destroying all diseases in the northern region of Triviṣṭapa. // 2

yathā khakholka ityākhyā tasyādityasya tacchṛṇu ..
Listen to that [story] of how the name of that Āditya came to be Khakholka.
4.50.7

Long ago, Kadrū and Vinatā, the two auspicious daughters of Dakṣa, // 3

kaśyapasya ca te patnyau mārīceḥ prākprajāpateḥ ..
were the two wives of Prajāpati Kaśyapa, the son of Marīci.
4.50.9
krīḍaṃtyāvekadānyonyaṃ mune te ūcatustviti .. 4 ..
Once while playing together, O sage, they spoke to one another in this way: // 4
4.50.10
.. kadrūruvāca .. ..
Kadrū said:
4.50.11
vinate tvaṃ vijānāsi yadi tadbrūhi megrataḥ..
'O Vinatā, if you know, then declare it before me;
4.50.12
akhaṃḍitā gatistesti yato gaganamaṃḍale .. 5 ..
for your course is unimpeded in the circle of the heavens. // 5
4.50.13
yosāvuccaiḥśravā vājī śrūyate savitūrathe ..
That horse Uccaiḥśravas who is heard of in the chariot of the Sun—
4.50.14
kiṃ rūpaḥsosti śabalo dhavalo vā vadāśu me .. 6 ..
what is his color? Is he dappled or white? Tell me quickly! // 6
4.50.15
paṇaṃ ca kuru kalyāṇi tubhyaṃ yo rocatenaghe ..
And make a wager, O auspicious one, whichever pleases you, O sinless woman;
4.50.16
evameva na yātyeṣa kālakrīḍanakaṃ vinā ..7..
for this time does not pass pleasantly without some play!' // 7
4.50.17
.. vinatovāca .. ..
Vinatā said:
4.50.18
kiṃ paṇena bhaginyatra kathayāmyevameva hi ..
'What is the use of a wager here, sister? I will tell you straightforwardly indeed;
4.50.19
tvajjaye kā ca me prītirmajjaye kiṃ nu te sukham .. 8 ..
what pleasure would I have in your defeat, or what happiness could you have in mine? // 8
4.50.20
jñātvā paṇo na kartavyo mithaḥ snehamabhīpsatā ..
Knowing this, one who desires mutual affection should not make a wager;
4.50.21
dhruvamekasya vijaye krodhonsyeha jāyate ..9..
upon the victory of the one, anger certainly arises in the other here.' // 9
4.50.22
kadrūruvāca ..
Kadrū said:
4.50.23
krīḍeyaṃ nātra bhagini kāraṇaṃ kimapi krudhaḥ ..
'This is just play, sister; there is no cause for anger here;
4.50.24
khelasya vyavahāroyaṃ paṇe yatkiṃciducyate .. 4.1.50.10 ..
this is the convention of a game: whatever is spoken is in the wager.' // 10
4.50.25
.. vinatovāca .. ..
Vinatā said:
4.50.26
tathā kuru yathā prītistavāsti pavanāśini ..
'Do so in whatever way brings you pleasure, O snake!'
4.50.27
atha tāṃ vinatāmāha kadrūḥ kuṭilamānasā .. 11 ..
Then Kadrū of crooked mind said to that Vinatā: // 11
4.50.28
tasyāstu sā bhaveddāsī parājīyeta yā yayā ..
'Whichever woman is defeated by the other shall become her slave;
4.50.29
asminpaṇe imāḥ sarvāḥ sakhyaḥ sākṣiṇya eva nau .. 12 ..
in this wager, all these friends of ours are the only witnesses.' // 12
4.50.30
ityanyonyaṃ paṇīkṛtya sarpiṇyapi patattriṇī ..
Having thus made a mutual wager, the serpent woman and the bird woman—
4.50.31
uvāca karburaṃ kadrūraśvaṃ śvetaṃ garutmatī .. 13 ..
