Formerly, I was a brahmin known by the name of Vatsa on the earth,
who had practiced various scriptures and mastered the Vedas.
5.29.36
etasminneva kāle tu menakā ca varāpsarāḥ ..
vasaṃtasamaye prāptā martyaloke yadṛcchayā .. 36 ..
At that very time, Menakā, an excellent apsaras,
arrived by chance in the mortal world during the spring season.
5.29.37
sā gatā bhramamāṇātha kāmyakaṃnāma tadvanam ..
mattakokilanādāḍhyaṃ manojñadrumasaṃ kulam .. 37 ..
Wandering about, she then went to that forest named Kāmyaka,
which was rich with the calls of rutting cuckoos and filled with delightful trees,
5.29.38
yatrāste muniśārdūlo devarāta iti smṛtaḥ ..
vratasvādhyāyasaṃpannastapasā dhvastakilviṣaḥ .. 38 ..
where dwelt a tiger among sages known as Devarāta,
endowed with vows and Vedic recitation, his sins destroyed by austerity.
5.29.39
upaviṣṭo nadītīre devatārccāparāyaṇaḥ ..
śraddhayā parayā yukta ekākī nirjane vane .. 39 ..
Seated on the riverbank, devoted to worshiping the deity,
endowed with supreme faith, he was alone in the desolate forest.
5.29.40
atha sā paśyatastasya vivastrā prāviśajjalam ..
divyarūpasamopetā gharmārtā varavarṇinī .. .. 6.29.40 ..
Then, as he looked on, she entered the water without clothes—
that fair-complexioned woman endowed with celestial beauty, afflicted by the heat.
5.29.41
atha tasya munīṃdrasya retaścaskanda tatkṣaṇāt ..
dṛṣṭvā tāṃ cārusarvāṃgīṃ jalamadhyaṃ samāśritām .. 41 ..
Then the semen of that lord of sages was instantly discharged
upon seeing her, lovely in every limb, having entered the middle of the water.
5.29.42
etasminnaṃtare prāptā sāraṃgī supipāsitā ..
jalamiśraṃ tayā retaḥ pītaṃ sarvamaśeṣataḥ .. 42 ..
Meanwhile, a very thirsty doe arrived;
she drank the semen mixed with the water, completely and without remainder.
5.29.43
atha sā'pi dadhe garbhaṃ mānuṣaṃ vai prabhāvataḥ ..
amogharetaso māse suṣuve daśame tataḥ..43..
Then, through the power of the unfailing semen, she too bore a human fetus,
and in the tenth month she gave birth.
5.29.44
janayāmāsa dīptāṃgī kanyāṃ padmadalekṣaṇām ..
tasminneva jale puṇye devarātāśramaṃ prati .. 44 ..
The doe with radiant limbs gave birth to a maiden with eyes like lotus petals
in that very sacred water, near Devarāta’s hermitage.
5.29.45
atha tāṃ sa munirjñātvā svajñānena svavīryajām ..
kṛpayā parayāviṣṭo jagrāha ca pupoṣa ca .. 45 ..
Then that sage, recognizing by his inner knowledge that she was born of his own semen,
was overwhelmed with supreme compassion; he took her and raised her.
5.29.46
snehena mahatā yuktaḥ kṛtakautukamaṃgalaḥ ..
rakṣamāṇo vane caināṃ śvāpadebhyaḥ prayatnataḥ .. 46 ...
Filled with great affection, having performed the auspicious rites of childhood,
he protected her with effort from beasts of prey in the forest.
5.29.47
ājahāra sumṛṣṭāni tatkṛte suphalāni saḥ ..
svayaṃ gatvā sudūraṃ ca kānane śvāpadākule .. 47 ..
For her sake he brought very sweet, fine fruits,
having gone far away himself in the forest teeming with beasts of prey.
5.29.48
tatrasthā vavṛdhe sā ca nāmnā khyātā mṛgāvatī ..
śuklapakṣe yathā vyomni kaleva śaśalakṣmaṇaḥ .. 48 ..
