evaṃ śivatamaḥ paṃthāḥ śivenaiva pradarśitaḥ ..
Thus the most auspicious path has been shown by Śiva himself,
3.3.22.3
nṛṇāṃ saṃsṛtibaddhānāṃ sadyomuktikaraḥ paraḥ .. 1 ..
the supreme path that brings immediate liberation to men bound in transmigratory existence. // 1
3.3.22.4
atha durmedhasāṃ puṃsāṃ vedeṣvanadhikāriṇām ..
Now, for dull-witted men, for those not eligible for the Vedas,

strīṇāṃ dvijātibaṃdhūnāṃ sarveṣāṃ ca śarīriṇām .. 2 ..
for women, for uninitiated kinsmen of the twice-born, and for all embodied beings, // 2

eṣa sādhāraṇaḥ paṃthāḥ sākṣātkaivalyasādhanaḥ ..
this common path directly accomplishes absolute liberation;

mahāmunijanaiḥ sevyo devairapi supūjitaḥ ..3..
it is to be cultivated by great sages and is well worshipped even by the gods: // 3
3.3.22.8
yatkathāśravaṇaṃ śaṃbhoḥ saṃsārabhayanāśanam ..
namely, hearing the stories of Śambhu, which destroys the fear of rebirth,

This is a lamp that grants the attainment of knowledge to those blinded by the darkness of ignorance,
3.3.22.11
bhavaroganibaddhānāṃ susevyaṃ paramauṣadham .. 5 ..
and the supreme medicine to be properly taken by those afflicted by the disease of worldly existence. // 5
3.3.22.12
mahāpātakaśailānāṃ vajraghātasudāruṇam ..
It is a very fierce thunderbolt strike against the mountains of great sins,
3.3.22.13
bharjanaṃ karmabījānāṃ sādhanaṃ sarva saṃpadām .. 6 ..
[it is] the roasting of the seeds of karma, the means of achieving all prosperity. (6)
3.3.22.14
ye śṛṇvaṃti sadā śambhoḥ kathāṃ bhuvanapāvanīm ..
Those who always listen to the world-purifying story of Śambhu—
3.3.22.15
te vai manuṣyā lokesminrudrā eva na saṃśayaḥ .. 7 ..
those men in this world are Rudras indeed, without a doubt. (7)
3.3.22.16
śṛṇvatāṃ śūlino gāthāṃ tathā kīrtayatāṃ satām ..
For those who hear the praise of the Trident-Bearer, and likewise for the good who recite it,

the dust of their feet alone has been proclaimed by sages to be sacred fords. (8)
3.3.22.18

Therefore, whatever embodied beings desire to attain the highest good,
3.3.22.19
te śṛṇvaṃtu sadā bhaktyā śaivīṃ paurāṇikīṃ kathām .. 9 ..
let them always listen with devotion to the Purāṇic narrative about Śiva. (9)
3.3.22.20
yadyaśaktaḥ sadā śrotuṃ kathāṃ paurāṇikīṃ naraḥ ..
If a man is unable to listen constantly to the Purāṇic story,
3.3.22.21
muhūrtaṃ vāpi śṛṇuyānniyatātmā dinedine .. 3.3.22.10 ..
he should listen, self-restrained, even for a muhūrta, day by day. (10)
3.3.22.22
atha pratidinaṃ śrotumaśakto yadi mānavaḥ ..
Moreover, if a man is unable to listen every day,
3.3.22.23
puṇyamāseṣu vā puṇye dine puṇyatithiṣvapi .. 11 ..
then in holy months, or on an auspicious day, or on holy lunar days, (11)
3.3.22.24
yaḥ śṛṇoti kathāṃ ramyāṃ purāṇaiḥ samudīritām ..
he who listens to the charming narrative proclaimed by the Purāṇas,

a man obtains that fruit from hearing a Purāṇa just once. (14)
3.3.22.30
kalau yuge viśeṣeṇa purāṇaśravaṇādṛte ..
Particularly in the Kali age, apart from hearing the Purāṇas,
3.3.22.31
nāsti dharmaḥ paraḥ puṃsāṃ nāsti muktipathaḥ paraḥ .. 15 ..
there is no higher duty for men, nor is there any higher path to liberation. (15)
3.3.22.32
purāṇaśravaṇācchaṃbhornāsti saṃkīrtanaṃ param ..
There is no higher chanting of praise to Śambhu than hearing the Purāṇa;