Kadrū declared the horse to be dappled, while Garutmatī [declared him] white. // 13
4.50.32
kadāgaṃtavyamiti ca cakrāte te gamāvadhim ..
And deciding when they should go, they fixed the limit of their journey;
4.50.33
jagmatuśca viramyātha krīḍanātsvasvamālayam .. 14 ..
and ceasing then from playing, they each went to their respective abode. // 14
4.50.34
vinatāyāṃ gatāyāṃ tu kadrūrāhūya cāṃgajān ..
When Vinatā had gone, Kadrū summoned her sons
4.50.35
uvāca yāta vai putrā drutaṃ vacanato mama .. 15..
and said: 'Go quickly, my sons, at my word! // 15
4.50.36
turaṃgamuccaiḥśravasaṃ prodbhūtaṃ kṣīranīradheḥ ..
To the horse Uccaiḥśravas, who emerged from the milk-ocean
4.50.37
surāsurairmathyamānānmaṃdarāghātasādhvasāt .. 16 ..
as it was being churned by the gods and asuras, out of fright at the impacts of Mandara, // 16
4.50.38
kāryakāraṇarūpasya sādṛśyamadhigacchati ..
which attains likeness to the form of cause and effect...'
4.50.39
atastaṃ kṣīravarṇābhaṃ kalmāṣayata putrakāḥ .. 17 ..
Therefore, my sons, spot that horse whose radiance has the color of milk.
4.50.40
tasya vāladhimadhyāsya kṛṣṇakuṃtalatāṃ gatāḥ ..
Fasten yourselves upon his tail and assume the form of black locks of hair;
4.50.41
tathā tadaṃgalomāni vidhattaviṣasītkṛtaiḥ .. 18 ..
likewise, make the hairs of his body dark with the hissing of your venom."
4.50.42
iti śrutvā vaco mātuḥ kādraveyāḥ parasparam ..
Hearing these words of their mother, the sons of Kadrū, having conferred
4.50.43
saṃmaṃtrya mātaraṃ procuḥ kadrūṃ kadrūpamāgatāḥ .. 19 ..
with one another, approached their mother Kadrū and said:
4.50.44
.. nāgā ūcuḥ .. ..
The serpents said:
4.50.45
mātarvayaṃ tvadāhvānādvihāya krīḍanaṃ balāt ..
"O Mother, at your call we forcibly left our play
4.50.46
prāptāḥ prahṛṣṭā mṛṣṭānnaṃ dāsyatyadya prasūriti .. 4.1.50.20 ..
and came here, delighted, thinking, 'Our mother will give us sweet food today.'
4.50.47
mṛṣṭaṃ tiṣṭhatu taddūraṃ viṣādapyadhikaṃ kaṭu ..
Let sweet food remain far away! This is more bitter than poison,
4.50.48
tattvayā vādiyanmaṃtrairauṣadhairnopaśāmyati .. 21 ..
for it is a dispute raised by you that cannot be pacified by mantras or medicines.
4.50.49
vayaṃ na yāmo yadbhāvyaṃ tadasmākaṃ bhavatviha ..
We will not go; let happen here to us whatever is destined to be!"
4.50.50
iti proktaṃ viṣāsyaistaistadā kuṭilagāmibhiḥ .. 22 ..
Thus it was spoken then by those crooked-moving serpents with mouths of venom.
4.50.51
.. skaṃda uvāca .. ..
Skanda said:
4.50.52
anyepi ye kuṭilagāḥ pararaṃdhraniṣeviṇaḥ ..
Others also who go crookedly, who exploit the faults of others,
4.50.53
akarṇāḥ kūrahṛdayāḥ pitarau vrīḍayaṃti te .. 23 ..
who lack ears [to listen], and are cruel-hearted, bring shame upon their parents.
4.50.54
pitrorgiraṃ nirākṛtya ye tiṣṭheyuḥ sudurmadāḥ ..