Staying there, she grew, known by the name Mṛgāvatī,
like a digit of the moon in the sky during the bright fortnight.
5.29.49
atha sā bhramamāṇena mayā dṛṣṭā mṛgekṣaṇā ..
tato'haṃ kāmabāṇena tatkṣaṇāttāḍito hṛdi .. .. 49 ..
Then, as I was wandering, she of deer-like eyes was seen by me;
thereupon, I was instantly struck in the heart by the arrow of Kāma.
5.29.50
vijñāya ca kumārīṃ tāṃ savarṇāṃ cāruhāsinīm ..
ādareṇa gṛhaṃ gatvā sa muniryācitastataḥ .. 6.29.50 ..
And knowing that sweet-smiling maiden to be of the same caste,
I respectfully went to his dwelling and then asked the sage:
5.29.51
prayacchaināṃ mama brahmanpatnyarthaṃ nija kanyakām ..
yathātmā poṣayiṣyāmi bhojanācchādanādibhiḥ .. 51 ..
“O brahmin, give this daughter of yours to me for a wife;
I will nurture her like my own self, with food, clothing, and the like.”
5.29.52
tatastena pradattā me tatkṣaṇādeva sundarī ..
vidhinā śāstradṛṣṭena nakṣatre bhaga daivate .. 52 ..
Then he gave the beautiful girl to me that very moment,
according to the rule seen in the scriptures, under the constellation presided over by Bhaga.
5.29.53
tataḥ katipayāhasya mayoḍhā sā suvismitā ..
sakhījanasamāyuktā phalārthaṃ nirgatā vane .. 53 ..
Then, after a few days, she who was married by me, full of wonder,
went out into the forest with her female companions in search of fruit.
5.29.54
atha vīrudhasaṃchanne vane tasminsusaṃsthite ..
tayā nyastaṃ padaṃ mūrdhni tṛṇācchannasya bhoginaḥ .. 54 ..
Now, in that forest densely covered with creepers and well established,
her foot was placed upon the head of a serpent concealed by grass.
5.29.55
sā daṣṭā sahasā tena patitā vasudhātale ..
viṣārditā gataprāṇā tatkṣaṇādeva bhāminī .. 55 ..
Suddenly bitten by it, she fell to the ground;
afflicted by poison, that lovely woman lost her life that very instant.
5.29.56
atha sakhyaḥ samāgatya tasyā duḥkhena duḥkhitāḥ ..
śaśaṃsustā yathāvṛttaṃ rudantyo mama sūtaja .. 56 ..
Then her friends, gathered together, grieving with her grief,
wept and reported what had occurred to me, O son of Sūta.
5.29.57
tato'haṃ satvaraṃ gatvā dṛṣṭvā tāṃ patitāṃ bhuvi ..
vilāpānkṛtavāndīno ruditaṃ karuṇasvaram .. 57 ..
Then I went in haste, and seeing her fallen on the ground,
I, wretched, uttered laments, weeping with a plaintive voice:
5.29.58
iyaṃ me suviśālākṣī manaḥprāṇasamā priyā ..
mṛtā bhūmau yayā hīno nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe .. 58 ..
“This wide-eyed woman, my beloved who was equal to my mind and life,
lies dead on the earth; deprived of her, I have no desire to live.
5.29.59
so'hamadya gamiṣyāmi paralokaṃ sahānayā ..
priyārahitaharmyasya jīvitasya ca kiṃ phalam .. 59 ..
Today I will go to the other world along with her;
what is the use of a life, and of a mansion, bereft of the beloved?
5.29.60
putrapautravadhūbhiśca bhṛtyavargayutasya ca ..
patnīhīnāni no rejurgṛhāṇi gṛhamedhinām .. 6.29.60 ..
Even with sons, grandsons, daughters-in-law, and a host of servants,
the homes of householders do not shine when bereft of a wife.
5.29.61
yadīyaṃ karṇanetrāṃtā tanvaṃgī madhurasvarā..
na jīvati pṛthuśroṇī mariṣye' hamasaṃśayam .. 61 ..
