tadā svatanayaṃ bhadre tasmai dehi bahuśrutam ..
Then, O blessed lady, give your learned son to him;
3.3.19.74
phalamasya vratasyāgryaṃ tasya haste samarpaya .. 34 ..
entrust into his hand the supreme fruit of this vow.
3.3.19.75
tataḥ prabhṛti tasyaiva vaśe tiṣṭha sumadhyame ..
From then on, O slender-waisted lady, remain under his authority;
3.3.19.76
yuvayodaihikaḥ saṃgo mābhūtsvapnaratādṛte .. 35 ..
let there be no bodily union between the two of you, except for union in dreams.

.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
3.3.19.82
ityuktvā trijaganmātā dattvā tasyai manoratham ..
Having spoken thus and granted her desire, the Mother of the three worlds
3.3.19.83
tayoḥ saṃpaśyatoreva kṣaṇenādarśanaṃ gatā .. 38 ..
vanished in an instant even as the two of them were watching.
3.3.19.84
sāpi bālā varaṃ labdhvā pārvatyāḥ karuṇānidheḥ ..
That young woman too, having obtained the boon from Pārvatī, the treasure of compassion,
3.3.19.85
avāpa paramānaṃdaṃ pūjayāmāsa taṃ gurum .. 39 ..
attained supreme bliss and worshipped that teacher.
3.3.19.86
tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ sa munirlabdhalocanaḥ ..
When that night had passed, the sage, who had regained his sight
3.3.19.87
tasyāḥ pitrośca tatsarvaṃ rahasyācaṣṭa dharmavit .. 3.3.19.40 ..
and knew dharma, related all that secret to her parents.
3.3.19.88
atha sarvānupāmaṃtrya śāradāṃ ca yaśasvinīm ..
Then, having taken leave of all of them and the glorious Śāradā,
3.3.19.89
vidhāyānugrahaṃ teṣāṃ yayau svairagatirmuniḥ .. 41 ..
having bestowed grace upon them, the sage departed, moving as he pleased.
3.3.19.90
evaṃ dineṣu gacchatsu sā bālā ca pratikṣaṇam ..
As days passed in this manner, that young woman at every moment
3.3.19.91
bhartuḥ samāgamaṃ lebhe svapne sukha vivardhanam .. 42 ..
attained union with her husband in dream, increasing her happiness.
3.3.19.92
gauryā varapradānena śāradā viśadavratā ..
By the granting of the boon by Gaurī, Śāradā of pure vows
3.3.19.93
dadhāra garbhaṃ svapnepi bhartuḥ saṃgānubhāvataḥ .. 43 ..
conceived a child even in a dream, through the power of union with her husband.
3.3.19.94
tāṃ śrutvā bhartṛrahitāṃ śāradāṃ garbhiṇī satīm..
Hearing that the chaste Śāradā was pregnant without a husband,
3.3.19.95
sarve dhigiti procustāṃ jāriṇīti jagurjanāḥ .. 44 ..
all people said 'Fie!' to her, and called her an adulteress.
3.3.19.96
saṃparetasya tadbharturye jātikulavabāṃdhavāḥ ..
The kinsmen of the caste and family of her deceased husband,
3.3.19.97
tāṃ vārtāṃ duḥsahāṃ śrutvā yayustatpitṛmaṃdiram .. 45 ..
hearing that unbearable news, went to her father's house.
3.3.19.98
atha sarve samāyātā grāmavṛddhāśca paṃḍitāḥ ..
Then all the village elders and scholars assembled;
3.3.19.99
samājaṃ cakrire tatra kulavṛddhaiḥ samanvitam .. 46 ..
together with the family elders, they held an assembly there.
3.3.19.100
antarvatnīṃ samāhūya śāradāṃ vinatānanām ..
Summoning the pregnant Śāradā whose face was bowed down,
3.3.19.101
atarjayansusaṃkruddhāḥ kecidāsanparāṅmukhāḥ .. 47 ..
greatly enraged, they scolded her, while some turned their faces away:
3.3.19.102
ayi jāriṇi durbuddhe kimetatte viceṣṭitam ..
"O adulteress! O wicked-minded one! What is this conduct of yours?