Those who, excessively arrogant, remain defiant of their parents' word,
4.50.55
atyāhitamiha prāpya gaccheyuste'cirāllayam .. 24 ..
will meet with great disaster in this world and soon go to ruin.
4.50.56
teṣāṃ vacanamākarṇya nayāma iti soragī ..
Hearing their words, saying 'We will not go', that mother of serpents,
4.50.57
śaśāpa tānkrudhāviṣṭā nāgāṃścāgaḥ samāgatān .. 25 ..
overcome with anger, cursed the serpents who had gathered there in fault:
4.50.58
tārkṣyasya bhakṣyā bhavata yūyaṃ madvākyalaṃghanāt ..
"Because of disobeying my command, become food for Garuḍa!
4.50.59
jātamātrāśca sarpiṇyo bhakṣayaṃtu svabālakān .. 26 ..
And may female serpents devour their own children as soon as they are born!"
4.50.60
iti śāpānalādbhītaiḥ kaiścitpātālamāśritam ..
Terrified by the fire of this curse, some took refuge in Pātāla,
4.50.61
jijīviṣubhiranyaiśca dvitraiścakre prasūvacaḥ .. 27 ..
while two or three others, wishing to live, carried out their mother's word.
4.50.62
te pucchamauccaiḥśravasamadhigamya mahādhiyaḥ ..
Those wise ones, having reached the tail of Uccaiḥśravas,
4.50.63
sunīlacikurābhāsaṃ cakruraṃgaṃ ca karburam .. 28 ..
made it resemble dark blue hair and his body variegated,
4.50.64
tatkṣveḍānala dhūmaughaiḥ phūtkārabharaniḥsṛtaiḥ..
with streams of smoke from the fire of their venom emitted by the force of their hissing;
4.50.65
mātṛvākkṛtijāddharmānna dagdhā bhānubhānubhiḥ .. 29 ..
and through the merit born of performing their mother's command, they were not scorched by the rays of the sun.
4.50.66
vinatāpṛṣṭhamāruhya kadrūḥ snehavaśāttataḥ ..
Then Kadrū, having mounted the back of Vinatā out of affection,
4.50.67
viyanmārgamalaṃkṛtya dadarśoṣṇāṃśumaṃḍalam .. 4.1.50.30 ..
graced the path of the sky and beheld the orb of the hot-rayed [sun].
4.50.68
tigmaraśmiprabhāveṇa vyākulībhūtamānasā ..
With her mind bewildered by the power of the fierce-rayed [sun],
4.50.69
kadrustataḥ khagīṃ prāha visrabdhaṃ vinate vraja .. 31 ..
Kadrū then said to the female bird, "O Vinatā, fly steadily!
4.50.70
uṣṇagoruṣṇagobhirme tāpyate nitarāṃ tanuḥ ..
My body is excessively scorched by the hot rays of the hot-rayed one.
4.50.71
visrabdhāhaṃ svabhāvena tvaṃ sāpekṣāhi sarvataḥ .. .. 32 ..
I am trusting by nature, whereas you are indeed calculating in every way.
4.50.72
svarūpeṇa pataṃgī tvaṃ pataṃgosau sahasraguḥ ..
In form you are a winged bird (pataṅgī), and he of a thousand rays is the sun (pataṅga);
4.50.73
ataeva na te bādhā gagane tāpasaṃbhavā .. 33 ..
therefore you have no distress arising from heat in the sky.
4.50.74
viyatsarasi haṃsoyaṃ bhavatī haṃsagāminī ..
He is the swan (haṃsa) in the lake of the sky, and you walk like a swan (haṃsagāminī);
4.50.75
caṃḍaraśmipratāpāgnistvāmato neha bādhate .. 34 ..
therefore the burning fire of the fierce-rayed one does not torment you here."
4.50.76
khagīmudgīyamānāṃ khe punarūce bileśayā ..
To the female bird soaring in the sky, that hole-dwelling [serpent] spoke again:
4.50.77
trāhitrāhi bhaginyatra yāvonyatra viyatpathaḥ .. 35 ..