If this slender-limbed, sweet-voiced woman with broad hips,
whose eyes reach to her ears, does not live, I shall surely die.”
5.29.62
evaṃ vilapamānasya mama sūta kulodvaha ..
āgatāḥ suhṛdaḥ sarve ruruduste'pi duḥkhitāḥ .. 62 ..
As I was lamenting thus, O son of Sūta, uplifter of your family,
all my friends arrived, and they too wept in sorrow.
5.29.63
ruditvā suciraṃ tatra taiḥ samaṃ mahatīṃ citām ..
kṛtvā tāṃ saṃnidhāyātha pradatto havyavāhanaḥ .. 63 ..
Having wept for a long time there together with them, and having prepared a great pyre,
I placed her [upon it] and then set fire to it.
5.29.64
tata ādāya māṃ kṛcchrānninyuśca svagṛhaṃ prati ..
rudantaṃ praskhalantaṃ ca muhyamānaṃ padepade .. 64 ..
Then, with difficulty, taking hold of me, they led me toward my own house,
as I was weeping, stumbling, and fainting at every step.
5.29.65
tato niśāvaśeṣe'hamutthāya tvarayā'nvitaḥ ..
kāṃtāduḥkhaparītātmā gato'raṇyaṃ tadeva hi .. 65 ..
Then, before the night was over, I arose in haste,
my soul overwhelmed by grief for my beloved, and went back to that very forest.
5.29.66
kāmenonmattatāṃ prāpto bhramamāṇa itastataḥ ..
vilapanneva duḥkhārto vane janavivarjite .. 66 ..
Driven mad by desire, wandering here and there,
continually lamenting, afflicted with grief in the forest deserted by people:
5.29.67
kva gatāsi viśālākṣi vijane'sminvihāya mām ..
nāhaṃ gṛhaṃ gamiṣyāmi mama duḥkhāya nirdayaḥ .. 67 ..
“Where have you gone, O wide-eyed one, leaving me in this solitude?
Cruel to my grief, I will not return home.
5.29.68
eṣo'ruṇakarasparśātsvābhāṃ tyajati caṃdramāḥ ..
niśākṣaye nirutsāho yathāhaṃ vidhinā kṛtaḥ .. 68 ..
At the touch of dawn's rays, this moon relinquishes its luster
at the end of night, rendered dispirited by fate just as I am.
5.29.69
ayaṃ tanuḥ samāyāti savitā raktamaṃḍalaḥ..
nigadiṣyati me vārtāṃ nūnaṃ kaccittvadudbhavām .. 69 ..
Here rises the sun, a slender red orb;
surely he will tell me some news concerning you.
5.29.70
gaganaṃ vyāpayansūryaḥ saṃtāpayati māṃ bhṛśam ..
bāhye cābhyaṃtare kāmaḥ kathaṃ vakṣyāmi jīvitam .. 6.29.70 ..
Pervading the sky, the sun scorches me intensely;
with passion outside and inside, how shall I endure my life?
5.29.71
karīṃdaḥ svayamabhyeti tatkucābhau samudvahan ..
kumbhau gatvā tu pṛcchāmi yadi śaṃsati tāṃ priyām .. 71 ..
The lord of elephants approaches of his own accord, carrying
two frontal globes resembling her breasts; I shall go and ask him if he can tell of that beloved.”
5.29.72
evaṃ pralapamānasya mama moho mahānabhūt ..
bhāskarāṃśuprataptasya madanākulitasya ca .. 72 ..
As I was lamenting in this manner, great delusion overtook me,
scorched by the sun's rays and agitated by passion.
5.29.73
yaṃyaṃ paśyāmi tatrāhaṃ bhramamāṇo mahāvane ..
vṛkṣaṃ vā prāṇino vāpi taṃtaṃ pṛcchāmi mohataḥ .. 73 ..
