3.2.36.156
viprāṇāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā punarvacanamabravīt .. 73 ..
Having heard the words of the brahmins, he spoke again:
3.2.36.157
.. rājovāca .. ..
The king said:
3.2.36.158
brahmādīnāṃ paraṃ kṣetraṃ dharmāraṇyamanuttamam ..
“Dharmāraṇya is the supreme, unsurpassable sacred field of Brahmā and the others;
3.2.36.159
brahmaviṣṇu maheśādyā nedānīmatra saṃti te .. 74 ..
Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Maheśa, and the rest are not present there now.
3.2.36.160
na dharmo vidyate vātra ukto rāmaḥ sa mānuṣaḥ ..
Nor is righteousness found here; that Rāma you mentioned was a mere mortal!
3.2.36.161
kva vāpi laṃbapucho'sau yo mukto rakṣaṇāya vaḥ .. 75 ..
And where is that long-tailed one who was left to protect you?”
3.2.36.162
śāsanaṃ cenna dṛṣṭaṃ vo naiva tatpālayāmyaham ..
"If your charter is not to be seen, I will not uphold it at all."
3.2.36.163
dvijāḥ kopasamāviṣṭā daduḥ pratyuttaraṃ tadā .. 76 ..
Filled with anger, the twice-born then replied:
3.2.36.164
.. dvijā ūcuḥ .. ..
The twice-born said:
3.2.36.165
re mūḍha tvaṃ kathaṃ vettha bhāṣase madalolupaḥ ..
"Ah, fool! How do you know, speaking greedily through arrogance?
3.2.36.166
sa daityānāṃ vināśāya dharmasaṃrakṣaṇāya ca .. 77 ..
For the destruction of the Daityas and for the protection of dharma,
3.2.36.167
rāmaścaturbhujaḥ sākṣānmānuṣatvaṃ gato bhuvi ..
Rāma, visibly four-armed, took human form on earth.
3.2.36.168
agatīnāṃ ca gatidaḥ sa vai dharmaparāyaṇaḥ ..
He gives refuge to the helpless, and is wholly devoted to dharma;
3.2.36.169
dayāluśca kṛpāluśca jaṃtūnāṃ paripālakaḥ .. 78 ..
He is compassionate, merciful, the protector of living beings."
3.2.36.170
.. rājovāca .. ..
The king said:
3.2.36.171
kuto'dya varttate rāmaḥ kuto vai vāyunaṃdanaḥ ..
"Where is Rāma today? Where indeed is the son of the Wind?
3.2.36.172
bhraṣṭābhramiva te sarve kva rāmo hanumāniti .. 79 ..
Like scattered clouds, all of them—where is Rāma, where is Hanumān?
3.2.36.173
paraṃtu rāmo hanumānyadi vartteta sarvataḥ ..
However, if Rāma and Hanumān are present everywhere,
3.2.36.174
idānīṃ viprasāhāyya āgamiṣyati me matiḥ .. 3.2.36.80 ..
my intention will now turn to helping the brahmins.
3.2.36.175
darśayadhvaṃ hanūmaṃtaṃ rāmaṃ vā lakṣmaṇaṃ tathā ..
Show me Hanumān, or Rāma, or Lakṣmaṇa!
3.2.36.176
yadyasti pratyayaḥ kaścitsa no viprāḥ pradarśyatām ..81..
If there is any proof, let it be shown to us, O brahmins!"
3.2.36.177
uktaṃ tai rāmadevena dūtaṃ kṛtvāṃjanīsutam ..
It was said by them: "Lord Rāma, making the son of Añjanī his messenger,
3.2.36.178
catuścatvāriṃśadadhikaṃ dattaṃ grāmaśataṃ nṛpa .. 62 ..
granted one hundred and forty-four villages, O king!
3.2.36.179
punarāgatya sthāne'smindattā grāmāstrayodaśa ..
Returning again to this place, thirteen villages were given,
3.2.36.180
kāśyapyāṃ caiva gaṃgāyāṃ mahādānāni ṣoḍaśa .. 83 ..
and upon the earth and at the Gaṅgā, the sixteen great gifts
3.2.36.181
dattāni vipramukhyebhyo dattā grāmāḥ suśobhanāḥ ..
were given to the chief brahmins, and magnificent villages were given;
3.2.36.182
punaḥ saṃkalpitā vīra ṣaṭpaṃcāśakasaṃkhyayā .. 84 ..
again they were ordained to the number of fifty-six, O hero!
3.2.36.183
ṣaṭtriṃśacca sahasrāṇi gobhujā jajñire varāḥ ..
Thirty-six thousand excellent landholders were created;
3.2.36.184
sapādalakṣā vaṇijo dattā māṃḍalikābhidhāḥ .. 85 ..
one hundred and twenty-five thousand merchants called Māṇḍalikas were given."
3.2.36.185
tenoktaṃ vāḍavāḥ sarve darśayadhvaṃ hi mārutim ..
By him it was said: "All you brahmins, show me Māruti!
3.2.36.186
yasyābhijñānamātreṇa sthitiṃ pūrvāṃ dadāmyaham .. 86 ..
Merely by token of him, I will restore your former status.
3.2.36.187
vipravākyaṃ kariṣyāmi pratyayo darśyate yadi ..
I will do as the brahmins say, if proof is shown.
3.2.36.188
tataḥ sarve bhaviṣyaṃti vedadharmaparāyaṇāḥ .. 87 ..
Then all will be devoted to Vedic dharma;
3.2.36.189
anyathā jainadharmeṇa varttayadhvaṃ hi sarvaśaḥ ..
otherwise, conduct yourselves entirely according to the Jaina religion."
3.2.36.190
nṛpavākyaṃ tu te śrutvā svesve sthāne samāgatāḥ .. 88 ..
Having heard the king's words, they returned to their respective places.
3.2.36.191
vāḍavaḥ khinnamanasaḥ krodhenāṃdhīkṛtā bhuvi ..
The brahmins, depressed in mind and blinded by anger on the earth,
3.2.36.192
niśvāsānmuṃcamānāste hāheti pravadaṃti ca ..89..
letting out deep sighs, kept crying, "Alas, alas!"
3.2.36.193
daṃtānprāgharṣayansarvānnyapīḍaṃśca karaiḥ karān ..
Grinding their teeth together and wringing their hands,
3.2.36.194
parasparaṃ bhāṣamāṇāḥ kathaṃ kurmo vayaṃ tvitaḥ ..3.2.36.90..
speaking to one another: "What shall we do now?"
3.2.36.195
militvā vāḍavāḥ sarve cakruste maṃtramuttamam ..
Meeting together, all the brahmins held an excellent consultation,
3.2.36.196
rāmavākyaṃ hṛdi dhyātvā dhyātvā caivāṃjanīsutam..91..
meditating in their hearts upon Rāma's word, and meditating upon the son of Añjanī.
3.2.36.197
dvijamelāpakaṃ cakrurbālā vṛddhatamā api ..
The twice-born held an assembly, young and oldest alike.
3.2.36.198
teṣāṃ vṛddhatamo vipro vākyamūce śubhaṃ tadā .. 92 ..
The eldest brahmin among them then spoke auspicious words:
3.2.36.199
catuḥṣaṣṭiśca gotrāṇāmasmākaṃ ye dvisaptatiḥ ..
"Our sixty-four and seventy-two clans,
3.2.36.200

with the family names of their respective lineages, speaking for their single village—
