all yielding the single fruit of good deeds, endowed with all prosperity. 38

set in ornaments on the bodies of Nāgas—with what can that Pātāla be compared? 41
4.22.86
daityadānavakanyābhiritaścetaśca śobhite ..
In Pātāla, adorned on all sides by daughters of Daityas and Dānavas,
4.22.87
pātāle kasya na prītirvimuktasyāpi jāyate .. 42 ..
in whom would joy not arise, even in one who is liberated? 42

divārkaraśmayastatra prabhāṃ tanvaṃti nātapam..
There the sun's rays spread light by day, not heat,

are enjoyed by Daityas and serpents whose domain lies within Pātāla.
4.22.98
pātālebhyopi vai ramyaṃ dvija varṣamilāvṛtam..
Even more delightful than the Pātālas, O brahmin, is the Ilāvṛta realm,
4.22.99
ratnasānuṃ samāśritya paritaḥ parisaṃsthitam..48..
which extends all around, resting against the mountain peak of gems,
4.22.100
sadā sukṛtino yatra sarvabhogabhujo dvija..
where the meritorious ever enjoy all pleasures, O brahmin,
4.22.101
navayauvanasaṃpannā nityaṃ yatra mṛgīdṛśaḥ ..49..
and where deer-eyed maidens are endowed with eternal, fresh youth.
4.22.102
bhogabhūmiriyaṃ proktā śreyo vinimayārjitā ..
This is declared to be a land of enjoyment, earned in exchange for virtue;
4.22.103
bhujyate tvadvidhairlokaistīrthābhityakta dehakaiḥ .. 4.1.22.50 ..
it is enjoyed by people like you who have relinquished their bodies at sacred fords,
4.22.104
aklībabhāṣibhiścāpi putrakṣetrādyahīnakaiḥ ..
by those who speak without cowardice and are not bereft of sons, fields, and the like,
4.22.105
paropakārasaṃkṣīṇasukhāyurdhanasaṃcayaiḥ .. 51 ..
whose stores of happiness, life, and wealth have been expended for the benefit of others.
4.22.106
saṃti dvīpā hyanekā vai pārāvārāṃtarasthitāḥ ..
Indeed, there are many continents situated amidst the oceans,
4.22.107
jaṃbūdvīpasamo dvīpo na kvāpi jagatītale .. 52 ..
yet nowhere on the surface of the earth is there a continent equal to Jambūdvīpa.
4.22.108
tatrāpi navavarṣāṇi bhārataṃ tatra cottamam ..
Even there, among the nine realms, Bhārata is the foremost.
4.22.109
karmabhūmiriyaṃ proktā devānāmapidurlabhā ..53..
This is declared to be the realm of action, difficult even for the gods to attain.
4.22.110
aṣṭau kiṃpuruṣādīni devabhogyāni tāni tu ..
The eight other realms, such as Kiṃpuruṣa, are for the enjoyment of the gods;
4.22.111
teṣu svargātsamāgatya ramaṃte tridivaukasaḥ .. 54 ..
descending from heaven, the inhabitants of paradise disport themselves in them.
4.22.112
yojanānāṃ sahasrāṇi navavistāratastvidam ..
Nine thousand yojanas in extent,
4.22.113
bhārataṃ prathamaṃ varṣaṃ merordakṣiṇataḥ sthitam .. 55 ..
this first realm, Bhārata, lies to the south of Meru.
4.22.114
tatrāpi himaviṃdhyādreraṃtaraṃ puṇyadaṃ param ..
Even there, the region between the Himālaya and the Vindhya mountains yields supreme merit.
4.22.115
gaṃgāyamunayormadhye hyaṃtarvedī bhuvaḥ parāḥ .. 56 ..
Between the Gaṅgā and the Yamunā, the Antarvedī is supreme on earth.
4.22.116
kurukṣetraṃ hi sarveṣāṃ kṣetrāṇāmadhikaṃ tataḥ ..
Kurukṣetra is indeed superior to all sacred fields;
4.22.117
tatopi naimiṣāraṇyaṃ svargasādhanamuttamam .. 57 ..
and even greater than that is Naimiṣāraṇya, the supreme means to heaven.
4.22.118
naimiṣāraṇyatopīha sarvasminkṣitimaṃḍale ..
Even more than Naimiṣāraṇya in this entire orb of the earth,
4.22.119
sarvebhyopi hi tīrthebhyastīrtharājo viśiṣyate .. 58 ..
the King of Tīrthas excels above all sacred fords.
4.22.120
svargadomokṣadaścaiva sarvakāmaphalapradaḥ ..