Whatever I saw there while wandering in the great forest—
whether a tree or a living creature—I asked it out of delusion:
5.29.74
tvaddaṃtamusalaprakhyaṃ yasyā ūruyugaṃ gaja ..
tāṃ bālāṃ vada ceddṛṣṭā dayāṃ kṛtvā mamopari .. 74
“O elephant, if you have seen that young woman whose two thighs
resemble your tusk-pestles, speak, taking pity on me!”
5.29.75
tvayā jaṃbūka ceddṛṣṭā biṃbāphalanibhādharā ..
dayitā mama tadbrūhi śreyaste bhavitā mahat .. 75 ..

bhramamāṇā vane dṛṣṭā mama prāṇasamā priyā ..76..
Or else, O bilva tree, declare if you have seen wandering in the forest / my beloved, equal to my very life, whose breasts resemble bilva fruits. / 76
5.29.77
tvatpuṣpasadṛśāṃgī sā mama bhāryā manasvinī ..
sa tvaṃ caṃpaka jānīṣe yadi tvaṃ śaṃsa me drutam ..77..
Her limbs are like your blossoms, that wise wife of mine; / if you know [her], O campaka, tell me quickly. / 77
5.29.78
madhūka tava puṣpeṇa dayitāyāḥ samau śubhau ..
kapolau pāṃḍuracchāyau dṛṣṭvā tvāṃ smṛtimāgatau ..78..
O madhūka, my beloved's lovely cheeks, pale in hue, / are like your blossom; seeing you, the memory has come to me. / 78
5.29.79
kadalīstaṃbha suvyaktaṃ priyāyāśca sukomalau ..
ūrū tvatto'pi tanvaṃgyāḥ satyenātmānamālabhe ..79..
O plantain stem, clearly the thighs of my slender-limbed beloved / are far softer even than you; by truth I swear upon myself! / 79
5.29.80
bhobho mṛga na me bhāryā tvayā dṛṣṭā'tra kānane ..
tvatsame locane spaṣṭe kajjalena samāvṛte .. 6.29.80 ..
O deer, have you not seen my wife here in the forest? / Her distinct eyes, adorned with collyrium, are just like yours. / 6.29.80

ya eṣa śrūyate rāvo vibhramaṃ janayanmama ..
kiṃvā pikasamuttho 'yaṃ kiṃ vā me dayitodbhavaḥ.. 85 ..
This cry that is heard, causing me delirium— / has it arisen from a cuckoo, or has it arisen from my beloved? / 85

Then, knowing all that through his eye of wisdom, / the sage, overcome with compassion, spoke angrily to his disciple Śrīvardhana:
5.29.583_19
na me priyaṃ kṛtaṃ śiṣya tvayaitatkarma kurvatā..
śapatā brāhmaṇaṃ dīnaṃ naiṣa dharmastapasvinām..168..
'Disciple, you have not done what is pleasing to me by performing this deed, / cursing a wretched brahmin; this is not the duty of ascetics.
5.29.583_20
samo māne'pamāne ca samaloṣṭāśmakāṃcanaḥ..
tapasvī siddhimāyāti suhṛcchatrusamākṛtiḥ..169..
Equal in honor and dishonor, seeing a lump of earth, a stone, and gold as the same, / regarding friend and foe alike—such an ascetic attains perfection.
5.29.583_21
tasmādajānatā vatsa śapto'yaṃ brāhmaṇastvayā..
bālyabhāvātprasādo'sya bhūyoyukto mamājñayā.. 6.29.170 ..
Therefore, my child, this brahmin was cursed by you unwittingly / out of childishness; by my command, favor should be extended to him once again.'
5.29.583_22
atha śrīvardhanaḥ prāha praṇipatya nijaṃ gurum ..
amarṣavaśamāpannaḥ kṛtāṃjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ .. 171 ..
Then Śrīvardhana, bowing down to his guru, / overcome by indignation, stood with joined palms and said:
5.29.583_23
ajñānādyadivā jñānānmayā yadvyāhṛtaṃ vacaḥ ..
tattathaiva na saṃdehastasmānmaunaṃ guro kuru .. 172 ..
