[…] / Sanatkumāra said: / Overcome with rage, Maya attacked the god Candramas / with arrows shaped like venomous serpents, roaring like a raincloud. / As he shot his arrows, Candramas, as if smiling, / split each into seven parts and pierced Maya with five. / Then with an arrow he struck him on the forehead, / and the god laughed again, inflicting shame upon him. / As he laughed, [Maya], greatly exerting himself, quickly pierced his forehead / with a heron-feathered shaft, as an obstacle [strikes] one observing a vow. / Then aiming at his banner, the god severed it while making a loud cry, / and with swords he dispatched the wheel-guards to the realm of Yama. / Seeing that dexterity of his, Maya, the foremost of Dānavas, / resorted to divine sorcery and then became Rāhu. / Becoming Rāhu, the lord of Daityas rushed upon the lord of gods, the hare-marked [Moon], / as Rāhu does, with a chariot roaring like a cloud. / Understanding that sorcery, the god born from nectar, / assailed him standing in the sky with three arrows, as if on an unordained conjunction. / But that Daitya, a master of great illusion, warding off those arrows by magic itself, / rushed at the cool-rayed [Moon], a mighty Asura. / Then, seizing by the yoke his divine chariot, radiant and steered by serpents, / the Daitya hurled it and roared aloud.
