Mahodara too, devoted to meditation on Śiva to the east of it,
4.53.73
mahodareśvaraṃ liṃgaṃ dhyāyedadyāpi kuṃbhaja .. 35 ..
would meditate even today upon the liṅga Mahodareśvara, O pot-born [Agastya]! .. 35 ..

may someone be born in our lineage who is a giver of even sesamum-water!” .. 4.2.53.40 ..

mahāmohanavidyāsi kāśi tvāṃ paryavaimyaham .. 43 ..
“O Kāśī, you are the lore of great delusion; I fully comprehend you. .. 43 ..
4.53.91
purāvidaḥ praśaṃsaṃti tvāṃ mahāmohahāriṇīm ..
Those who know the ancient lore praise you as dispelling great delusion;
4.53.92
kāśīṃtviti na jānaṃti mahāmohanabhūriyam .. 44 ..
they do not know Kāśī thus: this is the land of great delusion! .. 44 ..
4.53.93
preṣayiṣyāmyahaṃ sarvānbhavatī mohayiṣyati ..
I will send everyone; you will delude them.
4.53.94
iti samyagvijānāmi kāśi tvāṃ mohanoṣadhim .. 49 ..
Thus I know well, O Kāśī, that you are an herb of delusion. .. 45 ..
4.53.95
tathāpi preṣayiṣyāmi yāvānmesti paricchadaḥ ..
Even so, I will send as much retinue as I have;

4.53.99
śītoṣṇabhānū svarbhānu grastāvapi nabhoṃgaṇe ..
The cool-rayed [moon] and the hot-rayed [sun], though seized by Svarbhānu in the courtyard of the sky,

even today do not abandon their course, exerting their effort to advance. .. 48 ..
4.53.101
ekatra haṃti kāryāṇi prātikūlyādvidhirmuhuḥ ..
On the one hand, fate repeatedly destroys undertakings through adversity;
4.53.102
ekatrakaraṇīyāni setsyaṃtyatra bhṛśodyamāt .. 49 ..
on the other hand, the things to be done here will succeed through great effort. .. 49 ..
4.53.103
daivaṃ pūrvakṛtaṃ karma kathyate netaratpunaḥ ..
Fate is declared to be action done in a previous life, nothing else;
4.53.104
tannirākaraṇe yatnaḥ svayaṃ kāryo vipaścitā .. 4.2.53.50 ..
in counteracting that, effort must be made by the wise man himself. .. 4.2.53.50 ..
4.53.105
bhājanopasthitaṃ daivādbhojyaṃ nāsyaṃ svayaṃ viśet ..
Food placed in a dish by fate would not enter the mouth on its own;
4.53.106
hastavaktrodyamāttacca praviśedaudarīṃ darīm .. 51 ..
and by the effort of the hand and the mouth, it can enter the belly-cave.” .. 51 ..
4.53.107
ityudyamaṃ samarthyeśo niścitaṃ daivajitvaram ..
Thus affirming effort, which is certain to conquer fate, the Lord
4.53.108
punaśca preṣayāṃcakre gaṇānpaṃcamahārayān .. 52 ..
again sent five gaṇas of great swiftness: .. 52 ..
4.53.109
somanaṃdī naṃdiṣeṇaḥ kālapiṃgalakukkuṭāḥ ..
Somanandī, Nandiṣeṇa, Kāla, Piṅgala, and Kukkuṭa.

4.53.111
tepi svanāmnā liṃgāni śaṃbhusaṃtuṣṭi kāmyayā..
They too, having installed liṅgas under their own names desiring Śambhu's satisfaction,
4.53.112
pratiṣṭhāpya sthitāḥ kāśyāṃ viśvanirvāṇajanmani .. 54 ..
remained in Kāśī, the birthplace of universal liberation. .. 54 ..
4.53.113
somanaṃdīśvaraṃ dṛṣṭvā liṃgaṃ naṃdavane param ..
Having seen the supreme liṅga Somanandīśvara in the Nandavana,
4.53.114