'Whether from ignorance or knowledge, the word that has been spoken by me / is indeed so; there is no doubt. Therefore, O guru, keep silent.
5.29.583_24
na mṛṣā vacanaṃ proktaṃ svaireṇāpi guro mayā ..
kiṃ punaryattavārthāya tasmānmaunaṃ samācara .. 173 ..
No false word has ever been uttered by me, even in jest, O guru; / how much less when it concerns your welfare! Therefore, practice silence.
5.29.583_25
paścādudayate sūryaḥ śoṣaṃ yāti mahārṇavaḥ ..
api meruśca śīryeta na me syādanyathā vacaḥ .. 174 ..
The sun may rise in the west, the great ocean may dry up, / and even Mount Meru may crumble, but my word shall not prove otherwise.'
5.29.583_26
tamuvāca guruḥ śiṣyaṃ sa punaḥ ślakṣṇayā girā ..
jānāmyahaṃ na te vāṇī kathaṃcijjāyate'nyathā .. 175 ..
To that disciple, the guru spoke again in gentle words: / 'I know that your word can never become otherwise.
5.29.583_27
sadā śiṣyo vayaḥsthopi śāsanīyaḥ prayatnataḥ ...
kiṃ punarbāla eva tvaṃ tena tvāṃ vacmi bhūriśaḥ .. 176 ..
A disciple, even when grown of age, must always be carefully instructed; / how much more so when you are still a boy! Therefore, I speak to you repeatedly.
5.29.583_28
dharmaṃ na vyayate ko'pi munīnāṃ pūrvasaṃcitam ..
tapodharmavihīnānāṃ gatisteṣāṃ na vidyate .. 177 ..
No one exhausts the previously accumulated virtue of sages; / but for those deprived of austerity and virtue, no [good] destination exists.
5.29.583_29
kṣamaikā siddhidā proktā yatīnāṃ ca viśeṣataḥ 3..
Forbearance alone is said to grant perfection, especially to ascetics.
5.29.583_30
tasmātkṣamāṃ puraskṛtya vartitavyaṃ tapasvibhiḥ .. 178 ..
Therefore, placing forbearance foremost, ascetics must conduct themselves.
5.29.583_31
na pāpaṃ prati pāpaḥ syādbuddhireṣā sanātanī..
ātmanaiva hataḥ pāpo yaḥ pāpaṃ tu samācaret..179..
One should not be evil toward evil; this is the eternal wisdom. / The sinner who commits evil is destroyed by his own self.
5.29.583_32
dagdhaḥ sa dahate bhūyo hatameva nihaṃti ca..
samyagjñānaparityakto yaḥ pāpe pāpamācaret..6.29.180...
Bereft of right knowledge, he who repays evil with evil / burns that which is already burned and strikes that which is already slain.
5.29.583_33
upakāriṣu yaḥ sādhuḥ sādhutve tasya ko guṇaḥ..
apakāriṣu yaḥ sādhuḥ kīrtyate janaiḥ.. 181...
What virtue is there in his goodness, who is good to those who help? / He alone is praised by people who is good to those who do harm.'
5.29.583_34
evamuktvā sa taṃ śiṣyaṃ tato māmidamabravīt ..
dayayā parayā yuktaḥ suvrataḥ śaṃsitavrataḥ .. 182 ..
Having spoken thus to that disciple, Suvrata of laudable vows, / filled with supreme compassion, then spoke this to me:
5.29.583_35
nānyathā vacanaṃ bhāvi mama śiṣyasya pannaga ..
kañcitkālaṃ pratīkṣasva tasmātsarpavapuḥsthitaḥ .. 183 ..
'The word of my disciple will not be otherwise, O serpent. / Therefore, remaining in the body of a serpent, wait for some time.'
5.29.583_36
.. sarpa uvāca .. ..
kasminkāle muniśreṣṭha śāpo me'stamupaiṣyati ..
prasādaṃ kuru dīnasya śāpasyājñāninastathā .. 184 ..