3.3.19.103
asmatkule suduṣkīrttiṃ kṛtavatyasi bāliśe .. 48 ..
You have brought great dishonour upon our family, O foolish girl!"
3.3.19.104
iti saṃtarjayaṃtaste grāmavṛddhā manīṣiṇaḥ ..
Thus rebuking her, those wise village elders,
3.3.19.105
sarve saṃmaṃtrayāmāsuḥ kiṃ kurma iti bhāṣiṇaḥ .. 49 ..
saying, "What shall we do?", all took counsel together.
3.3.19.106
tatrocuḥ ke ca vṛddhāstāṃ bālāṃ prati vinirdayāḥ ..
Then certain pitiless elders said concerning that young woman:
3.3.19.107
eṣā pāpamatirbālā kuladvayavināśinī. .. 3.3.19.50 ..
"This evil-minded girl is the destroyer of both families!
3.3.19.108
kṛtvāsyāḥ keśavapanaṃ chittvā karṇau ca nāsikām ..
Shaving her head and cutting off her ears and nose,
3.3.19.109
nirvāsyatāṃ bahirgrāmātparityajya svagotrataḥ .. 51 ..
let her be exiled outside the village, expelled from her own clan!"
3.3.19.110
iti sarve samālocya tāṃ tathā kartumudyatāḥ ..
Thus considering, they all prepared to do so to her.
3.3.19.111
athāṃtarikṣe saṃbhūtā śuśruve vāgagocarā .. 52 ..
Then an unseen voice that arose in the sky was heard:
3.3.19.112
anayā na kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ na caiva kuladūṣaṇam ..
"No sin has been committed by her, nor any defilement of the family;
3.3.19.113
vratabhaṃgo na caitasyāssucaritreyamaṃganā .. 53 ..
there is no breach of vow for her; this woman is of virtuous conduct!
3.3.19.114
itaḥ paramiyaṃ nārī jāriṇīti vadaṃti ye ..
From now on, those who declare this woman to be an adulteress—
3.3.19.115
teṣāṃ doṣavimūḍhānāṃ sadyo jihvā vidīryate .. 54 ..
the tongue of those fools blinded by fault shall split open at once!”
3.3.19.116
ityaṃtarikṣe janitāṃ vāṇīṃ śrutvā'śarīriṇīm ..
Hearing such a bodiless voice produced in the sky,
3.3.19.117
sarve prajahṛṣustasyā jananījanakādayaḥ ..55..
all her family, beginning with her mother and father, rejoiced.
3.3.19.118
tataḥ sasaṃbhramāḥ sarve grāmavṛddhāḥ sabhājanāḥ ..
Then, flustered, all the village elders and assembly members
3.3.19.119
muhūrttaṃ maunamālaṃbya bhītāstasthuradhomukhāḥ ..56..
observed silence for a moment and stood frightened, their faces cast down.
3.3.19.120
tatra kecidaviśvastā mithyāvāṇītyavādiṣuḥ..
Some there, remaining incredulous, said, “This is a false voice.”
3.3.19.121
teṣāṃ jihvā dvidhā bhinnā vavamuste kṛmīnkṣaṇāt .. 57 ..
Their tongues split in two, and in an instant they vomited worms.
3.3.19.122
tataḥ saṃpūjayāmāsustāṃ bālāṃ jñātibāṃdhavāḥ ..
Then the kinsmen and relatives honoured that young girl;
3.3.19.123
bāṃdhavāśca striyo vṛddhāḥ śaśaṃsuḥ sādhusādhviti .. 58 ..
the relatives and elderly women praised her, saying, “Well done! Well done!”
3.3.19.124
mumucuḥ kecidānaṃdabāṣpabiṃdūnkulottamāḥ..
Some of the noble members of the family shed tears of joy;
3.3.19.125
kulastriyaḥ pramuditāstāmuddiśya samāśvasan .. 59 ..
the noble ladies, overjoyed, addressed her and comforted her.
3.3.19.126
atha tatrāpare procurdevo vadati nānṛtam ..
Then others there said, “A god does not speak untruth.
3.3.19.127
kathameṣāṃ dadhau garbhaṃ śīlānna calitā dhruvam .. 3.3.19.60 ..
