Chapter 49
6.3.49.1
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca -
andhakaṃ tu nihatyātha devadevo maheśvaraḥ .
umayā sahito rudraḥ kailāsamagamannagam .. 49.1 ..
Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then, having slain Andhaka, Maheśvara, the god of gods,
Rudra together with Umā, went to Mount Kailāsa.
6.3.49.2
āgatāśca tato devā brahmādyāśca savāsavāḥ .
hṛṣṭāstuṣṭāśca te sarve praṇemuḥ pārvatīpatim .. 49.2 ..
And then the gods arrived, Brahmā and others together with Indra;
delighted and pleased, they all bowed to the husband of Pārvatī.
6.3.49.3
īśvara uvāca -
upāviśantu te sarve ye kecana samāgatāḥ .
nihato dānavo hyeṣa gīrvāṇārthe pitāmaha .. 49.3 ..
Īśvara said:
Let all those sit down, whoever has arrived.
This Dānava was indeed slain for the sake of the gods, O Grandfather;
6.3.49.4
raktena tasya me śūlaṃ nirmalaṃ naiva jāyate .
śubhavratatapojapyarato brahmanmayā hataḥ .. 49.4 ..
by his blood my trident does not become clean at all.
Devoted to auspicious vows, austerity, and prayers, O Brahmā, he was slain by me.
6.3.49.5
kartumicchāmyahaṃ samyaktīrthayānaṃ caturmukha .
āgacchantu mayā sārddhaṃ ye yūyamiha saṃgatāḥ .. 49.5 ..
I desire to undertake a pilgrimage to sacred fords properly, O Four-faced One;
let all of you who have assembled here come along with me.
6.3.49.6
ityuktvā devadeveśaḥ prabhāsaṃ pratiniryayau .
prabhāsādyāni tīrthāni gaṅgāsāgaramadhyataḥ .. 49.6 ..
Having spoken thus, the Lord of the gods of gods set forth towards Prabhāsa.
Sacred fords beginning with Prabhāsa, as far as the midst of Gaṅgāsāgara—
6.3.49.7
avagāhyāpi sarvāṇi nairmalyaṃ nābhavannṛpa .
narmadāyāṃ tato gatvā devo devaiḥ samanvitaḥ .. 49.7 ..
even having bathed in all of them, O king, purity did not occur.
Then, having gone to the Narmadā, the god, accompanied by the gods,
6.3.49.8
uttaraṃ dakṣiṇaṃ kūlamavāgāhatpriyavrataḥ .
gatastu dakṣiṇe kūle parvate bhṛgusaṃjñitam .. 49.8 ..
fond of vows, bathed on both the northern and the southern bank.
And having gone to the southern bank, onto the mountain named after Bhṛgu,
6.3.49.9
tatra sthitvā mahādevo devaiḥ saha mahīpate .
bhrāntvā bhrāntvā ciraṃ śrānto nirviṇṇo niṣasāda ha .. 49.9 ..
dwelling there, O lord of earth, Mahādeva together with the gods,
having wandered long, tired and despondent, sat down.
6.3.49.10
manohāri yataḥ sthānaṃ sarveṣāṃ vai divaukasām .
tīrthaṃ viśiṣṭaṃ tanmatvā sthito devo maheśvaraḥ .. 49.10 ..
Since the place was enchanting to all the celestials,
considering that sacred ford distinguished, the god Maheśvara stayed there.
6.3.49.11
giriṃ vivyādha śūlena bhinnaṃ tena rasātalam .
nirmalaṃ cābhavacchūlaṃ na lepo dṛśyate kvacit .. 49.11 ..
He pierced the mountain with his trident, and Rasātala was split open by it;
and the trident became clean; no stain was visible anywhere.
6.3.49.12
devairāhvānitā tatra mahāpuṇyā ca bhāratī .
parvatānniḥsṛtā tatra mahāpuṇyā sarasvatī .. 49.12 ..
The most meritorious Bhāratī was summoned there by the gods;
and the most meritorious Sarasvatī flowed out from the mountain there.
6.3.49.13
dvitīyaḥ saṅgamastatra yathā veṇyāṃ sitāsitaḥ .
tatra brahmā svayaṃ devo brahmeśaṃ liṅgamuttamam .. 49.13 ..
A second confluence is there, like the dark and white [waters] at the Veṇī;
there, the god Brahmā himself [consecrated] the excellent liṅga Brahmeśa.
6.3.49.14
saṃsthāpayāmāsa puṇyaṃ sarvaduḥkhaghnamuttamam .
tasya yāmye diśo bhāge svayaṃ devo janārdanaḥ .. 49.14 ..
He established the meritorious, supreme [liṅga], destroyer of all sorrow.
In the southern quarter thereof, the god Janārdana himself
6.3.49.15
tiṣṭhate ca sadā tatra viṣṇupādāgrasaṃsthitā .
ambhaso na bhavenmārgaḥ kuṇḍamadhyasthitasya ca .. 49.15 ..
remains always there, standing before the foot of Viṣṇu.
There would be no path for the water resting in the middle of the pool;
6.3.49.16
śūlāgreṇa kṛtā rekhā tatastoyaṃ vahennṛpa .
tattoyaṃ ca gataṃ tatra yatra revā mahānadī .. 49.16 ..
