tamastamataraṃ ghoraṃ narakaṃ śṛṇvataḥ param1 .
prakāśo yatra naivāsti naiva dṛṣṭiḥ pravartate ..1 . .
patanneva narastatra2 visaṃjñaḥ kriyate tadā3 .
rākṣasairvikṛtākāraistamastena sa cocyate . .2. .

Hear further of the hell Tamas, and the even more dreadful Tamisra, / where there is no light at all, nor does sight function. / Just as he is falling there, a man is rendered unconscious / by rākṣasas of deformed shapes; therefore it is called Tamas.