"Save me, save me, sister, here! Let us go elsewhere from the path of the sky!
4.50.78
vinate vinatāṃ māṃ tvaṃ kiṃ nāvasi patattriṇī ..
O Vinatā, will you, a bird, not protect me who am bowed (vinatā) [before you]?
4.50.79
tava dāsī bhaviṣyāmi tvaducchiṣṭaniṣeviṇī ..36 ..
I will become your servant, eating your leftover food;
4.50.80
yāvajjīvamahaṃ bhūyāṃ tvatpādodakapāyinī ..
as long as I live, I shall drink the washings of your feet!"
4.50.81
khakholkāni patedeṣā bhṛśagadgadabhāṣiṇī .... 37 ..
Speaking with intense stammering, she said, "Khakholkāni patet!"
4.50.82
mūrcchāṃ gatavatī pakṣapuṭau dhṛtvā biḍoragī..
Holding fast to the pinions of her wings, the female serpent fainted away.
4.50.83
sakhyulkāni patedeṣā vaktavye tviti saṃbhramāt .. 38 ..
For in her agitation, when she should have said "sakhyulkāni patet",
4.50.84
khakholketi yaduktā gīḥ kadrvā saṃbhrātacetasā ..
that word "Khakholka" was uttered by Kadrū with a bewildered mind;
4.50.85
tadā khakholkanāmārkaḥ stuto vinatayā bahu .. 39 ..
then the sun named Khakholka was greatly praised by Vinatā.
4.50.86
manāgatigmatāṃ prāpte khe prayāti vivasvati ..
When the sun moving in the sky had attained a slightly lesser heat,
4.50.87
tābhyāṃ turaṃgamo darśi kiṃcitkirmīravānrathe .. 4.1.50.40 ..
the horse in the chariot was seen by the two of them as slightly spotted.
4.50.88
uktā vinatayaivaiṣā tāpopahatalocanā ..
Then that cruel female serpent, whose eyes were damaged by the heat,
4.50.89
krūrā sarīsṛpī satyavādinyā viśvamānyayā .. 41 ..
was addressed by Vinatā, the speaker of truth, revered by the world:
4.50.90
kadru tvayā jitaṃ bhadre yata uccaiḥśravā hayaḥ ..
"O Kadrū, gentle lady, you have won! For the horse Uccaiḥśravas,
4.50.91
caṃdraraśmiprabhopyeṣa kalmāṣa iva bhāsate .. 42 ..
even though he has the luster of the moon's rays, appears as if spotted.
4.50.92
vidhirbalīyānbhujagi citraṃ jayaparājaye ..
Fate is all-powerful, O serpent; wonderful it is in victory and defeat!
4.50.93
krūropi vijayī kvāpi tvakrūropi parājayī .. 43 ..
Even a cruel one may sometimes be victorious, and even an un-cruel one defeated."
4.50.94
vinatāvinatādhārā vadaṃtīti yathāgatam ..
Speaking thus, Vinatā, who had bowed her head [in defeat], returned just as she had come
4.50.95
kadrūniveśanaṃ prāptā tasyā dāsyamacīkarat ..44..
to the dwelling of Kadrū, and rendered servitude to her.
4.50.96
kadācidvinatādarśi suparṇanāśrulocanā ..
Once, Vinatā was seen by Suparṇa with tearful eyes,
4.50.97
vicchāyā malinā dīnā dīrghaniḥśvāsavatyapi .. .. 45 ..
lusterless, soiled, wretched, and sighing deeply.
4.50.98
suparṇa uvāca .. ..
Suparṇa said:
4.50.99
prātaḥprātaraho mātaḥ kva yāsi tvaṃ dinedine ..
"O mother, where do you go early every morning, day after day?
4.50.100
sāyamāyāsi ca kuto vicchāyā dīnamānasā .. 46 ..