a furrow was drawn with the tip of the trident, and from it the water flowed, O king;
and that water went to where the great river Revā is.
6.3.49.17
jalaliṅgaṃ mahāpuṇyaṃ cakatīrthaṃ nṛpottama .
śūlabhede ca deveśaḥ snānaṃ kuryādyathāvidhi .. 49.17 ..
The most meritorious water-liṅga, a radiant sacred ford, O best of kings—
at Śūlabheda, if the lord of gods should perform his ritual ablution according to rule,
6.3.49.18
ātmānaṃ manyate śuddhaṃ na kiṃcitkalmaṣaṃ kṛtam .
tasyaivottarakāṣṭhāyāṃ devadevo jagadguruḥ .. 49.18 ..
he considers himself pure, with no blemish remaining.
On its northern side, the god of gods, the teacher of the world,
6.3.49.19
ātmanā devadeveśaḥ śūlapāṇiḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ .
sarvatīrtheṣu tattīrthaṃ sarvadevamayaṃ param .. 49.19 ..
the trident-handed Lord of the gods of gods, established himself.
Among all sacred fords, that sacred ford is supreme, embodying all the gods,
6.3.49.20
sarvapāpaharaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaduḥkhaghnamuttamam .
tatra tīrthe pratiṣṭhāpya devadevaṃ jagadguruḥ .. 49.20 ..
destroying all sins, meritorious, the best destroyer of all sorrows.
Having installed the god of gods at that sacred ford, the teacher of the world,
6.3.49.21
rakṣāpālāṃstato muktvā śataṃ sāṣṭavināyakān .
kṣetrapālāḥ śataṃ sāṣṭaṃ tadrakṣanti prayatnataḥ .. 49.21 ..
having stationed guardian deities there, one hundred and eight Vināyakas,
one hundred and eight guardians of the field protect it with effort.
6.3.49.22
vighnāstasyopajāyante yastatra sthātumicchati .
kecitkuṭumbāttatāsu vyāgrāḥ kecitkṛṣīṣu ca .. 49.22 ..
Obstacles arise for anyone who wishes to stay there:
some are preoccupied with family and children, some in agricultural works;
6.3.49.23
kecitsabhāṃ prakurvanti keciddravyārjane ratāḥ .
parokṣavādaṃ kurvanti ke'pi hiṃsāratāḥ sadā .. 49.23 ..
some hold assemblies, some are devoted to accumulating wealth;
some speak ill behind backs, and some are always intent on harm;
6.3.49.24
paradāraratāḥ kecitkecidvṛttivihiṃsakāḥ .
anye kecidvadantyevaṃ kathaṃ tīrtheṣu gamyate .. 49.24 ..
some are attached to others' wives, some destroy livelihoods;
others say thus: 'How can one go to sacred fords?
6.3.49.25
kṣudhayā pīḍyate bhāryā putrabhṛtyādayastadā .
mohajāleṣu yojyante evaṃ devagaṇairnarāḥ .. 49.25 ..
A wife, sons, servants, and others are afflicted by hunger then.'
Thus men are entangled in webs of delusion by the hosts of the gods.
6.3.49.26
pāpācārāśca ye martyāḥ snānaṃ teṣāṃ na jāyate .
saṃrakṣanti ca tattīrthaṃ devabhṛtyagaṇāḥ sadā .. 49.26 ..
And mortals of sinful conduct—their ritual ablution does not take place;
and the attendant hosts of the gods guard that sacred ford always.
6.3.49.27
dhanyāḥ puṇyāśca ye martyāsteṣāṃ snānaṃ prajāyate .
sarasvatyā bhogavatyā devanadyā viśeṣataḥ .. 49.27 ..
Mortals who are fortunate and meritorious—their ritual ablution takes place,
especially in the celestial river Sarasvatī, the Bhogavatī.
6.3.49.28
ayaṃ tu saṅgamaḥ puṇyo yathā veṇyāṃ sitāsitaḥ .
dṛṣṭvā tīrthaṃ tu te sarve gīrvāṇā hṛṣṭacetasaḥ .. 49.28 ..
This is a meritorious confluence, like the dark and white [waters] at the Veṇī.
Having seen that sacred ford, all those gods, glad at heart,
6.3.49.29
devasya sannidhau bhūtvā varṇayāmāsuruttamam .
idaṃ tīrthaṃ tu deveśa gayātīrthena te samam .. 49.29 ..
came into the presence of the god and described it as supreme:
'This sacred ford, O Lord of gods, is equal to the sacred ford of Gayā for you.'
6.3.49.30

6.3.49.34
sarvapāpakṣayakaraṃ sarvaduḥkhaghnamuttamam .
tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snāti upavāsaparāyaṇaḥ .. 49.34 ..
destroying all sins, supreme, dispelling all sorrow. / Whoever bathes in that sacred ford, dedicated to fasting,
6.3.49.35

ye punarvidhivatsnānti mantraiḥ pañcabhireva ca .. 49.35 ..

6.3.49.38
puruṣāṇāṃ trayīṃ dhyātvā snānaṃ kuryādyathāvidhi .