Yet how did she conceive a child when she surely did not deviate from virtue?”
3.3.19.128
iti sarvānsabhyajanā nsaṃśayāviṣṭacetasaḥ ..
Seeing that all the members of the assembly had minds filled with doubt,
3.3.19.129
vilokya vṛddhastatraiko sarvajño lokatattvavit .. 61 ..
an elder there, omniscient and knowing the true nature of the world, [said]:
3.3.19.130
māyāmayamidaṃ viśvaṃ dṛśyate śrūyate ca yat ..
“This entire universe, whatever is seen and heard, is made of māyā.
3.3.19.131
kiṃ bhāvyaṃ kimabhāvyaṃ vā saṃsāre'sminkṣaṇātmake .. 62 ..
In this world that lasts but a moment, what is possible and what is impossible?
3.3.19.132
anirūpyamabhūtārthaṃ māyayā jāyate sphuṭam ..
Clearly, by māyā that which cannot be defined and which has no physical reality comes into being.
3.3.19.133
īśvarasya vaśe māyā tasya ko veda ceṣṭitam .. 23 ..
Māyā is under the control of Īśvara; who knows his deeds?
3.3.19.134
yūpaketośca rājarṣeḥ śukraṃ nipatitaṃ jale ..
The semen of the royal seer Yūpaketu fell into the water;
3.3.19.135
saśukraṃ tajjalaṃ pītvā veśyā garbhaṃ dadhau kila .. 64 ..
having drunk that water containing semen, a courtesan indeed conceived.
3.3.19.136
munervibhāṃḍakasyāpi śukraṃ pītvā sahāṃbhasā ..
Also, having drunk the semen of the sage Vibhaṇḍaka along with water,
3.3.19.137
hariṇī garbhiṇī bhūtvā ṛṣyaśṛṃgamasūyata .. 65 ..
a doe became pregnant and gave birth to Ṛṣyaśṛṅga.
3.3.19.138
surāṣṭrasya tathā rājñaḥ karaṃ spṛṣṭvā mṛgāṃganā..
Likewise, a doe, having touched the hand of the king of Surāṣṭra,
3.3.19.139
tatkṣaṇādgarbhiṇī bhūtvā muniṃ prāsūta tāpasam .. 66 ..
became pregnant at that very moment and gave birth to an ascetic sage.
3.3.19.140
tathā satyavatī nārī śapharīgarbhasaṃbhavā ..
In the same way, the woman Satyavatī was born from the belly of a carp;
3.3.19.141
tathaiva mahiṣīgarbho jātaśca mahiṣāsuraḥ.. 67 ..
likewise Mahiṣāsura was born from the womb of a she-buffalo.
3.3.19.142
tathā saṃti purā nāryaḥ kāruṇyādgarbhasaṃbhavāḥ..
So too in ancient times there were women who conceived out of compassion;
3.3.19.143
tathā hi vasudevena rohiṇyā stanayo'bhavat .. 68 ..
for in such a manner Rohiṇī had a son through Vasudeva.
3.3.19.144
devatānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ śāpena ca vareṇa ca ..
By the curse or the boon of gods and great seers,
3.3.19.145
ayuktamapi yatkarma yujyate nātra saṃśayaḥ .. 69 ..
even that act which is impossible becomes possible; there is no doubt of this.
3.3.19.146
sāṃbasya jaṭharājjātaṃ musalaṃ muniśāpataḥ ..
From Sāmba's belly an iron club was born due to a sage's curse;
3.3.19.147
yuvanāśvasya garbho'bhūnmunīnāṃ maṃtragauravāt .. 3.3.19.70 ..
Yuvanāśva conceived a child through the power of the sages' mantras.
3.3.19.148
nūnameṣāpi kalyāṇī maharṣeḥ pādasevanāt ..
Surely this auspicious girl too, through attendance on the feet of the great seer
3.3.19.149
mahāvratānubhāvācca dhatte garbhamaniṃ ditā .. 71 ..
and through the power of her great vow, bears a child, blameless as she is.
3.3.19.150
asminnarthe rahasyenāṃ satyaṃ pṛcchaṃtu yoṣitaḥ ..