for this reason it is for mankind the great fruit of the wishing tree. (16)

prepared for their welfare the nectar called the Purāṇa. (18)
3.3.22.38
pibannevāmṛtaṃ yatnādetatsyādajarāmaraḥ ..
Drinking this nectar with effort, one becomes free from old age and death;
3.3.22.39
śambhoḥ kathāmṛtaṃ kuryātkulamevājarāmaram .. 19 ..
the nectar-story of Śambhu renders one’s very lineage ageless and immortal. (19)

There are gurus in the worlds by virtue of birth and also by virtue of qualities;
3.3.22.45
teṣāmapi ca sarveṣāṃ purāṇajñaḥ paro guruḥ .. 22 ..
yet even among all of them, the knower of the Purāṇas is the supreme guru. (22)

purāṇajñaḥ śucirdāṃtaḥ śāṃto vijitamatsaraḥ ..
Pure, self-controlled, calm, having overcome envy,
3.3.22.49
sādhuḥ kāruṇyavānvāgmī vadetpuṇyakathāṃ sudhī .. 24 ..

before such crooked persons he must never recite the story. (26)

na durjanasamākīrṇe na śūdraśvāpadāvṛte ..
Neither in a place crowded with wicked people, nor one surrounded by Śūdras and wild beasts,
3.3.22.55
deśe na dyūtasadane vadetpuṇyakathāṃ sudhīḥ .. 27 ..
nor in a gambling house should the wise man recite the holy narrative. (27)
3.3.22.56
sadgrāme sujanākīrṇe sukṣetre devatālaye ..
In a good village filled with virtuous people, in a good sacred field, in a temple of the deities,
3.3.22.57
puṇye nadanadītīre vadetpuṇyakathāṃ sudhīḥ .. 28 ..

3.3.22.103
japasvādhyāyarahitāḥ parastrī viṣayāturāḥ .. 51 ..
lacking recitation of mantras and study of scriptures, afflicted with desire for other men's wives. 51
3.3.22.104
kṛṣīvalāḥ śastradharā nirdevā jihmavṛttayaḥ ..
They were farmers, bearers of weapons, godless, of crooked conduct;
3.3.22.105
na jānaṃti paraṃ dharmaṃ jñānavairāgyalakṣaṇam .. 52 ..
they did not know the highest dharma characterised by knowledge and dispassion. 52
3.3.22.106
striyaśca pāpaniratāḥ svairi ṇyaḥ kāmalālasāḥ..

durbuddhayaḥ kuṭilagāḥ sadgatācāravarjitāḥ .. 53 ..
evil-minded, wandering crookedly, devoid of good conduct. 53

