“Ah, behold this handsome [tree] endowed with rows of woods, O auspicious lady, / like Jayanta anointed to the heir-apparentship with chowries! // 90
And behold this tree, O Śarvāṇī, dancing with its sprout-hands / beside its mother, like a dear son born of her own womb. // 91
Indeed, I consider this the beloved dwelling of the goddess of the forest; / an exceeding splendor is seen here such as I have never seen!” // 92
Sanatkumāra said:
Having heard those words of Śubhāvatī, the Mountain's Daughter, / the imperishable daughter of Himavat, looked upon the young tree. // 93
And so that goddess of gods, roaming on the great mountain, / saw a young aśoka tree in full bloom, radiant like the rising sun, // 94
standing with its hundreds of coppery sprouts joined as if in folded hands. / Having seen it, O sage, the goddess Girijā experienced supreme joy, // 95
and thought in her mind: “This tree is my son. / This praiseworthy son of mine will be an increaser of delight. // 96
When the Lord arrives, then, permitted by the Self-manifest [Śiva], / I will adopt this young aśoka tree as my dear son. // 97
And for me, who am childless, this best of trees will become / a son, O best of mothers, destroying the grief of [not having] a son.” // 98
Sanatkumāra said:
Having thus decided about that tree, the beautiful Umā, / moving toward another place, looked about there. // 99
Then, in the meantime, terrible omens occurred there: / there arose a great velocity of wind that felled the mountain trees. // 100
