O lord of the gods, declare quickly to me what [can be done] for you who have come to my home." / Indra said: / "Offer hospitality, O best of brahmins, to one who has come to your home, O virtuous muni! / Give your own bones to me quickly without hesitation.
5.268.86
atadarthamahaṃ prāptastvatsakāśaṃ munīśvara..
asthibhiste paraṃ kāryaṃ devānāṃ siddhimeṣyati..86..
It is for that purpose that I have come to you, O lord of munis. / Through your bones the supreme purpose of the gods will be accomplished."

iṃdrasya tadvacaḥ śrutvā dadhīcistoṣasaṃyutaḥ..
tataḥ prāha sahasrākṣaṃ sarvairdevaiḥ samanvitam..87..
Sūta said:
Having heard that speech of Indra, Dadhīci was filled with joy. / Then he spoke to the thousand-eyed [Indra] who was accompanied by all the gods:
5.268.88
aho nāsti mayā tulyaḥ sāṃprataṃ bhuvi kaścana..
puṇyavānyasya deveśaḥ svayamarthī gṛhāgataḥ.88..
Ah, there is none equal to me on earth today / in merit, since the lord of gods has himself come to my house as a petitioner!
5.268.89

kariṣyaṃti sadā kāryaṃ rakṣārthaṃ tridivaukasām..89..
Blessed are my bones, O lord of gods, which will always / perform what is beneficial for you and for the protection of heaven's dwellers.