And whence do you return in the evening, pale and dejected in mind? // 46
4.50.101
kuto niḥśvasisi proccairaśrupūrṇa vilocanā ..
Why do you sigh aloud, your eyes filled with tears,
4.50.102
yathā klībasutā yoṣidyathāpati tiraskṛtā ..47..
like a woman whose son is impotent, or like one despised by her husband? // 47
4.50.103
brūhi mātarjhaṭityadya kuto dūnāsi pattriṇi ..
Tell me quickly today, mother bird: why are you distressed,
4.50.104
mayi jīvati te bāle kālepi kṛtasādhvase.. .. 48 ..
while I, your son, am alive—I who strike terror into Death himself? // 48
4.50.105
aśrunirmāṇakaraṇe kāraṇaṃ kiṃ tapasvini ..
What is the reason for producing these tears, poor woman?
4.50.106
sucaritrā sunārīṣu nāmaṃgalamiheṣyate .. 49 ..
No misfortune should befall one of good conduct among virtuous women! // 49
4.50.107
dhiktāṃśca putrānyanmātā teṣu jīvatsu duḥkhabhāk ..
Shame on those sons whose mother suffers sorrow while they live!
4.50.108
varaṃ vaṃdhyaiva sā yasyāḥ sutā vaṃdhyamanorathāḥ ..4.1.50.50 ..
Better is she who is barren than one whose sons have barren ambitions." // 50
4.50.109
ityūrjasvalamākarṇya vacaḥ sūnorgarutmataḥ ..
Having heard these spirited words of her son Garuḍa,
4.50.110
vinatā prāha taṃ putraṃ mātṛbhaktisamanvitam .. 51 ..
Vinatā spoke to that son endowed with devotion to his mother: // 51
4.50.111
ahaṃ dāsyasmi re bāla kadrvāśca krūracetasaḥ ..
"O child, I am a slave to the cruel-minded Kadrū.
4.50.112
pṛṣṭhe vahāmi tāṃ nityaṃ tatputrānapi putraka..52..
I constantly carry her on my back, and her sons as well, my dear son. // 52
4.50.113
kadācinmaṃdaraṃ yāmi kadācinmalayācalam ..
Sometimes I go to Mount Mandara, sometimes to Mount Malaya,
4.50.114
kadācidaṃtarīpeṣu careyaṃ tadudanvatām .. .. 53 ..
and sometimes I wander among the islands of those oceans. // 53
4.50.115
yatrayatra nayeyuste kādraveyāḥ sudurmadāḥ ..
Wherever those arrogant sons of Kadrū lead,
4.50.116
vrajeyaṃ tatratatrāhaṃ tadadhīnā yataḥ suta .. 54..
there I must go, since I am in their power, my son." // 54
4.50.117
garuḍa uvāca .. ..
Garuḍa said:
4.50.118
dāsītvakāraṇaṃ mātaḥ kiṃ te jātaṃ sulakṣaṇe ..
"What caused your enslavement, O auspicious mother,
4.50.119
dakṣaprajāpateḥ putri kaśyapasyapriye'naghe .. 55 ..
daughter of Dakṣa Prajāpati, beloved of Kaśyapa, sinless one?" // 55
4.50.120
vinatovāca garuḍaṃ purāvṛttamaśeṣataḥ ..
Vinatā related the past event to Garuḍa in its entirety:
4.50.121
dāsītvakāraṇaṃ yadvadādityāśvavilokanam .. 56 ..
the cause of her enslavement, which was the sight of the Sun's horse. // 56
4.50.122
śrutveti garuḍaḥ prāha mātaraṃ satvaraṃ vraja..
Hearing this, Garuḍa said to his mother: "Go quickly;
4.50.123
pṛcchādya mātastānduṣṭānkādraveyānidaṃ vacaḥ ..57..
ask those wicked sons of Kadrū this today, mother: // 57
4.50.124
yaddurlabhaṃ hi bhavatāṃ yatrātyaṃtaruciśca vaḥ ..
