṇa mūrcchito nipapāta ha ..
From that blow of her fist, he swooned and fell down.
3.2.18.191
tatastu sahasotthāya śaktiṃ dhṛtvā kare mudā .. 3.2.18.90 ..
Rising up suddenly, taking up a spear in his hand with joy,
3.2.18.192
śataghnīṃ pātayāmāsa tasyā upari dānavaḥ ..
the dānava hurled a centuple-killer missile upon her.
3.2.18.193
śaktiṃ ciccheda sā devī mātaṃgī ca śubhānanā .. 91 ..
The Goddess Mātaṅgī, of beautiful countenance, cut through that spear;
3.2.18.194
jahāsoccaistu sā subhraḥ śataghnīṃ vajrasannibhā ..
the fair-browed [Goddess] laughed aloud at the centuple-killer resembling a thunderbolt.
3.2.18.195
eva manyonyaśastraughairardayaṃtau parasparam .. 92 ..
Thus tormenting each other with hosts of weapons,
3.2.18.196
tatastriśūlena hato hṛdaye nipapāta ha ..
he was struck in the heart with her trident and fell down.
3.2.18.197
mūrchāṃ vihāya daityo'sau māyāṃ kṛtvā ca rākṣasīm .. 93 ..
Casting off his faint and resorting to demonic illusion,
3.2.18.198
paśyatāṃ tatra teṣāṃ tu adṛśyo'bhūnmahāsuraḥ ..
the great asura became invisible as they watched there.
3.2.18.199
papau pānaṃ tato devī jahāsāruṇalocanā .. 94 ..
Then the Goddess drank liquor and laughed, her eyes red:
3.2.18.200
sarvatragaṃ taṃ sā devī trailokye sacarācare .. 95 ..