eṣo'haṃ saṃpradāsyāmi priyānprāṇānkṛte tava..
gṛhāṇa svecchayā'sthīni svakāryārthaṃ puraṃdara..6.269.90..
Here, I will give up my dear life for your sake. / Take the bones at your will for your own purpose, O Purandara!
5.268.91
evamuktvā maharṣiḥ sa dhyānamāśritya satvaram..
brahmaraṃdhreṇa niḥsārya prāṇamātmānamatyajat..91..
Having spoken thus, that great seer quickly resorted to meditation, / and releasing his life-breath through the brahmarandhra, he abandoned his soul.
5.268.91_1
tadātmanā parityaktaṃ tasya gātraṃ ca tatkṣaṇāt..
patitaṃ medanīpṛṣṭhe vyasu taddvijasattamāḥ.. 91..
His body, abandoned by the self, at that instant / fell lifeless onto the surface of the earth, O best of brahmins!
5.268.93
tasminneva kāle tu tasyāsthīni śatakratuḥ..
pragṛhya viśvakarmāṇaṃ tataḥ provāca sādaram..93..
At that very time, Śatakratu, taking his bones, / respectfully addressed Viśvakarman:
5.268.94
etairasthibhiḥ śīghraṃ me kuru tvaṃ vajramāyudham..
yena vyāpādayāmyāśu vṛtraṃ dānavasattamam..94..
With these bones make for me quickly the Vajra weapon, / by which I may soon destroy Vṛtra, the greatest of the Dānavas.
5.268.95
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā viśvakarmā tvarānvitaḥ..
yathāyudhaṃ tathā cakre vajrākhyaṃ dāruṇākṛti..95..
Having heard his word, Viśvakarman in haste / made the weapon named Vajra, of terrifying form.
5.268.96
ṣaḍasri śataparvākhyaṃ madhye kṣāmaṃ vibhīṣaṇam..
pradadau ca tatastasmai sahasrākṣāya dhīmate..96..
Six-sided, called the hundred-jointed, slender in the middle, and formidable, / he gave it then to that wise thousand-eyed [god].
5.268.97
atha taṃ sa samādāya dvādaśārkasamaprabham..
samādhisthaṃ carairjñātvā vṛtraṃ saṃdhyārcane ratam..97..
Then, taking it which shone like twelve suns, / having learned from spies that Vṛtra was in meditation, engaged in twilight worship,
5.268.98
tataśca pṛṣṭhabhāgaṃ sa samāśritya trilokarāṭ..
cikṣepa vajramuddiśya tadvadhārthaṃ samutsukaḥ..98..
the king of the three worlds, approaching behind his back, / hurled the Vajra aiming at him, eager for his slaughter.
5.268.99
sa hatastena vajreṇa dānavo bhasmasādgataḥ..
śakropi hatamajñātvā bhayāttasyātha dudruve..99..
Struck by that Vajra, the Dānava turned to ashes. / But Śakra, not knowing that he was slain, fled in terror.
5.268.100
manuṣyarahite deśe viṣame gulmasaṃvṛte..
lilye śakrastadā sarvaṃ mene vṛtramayaṃ jagat..6.269.100..
In a desolate, rugged place overgrown with shrubs, / Śakra hid then, fancying the whole world filled with Vṛtra.
5.268.101
etasminnaṃtare devāḥ paśyaṃtaḥ sarvato diśam..
siddhacāraṇagandharvā ājagmuśca śatakratum..101..
Meanwhile, the gods, looking in every direction, / together with the Siddhas, Cāraṇas, and Gandharvas, approached Śatakratu.
5.268.102
tataḥ kṛcchrācca tairdṛṣṭaḥ śakro'sau gahane vane.
nilīno bhayasaṃtrasto gulmamadhye vyavasthitaḥ..102..
Then, with difficulty, they saw Śakra in the dense forest, / hidden, terrified with fear, and settled in the midst of a thicket.
5.268.103
devā ūcuḥ..
kiṃ tvaṃ bhītaḥ sahasrākṣa vṛtro'yaṃ ghātitastvayā..
parivāreṇa sarveṇa vīkṣito'smābhireva ca..103..
The gods said: / 'Why are you afraid, O thousand-eyed one? This Vṛtra has been slain by you; / and he was seen by us together with his entire entourage.
5.268.104
asmādāgaccha gacchāmo gṛhaṃ prati puraṃdara..
kuru trailokyarājyaṃ tvaṃ sāṃprataṃ hatakaṇṭakam..104..
Come out from here, O Puraṃdara, let us go home; / rule now over the kingdom of the three worlds, its thorns removed!'
5.268.105
tacchrutvā'tha viniṣkrāṃto gulmamadhyācchatakratuḥ..
hṛṣṭaromā hataṃ śrutvā vṛtraṃ dānavasattamam.. 105..
Hearing that, Śatakratu then came out from the midst of the thicket, / his hair standing on end with joy upon hearing that Vṛtra, the best of the Dānavas, had been slain.
5.268.106
atha paśyaṃti yāvattaṃ devāḥ sarve śatakratum..
tāvattejovihīnaṃ tadgātraṃ durgaṃdhitāyutam..106..
Now, as soon as all the gods looked upon Śatakratu, / so soon did they see his body bereft of splendor and filled with a foul stench.
5.268.107
dṛṣṭvā lokagururbrahmā devānsarvānuvāca ha..