Bestowing heaven and granting liberation, fulfilling every desired fruit,
4.22.121
prayāgastanmahatkṣetraṃ tīrtharāja iti smṛtaḥ .. 69 ..
that great sacred field is Prayāga, renowned as the King of Tīrthas.
4.22.122
yāgāḥ sarve mayā pūrvaṃ tulayā vidhṛtā dvija ..
In former times, O brahmin, all sacrifices were weighed by me on a scale,
4.22.123
tacca tīrthavaraṃ ramyaṃ kāmikaṃ kāmapūraṇāta .. 4.1.22.60 ..
against that excellent and delightful sacred ford, desirable for fulfilling desires.
4.22.124
dṛṣṭvā prakṛṣṭayāgebhyaḥ puṣṭebhyo dakṣiṇādibhiḥ ..
Seeing that it surpassed eminent sacrifices replete with priestly fees and the like,
4.22.125
prayāgamiti tannāma kṛtaṃ hariharādibhiḥ .. 61 ..
Hari, Hara, and the other deities gave it the name 'Prayāga'.
4.22.126
nāmamātrasmṛteryasya prayāgasya trikālataḥ ..
From the mere remembrance of its name, of Prayāga at the three junctions of the day,
4.22.127
smartuḥ śarīre no jātu pāpaṃ vasati kutracit .. 62 ..
sin never resides anywhere in the body of the one who remembers.
4.22.128
saṃti tīrthānyanekāni pāpatrāṇakarāṇi ca ..
There are many sacred fords that protect from sin,
4.22.129
na śaktānyadhikaṃ dātuṃ kṛtainaḥ pariśuddhitaḥ .. 63 ..
yet they are unable to grant anything beyond the cleansing of committed sins.
4.22.130
janmāṃtareṣvasaṃkhyeṣu yaḥ kṛtaḥ pāpasaṃcayaḥ ..
The heap of sins accumulated across countless past births,
4.22.131
duṣpraṇodyo hi nitarāṃ vratairdānaistapojapaiḥ .. 64 ..
which is extremely difficult to dispel by vows, gifts, austerities, and recitations,
4.22.132
sa tīrtharājagamanodyatasya śubhajanmanaḥ ..
trembles exceedingly in the limbs of a person of auspicious birth
4.22.133
aṃgeṣu vepate'tyaṃtaṃ drumo vātahato yathā .. 65 ..
who sets out for the King of Tīrthas, like a tree buffeted by the wind.
4.22.134
tataḥ krāṃtārdhamārgasya prayāga dṛḍhacetasaḥ ..
Then, when a man of resolute mind has traversed half the way to Prayāga,
4.22.135
puṃsaḥ śarīrānniryātumapekṣeta padāṃtaram .. .. 66..
[the sin] seeks another footstep to depart from his body.
4.22.136
bhāgyānnetrātithībhūte tīrtharāje mahātmanaḥ ..
When, by good fortune, the King of Tīrthas becomes a guest to the eyes of the noble-souled one,
4.22.137
palāyate drutataraṃ tamaḥ sūryodaye yathā .. 67 ..
[sin] flees with great speed, like darkness at sunrise.
4.22.138
saptadhātumayī bhūtatanau pāpāni yāni vai ..
Whatever sins reside in the physical body made of seven bodily elements,
4.22.139
keśeṣu tāni tiṣṭhaṃti vapanādyāṃti tānyapi .. 68 ..
they settle in the hair, and they too depart with the shaving [of the head].
4.22.140
evaṃ niṣkaluṣībhūya tataḥ snāyātsitāsite ..
Having thus become free of taint, he should then bathe in the confluent waters of the white and dark [rivers];
4.22.141
yaṃyaṃ kāmamabhidhyāyaṃstaṃ tamāpnoti nānyathā .. 69 ..
whatever desire he contemplates, that very desire he obtains, without fail.
4.22.142
puṇyarāśiṃ ca vipulaṃ puṇyānbhogānyathepsitān ..
An abundant store of merit and virtuous enjoyments as desired,
4.22.143
svargaṃ prāpnoti tatpuṇyānniṣkāmo mokṣamāpnuyāt .. 4.1.22.70 ..
he attains heaven by that merit; while one without desires attains liberation.
4.22.144
snāyādyobhilaṣanmokṣaṃ kāmānanyānvihāya ca ..
Whoever bathes desiring liberation, having cast aside all other desires,
4.22.145
sopi mokṣamavāpnoti kāmadāttīrtharājataḥ .. 71 ..
he too attains liberation from the desire-granting King of Tīrthas.
4.22.146
tīrtharājaṃ parityajya yo'nyasmātkāmamicchati ..