a devoted man would attain supreme bliss in the realm of Soma. .. 55 ..
4.53.115
taduttare vilokyātha naṃdiṣeṇeśvaraṃ naraḥ ..
Then, having seen Nandiṣeṇeśvara to the north of it, a man,
4.53.116
ānaṃdasenāṃ saṃprāpya jayenmṛtyumapi kṣaṇāt .. 56 ..
obtaining an army of bliss, would conquer even Death in an instant. .. 56 ..
4.53.117
kāleśvaraṃ mahāliṃgaṃ gaṃgāyāḥ paścimottare ..
Having bowed to the great liṅga Kāleśvara to the northwest of the Gaṅgā,
4.53.118
praṇamya kālapāśena no badhyeta kadācana .. .. 57 ..
one would never be bound by the noose of Death. .. 57 ..
4.53.119
piṃgaleśvaramabhyarcya kāleśātkiṃciduttare ..
Having worshipped Piṅgaleśvara a little to the north of Kāleśa,
4.53.120
labhate piṃgalajñānaṃ yena tanmayatāṃ vrajet .. 58 ..
he obtains the tawny knowledge by which he attains identity with him.
4.53.121
kukkuṭeśvara liṃgasya yetra bhaktiṃ vitanvate ..
Those who show devotion here to the liṅga Kukkuṭeśvara,
4.53.122
kukkuṭāṃḍākṛtestasya na te garbhamavāpnuyuḥ .. 59 ..
which has the form of a hen's egg, do not enter a womb [again].
4.53.123
.. skaṃda uvāca .. ..
Skanda said:
4.53.124
somanaṃdi prabhṛtiṣu mune paṃcagaṇeṣvapi ..
When even the five Gaṇas, led by Somanandin, O sage,
4.53.125
ānaṃdakānanaṃ prāpya sthiteṣu sthāṇurabravīt .. 4.2.53.60 ..
had reached Ānandakānana and stayed there, Sthāṇu said:
4.53.126
kāryamasmākamevaitadyadi samyagvimṛśyate ..
"If properly considered, this is indeed my own task:
4.53.127
anenopādhināpyete tatra tiṣṭhaṃtu māmakāḥ .. 61 ..
even under this pretext, let these followers of mine remain there.
4.53.128
pramatheṣu praviṣṭeṣu māyāvīryamahatsvapi ..
When the Pramathas have entered, though great in magical power,
4.53.129
ahameva praviṣṭosmi vārāṇasyāṃ na saṃśayaḥ .. 62 ..
I myself have entered Vārāṇasī, without doubt.
4.53.130
krameṇa preṣayiṣyāmi yosti me svaparicchadaḥ ..
In due course I will send whatever retinue is mine;
4.53.131
tatra sarveṣu yāteṣu tato yāsyāmyahaṃ punaḥ .. 63 ..
when all of them have gone there, then I too shall go."
4.53.132
saṃpradhāryeti hṛdaye devadevena śūlinā ..
Having so resolved in his heart, the trident-bearing God of gods
4.53.133
praiṣiṣṭa pramathānāṃ tu tato gaṇacatuṣṭayam .. 64 ..
then dispatched a group of four Gaṇas among the Pramathas:
4.53.134
kuṃḍodaro mayūrākhyo bāṇo gokarṇa eva ca ..
Kuṇḍodara, Mayūra by name, Bāṇa, and Gokarṇa.
4.53.135
māyābalaṃ samāśritya kāśīṃ praviviśurgaṇāḥ .. 65 ..
Resorting to the power of māyā, the Gaṇas entered Kāśī.
4.53.136
kṛtvopāyaśataṃ taistu divodāsasya saṃbhrame
yadaikopi samartho na tadā tatraiva saṃsthitam ..66..
Though having tried a hundred means to cause confusion to Divodāsa, / when not even one proved capable, they remained right there.
4.53.137
aparādhaśateṣvīśaḥ kena tuṣyati karmaṇā ..
"By what action is the Lord pleased when there are a hundred transgressions?"
4.53.138
saṃpradhāryeti te cakrurliṃgārādhanamuttamam .. 67 ..
Reflecting thus, they performed the supreme worship of the liṅga:
4.53.139
ekasmiñśāṃbhave liṃge vidhinātra samarcite ..
"When a single liṅga belonging to Śambhu is properly worshipped here according to the rules,
4.53.140
kṣamettryakṣoparādhānāṃ śataṃ mokṣaṃ ca yacchati ..68..
the Three-eyed Lord forgives a hundred transgressions and grants liberation.
4.53.141
na tuṣyati tathā śaṃbhuryajñadānatapovrataiḥ ..
Śambhu is not so pleased by sacrifices, gifts, austerities, and observances,
4.53.142
yathā tuṣyetsakṛlliṃge vidhinābhyarcite sati .. 69 ..
as he is pleased when a liṅga is worshipped once according to the rules.
4.53.143
liṃgārcanavidhānajño liṃgārcanarataḥ sadā ..
One who knows the rules for worshipping the liṅga and is ever devoted to worshipping the liṅga