'Whatever is difficult for you to attain, and in which you have supreme pleasure—
4.50.125
maddāsītvavimokṣāya tadyācadhvaṃ dadāmyaham.. .. 58 ..
demand that for release from my servitude, and I shall give it.'" // 58
4.50.126
tathākarocca vinatā tepi śrutvā tadīritam ..
Vinatā did so, and having heard what she said,
4.50.127
sarpāḥ saṃmaṃtrya tāṃ procurvinatāṃ hṛṣṭamānasāḥ .. 59 ..
those serpents took counsel and, delighted in mind, said to Vinatā: // 59
4.50.128
mātṛśāpavimokṣāya yadi dāsyati naḥ sudhām ..
"If he gives us the nectar of immortality to free you from our mother's curse,
4.50.129
tadā samīhitaṃ testu na dāsyatyatha dāsyasi .. 4.1.50.60 ..
then what you desire will be yours; if he does not give it, you will remain a slave." // 60
4.50.130
ityoṃkṛtya samāpṛcchya kadrūṃ drutagatiḥ khagī ..
Saying 'So be it' and taking leave of Kadrū, the swift-flying female bird
4.50.131
garutmaṃtaṃ samācaṣṭa dṛṣṭvā saṃhṛṣṭamānasam .. 61 ..
reported this to Garuḍa, seeing his mind overjoyed. // 61
4.50.132
nāgāṃtakastataḥ prāha mātaraṃ ciṃtayāturām ..
Then the slayer of serpents spoke to his mother, who was afflicted with worry:
4.50.133
ānītaṃ viddhi pīyūṣaṃ mātarme dehi bhojanam.. 62 ..
"Consider the nectar brought, mother! Give me food." // 62
4.50.134
vinatā prāha taṃ putraṃ saṃprahṛṣṭatanūruhā ..
Vinatā spoke to that son, the hairs on her body standing on end with delight:
4.50.135
bhoḥ suparṇārṇavaṃ tūrṇaṃ yāhi maṃgalamastu te .. 63 ..
"O Garuḍa, go quickly to the ocean; may good fortune be yours! // 63
4.50.136
saṃti tatrāpi bahuśo niṣādā matsyaghātinaḥ ..
There are many Niṣādas there, slayers of fish,
4.50.137
velātaṭanivāsāśca tānbhakṣaya durātmanaḥ .. 64 ..
living on the sea coast; eat those evil-minded ones! // 64
4.50.138
paraprāṇairnijaprāṇānye puṣṇaṃtīha durdhiyaḥ ..
Those wicked people who sustain their own lives with the lives of others
4.50.139
śāsanīyāḥ prayatnena śreyastacchāsanaṃ param .. 65 ..
must be punished with effort; punishing them is the highest good. // 65
4.50.140
bahuhiṃsākṛtāṃ hiṃsā bhavetsvargasya sādhanam ..
Harm done to those who commit much violence becomes a means to heaven,
4.50.141
vihiṃsiteṣu duṣṭeṣu rakṣyate bhūriśo yataḥ ..66..
for when the wicked are destroyed, many are protected. // 66
4.50.142

Yet if there should be any brahmin among the Niṣādas, my son,
4.50.143
saṃrakṣaṇīyo yatnena bhakṣaṇīyo na karhicit .. 67 ..
he must be zealously protected and never eaten." // 67
4.50.144

Garuḍa said:

4.50.154
madhye sadā niṣādānāṃ yo vasejjanani dvijaḥ ..
"O mother, for a twice-born who lives constantly among the Niṣādas,
4.50.155
tasyaiteṣvekamapyeva na manye lakṣmabodhakam .. 72 ..
I do not think even one of these serves as a recognizable mark. // 72
4.50.156
lakṣmāṃtaraṃ samācakṣva dvijabodhakaraṃ prasūḥ ..
