4.20.154
paritaḥ pariveṣābhaṃ sūryasyoccaiḥ sphuratprabham ..
flashing with intense radiance all around, resembling a solar halo,
4.20.155
rakṣaṇāya ca rakṣobhyastasyādhokṣaja nirmitam .. 77 ..
and created by Adhokṣaja to protect him from evil spirits.
4.20.156
bhūtāvalī tamālokya sphuraccakrasudarśanam ..
Beholding that Sudarśana discus flashing,
4.20.157
jvālāmālākulaṃ tīvraṃ rakṣaṃtaṃ parito dhruvam .. 78 ..
terrific, filled with garlands of flames, protecting Dhruva on all sides,
4.20.158
atīva niṣkaṃpahṛdaṃ govidārpitacetasam ..
and [Dhruva] whose heart was utterly unshaken, his mind surrendered to Govinda,
4.20.159
tapoṃkuramivodbhidya medinīṃ samuditvaram .. 79 ..
rising up like a sprout of austerity that had broken through the earth,
4.20.160
sāpi pratyutabhītātaṃ dhruvaṃ dhruvaviniścayam ..
that host, conversely filled with fear, bowed down to Dhruva,
4.20.161
namaskṛtya yathāyātaṃ yātāvyarthamanorathā .. 4.1.20.80 ..
who was steadfast in his resolve, and departed just as they had come, their purpose thwarted.
4.20.162
garjatkādaṃbinījālaṃ vyomni vai vyākulaṃ yathā ..
Just as a bank of roaring clouds gathered agitatedly in the sky
4.20.163
vṛthā bhavati saṃprāpya manāganilalolatām .. 81 ..
becomes scattered in vain upon meeting the slightest gust of wind, [so did they].
4.20.164
atha jaṃbhāriṇā sārdhaṃ bhītāḥ sarve divaukasaḥ ..
Then all the gods, frightened, together with Indra,
4.20.165
saṃmaṃtrya tvaritā jagmurbrahmāṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ dvija .. 82 ..
took counsel and swiftly went to Brahmā for refuge, O twice-born.
4.20.166
natvā vijñāpayāmāsuḥ pariṣṭutyā pitāmaham ..
Having bowed down and praised the Grandfather,
4.20.167
vacro'vasaramālokya pṛṣṭāgamanakāraṇāḥ .. 83 ..
and seeing an opportunity to speak when asked the reason for their coming,
4.20.168
.. devā ūcuḥ .. ..
The gods said:
4.20.169
dhātaruttānapādasya tanayena suvarcasā ..
“O Creator, by the radiant son of Uttānapāda
4.20.170
tapatā tāpitāḥ sarve trilokī talavāsinaḥ .. 84 ..
who is practicing austerities, all the dwellers of the three worlds are tormented.
4.20.171
samyaksaṃvidmahe tāta dhuvasya na manīṣitam ..
O Father, we do not clearly know Dhruva's desire:
4.20.172
padaṃ parijihīrṣuḥ sa kasyāsmāsu mahātapāḥ .. 85 ..
whose position among us does that boy of great austerity wish to seize?”
4.20.173
iti vijñāpito devairvihasya caturānanaḥ ..
Thus addressed by the gods, the Four-Faced One smiled,
4.20.174
pratyuvācātha tānsarvāndhruvato bhītamānasān .. 86 ..
and then replied to all of them whose minds were frightened of Dhruva:
4.20.175
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
4.20.176
na bhetavyaṃ surāstasmāddhruvāddhruvapadaiṣiṇaḥ ..
“O gods, you must not fear Dhruva, who seeks a permanent abode;
4.20.177
vrajaṃtu vijvarāḥ sarve na sa vaḥ padamicchati .. 87 ..
go, all of you, free from anxiety: he does not desire your position.
4.20.178
na tasmādbhagavadbhaktādbhetavyaṃ kenacitkvacit ..
No one, anywhere, need ever fear that devotee of the Lord;
4.20.179
niścitaṃ viṣṇubhaktā ye na te syuḥ paratāpinaḥ .. 88 ..
certainly those who are devotees of Viṣṇu never afflict others.
4.20.180
ārādhya viṣṇuṃ deveśaṃ labdhvā tasmātsvakāṃkṣitam ..
Having worshipped Viṣṇu, the Lord of gods, and obtained his own desire from him,
4.20.181
bhavatāmapi sarveṣāṃ padāni sthirayiṣyati .. 89 ..
he will indeed make stable the positions of all of you as well.”
4.20.182
niśamyeti ca gīrvāṇāḥ praṇītaṃ brahmaṇo vacaḥ ..
Having heard this speech uttered by Brahmā, the gods
4.20.183
praṇipatya svadhiṣṇyāni prahṛṣṭāḥ parivavrajuḥ .. 4.1.20.90 ..
bowed down and, greatly delighted, returned to their respective abodes.
4.20.184
atha nārāyaṇo devastaṃ dṛṣṭvā dṛḍhamānasam ..
Then the lord Nārāyaṇa, seeing that steadfast-minded boy
4.20.185
ananyaśaraṇaṃ bālaṃ gatvā tārkṣyaratho'bravīt .. 91 ..
who had no other refuge, went on his chariot drawn by Garuḍa and spoke:
4.20.186
śrīviṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Glorious Viṣṇu said:
4.20.187
prasannosmi mahābhāga varaṃ varaya suvrata ..
“I am pleased, O fortunate one of noble vows; choose a boon!
4.20.188
tapaso'smānnivartasva ciraṃ khinnosi bālaka .. 92 ..
Desist from this austerity, O boy; you have been exhausted for a long time.”
4.20.189
vaco'mṛtaṃ samākarṇya paryunmīlya vilocane ..
Having heard that nectar of speech, opening both his eyes,
4.20.190
iṃdranīlamaṇijyotiḥ paṭalīṃ paryalokayat .. 93 ..
he beheld an expanse of radiance like sapphire gems,
4.20.191
pratyagravikasannīlotpalānāṃ nikuraṃbakaiḥ ..
as if heaven and earth were a lake blossoming all around
4.20.192
protphullitāṃ samaṃtācca rodasī sarasīmiva .. 94 ..
with clusters of freshly blooming blue lotuses,
4.20.193
lakṣmīdevīkaṭākṣoghaiḥ kaṭākṣitamivākhilam ..
and as if the whole universe were surveyed by the streams of glances of the goddess Lakṣmī;
4.20.194
dhuvastadāniraikṣiṣṭa dyāvābhūmyoryadaṃtaram .. 95 ..
Dhruva then saw that space between heaven and earth.
4.20.195
prodyatkādaṃbinīmadhya vidyuddāmasamānaruk ..
Resplendent like a streak of lightning in the midst of a rising bank of clouds,
4.20.196
puraḥ pītāṃbaraḥ kṛṣṇastena netrātithīkṛtaḥ .. 96 ..
Kṛṣṇa, clad in yellow garments, was received by him as a guest to his eyes.
4.20.197
nabho nikaṣa pāṣāṇo merukāṃcana rekhitaḥ ..
As if the sky were a touchstone marked with a line of gold from Meru,
4.20.198
yathātathā dhruveṇaikṣi tadā garuḍavāhanaḥ .. 97 ..
even so was the one whose vehicle is Garuḍa beheld then by Dhruva.
4.20.199
sunīlagaganaṃ yadvadbhūṣitaṃ tu kalāvatā ..
Just as the deep-blue sky is adorned by the moon,
4.20.200
pītena vāsasā yuktaṃ sa dadarśa hariṃ tadā .. 98 ..
even so he saw Hari then, adorned with yellow garments.
