[Brahmā said:]
“… how you, [O trees,] stationary beings, shall establish in happiness
your ancestors who have reached hell and are afflicted by torments, learn that.
Whatever man, by rites and with sacred mantras,
performs in full your purificatory rites beginning with conception, and takes you as a son,
and those who, according to rule, make those previously born
and without an owner into adoptive sons—you shall deliver them as well.
You shall grant all desires and supreme happiness,
the destruction of karma for everyone, and imperishable worlds.”
Sanatkumāra said:
Then the daughter of the mountain asked again about that excellent rule.
To her asking, Mahādeva spoke this word:
“O goddess whose thighs are like an elephant-king’s trunk, walking with the gait of a lordly elephant,
hear the rule by which a tree is taken as a son.
‘Tomorrow, I shall adopt an earth-born [tree],’ O Pārvatī,
thinking thus, a woman should fast, possessing pure conduct and pure vows.
Then, when the sun of a hundred thousand rays has gone to the mountain of sunset,
and the spotless moon has risen, O moon-faced one,
in the supreme spirit of distress, O fortunate and supreme-souled lady,
she should invite at night pure brahmins who recite the Veda.
For they are mines of Vedic scriptures, like the oceans of jewels.
Brahmins, O woman whose face resembles the moon, are to be worshipped by the thousands.
Where brahmins who know mantras do not partake of the excellent offering,
there, O ruler of gods, the gods never eat the offering.
It does not spill, it does not suffer, and darkness does not overcome it;
this is the most distinguished of gifts: what is offered into the mouth of a brahmin.
