tato gacchenmahīpāla daśāśvamedhikaṃ param .
tīrthaṃ sarvaguṇopetaṃ mahāpātakanāśanam .. 180.1 ..

Having gone there, O great king, bathed, and worshipped Īśvara, / a man obtains the fruit of ten horse sacrifices.
6.3.180.3

aśvamedho mahāyajño bahusambhāradakṣiṇaḥ .
aśakyaḥ prākṛtaiḥ kartuṃ kathaṃ teṣāṃ phalaṃ labhet .. 180.3 ..
Yudhiṣṭhira said: / The horse sacrifice is a great sacrifice requiring abundant provisions and sacrificial fees, / impossible for ordinary men to perform; how could one obtain its fruit?
6.3.180.4
atyāścaryamidaṃ tattvaṃ tvayoktaṃ vadatā satā .
yathā me jāyate śraddhā dīrghāyustvaṃ tathā vada .. 180.4 ..
This is a most wondrous truth stated by you, an eloquent good man. / Long-lived one, speak in such a way that faith may arise in me.
6.3.180.5
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca -
idamāścaryabhūtaṃ hi gauryā pṛṣṭastriyambakaḥ .
tatte'haṃ sampravakṣyāmi pṛcchate nipuṇāya vai .. 180.5 ..
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / This wondrous matter was indeed asked of the Three-eyed Lord by Gaurī; / that I shall declare to you, who ask with great discernment.
6.3.180.6
purā vṛṣastho deveśa hyumayā saha śaṅkaraḥ .
kadācitparyaṭanpṛthivīṃ narmadātaṭamāśritaḥ .. 180.6 ..
Long ago, Śaṅkara, the lord of gods, mounted on his bull along with Umā, / once wandering over the earth, resorted to the bank of the Narmadā.
6.3.180.7
daśāśvamedhikaṃ tīrthaṃ dṛṣṭvā devo maheśvaraḥ .
tīrthaṃ pratyañjaliṃ baddhvā namaścakre trilocanaḥ .. 180.7 ..
Seeing the Daśāśvamedhika sacred ford, the god Maheśvara, / the three-eyed one, folded his hands toward the sacred ford and bowed.
6.3.180.8
kṛtāñjalipuṭaṃ devaṃ dṛṣṭvā devīdamabravīt .. 180.8 ..
Seeing the god with hands joined in reverent salutation, the goddess said this:
6.3.180.9
devyuvāca -
kimetaddevadeveśa carācaranamaskṛta .
prahvanamrāñjaliṃ baddhvā bhaktyā paramayā yutaḥ .. 180.9 ..
The goddess said: / What is this, O Lord of the gods of gods, bowed to by all moving and unmoving beings, / that you stand with hands folded low in obeisance, filled with supreme devotion?
6.3.180.10
etadāścaryamatulaṃ sarvaṃ kathaya me prabho .. 180.10 ..
Explain all this peerless wonder to me, O Lord.
6.3.180.11
īśvara uvāca -
pratyakṣaṃ paśya tīrthasya phalaṃ mā vismitā bhava .
viyatsthā me bhuvisthasya kṣaṇaṃ devi sthirā bhava .. 180.11 ..
Īśvara said: / See the fruit of the sacred ford directly; do not be amazed. / Remaining in the sky while I am on the earth, be still for a moment, O goddess.
6.3.180.12
evamuktvā tu deveśo gauravarṇo dvijo'bhavat .
kṣutkṣāmakaṇṭho jaṭilaḥ śuṣko dhamanisaṃtataḥ .. 180.12 ..
Having spoken thus, the lord of gods became a fair-complexioned twice-born, / his throat emaciated with hunger, with matted hair, dried up, his veins standing out.
6.3.180.13
upaviśya bhuvaḥ pṛṣṭhe susvaraṃ mantramuccaran .
kramapriyo mahādevo mādhuryeṇa pramodayan .. 180.13 ..
Sitting on the surface of the earth, uttering mantras in an exquisite tone, / Mahādeva, who loved the stepwise recitation, delighted [all] with its sweetness.
6.3.180.14
śrutvā tāṃ madhurāṃ vāṇīṃ svayaṃ devena nirmitām .
saṃbhrāntā brāhmaṇāḥ sarve snātuṃ ye tatra cāgatāḥ .. 180.14 ..
Hearing that sweet voice produced by the god himself, / all the brahmins who had come there to bathe were bewildered.
6.3.180.15
nityakriyā ca sarveṣāṃ vismṛtā śrutivibhramāt .
taṃ dṛṣṭvā paṭhamānaṃ tu kṣutpipāsābhipīḍitam .. 180.15 ..
And their daily ritual was forgotten due to confusion over the sacred text. / Seeing him reciting, tormented by hunger and thirst,
6.3.180.16
dvijo'nyamantrayatkaścidbhaktyā taṃ bhojanāya vai .
prasādaḥ kriyatāṃ brahmanbhojanāya gṛhe mama .. 180.16 ..
a certain twice-born invited him with devotion to take food: / “O brahmin, grant me the favor of taking a meal at my house.
6.3.180.17
adya me saphalaṃ janma hyadya me saphalāḥ kriyāḥ .
sarvānkāmānpradāsyanti prītā me'dya pitāmahāḥ .. 180.17 ..
Today my birth has borne fruit; today my rituals have borne fruit! / Pleased today, my forefathers will grant all desires.
6.3.180.18
tvayi bhukte dvijaśreṣṭha prasīda tvaṃ dhruvaṃ mama .
evamukto mahādevo dvijarūpadharastadā .. 180.18 ..
When you have eaten, O best of the twice-born, be surely gracious to me.” / Thus addressed, Mahādeva, who was then wearing the guise of a twice-born,