śakro'yaṃ sāṃprataṃ vyāptaḥ pāpayā brahmahatyayā..107..
Seeing [him], Brahmā, the teacher of the world, said to all the gods: / 'Śakra is now overtaken by the evil sin of killing a brahmin.
5.268.108
yadanena hato vṛtro brahmabhūtaśchalena saḥ..
tasmāttyājyaḥ sudūreṇa no cetpāpamavāpsyatha..108..
Because he slew that Vṛtra, who was a brahmin, through trickery; / therefore, he must be avoided from afar, lest you incur sin.
5.268.109
brahmaghnena samaṃ sparśaḥ saṃbhāṣo'tha vinirmitaḥ..
pāpāya jāyate puṃsāṃ tasmāttaṃ dūratastyajet..109..
Touch or conversation engaged in with a slayer of a brahmin / results in sin for men; therefore, one should shun him from afar.
5.268.110
āstāṃ saṃsparśanaṃ tasya saṃbhāṣo vā viśeṣataḥ..
darśanaṃ vāpi tasyāhuḥ sarvapāpapradaṃ nṛṇām..6.269.110..
Let alone touching or especially conversing with him; / they say that even the darśana of him brings all sins upon men.'
5.268.111
sūta uvāca..
tacchrutvā brahmaṇo vākyaṃ śakro dṛṣṭvā''tmanastanum..
tejasā saṃparityaktāṃ durgandhena samāvṛtām..111..
Sūta said: / Hearing that speech of Brahmā, Śakra, seeing his own body / abandoned by splendor and pervaded by a foul stench,
5.268.112
tataḥ provāca lokeśaṃ dīnaḥ praṇatakandharaḥ..
tavāhaṃ kiṃkaro deva tvayeṃdratve niyojitaḥ..112..
then, dejected and with neck bowed low, spoke to the lord of the world: / 'O god, I am your servant, appointed to the status of Indra by you.
5.268.113
tasmātkuru prasādaṃ me brahmahatyāvināśanam..
prāyaścittaṃ vibho brūhi yena śuddhiḥ prajāyate..113.
Therefore, grant me the favor that destroys the sin of killing a brahmin; / O lord, tell me the expiation by which purification may occur.'
5.268.114
brahmovāca..
aṣṭaṣaṣṭiṣu tīrtheṣu tvaṃ snātvā balasūdana..
ātmānaṃ hemajaṃ dehi pāpapūruṣasaṃjñitam..114..
Brahmā said: / 'Having bathed in the sixty-eight sacred fords, O slayer of Bala, / offer [an image of] yourself made of gold, called the "sin-person",
5.268.115
maṃtravattaṃ yathoktaṃ ca brāhmaṇāya mahātmane..
snātvā puṇyajale tīrthe brahmaghno'hamiti bruvan..115..
accompanied by mantras and as prescribed, to a great-souled brahmin, / after bathing in the sacred ford of holy waters and declaring, "I am a slayer of a brahmin."
5.268.116
snātamātrasya te hastādyatra tatpatati kṣitau..
tejaḥ saṃjāyategātre durgaṃdhaśca praṇaśyati..116..
As soon as you have bathed, wherever that [skull] falls to the earth from your hand, / splendor will arise in your body and the foul stench will perish.
5.268.117
tasmiṃstīrthe tvayā tacca sthāpyaṃ śakra kapālakam..
maheśvarasya nāmnā ca pūjanīyaṃ tataḥ param..117..
In that sacred ford, that skull must be established by you, O Śakra; / and thereafter it is to be worshipped in the name of Maheśvara.
5.268.118
paṃcabhirvaktramaṃtraiśca tato deyā''tmatastanūḥ..
hemodbhavā dvijendrāya tataḥ śuddhimavāpsyasi..118..
And with the five face-mantras, the golden image of your own body / must then be given to the best of brahmins; then you will attain purification.'
5.268.119
śakrastu tadvacaḥ śrutvā brahmaṇo'vyaktajanmanaḥ..
kapālaṃ vṛtrajaṃ gṛhya tīrthayātrāṃ tato gataḥ..119..
Hearing those words of Brahmā, the unmanifest-born, / Śakra took the skull born of Vṛtra and then went on a pilgrimage to sacred fords.
5.268.120
aṣṭaṣaṣṭiṣu tīrtheṣu gacchansa ca sureśvaraḥ..
hāṭakeśvaraje kṣetre samāyātaḥ krameṇa ca..6.269.120..
Going among the sixty-eight sacred fords, that lord of gods / in due course arrived at the sacred field born of Hāṭakeśvara.
5.268.121
viśvāmitrahrade snātvā yāvattasmādvinirgataḥ..
kapālaṃ patitaṃ tasmātsvayameva hatātmanaḥ..121..
Having bathed in the pool of Viśvāmitra, as soon as he came out from it, / the skull fell of its own accord from the hands of the self-slayer.
5.268.122
tatastaṃ pūjayāmāsa mantrairvaktrasamudbhavaiḥ..
sarvapāpaharaiḥ puṇyairyathoktairbrahmaṇā purā..122..
Then he worshipped it with the mantras arising from the faces, / auspicious and destroying all sins, as spoken formerly by Brahmā.
5.268.123
etasminneva kāle tu durgandho nāśamāptavān..
taccharīrāddvijaśreṣṭhā mahattejo vyajāyata..123..