Tell me another mark, mother, that makes a twice-born known,
4.50.157
yena vijñāya taṃ vipraṃ tyajeyamapi kaṃṭhagam .. 73 ..
by which, recognizing that brahmin, I may release him even if he has entered my throat." // 73
4.50.158
tacchrutvā vinatā prāha yaste kaṃṭhagatoṃ'gaja ..
Hearing that, Vinatā said: "O son, he who has entered your throat
4.50.159
khadirāṃgāravaddahyāttamapākuru dūrataḥ .. 74 ..
[The one who] burns like glowing embers of khadira wood when he reaches your throat—cast him far away.
4.50.160
dvijamātrepi yā hiṃsā sā hiṃsā kuśalāya na ..
Even against a mere twice-born, whatever violence is done does not lead to good;
4.50.161
deśaṃ vaṃśaṃ śriyaṃ svaṃ ca nirmūlayati kālataḥ .. 75 ..
in the course of time it uproots country, lineage, fortune, and self-wealth.
4.50.162
niśamya kāśyapiritiprasūpādaupraṇamya ca ..
Having heard this, Garuḍa, son of Kaśyapa, bowed down before his mother's feet;
4.50.163
gṛhītāśīryayau śīghraṃ khamārgeṇa khageśvaraḥ ..76..
and, having received her blessing, the lord of birds swiftly set out along the path of the sky.
4.50.164
dūrādālokayāṃcakre niṣādānmatsyajīvinaḥ ..
From afar he caught sight of the Niṣādas who live by catching fish.
4.50.165
pakṣau vidhūya pakṣīṃdro rajasāpūrya rodasī .. 77 ..
Flapping his wings, the king of birds filled heaven and earth with dust;
4.50.166
aṃdhīkṛtya diśobhāgānabdhirodhasyupāviśat ..
blinding the quarters of space, he settled down on the shore of the ocean.
4.50.167
vyādāya vadanaṃ ghoraṃ mahākaṃdarasannibham .. 78 ..
He opened wide his terrifying mouth, which resembled a great cavern;
4.50.168
kāṃdiśīkā niṣādāstu viviśustatra ca svayam ..
and the Niṣādas, fleeing in all directions, entered it of their own accord.
4.50.169
manvāneṣvatha paṃthānaṃ teṣu kaṃṭhaṃ viśatsvapi ..79 ..
While they entered his throat, thinking it was a path,
4.50.170
jajvāleṃgalasaṃsparśo dvijastatkaṃṭhakaṃdalīm ..
a twice-born, feeling like hot embers to the touch, burned the cavity of his throat.
4.50.171
prākpraviṣṭānatho tārkṣyo niṣādānaudarīṃ darīm .. 4.1.50.80 ..
Having sent the Niṣādas, who had previously entered, into the cavern of his stomach,
4.50.172
praveśya kaṃṭhatālusthaṃ taṃ vijñāya dvijasphuṭam ..
Garuḍa realized clearly that the one lodged between his throat and palate was a twice-born;
4.50.173
bhayādudagirattūrṇaṃ mātṛvākyena yaṃtritaḥ .. 81 ..
restrained by his mother's words, he quickly vomited him out in fear.
4.50.174
tamudgīrṇaṃ naraṃ dṛṣṭvā pakṣirāṭsamabhāṣata ..
Seeing that man who had been cast up, the king of birds addressed him:
4.50.175
kastvaṃ jātyāsi nigada mama kaṃṭhavidāhakṛt .. 82 ..
"Speak: who are you by caste, you who have caused such burning in my throat?"
4.50.176
sa tadāheti viprohaṃ pṛṣṭaḥ sangaruḍāgrataḥ ..
Questioned thus before Garuḍa, he said: "I am a brahmin;
4.50.177
vasāmyeṣu niṣādeṣu jātimātropajīvakaḥ .. 83 ..
I dwell among these Niṣādas, living solely by the status of my caste."
4.50.178
taṃ preṣya garuḍo dūraṃ bhakṣayitvātha bhūriśaḥ ..