6.3.180.19
prahasya pratyuvācedaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ ślakṣṇayā girā .
mayā varṣasahasraṃ tu nirāhāraṃ tapaḥ kṛtam .. 180.19 ..
laughed gently and replied to the brahmin in smooth words: / “For a thousand years I have performed austerity without food.
6.3.180.20
idānīṃ tu gṛhe tasya kariṣye dvijasattama .
daśabhirvājimedhaiśca yeneṣṭaṃ pāraṇaṃ tathā .. 180.20 ..
Now, O best of the twice-born, I shall take the breaking of my fast / in the house of him who has performed ten horse sacrifices.”
6.3.180.21
ityukto devadevena brāhmaṇo vismayānvitaḥ .
uttamāṅgaṃ vidhunvanvai jagāma svagṛhaṃ prati .. 180.21 ..
Thus addressed by the god of gods, the brahmin was filled with astonishment; / shaking his head, he went back to his own house.
6.3.180.22
evaṃ te bahavo viprāḥ pratyākhyāte nimantraṇe .
purāṇārthamajānanto nāstikā bahavo gatāḥ .. 180.22 ..
In this way, many brahmins, when their invitation was rejected,
ignorant of the meaning of the Purāṇas and lacking faith, went away in great numbers.
6.3.180.23
atha kaściddvijo vidvānpurāṇārthasya tattvavit .
devaṃ nimantrayāmāsa dvijarūpadharaṃ śivam .. 180.23 ..
Then a certain learned brahmin, who knew the truth of the Purāṇic meaning,
invited the god Śiva, who was bearing the form of a brahmin.
6.3.180.24
tathaiva so'pi devena proktaḥ sa prāha taṃ punaḥ .
manasā cintayitvā tu purāṇoktaṃ dvijottamaḥ .. 180.24 ..
He too was addressed in the very same way by the god. Pondering in his mind
what is stated in the Purāṇas, the best of brahmins spoke to him in turn:
6.3.180.25
smṛtivedapurāṇeṣu yaduktaṃ tattathā bhavet .
iti niścitya taṃ vipramuvāca prahasanniva .. 180.25 ..
“Whatever is stated in the Smṛtis, Vedas, and Purāṇas, that must indeed be so.”
Having thus resolved, as if smiling, he said to that brahmin:
6.3.180.26
bhobho vipra pratīkṣasva yāvadāgamanaṃ punaḥ .
ityuktvā tu dvijo gatvā daśāśvamedhikaṃ param .. 180.26 ..
“O brahmin, please wait until my return.”
Having said this, the brahmin went to the supreme Daśāśvamedhika [tīrtha].
6.3.180.27
snānaṃ mahālambhanādi kṛtaṃ tena dvijanmanā .
japaṃ śrāddhaṃ tathā dānaṃ kṛtvā dharmānusārataḥ .. 180.27 ..
A ritual ablution, the great sacrificial rites and the rest were performed by that twice-born;
recitation, an ancestral offering, and charity he performed according to dharma.
6.3.180.28
saṃkalpya kapilāṃ tatra purāṇoktavidhānataḥ .
samāyāttvaritaṃ tatra yatrāsau tiṣṭhate dvijaḥ .. 180.28 ..
Having made a resolution to donate a brown cow there according to the rule declared in the Purāṇas,
he came back quickly to the place where that brahmin was waiting.
6.3.180.29
athāgatya dvijaṃ prāha vājimedhaḥ kṛto mayā .
uttiṣṭha me gṛhaṃ ramyaṃ bhojanārthaṃ hi gamyatām .. 180.29 ..
Then, having arrived, he said to the brahmin: “A horse sacrifice has been performed by me.
Arise, let us go to my delightful house to eat.”
6.3.180.30
ityuktaḥ śaṅkarastena brāhmaṇenātivismitaḥ .
uvāca brāhmaṇaṃ deva idānīṃ tvamito gataḥ .. 180.30 ..
Thus addressed by that brahmin, Śaṃkara, greatly astonished,
said to the brahmin: “O god-like man, you have only just gone from here;
6.3.180.31
dvijavarya kathaṃ ceṣṭā daśa yajñā mahādhanāḥ .. 180.31 ..
O best of brahmins, how were ten sacrifices of great expense performed?”
6.3.180.32
dvija uvāca -
na vicārastvayā kāryaḥ kṛtā yajñā na saṃśayaḥ .
yadi vedāḥ pramāṇaṃ taṃ bhuvi devā dvijāstathā .. 180.32 ..
The brahmin said:
“You should have no doubt: the sacrifices have been performed without question,
if the Vedas are an authority, and likewise the gods and brahmins on earth;
6.3.180.33
daśāśvamedhikaṃ tīrthaṃ tathā satyaṃ dvijottama .
yadi vedapurāṇoktaṃ vākyaṃ niḥsaṃśayaṃ bhavet .. 180.33 ..
if the sacred ford Daśāśvamedhika is truly so, O best of brahmins,
and if the word declared in the Vedas and Purāṇas is beyond doubt;
6.3.180.34
tadā prāptaṃ mayā sarvaṃ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā .
evamuktastu deveśa āstikyaṃ tasya cetasaḥ .. 180.34 ..
then all has been obtained by me; there is no deliberation to be made here.”
When addressed in this way, the Lord of gods, [noticing] the faith of his mind,
6.3.180.35
vimṛśya bahubhiḥ kiṃciduttaraṃ na prapadyata .