At that very moment, the foul stench came to an end; / from his body, O best of brahmins, a great splendor arose.
5.268.124
etasminnantare brahmā saha devaiḥ samāgataḥ..
brahmahatyāvimuktaṃ taṃ jñātvā sarvasurādhipam..124..
In the meantime, Brahmā arrived together with the gods, / knowing that the ruler of all the gods was freed from the sin of killing a brahmin.
5.268.125
śrībrahmovāca..
brahmahatyākṛto doṣo gataste surasattama..
śeṣapāpaviśuddhyarthaṃ svarṇadānaṃ prayaccha bhoḥ.. 125..
The auspicious Brahmā said: / 'The guilt caused by the sin of killing a brahmin has left you, O best of the gods; / for the sake of purifying remaining sins, offer a gift of gold, O lord!
5.268.126
kapālametaddeśe'tra yattvayā paripūjitam..
vṛtrasya paṃcabhirmaṃtrairharavaktrasamudbhavaiḥ.. 126..
Since in this place this skull of Vṛtra was worshipped by you / with the five mantras arising from the faces of Hara,
5.268.127
pradāsyasi tato bhaktyā hemajāmātmanastanum..
vidhinā maṃtrayuktena tava pāpaṃ prayāsyati..
yadyatpūrvakṛtaṃ kṛtsnaṃ pradāya brāhmaṇāya bhoḥ..127..
you shall therefore give with devotion the golden image of your body / according to the ritual rule, endowed with mantra; and by giving it to a brahmin, / whatever former sin you had done in its entirety will go away, O lord!'
5.268.128
evamuktastataḥ śakro brahmaṇā surasaṃnidhau..
tathetyuktvā tu tatkālaṃ pāpapiṃḍaṃ nijaṃ dadau..128..
Thus addressed then by Brahmā in the presence of the gods, / Śakra, saying "So be it," at that moment gave his own sin-effigy,
5.268.129
kṛtvā hemamayaṃ viprā brāhmaṇāya mahātmane..
gartātīrthasamutthāya vātākhyāyāhitāgnaye..129..
having fashioned it out of gold, O brahmins, to a great-souled brahmin / who was an agnihotrin, born at Gartātīrtha, named Vāta.
5.268.130
etasminnaṃtare vipro garhitaḥ so'tha nāgaraiḥ..
dhigdhikpāpa vṛthā vedā ye tvayā pāritāḥ purā..6.269.130..
At that moment, that brahmin was reviled by the Nāgaras: / 'Fie, fie, sinner! In vain are the Vedas that were mastered by you formerly!
5.268.131
nāsmābhiḥ saha saṃparkaṃ kadācittvaṃ kariṣyasi..
gṛhītaṃ yattvayā dānaṃ pāpapiṃḍasamudbhavam..131..
You shall never have contact with us, / since you accepted the gift originating from a sin-effigy.'
5.268.132
tataḥ provāca vipraḥ sa upamanyukulodbhavaḥ..
vivarṇavadano bhūtvā nāmnā khyātaḥ sa vātakaḥ.. 132..
Then that brahmin, born of the lineage of Upamanyu, / his face grown pale, who was renowned by the name Vātaka, said:
5.268.133
tvayā śakra pradatto me pāpapiṃḍaḥ svako yataḥ..
mayā pratigrahastena dākṣiṇyena kṛtastava..133..
'O Śakra, because your own sin-effigy was given to me by you, / its acceptance was done by me out of courtesy to you,
5.268.134
na lobhena suraśreṣṭha paśyataste vigarhitaḥ..
ahaṃ ca brāhmaṇaiḥ sarvairetairnagaravāsibhiḥ.. 134..
not out of greed, O best of the gods; before your eyes, / I have been reviled by all these brahmins residing in the town.
5.268.135
tasmānnāhaṃ grahīṣyāmi etaṃ tava pratigraham..135..
Therefore, I will not accept this gift of yours.'
5.268.136
bhūyo'pi tava dāsyāmi na tvaṃ gṛhṇāsi cetpunaḥ.. bra
hmaśāpaṃ pradāsyāmi dāruṇaṃ ca kṣayātmakam..136..
'I shall give it to you again; if you do not accept it once more, / I will give a brahmin's curse, terrible and destructive.'
5.268.137
iṃdra uvāca..
vedāgaṃpārago vipro yadi kuryātpratigraham..
na sa pāpena lipyeta padmapatramivāṃbhasā..137..
Indra said: / 'If a brahmin who has mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas should accept a gift, / he is not stained by sin, like a lotus leaf by water.
5.268.138
tasmātte pātakaṃ nāsti śṛṇuṣvātra vaco mama..
etaistvaṃ garhite yasmādbrāhmaṇairnagarodbhavaiḥ..138..
Therefore, there is no guilt for you; hear these words of mine: / because you have been reviled by these brahmins born in the town,
5.268.139
eteṣāṃ sarvakṛtyeṣu pradhānastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi..
eteṣāṃ putrapautrā ye bhaviṣyaṃti tathā tava..139..
you shall be the foremost among them in all rites; / their sons and grandsons who will be born, as well as yours,

