Once Pārvatī goes of her own accord to her mother's house. There, from her mother's mouth, she hears impossible, disagreeable, and disparaging words concerning her husband. Then, returning to her husband's presence with a mind not very pleased, she reveals her desire to go to another place to reside, having abandoned the mountain. For that purpose, Śiva summons the host-lord named Nikumbha and issues an order to depopulate Vārāṇasī, which was inhabited by Divodāsa. In accordance with that, Nikumbha goes to Vārāṇasī, builds a temple with the help of a barber, and installs his own image there. Then Nikumbha remains there in the form of Gaṇeśa the granter of boons. Making an insult to himself a pretext, he drives Divodāsa along with his queen out of that place. Thus, the God of gods, accompanied by the Moon and attended by His hosts, comes and resides in the vacated Vārāṇasī.