Concerning this matter, let the women question her in private about the truth;
3.3.19.151
tato nivṛttasaṃdeho bhaviṣyati mahājanaḥ .. 72 ..
then the people will be freed of doubt.”

tatastadvacanādeva tāmapṛcchanstriyo mithaḥ ..
Then, at his very word, the women questioned her in secret;
3.3.19.153
tābhyaḥ śaśaṃsa tatsarvaṃ sā svavṛttaṃ mahādbhutam .. 73 ..
she related to them all her own exceedingly wondrous account.
3.3.19.154
vijānaṃtastataḥ sarve mānayitvā ca tāṃ satīm ..
Understanding [the truth], everyone then honoured that virtuous woman,
3.3.19.155
modamānāḥ praśaṃsaṃtaḥ prayayuḥ svaṃ svamālayam.. 74 ..
and rejoicing and praising [her], departed each to his own home.

atha kāle śubhe prāpte śāradā vimalāśayā ..
Then, when the auspicious time arrived, the pure-minded Śāradā,
3.3.19.157
asūta tanayaṃ bālā bālārkasamatejasam .. 75 ..
a mere girl, gave birth to a son whose splendour equalled the rising sun.
3.3.19.158
sa kumāro mahodāralakṣaṇaḥ kamalekṣaṇaḥ ..
That boy, endowed with exceedingly noble marks and with eyes like lotuses,
3.3.19.159
avāpya mahatīṃ vidyāṃ bālya eva mahāmatiḥ .. 76 ..
attained great learning even in childhood, being of great intellect.
3.3.19.160
athopanīto guruṇā kāle lokamanoramaḥ ..
Then, invested with the sacred thread by his guru in due course, charming to the people,
3.3.19.161
sa śāradeya eveti loke khyāti mavāpa ha .. 77 ..
he acquired fame in the world precisely as ‘Śāradeya’.
3.3.19.162
ṛgvedamaṣṭame varṣe navame yajuṣāṃ gaṇam .
daśame sāmavedaṃ ca līlayādhyagamatsudhīḥ .. 78 ..
The wise boy mastered with ease the Ṛgveda in his eighth year, the collection of Yajus verses in the ninth,
and the Sāmaveda in the tenth year.
3.3.19.163
atha trilokamahite saṃprāpte śivaparvaṇi ..
Then, when the festival of Śiva, revered in the three worlds, had arrived,
3.3.19.164
gokarṇaṃ prayayuḥ sarve janāḥ sarvanivāsinaḥ .. 79 ..
all the people from everywhere set out for Gokarṇa.
3.3.19.165
śāradāpi svaputreṇa gokarṇaṃ prayayau satī .. 3.3.19.80 ..
The virtuous Śāradā too set out for Gokarṇa with her son.
3.3.19.166
tatrāpaśyatsamāyātaṃ sadā svapneṣu lakṣitam ..
There she saw arriving her husband of a previous birth,
3.3.19.167
pūrvajanmani bharttāraṃ dvijabaṃdhujanāvṛtam .. 81 ..
whom she had always seen in dreams, surrounded by his brahmin kinsfolk.
3.3.19.168
taṃ dṛṣṭvā premanirviṇṇā pulakāṃkitavigrahā ..
Seeing him, overwhelmed with love, her body bristling with horripilation,
3.3.19.169
niruddhabāṣpaprasarā tasthau tannyastalocanā .. 82 ..
her flow of tears checked, she stood with her eyes fixed upon him.
3.3.19.170
sa ca vipro'pi tāṃ dṛṣṭvā rūpalakṣaṇalakṣitām..
And that brahmin too, seeing her endowed with beauty and auspicious marks,
3.3.19.171
svapne sadā bhujyamānāmātmano ratidāyinīm . 83 ..
who had always been enjoyed in dreams and brought him delight,
3.3.19.172
taṃ kumāramapi svapne dṛṣṭvā cātma śarīrajam ..
and seeing in the boy the one born of his own body seen in dreams,
3.3.19.173
vilokya vismayāviṣṭastadaṃtikamupāyayau .. 84 ..
was overcome with astonishment and approached her side [saying]:
3.3.19.174
bhadre tvāṃ praṣṭumicchāmi yatkiṃcinmanasi sthitam ..
