[Variant readings]
498
And other great chariot-warriors, abandoning their slain bodies there, / departed in aerial chariots crowded with women to the assembly of Brahmā. // 20
Others of sinful deeds, being struck down by those blinded by wrath, / fell into terrible hell, wailing again and again. // 21
Some making a cry of distress, [...] tormented, / men died in the battle by hundreds, then by thousands. // 22
Some biting blades of grass, and others crying, “O brother! O son!”, / people terrified in their distress yielded up their lives. // 23
With lips bitten tight, some great chariot-warriors among gods and asuras, / their vital points collapsed by arrows, fell onto the earth like trees. // 24
Jackals howled inauspiciously, and rākṣasas uttered loud laughter, / and men let out cries of pain, as did elephants and horses. // 25
And there were lion-roars of the heroes, and abundant clappings of arms, / the twang of bows being drawn, and the sounds of musical instruments. // 26