they will all undoubtedly act according to their command; / any rite, however small, performed without your word, O brahmin,
5.268.141
teṣāṃ saṃpatsyate vandhyaṃ yathā bhasmahutaṃ tathā..
kapālamocanaṃ nāma khyātametadbhaviṣyati..141..
shall turn out to be barren for them, like an oblation offered into ashes; / and this [place] will become famous by the name Kapālamocana.
5.268.142

Those men who, having remembered my skull, O good brahmin, / perform a śrāddha there, those men, endowed with liberation, / especially during the śrāddha fortnight, will attain the supreme state.

Having spoken thus, the thousand-eyed [Indra] then vanished from sight.
5.268.145

tataḥ provāca śakrastānbrāhmaṇānnagarodbhavān..

Then Śakra spoke to those brahmins born in the city:
"Whoever bathes at Kapālamocana and worships the god,
5.268.147
brahmahatyodbhavaṃ pāpaṃ tasya naśyatyasaṃśayam..
mahāpātakayukto vā vipāpmā saṃbhaviṣyati..147..
his sin arising from the murder of a brahmin is destroyed without doubt,
or even if he is burdened with a mortal sin, he will become free of sin."
5.268.148
sa tatheti pratijñāya brāhmaṇānnagarodbhavān..
tatraiva svāśramaṃ kṛtvā pūjayāmāsa śaṃkaram..148..
Having agreed [saying], "So be it," to the brahmins born in the city,
he made his own hermitage right there and worshipped Śaṃkara.
5.268.149
tataḥprabhṛti yatkiṃcitteṣāṃ kṛtyaṃ prajāyate..

From then on, whatever duty arises for them,

yathā deveśvarasyātra pāpaṃ naṣṭaṃ mahātmanaḥ..
brahmahatyā yathā naṣṭā tasmiṃstīrthe dvijottamāḥ..152..
how the great-souled lord of gods had his sin destroyed here,
[and] how the murder of a brahmin was destroyed at that sacred ford, O best of brahmins!
