Just like bulls gazed upon by a lion, or like mortals beheld by Time,
the watching forces were gripped by terror when beheld and pursued by Vināyaka.
Wherever that god looked, lifting his hand like an elephant its trunk,
from there the Daitya army broke, as a blossoming forest before a tempest.
Seeing that army overwhelmed by the strong one, Bali's son, the foremost among the strong,
marched forth wishing to slay Vināyaka, like a rutted king of elephants against another rutted beast in battle.
As he rushed forward, blazing like the sun, furious as the sun-scorched Death in battle,
Kuṇḍodara advanced to check him and to fight in combat, like a lion facing another lion.
Both like lion cubs full of pride, or young tuskers with their trunks swinging wildly,
those two, intoxicated with the joy of battle, clashed: Kuṇḍodara and the son of Bali.
Drawing five hundred bows that resounded like a thunderbolt,
Bāṇa, roaring like a cloud, unleashed prime arrows at Kuṇḍodara.
At those sharp-pointed arrows of Bāṇa arriving then like enraged serpents,
Kuṇḍodara struck them all with a mountain-born [tree], as obstacles destroy desires.
Seeing those arrows lying fallen on the ground, rendered futile by the foe of the gods' enemies,
that enemy of the gods struck Kuṇḍodara with a spear, as Guha struck the lord of mountains, Krauñca, with his spear.
From the chest of the lord of Gaṇas, Bāṇa's spear drank blood,
as the wife of the thunderbolt-bearer drinks sweet, fragrant nectar brought by Śakra.