he was the husband of a courtesan and, though married, went astray. 54
3.3.22.110
svapatnīṃ baṃdulāṃ nāma hitvā pratiniśaṃ tathā ..
Leaving his own wife named Bandulā every night,
3.3.22.111
veśyābhavanamāsādya ramate smarapīḍitaḥ .. 55 ..
he would go to a courtesan's house and make love, afflicted by love. 55
3.3.22.112
sāpi tasyāṃganā rātrau viyuktā navayauvanā ..
That young woman too, his wife in fresh youth, left alone at night,
3.3.22.113
asahaṃtī smarāveśaṃ reme jāreṇa saṃgatā .. 56 ..
unable to endure the surge of passion, coupled and made love with a paramour. 56
3.3.22.114
tāṃ kadāciddurācārāṃ jāreṇa saha saṃgatām ..
Seeing that wicked woman once coupled with her paramour,
3.3.22.115
dṛṣṭvā tasyāḥ patiḥ krodhādabhi dudrāva satvaraḥ .. 57 ..
her husband in anger quickly rushed at her. 57
3.3.22.116
jāre palāyite patnīṃ gṛhītvā sa durāśayaḥ ..
When the paramour had fled, that evil-minded man seized his wife,
3.3.22.117
saṃtāḍya muṣṭibaṃdhena muhurmuhuratāḍayat .. 58 ..
and striking her with clenched fists, beat her again and again. 58
3.3.22.118
sā nārī pīḍitā bhartrā kupitā prāha nirbhayā ..
That woman, tormented by her husband, grew furious and spoke fearlessly:
3.3.22.119
bhavānpratiniśaṃ veśyāṃ ramate kā gatirmama .. 59 ..
"You make love to a courtesan every night; what is my recourse? 59
3.3.22.120
ahaṃ rūpavatī yoṣā navayauvanaśālinī ..
I am a beautiful woman, endowed with fresh youth;
3.3.22.121
kathaṃ sahiṣye kāmārtā tava saṃgativarjitā .. 3.3.22.60 ..
how can I, tormented by desire, endure being deprived of your company?" 60
3.3.22.122
ityuktaḥ sa tayā tanvyā provāca brāhmaṇādhamaḥ ..
Addressed thus by that slender woman, that vile brahmin said:
3.3.22.123
yuktameva tvayoktaṃ hi tasmādvakṣyāmi te hitam .. 61 ..
"Indeed you have spoken rightly; therefore I will tell you what is beneficial: 61
3.3.22.124
jārebhyo dhanamākṛṣya tebhyo dehi parāṃ ratim ..
extracting wealth from lovers, grant them highest sexual pleasure.
3.3.22.125
taddhanaṃ dehi me sarvaṃ paṇyastrīṇāṃ dadāmi tat .. 62 ..
Give all that wealth to me; I will give that to the courtesans. 62
3.3.22.126
evaṃ saṃpūryate kāmo mamāpi ca varānane ..
In this way my desire will also be fulfilled, O fair-faced woman!"
3.3.22.127
tatheti bhartṛvacanaṃ pratijagrāha sā vadhūḥ .. 63 ..
"So be it," that wife accepted the words of her husband. 63
3.3.22.128
evaṃ tayostu daṃpatyordurācārapravṛttayoḥ ..
As the couple engaged in such wicked conduct,
3.3.22.129
kālena nidhanaṃprāptaḥ sa vipro vṛṣalīpatiḥ .. 64 ..
in time that brahmin, a keeper of an unchaste woman, met his death. 64

ekadā daivayogena saṃprāpte puṇyaparvaṇi ..
One day, through the force of destiny, when an auspicious festival arrived,
3.3.22.133
sā nārī baṃdhubhiḥ sārdhaṃ gokarṇaṃ kṣetra māyayau .. 66 ..
that woman went with her relatives to the sacred field of Gokarṇa.
3.3.22.134
tatra tīrthajale snātvā kasmiṃściddevatālaye ..
Having bathed there in the water of the sacred ford, in a certain temple of the deity,
3.3.22.135
śuśrāva devamukhyānāṃ puṇyāṃ paurāṇikīṃ kathām .. 67 ..
she heard the sacred purāṇic story of the foremost among gods:
3.3.22.136
yoṣitāṃ jārasaktānāṃ narake yamakiṃkarāḥ ..
"For women attached to lovers, Yama's servants in hell
3.3.22.137
saṃtaptalohaparighaṃ kṣipaṃti smaramaṃdire .. 68 ..
thrust a heated iron bar into the abode of Kāma."
3.3.22.138
iti paurāṇikenoktāṃ sā śrutvā dharmasaṃhitām ..
Hearing this code of righteousness spoken by the purāṇic reciter,
3.3.22.139
tamuvāca rahasyeṣā bhītā brāhmaṇapuṃgavam .. 69 ..
terrified, she spoke in secret to that foremost of brahmins:
3.3.22.140
brahmanpāpamajānaṃtyā mayācaritamulbaṇam ..
"O brahmin, not knowing, I committed terrible sin,
3.3.22.141
yauvane kāmacāreṇa kauṭilyena pravartitam .. 3.3.22.70 ..
acting in youth through willful conduct and deceit.
3.3.22.142
idaṃ tvadvacanaṃ śrutvāpurāṇārthavijṛṃbhi tam ..
Hearing this word of yours revealing the meaning of the Purāṇa,
3.3.22.143
bhītirme mahatī jātā śarīraṃ vepate muhuḥ .. 71 ..
a great fear has arisen in me, and my body trembles constantly.
