vyāsa uvāca1
gate divaṃ mahādeve vratamādeṣṭumuttamam .
ekākinī mahādevī kiñcakre tadanantaram . . 1 . .
sanatkumāra uvāca
gate divaṃ mahādeve devīṃ girivarātmajām .
upatasthurmahābhāgā devyo lokasya mātaraḥ . .2. .
bharatasya sutāgnestu mālinītyabhiviśrutā .
śucāvatī ca devasya parjanyasya sutāvyayā . . 3 ..

Vyāsa said: / When Mahādeva had gone to heaven to teach the supreme observance, / what did the great goddess do then, all alone? / Sanatkumāra said: / When Mahādeva had gone to heaven, the blessed goddesses, / the mothers of the world, approached the goddess, the daughter of the best of mountains: / the daughter of Agni Bharata, renowned as Mālinī, / and the imperishable Śucāvatī, daughter of the god Parjanya;