jagāma tadgṛhaṃ ramyaṃ paṭhanbrahma sanātanam .. 180.35 ..
and considering it in many ways, found no retort whatsoever;
reciting the eternal Veda, he went to his delightful house.
6.3.180.36
samprāptaṃ taṃ dvijaṃ bhaktyā pādyārghyeṇa tamarcayat .
ṣaḍrasaṃ bhojanaṃ tena dattaṃ paścādyathāvidhi .. 180.36 ..
With devotion he worshipped that arriving brahmin with water for the feet and an oblation of water;
a meal of six tastes was then offered by him according to rule.
6.3.180.37
tato bhukte mahādeve sarvadevamaye śive .
puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papātāśu gaganāttasya mūrdhani .
tasyāstikyaṃ tu saṃlakṣya tuṣṭaḥ provāca śaṅkaraḥ .. 180.37 ..
Then, when the Great God, Śiva who embodies all deities, had eaten,
a shower of flowers fell swiftly from the sky upon his head.
Perceiving his faith, Śaṃkara was pleased and said:
6.3.180.38
īśvara uvāca -
kiṃ te'dya kriyatāṃ brūhi varado'haṃ dvijottama .
adeyamapi dāsyāmi ekacittasya te dhruvam .. 180.38 ..
Īśvara said:
“Tell me, what shall be done for you today? I am a giver of boons, O best of brahmins.
I will grant even what cannot be given to you who are single-minded, surely.”
6.3.180.39
brāhmaṇa uvāca -
yadi prīto'si me deva yadi deyo varo mama .
asmiṃstīrthe mahādeva sthātavyaṃ sarvadaiva hi .. 180.39 ..
The brahmin said:
“If you are pleased with me, O god, if a boon is to be given to me,
you must always remain in this sacred ford, O Great God,
6.3.180.40
upakārāya deveśa eṣa me vara uttamaḥ .
evamuktastu devena āruroha dvijottamaḥ .. 180.40 ..
for the benefit [of the world], O Lord of gods; this is my supreme boon.”
Addressed thus by the god, the best of brahmins mounted
6.3.180.41
gandharvāpsaraḥsambādhaṃ vimānaṃ sārvakāmikam .
pūjyamāno gatastatra yatra lokā nirāmayāḥ .. 180.41 ..
an aerial chariot crowded with Gandharvas and apsarases, granting all desires,
and, being worshipped, he went to the world where beings are free from affliction.
6.3.180.42
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca -
etadāścaryamatulaṃ dṛṣṭvā devī suvismitā .
vismayotphullanayanā punaḥ papraccha śaṅkaram .. 180.42 ..
Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Seeing this matchless wonder, the goddess was greatly astonished;
with eyes wide in amazement, she asked Śaṃkara again:
6.3.180.43
pārvatyuvāca -
kathametadbhavetsatyaṃ yatredamasamañjasam .
snānaṃ kurvanti bahavo lokā hyatra maheśvara .. 180.43 ..
Pārvatī said:
“How could this be true, since here it is inconsistent?
Many people perform ritual ablutions here, O Maheśvara;
6.3.180.44
teṣāṃ tu svargagamanaṃ yathaiṣa svargatiṃ gataḥ .
kathametatsamācakṣva vismayaḥ paramo mama .. 180.44 ..
how is their departure for heaven [not seen], just as this man went to the heavenly path?
Explain this [to me]; it is my great wonder.”
6.3.180.45
etacchrutvā tu deveśaḥ prahasanpratyuvāca tām .
vedavākye purāṇārthe smṛtyarthe dvijabhāṣite .. 180.45 ..
Hearing this, the Lord of gods, smiling, answered her:
“Regarding a Vedic statement, the meaning of a Purāṇa, the meaning of a Smṛti, and the words of a brahmin,
6.3.180.46
vismayo hi na kartavyo hyanumānaṃ hi tattathā .
asaṃbhāvyaṃ hi lokānāṃ purāṇe yatpragīyate .. 180.46 ..
astonishment is not to be felt, for inference is indeed like that.
What is sung in the Purāṇas seems impossible to people;
6.3.180.47
yadi pakṣaṃ puraskṛtya lokāḥ kurvanti pārvati .
tasmānna siddhireteṣāṃ bhavatyeko na vismayaḥ .. 180.47 ..
if people act out of partisanship, O Pārvatī,
therefore their attainment of success does not occur; it is not a single wonder.
6.3.180.48
nāstikā bhinnamaryādā ye niścayabahiṣkṛtāḥ .
teṣāṃ siddhirna vidyeta āstikyādbhavate dhruvam .. 180.48 ..
Those who lack faith, who transgress moral bounds, who are devoid of conviction,
success is not found for them; it certainly arises from faith.”
6.3.180.49
śrutvākhyānamidaṃ devī vavande tīrthamuttamam .
sarvapāpaharaṃ puṇyaṃ narmadāyāṃ vyavasthitam .. 180.49 ..
Hearing this account, the goddess bowed to the supreme sacred ford,
which removes all sins, is meritorious, and is situated on the Narmadā.
6.3.180.50
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca -
daśāśvamedhaṃ rājendra sarvatīrthottamottamam .
tīrthaṃ sarvaguṇopetaṃ mahāpātakanāśanam .. 180.50 ..
Mārkaṇḍeya said:

a sacred ford endowed with all virtues, destroying great sins.

snātāstatra divaṃ yānti ye mṛtāste'punarbhavāḥ .. 180.52 ..

At Daśāśvamedhika, O king, the tenth day is always auspicious,
especially the bright [tenth day] of Āśvina, which destroys great sins.

tasyā snātvārcayeddevānupavāsaparāyaṇaḥ .
śrāddhaṃ kṛtvā vidhānena paścātsampūjayecchivam .. 180.58 ..
Having bathed on it, devoted to fasting, one should worship the gods;
having performed an ancestral rite according to rule, one should then worship Śiva.

tatrasthāṃ pūjayeddevīṃ snātukāmāṃ sarasvatīm .
namo namaste deveśi brahmadehasamudbhave .. 180.59 ..

kuru pāpakṣayaṃ devi saṃsārānmāṃ samuddhara .
gandhadhūpaiśca sampūjya hyarcayitvā punaḥpunaḥ .. 180.60 ..
Bring about the destruction of my sins, O goddess, and deliver me from worldly existence!’
Having worshipped her with perfumes and incense, worshipping again and again,

daśa pradakṣiṇā dattvā sūtreṇa pariveṣṭayet .
kapilāṃ tu tato vipre dadyādvigatamatsaraḥ .. 180.61 ..