Whoever, abandoning the King of Tīrthas, desires fulfillment from another
4.22.147
bhāratākhye mahāvarṣe sa kāmaṃ nāpnuyātsphuṭam .. 72 ..
in the great realm named Bhārata, clearly will not attain his desire.
4.22.148
satyaloke prayāge ca nāṃtaraṃ vedmyahaṃ dvija ..
I perceive no difference between Satyaloka and Prayāga, O brahmin;
4.22.149
tatra ye śubhakarmāṇaste mallokanivāsinaḥ .. 73 ..
those who perform auspicious deeds there are dwellers in my realm.
4.22.150
tīrthābhilāṣibhirmartyaissevyaṃ tīrthāṃtaraṃ nahi ..
Mortals longing for a sacred ford need not resort to any other tīrtha
4.22.151
anyatra bhūmivalaye tīrtharājātprayā gataḥ ..74..
elsewhere on the circle of the earth, than to Prayāga, the King of Tīrthas.
4.22.152
yathāṃtaraṃ dvijaśreṣṭha bhūpetvitarasevake ..
Just as the difference, O best of brahmins, between a king and an ordinary servant,
4.22.153
dṛṣṭāṃtamātraṃ kathitaṃ prayāgetara tīrthayoḥ ..75..
such is the analogy declared between Prayāga and other sacred fords.
4.22.154
yathākathaṃcittīrthe'sminprāṇatyāgaṃ karoti yaḥ ..
Whoever in any manner gives up his life in this sacred ford,
4.22.155
tasyātmaghātadoṣo na prāpnuyādīpsitānyapi .. 76 ..
incurs no fault of suicide and attains his desired goals.
4.22.156
yasya bhāgyavataścātra tiṣṭhaṃtyasthīnyapi dvija ..
And for whatever fortunate person even the bones remain here, O brahmin,
4.22.157
na tasya duḥkhaleśopi kvāpi janmani jāyate .. 77 ..
not even the slightest sorrow arises for him in any birth whatsoever.
4.22.158
brahmahatyādi pāpānāṃ prāyaścittaṃ cikīrṣuṇā ..
One who desires to make expiation for the sin of killing a brahmin and other sins
4.22.159
prayāgaṃ vidhivatsevyaṃ dvijavākyānna saṃśayaḥ .. 78 ..
must resort to Prayāga according to rule; [this is certain] from the word of the brahmins—there is no doubt.
4.22.160
kiṃ bahūktena vipreṃdra mahodayamabhīpsunā ..
Why say much, O best of brahmins? By one desiring great prosperity
4.22.161
sevyaṃ sitāsitaṃ tīrthaṃ prakṛṣṭaṃ jagatītale .. 79 ..
the black-and-white sacred ford, supreme on the surface of the earth, should be resorted to.
4.22.162
prayāgatopi tīrtheśātsarveṣu bhuvaneṣvapi ..
Even compared to Prayāga, the lord of sacred fords in all the worlds,
4.22.163
anāyāsena vai muktiḥ kāśyāṃ dehāvasānataḥ ..4.1.22.80..
liberation indeed comes effortlessly in Kāśī upon the demise of the body.
4.22.164
prayāgādapi vai ramyamavimuktaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ..
Even compared to Prayāga, Avimukta is delightful indeed, there is no doubt,
4.22.165
yatra viśveśvaraḥ sākṣātsvayaṃ samadhitiṣṭhati .. 81 ..
where Viśveśvara himself directly presides.
4.22.166
avimuktānmahākṣetrādviśveśa samadhiṣṭhitāt ..
Than Avimukta, the great sacred field presided over by Viśveśa,
4.22.167
na ca kiṃcitkvacidramyamiha brahmāṃḍagolake .. 82 ..
nothing anywhere in this cosmic egg is more delightful.
4.22.168
avimuktamidaṃ kṣetramapi brahmāṃḍamadhyagam ..
Although this sacred field of Avimukta is within the cosmic egg,
4.22.169
brahmāṃḍamadhye na bhavetpaṃcakrośapramāṇataḥ .. 83 ..
by its measure of five krośas it is not within the cosmic egg.
4.22.170
yathāyathā hi vardheta jalamekārṇavasya ca ..
For just as the water of the single ocean rises,
4.22.171
tathātathonnayedīśastatkṣetraṃ pralayādapi .. 84 ..
so the Lord lifts up that sacred field even from the cosmic dissolution.
4.22.172
kṣetrametattriśūlāgre śūlinastiṣṭhati dvija ..
O brahmin, this sacred field rests on the tip of the trident of the Trident-bearer;
4.22.173
aṃtarikṣena bhūmiṣṭhaṃ nekṣaṃte mūḍhabuddhayaḥ.. 85 ..
[it is] in the sky, not resting on the earth—those of foolish intellect do not see it.