The serpent said: / 'At what time, O best of sages, will my curse come to an end? / Show favor to me, wretched and ignorant of the curse.'
5.29.583_37
.. suvrata uvāca .. ..
muhūrtamapi gītādi yaḥ karoti śivālaye ..
na tasya śakyate kartuṃ saṃkhyā dharmasya bhadraka .. 185 ..
Suvrata said: / 'He who performs singing and other [arts] in the abode of Śiva, even for a moment— / the measure of his merit cannot be calculated, good sir.
5.29.583_38
muhūrtamapi yo vighnaṃ karoti ca mahotsave ..
tasya pāpasya no saṃkhyā kartuṃ śakyā hi kenacit .. 186 ..
And he who creates an obstacle in a great festival, even for a moment— / the measure of his sin indeed cannot be calculated by anyone.
5.29.583_39
tasmāttvaṃ pāpako vipro naiva muktimavāpsyasi ..
vārtāsaṃgena durbuddhe tasmācchṛṇu vaco mama ...87..
Therefore you, a sinful brahmin, will not attain liberation / through mere conversation, O evil-minded one; therefore, listen to my words.
5.29.583_40
śaivaṃ ṣaḍakṣaraṃ maṃtraṃ yojapecchraddhayānvitaḥ ..
api brahmavadhā tpāpaṃ jātaṃ tasya praṇaśyati .. 188 ..
Whoever, endowed with faith, recites the six-syllabled Śaiva mantra, / even the sin born of slaying a brahmin is destroyed for him.
5.29.583_41
daśabhirdinajaṃ pāpaṃ viṃśatyā vatsarodbhavam ..
ṣaḍakṣarasya jāpyena pāpaṃ kṣālayate naraḥ .. 189 ..
With ten [repetitions] a man washes away sin born of a day; with twenty, that of a year, / by the recitation of the six-syllabled [mantra].
5.29.583_42
tasmāttvaṃ jalamadhyasthastaṃ maṃtraṃ japa sādaram ..
yena pāpaṃ kṣayaṃ yāti kṛtamapyanyajanmani .. 6.29.190 ..
Therefore, staying within the water, recite that mantra with reverence, / by which sin, even committed in another birth, goes to destruction.
5.29.583_43
yadā tvāṃ jalamadhyasthaṃ vatsonāma dvijo ruṣā ..
tāḍayiṣyati daṇḍena tadā mokṣamavāpsyasi .. 191 ..
When, while you are in the water, a twice-born named Vatsa strikes you / in anger with a stick, then you shall attain liberation.
5.29.583_44
tasmādgaccha drutaṃ sarpa sthānādasmājjalāśaye ..
kiñcidiṣṭaṃ mayā prokto virarāma sa sanmuniḥ .. 192 ..
Therefore, go quickly from this place, O serpent, to a reservoir of water.' / Having spoken what was agreeable to me, that good sage fell silent.
5.29.583_45
tato'haṃ duḥkhasaṃyuktaḥ saṃprāpto'tra jalāśaye ..
ṣaḍakṣaraṃ japanmantraṃ nityameva vyavasthitaḥ .. 193 ..
Then, filled with sorrow, I arrived here at this reservoir of water, / and constantly remained reciting the six-syllabled mantra.
5.29.583_46
tvatprasādādahaṃ muktaḥ sarpatvādbrāhmaṇottama ..
kiṃ karomi priyaṃ te'dya tasmācchīghrataraṃ vada .. 194 ..
By your favor, O best of brahmins, I am freed from the state of a serpent. / What pleasant thing may I do for you today? Therefore, speak quickly.
5.29.583_47
vatsonāma na sandehaḥ sa tvaṃ yaḥ kīrtito mama ..
suvratena vimānaṃ me paśyaitadupasarpati .. 195 ..

5.29.583_50
athovāca sa māṃ bhūyaḥ sotsukaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ..
praśnabhāraḥ samākhyātastvayā mama dvijottama .. 198 ..
