pārvatyāḥ prārthanayā mahādevena svanāmnāmarthaprabodhanam (nāmanirvacanam) nāmoccāraṇamāhātmyakathanaṃ ca, śvetopākhyānam, bālyātprabhṛtyeva śvetasya vṛṣadhvajenanyā bhaktiḥ, viraktasya śvetasya rudrārādhanārthaṃ cirakāla tapaścaryā tapasi sthitasyaiva kṣīṇāyuṣaḥ prāptakālasya śvetasya nayanārthaṃ yamadūtānāmāgamanam, yamadūtadarśanāt trastasya śvetasya rudrānusmaraṇam, rudreṇa āsannamṛtyoḥ śvetasya rakṣārthaṃ tatsamīpe gaṇānāṃ preṣaṇam, svayaṃ yamasya tatrāgamaḥ, yamasya rudragaṇaiḥ saha vivādaḥ , śvetamādāya yamasya gaṇaiḥ saha rudrasamīpe gamanam, rudreṇa yamasya bhṛśaṃ bhartsanam, rudratya krodhadṛṣṭyā yamasya bhasmībhāvaḥ, śvetaṃ prati rudrasyānugrahaḥ, śvetaṃ mṛtyumukhādunmucya tasmai gāṇapatya- pradānam, sasurāṇāṃ devānāṃ prārthanayā mahādevena yamasya purarujjīvanama, śvetopākhyānopasaṃhāraḥ .

At Pārvatī's request, Mahādeva explains the meanings of his names (etymology of the names) and recounts the māhātmya of uttering the names; the story of Śveta; Śveta's singular devotion to the bull-bannered [god] from his very childhood; dispassionate Śveta's long-term practice of austerities to worship Rudra; the arrival of Yama's messengers to take Śveta, whose lifespan had run out and whose time had come while still engaged in austerity; Śveta's recollection of Rudra upon seeing Yama's messengers in terror; Rudra's dispatch of the gaṇas to his side to protect Śveta whose death was imminent; the arrival of Yama himself there; Yama's dispute with the gaṇas of Rudra; Yama's departure with the gaṇas to Rudra's presence, taking Śveta along; Rudra's severe reprimand of Yama; Yama's reduction to ashes by Rudra's furious glance; Rudra's grace toward Śveta; releasing Śveta from the jaws of death and granting him leadership of the gaṇas; Mahādeva's revival of Yama at the request of the gods along with the immortals; the conclusion of the story of Śveta.