4.22.174
sadā kṛtayugaṃ cātra mahāparvasadā'tra vai ..
Here it is always the Kṛtayuga, and here indeed it is always a great auspicious festival;
4.22.175
na grahā'stodayakṛto doṣo viśveśvarāśrame ..86..
there is no fault caused by the setting or rising of planets in the hermitage of Viśveśvara.
4.22.176
sadā saumyāyanaṃ tatra sadā tatra mahodayaḥ ..
There it is always the northern course [of the sun]; there it is always the great auspicious conjunction;
4.22.177
sadaiva maṃgalaṃ tatra yatra viśveśvarasthitiḥ..87..
there it is always auspicious where Viśveśvara abides.
4.22.178
yathābhūmitale vipra puryaḥ saṃti sahasraśaḥ ..
Just as there are thousands of cities upon the earth's surface, O brahmin,
4.22.179
tathā kāśī na maṃtavyā kvāpi lokottarātviyam .. 88 ..
so Kāśī should not be thought [to be an ordinary one], for this [city] is transcendent anywhere.
4.22.180
mayā sṛṣṭāni vipreṃdra bhuvanāni caturdaśa ..
The fourteen worlds were created by me, O best of brahmins;
4.22.181
asyāḥ puryā vinirmātā svayaṃ viśveśvaraḥ prabhuḥ .. 89 ..
the creator of this city is the Lord Viśveśvara himself.
4.22.182
purā yamastapastaptvā bahukālaṃ suduṣkaram ..
Anciently, Yama, having performed difficult austerity for a long time,
4.22.183
trailokyādhikṛtiṃ prāptastyaktvā vārāṇasīṃ purīm .. 4.1.22.90 ..
obtained authority over the three worlds, leaving aside the city of Vārāṇasī.
4.22.184
carācarasya sarvasya yāni karmāṇi tāni vai ..
Whatever the deeds of all moving and unmoving beings are,
4.22.185
gocare citraguptasya kāśīvāsikṛtādṛte .. 91 ..
they indeed fall within the range of Citragupta, except those done by an inhabitant of Kāśī.
4.22.186
praveśo yamadūtānāṃ na kadāciddvijottama ..
O best of brahmins, the entry of Yama's messengers
4.22.187
madhye kāśīpurī kvāpi rakṣiṇastatra tadgaṇāḥ .. 92 ..
into the midst of Kāśī city is never [permitted] anywhere; his attendants are its protectors there.
4.22.188
svayaṃ niyaṃtā viśveśastatra kāśyāṃ tanutyajām ..
Viśveśa himself is the punisher of those who abandon the body there in Kāśī;
4.22.189
tatrāpi kṛtapāpānāṃ niyaṃtā kālabhairavaḥ .. 93 ..
and of those who commit sins even there, Kālabhairava is the punisher.
4.22.190
tatra pāpaṃ na kartavyaṃ dāruṇā rudrayātanā ..
One should not commit a sin there; the torment of Rudra is terrible!
4.22.191
aho rudrapiśācatvaṃ narakebhyopi duḥsaham .. 94 ..
Ah, the state of being a goblin of Rudra is more unbearable than the hells!
4.22.192
pāpameva hi kartavyaṃ matirasti yadīdṛśī ..
If such is one's mind that 'Only sin is to be committed,'
4.22.193
sukhenānyatra kartavyaṃ mahī hyasti mahīyasī .. 95 ..
then it should be committed elsewhere at ease, for the earth is vast indeed.
4.22.194
api kāmāturo jaṃturekāṃ rakṣati mātaram ..
Even a lust-stricken creature protects his one mother;
4.22.195
api pāpakṛtā kāśī rakṣyā mokṣārthinaikikā .. 96 ..
even by a sinner, Kāśī alone should be spared by one desiring liberation.
4.22.196
parāpavādaśīlena paradārābhilāṣiṇā ..
By one given to slandering others, by one lusting after another's wife—
4.22.197
tena kāśī na saṃsevyā kva kāśī nirayaḥ kva saḥ .. 97 ..
by him Kāśī is not to be frequented: where is Kāśī, and where is that hell?
4.22.198
abhilaṣyaṃti ye nityaṃ dhanaṃ cātra pratigrahaiḥ ..
Those who constantly crave wealth here through unlawful acceptance,
4.22.199
parasvaṃ kapaṭairvāpi kāśī sevyā na tairnaraiḥ .. 98 ..
or another's property through deceptions—by those men Kāśī is not to be frequented.
4.22.200
parapīḍākaraṃ karma kāśyāṃ nityaṃ vivarjayet ..
One should constantly avoid in Kāśī any action that inflicts harm upon others;
