“Come, eat; become my guest, good sir,” he said with respect. / Then the wretched outcaste dog-cooker said to that treasury of austerities:
“I am an outcaste dog-cooker, O best of the twice-born; give food right here / to me, a despised person, just as [one would] to beasts and birds.
I am not worthy to receive consecrated food,” he said. / Knowing through meditation that it was Fire present there who spoke thus,
that tiger among the twice-born, skilled in speech, spoke this: / “I neither revile nor worship caste, O sinless one.
For this Self is all-pervading, stationed in all living beings; / with devotion I worship that Self, the supreme Śiva.
Believing the Supreme Lord, the Puruṣa, to be stationed everywhere, / I hold no contempt for animals, especially not for those like you.
Intent on austerity and purity, believing ‘all is indeed He,’ / I worship without agitation; be free of doubt regarding this.
When the Self is all-pervading in worms, insects, rats, snakes, / outcaste dog-cookers, gods, and twice-born, then how could we have contempt?