Having sent him far away, Garuḍa devoured [the rest] in great numbers;
4.50.179
nabho vikṣobhayāṃcakre pralayānila sannibhaḥ .. 84 ..
and like the wind of cosmic dissolution, he agitated the sky.
4.50.180
taṃ dṛṣṭvā tigmatejaskaṃ jvālātatadigaṃtaram ..
Seeing him blazing with fierce radiance, filling the horizon with flames,
4.50.181
jvaladdāvānalaṃ śailamiva bibhyurdivaukasaḥ .. .. 85 ..
like a mountain ablaze with forest fire, the sky-dwellers were terrified.
4.50.182
te sannahyaṃta yuddhāya sajjīkṛta balāyudhāḥ ..
Arming themselves for battle, their armies and weapons made ready,
4.50.183
adhyāsya vāhanānyāśu sarve varmabhṛtaḥ surāḥ .. 86 ..
swiftly mounting their vehicles, all the gods put on their armor:
4.50.184
tiryaggatīravirnāyaṃ nāyamagniḥ sadhūmavān ..
"This is not the sun moving horizontally across the sky, nor is this fire accompanied by smoke;
4.50.185
kṣaṇaprabhāpyasau naiva ko naḥ sammukha etyasau .. 87 ..
nor is this a flash of lightning. Who is this who advances against us?
4.50.186
na daityeṣu prabhedṛksyānnākṛtirdānaveṣviyam..
Such splendour cannot belong to the Daityas, nor is this form seen among the Dānavas.
4.50.187
mahāsādhvasadaḥ koyamasmākaṃ hṛtprakaṃpanaḥ .. 88 ..
Who is this great bringer of terror, making our hearts tremble?"
4.50.188
yāvatsaṃbhāvayaṃtīti nītijñā api nirjarāḥ ..
While the immortal gods, knowledgeable in statecraft, were still pondering thus,
4.50.189
tāvaddudhāva svau pakṣau pakṣirājo mahābalaḥ .. 89 ..
the mighty king of birds flapped his two wings.
4.50.190
nipetuḥ pakṣavātena sāyudhāśca savāhanāḥ ..
By the blast of his wings, they fell along with their weapons and their vehicles;
4.50.191
na jñāyaṃte kva saṃprāptā vātyayā pārṇatārṇavat .. 4.1.50.90 ..
like dry leaves caught in a whirlwind, it was not known where they had gone.
4.50.192
atha teṣu praṇaṣṭeṣu buddhyā vijñāya pakṣirāṭ ..
Then, once they had vanished, the king of birds perceived by his intellect
4.50.193
kośāgāraṃ sudhāyāḥ sa tatrāpaśyacca rakṣiṇaḥ .. 91 ..
the treasury of nectar, and there he saw its guardians.
4.50.194
śastrāstrodyatapāṇīṃstānsurānādhūya sarvaśaḥ ..
Having brushed aside in every direction those gods whose hands were raised with weapons and missiles,
4.50.195
dadarśa kartarīyaṃtramamṛtoparisaṃsthitam .. 92 ..
he saw a shearing mechanism placed above the nectar,
4.50.196
manaḥpavanavegena bhramamāṇaṃ mahārayam ..
whirling with immense velocity at the speed of the mind and the wind,
4.50.197
apispṛśaṃtaṃ maśakaṃ yatkhaṃḍayati koṭiśaḥ .. 93 ..
which would cut into millions of pieces even a mosquito that merely touched it.
4.50.198
upopaviśya pakṣīṃdrastasya yaṃtrasya nirbhayaḥ ..
Sitting down near that machine, fearless, the lord of birds
4.50.199
kṣaṇaṃ vicārayāmāsa kimatra karavāṇyaho .. 94 ..
reflected for a moment: "Alas, what shall I do here?
4.50.200
spraṣṭuṃ na labhyate caitadvātyā na prabhavediha ..
It is not possible to touch this, nor can a blast of wind prevail here.
