38. Then, on the next day at dawn, after completing their morning rites, those brahmins went to the royal assembly and delivered the message of venerable Māruti to the king regarding the grant of their villages and livelihoods; upon hearing that message of Māruti spoken by the brahmins, when King Kumārapāla treated it with disrespect, those brahmins threw into the king's doorway one packet containing hair from the left armpit, out of the two packets of armpit hair given by Māruti; as soon as it was thrown, right at that moment, all the wealth of that King Kumārapāla—wives, sons, elephants, horses, and the rest—was burned; the description of the dire plight of the naked Kṣapaṇakas and King Kumārapāla due to that raging fire; then King Kumārapāla took refuge in the presence of those brahmins; then those compassionate brahmins gave the king the packet of hair from the right armpit given by venerable Māruti; as soon as that packet was thrown into the king's doorway, all the king's wealth—wives, sons, elephants, horses, and the rest—was revived, accompanied by the attainment of complete peace; then, having faith in the power of venerable Rāma and Māruti, that king issued and granted to those brahmins a new charter of livelihoods as before, and expelled from his kingdom all the naked Kṣapaṇakas and other heretics outside the Veda; then the assignment of thirty-six thousand well-behaved Gobhuja merchants and Maḍhavīja merchants to serve the brahmins as before; then the description of the title to the charter of livelihoods given by the king belonging only to the three thousand brahmins who had gone to Setubandha; the determination that the fifteen thousand brahmins who broke their solemn vow to go to Setubandha had no right to the village endowments; the residence within Moherakapura of the three thousand brahmins known as Trayīvidyas who kept their vow; the residence in the settlement of Sukhavāsa outside the village of Moheraka of all the fifteen thousand brahmins known as Cāturvidyas who broke their vow; the description of the celebration of the festival of worshiping the family deity on the thirteenth day of the bright half of Pauṣa every year by all those brahmins born in the Moḍha lineage, both Traividyas and Cāturvedīs..... 159 2