“Good lady, I wish to ask you something that is on my mind.
3.3.19.175
iti prathamamābhāṣya rahaḥ sthānaṃ nināya tām.. 85..
Having thus addressed her first, he led her to a private place:
3.3.19.176
kā tvaṃ kathaya vāmoru kasya bhāryāsi suvrate ..
"Tell me, fair-thighed one, who are you? Whose wife are you, O lady of good vows?
3.3.19.177
ko deśaḥ kasya vā putrī kinnāmetyabravīcca tām .. 86 ..
What is your country, or whose daughter are you, and what is your name?" Thus he spoke to her.
3.3.19.178
iti tena samāpṛṣṭā sā nārī bāṣpalocanā ..
Being thus questioned by him, that woman, her eyes filled with tears,
3.3.19.179
vyājahārātmanovṛttaṃ bālye vaidhavyakāraṇam .. 87 ..
related her own story, the cause of her widowhood in childhood.
3.3.19.180
punaḥ papraccha tāṃ bālāṃ putraḥ kasyāyamuttamaḥ ..
He questioned that young woman again: "Whose excellent son is this?
3.3.19.181
kathaṃ dhṛto vā jaṭhare bālo'yaṃ caṃdrasannibhaḥ .. 88 ..
And how was this child, resembling the moon, held in your womb?"
3.3.19.182
. śāradovāca .. ..
Śāradā said:
3.3.19.183
eṣa me tanayaḥ svāminsarvavidyāviśāradaḥ..
"This is my son, master, skilled in all fields of knowledge.
3.3.19.184
śāradeya iti prokto mama nāmnaiva kalpitaḥ .. 69 ..
He is called Śāradeya, named after myself alone."
3.3.19.185
iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā vihasya brāhmaṇottamaḥ ..
Having heard her words, that best of brahmins laughed and
3.3.19.186
provāca kaṣṭātkaṣṭaṃ hi caritaṃ tava bhāmini .. 3.3.19.90 ..
said: "Difficult upon difficult indeed is your history, O passionate lady!
3.3.19.187
pāṇigrahaṇamātraṃ te kṛtvā bharttā mṛtaḥ kila ..
Merely taking your hand in marriage, your husband surely died;
3.3.19.188
kathaṃ cāyaṃ suto jātastasya kāraṇamucyatām .. 91 ..
and how was this son born? Let the reason for that be told."
3.3.19.189
iti tenoditāṃ vāṇīmākarṇyātīva lajjitā ..
Hearing the words spoken by him, she was exceedingly bashful;
3.3.19.190
kṣaṇaṃ cāśrumukhī bhūtvā dhairyāditthamabhāṣata .. 92 ..
and having had a tearful face for a moment, out of steadfastness she spoke thus:
3.3.19.191
.. śāradovāca .. ..
Śāradā said:
3.3.19.192
tadalaṃ parihāsoktyā tvaṃ māṃ vetsi mahāmate ..
"Enough of words of ridicule; you know me, O wise one!
3.3.19.193
tvāmahaṃ vedmi cārthe'sminpramāṇaṃ mana āvayoḥ .. 93 ..
And I know you; in this matter, the mind of both of us is the authority."
3.3.19.194
ityuktvā sarvamāvedya devyā dattaṃ varādikam ..
Having spoken thus and disclosed all, beginning with the boon granted by the Goddess,
3.3.19.195
vratasyārdhaṃ kumāraṃ taṃ dadau tasmai dhṛtavratam .. 94 ..
she gave to him that boy who observed the vow, [born from] half of the vow.
3.3.19.196
so'pi pramudito vipraḥ kumāraṃ pratigṛhya tam..
He too, the brahmin, delighted upon receiving that boy,
3.3.19.197
pitroranumatenaiva tāṃ nināya nijālayam .. 95 ..
led her to his own home with the consent of his parents.
3.3.19.198
sāpi sthitvā bahūnmāsāṃstasya viprasya maṃdire ..
She too, having dwelt for many months in that brahmin's house,

tasminkālavaśaṃ prāpte praviśyāgniṃ tamanvagāt .. 96 ..
when he succumbed to time, entered the fire and followed him.
